We found out about this place while looking up for restaurants to eat in Amsterdam and my wife being a garlic lover, convinced me that we should plan on having dinner there. While walking towards the restaurant, i realized that it is located in the Reguliersdwarsstraat area (gay district) and hence the restaurant's name. Inside were around 6 - 7 tables and outdoors were about 8 tables. We decided to eat inside since it was a little chilly (about 45F) last night. For drinks I had the Aperol spritz which also had a slight hint of garlic while my wife had the mule mock tail and she ordered the 4-course menu special of the evening consisting of the garlic baker (whole roasted garlic bulb with bread & a side of garlic aioli), garlic soup (which she says was incredibly tasty), the catch of the day (baked cod) which my wife asked me to try and was the most delicious & flavorful cod dish that I ever tasted in my life and we had the garlic ice cream to share. I went a la carte and had the garlic prawns appetizer with Garlic beer & the lamb shank which was so tender that it falls off the bone, The food was awesome and the place is basically run by 2 people, the chef & the server. The service was a little slow for us since it seemed like the server knew the other patrons occupying the 3-4 tables inside and didn't pay much attention to us. I actually had to just walk up to the counter to pay for our bill after we finished desert because it seemed they were more interested with chatting with the 4 other customers who stayed for drinks after their dinner. If I could give this place more stars, I would. We walked past this place in the evening, and thought it was an unusual name. Given the area it's in with all the gay bars around, the name fits perfect in the area. Since we had recently flown in from Los Angeles, my roommate didn't want to leave the room nearby but wanted to try something local. Since we both love garlic, I figured why not Garlic Queen? We looked at the menu and decided on the Garlic Baker, Garlic Soup, Caesar Salad, Filet Mignon, and Pasta Pizzaiola. When I got there, I asked if they did to-go, which they did. The server mentioned he would not recommend the filet mignon to go, as it would be eaten later in our meal, and maybe not be as good because it would be cold. A patron inside even offered to deliver the filet mignon later to our room since he would be going by that way on his way home, which I thought was very, very nice. I told him thank you so much, but since the hotel was so close, I could just walk back. So he packaged the first three things nicely, and brought them back. The garlic baker, the garlic soup, and the Caesar salad were all superior, and above par. Even the bread rolls it came with tasted freshly baked. After we finished these three things, I returned back to get the steaks and pasta. He got them prepared in a timely matter, and they were superb! Excellent! Now I know why he wanted us to wait to eat them straight out from being cooked! Bottom line is everything was soooooo good, and beyond what I expected. The service and caring involved in my order (and how it was prepared to go) was above and beyond in any service I've received anywhere else. They've been here for 27 years, and I'll definitely be back on this trip to dine in, and even try one of their garlic desserts. My friend and I were visiting Amsterdam and ready to eat dinner. I don't remember how we found it, but we were definitely a bit skeptical at first because there was no one dining in when we arrived. But we decided to try anyway, and I'm so glad that we did. In a nutshell, everything on the menu has garlic in it. Yes, even the desserts. And every course was incredible, especially the soup! I remember I couldn't stop talking about Garlic Queen when I got back from Amsterdam. The service was very poor; I came here with friends from out of town for the first time. We were there on a Friday night and the restaurant only had a few tables when we entered. One server and one chef for the small venue, which is understandable. We ordered the baked garlic appetizer which was good but needed extra salt / pepper. By the time we finished our main we were the only table in the restaurant. Our drinks were empty mid way through our plates. We would have doubled our check with more drinks and dessert but the server didn't have interest in interacting with us. He just cleared us and stepped to the back of the restaurant with the chef. We sat there and had to awkwardly flag him to pay. He let out an audibly annoyed sigh when we asked to split it 2 ways. The food was alright, but really nothing you couldn't prepare yourself at home. This was a great find. It was one of the few places open during the holidays on Open Table. We had the garlic baker (suggest getting one per person), escargot (really good but not the best so don't feel bad if you skip it but you won't regret getting it), duck appetizer and duck leg for dinner. The duck leg for dinner was absolutely delicious. You can't go wrong with it. It's a very cute restaurant and had a great atmosphere. Let's get straight to the good stuff: Garlic soup - creamy and tasty! I was worried after reading a not-so-stellar review of it but Its actually quite good to me, not bland at all. The accompanying bread and garlic spread was a plus. Mozzarella burrata - a mound of soupy cheese with some balsamic vinegar and tomatoes in it. For $15?? No. The prices seem high for what is offered and the service needs improvement but the outdoor dining atmosphere was nice...except for the cigarette smoke from the server and other patrons. read more

