I reserved a place here for me and my girlfriend for her birthday dinner. The restaurant had 2 different sides, one of them was really nice and the other one was OK. I was really looking forward to having a nice dinner on the beautiful side of the restaurant. But instead of getting seated on the beautiful side of the restaurant we were sat on the not so nice side away from the window. First I didn't think anything of it, but after several people came in and were seated on the more beautiful side I understood what was going on. Me and my girlfriend are both 20 years old and were 100% profiled as young people who maybe couldn't afford the menu and therefore didn't want us to be seated on the better side due to the workers believing that we wouldn't be as presentable, since the restaurant had just opened. The waitress also didn't come to check on us very often. The only positive thing I can say about the restaurant besides