Definitely lives up to its reputation! The garlic was pervasive, but not in a way that you felt the dishes just had garlic slapped in as an afterthought. Some of the dishes were extra creative, and well worth the experience. The service was amusing-our waiter was adorably hapless, but he kept the food coming and kept an eye to make sure any requests were handled quickly and efficiently. While most people wouldn't think of this as a place to bring a date, if you both love garlic (like my SO and I do) then this is definitely a great spot for a date! Just remember that afterward it's best to head somewhere private, because you will ooze garlic. read more

Love, love love Garlic Queen. Newly remodeled, and the same splendid menu with a couple of new additions, we had a terrific meal in the gorgeous, golden dining room and loved every minute. The garlic soup, a perfectly cooked, golden brown garlic baker, and the gambas (always the gambas!). We also tried the escargot, which were brilliant. John and Geert are wonderful hosts, with Geert's expert culinary wizardry and John's dry and humble humor fit the restaurant to a tee. I will always visit Garlic Queen upon every visit to Amsterdam for one of the best and quintessentially Dutch dining experiences. read more

I came here with one purpose in mind- to try the Garlic Ice Cream. It was interesting. I can't say I'm in love with it. I thought it would be like a roasted/caramelized garlic type of flavor, but it was more vanilla ice cream with a hint of raw garlic. So this may not be for everyone. Truly awful service, average food. We arrived after a large dinner and wanted to try garlic ice cream. After realizing that we only wanted to order small plates to share the waiter became very rude. He rolled his eyes at our order of a few shared starters and refused to serve us tap water when requested. The waiter was more interested in socializing with his friends than providing customer service like taking our order or following up with a check. Each time we needed something my friend had to wave him down and he would pointedly look at us and slowly walk over or ignore us and slowly clean empty tables before speaking with us. Baked garlic -- not better than what you can bake at home with store bought bread Garlic soup -- decent but could have used more garlic Garlic ice cream -- tasty. This is the first time I have not left a tip in many years. It was our last night in Amsterdam, so we reserved early at 18:30. We thought better of it, and tried to make a later reservation for 19:30, but the restaurant was fully booked - a good sign. We walked in, and there was one table with two people right at the entrance and no one else. The chef and the waiter were standing by the open kitchen. They seemed mildly surprised, but we were seated. The chef, with palms flat on the counter, stared blankly into space. The waiter was no where to be seen, and we were expecting the customary request for a drink order. We sat there alone, looking at the immoble chef, and it got really creepy. Including the chef and the waiter, there were six people in the room. We thought the other diners were just paid to sit at the door while the chef and waiter decided if they wanted to harvest our organs. After a long, awkward while, I asked the chef if he could find our waiter. He came out of his trance, and adjusted his gaze 20 degrees to the left, where, apparently, the waiter was hiding, back to the wall, just out of sight. Ordering and getting served was like pulling teeth. The food was unremarkable. We were glad to get out of there intact. read more

Came here on a Wednesday night and it was empty, which made me a little skeptic. However, I was proved wrong. I had the filet mignon and it was one of my best meals here in Amsterdam. The roasted garlic was incredible and the mushroom sauce on it was perfect. We found this small restaurant by accident, and it was not a bad choice to have dinner here. 'Garlic Queen' has a nice interior, with pictures of Dutch palaces and the Dutch queen. Service was charming: a young and a bit nervous waiter who was eager to answer questions about the menu and who was not afraid of asking the chef for recipes. You can even buy a book with some recipes that have been tried in the restaurant. As the name of the restaurant already suggests, this place is all about garlic: from starters to desserts, everything contains garlic. Some dishes are prepared with more garlic than others, but garlic it is. They even serve a garlic-lemon liquor. A nice experience - if you like garlic. read more

We had a strange and disappointing experience at Garlic Queen and had tried it based on decent reviews on Yelp and TripAdvisor. The restaurant is attractive and the idea of garlic based menus one I'm definitely on board with. However, the food was mediocre at best and the service was not good. Considering the prices being charged here, these are serious issues. I hate to be critical but we dropped almost 90 euros here for a very poor return. My BS opinion was that they have given up/lost their chef and are trying to keep the thing going on fumes. Every dish apart from some good garlic cream soup was essentially flavorless and poorly prepared - as if by someone without real experience in cuisine who was just following some recipes. My wife's appetizer of "garlic mushrooms" was just some mushroom caps sauteed in oil and garlic. Oily, essentially tasteless and topped with a few tiny crumbles of flavorless goat cheese. I had to ask her what it was based on the bite I had. Our mains were both very poor. I had lamb shank which you would think would be a no brainer particularly at a garlic restaurant. The preparation was mysterious to me. The meat on this somewhat scrawny shank was fully cooked but not really that tender. It was like it was cooked improperly without enough liquid or even perhaps reheated following a prior cooking event. There was a tiny bit of sauce along with a single well cooked clove of garlic that was again strangely flavorless. This was served with a tiny spoon of whipped potatoes (? honestly not sure) and touted to come with a "hot pepper chutney" - some reddish material in a shot glass on the plate. This turned out to be coarsely chopped red pepper - not even that hot - in some oil. Nothing whatsoever like chutney and basically tough, chewy pieces of raw pepper swimming in oil. Very strange and again hard to imagine a chef putting something barely edible like this on a plate. A final questionable note was a single, moderate sized tomato just sitting on the plate. This was either boiled or baked slightly - unseasoned, and simply collapsed into some unpleasant watery pulp and tough skin. My wife's dish was prawns. That's basically what it was - some prawns sauteed in oily, finely chopped garlic. The shrimp themselves were poor quality and not fresh and she ended up spending a lot of time trying to get the shells off. They were basically stuck to the flesh of the shrimp - a bad sign. When we got rid of these two bad plates and I had the decision for desert I asked for the cheesecake. The server/proprietor? looked at me and said "Are you sure?". This was said with a laugh but was actually a strange and off-putting remark to make. He walked away and came back with a small circular cheesecake - very simple on an uneven/thick crumb crust. It was cold as if it had been frozen (?) and was nothing special. The service in general was off hand. There seemed to be only two people - older men - running the entire operation. The restaurant was empty - two other tables being served the entire time we were there - but they still managed to avoid servicing the table properly. The one fellow seemed to be on the internet or playing Bejeweled most of the time. Clearly something not right at the Garlic Queen. I again hate to be critical but customers deserve to know what to expect and 4.5 stars for this phoned-in crap food and poor service at over 30 euros for a set dinner is really not accurate. If you don't want to make the effort to run a proper restaurant, perhaps it is time to re-think things? read more

Very charming interior, but the food is only average. Of 5 dishes between us, only one was 'very good' - the garlic soup. The rest was mediocre. My two dishes (mushrooms starter and shrimp main) were too garlicky, which drowned out the flavor of everything else. On the other hand, hubs' main course (lamb from the set menu) did not have enough garlic! Service was unusually slow, despite there being only two other tables seated. The high price is not justified, at least as of Sept. 2013. Perhaps their dishes/technique will improve in future. For now, though, go to a less touristy area for a better meal for less €€€. read more

If you like garlic this is a place to visit. A small menu, every dish is produced with care, taste and of course with garlic! Personal touches, excellent service, and sublime food. Love it absolutely will return. We had gambas, garlic soup, followed by the beef, and tuna. I managed the chocolate dessert, and we tried the locally produced orange liquor which was sensational. read more

Just stopped in for a quick appetizer...escargot was very good, as was the garlic bread...quick tip, pour the garlic and olive oil fro the escargot to pour on the the bread, makes something good greater. The sleeper hit was the garlic vodka, surprisingly good. read more
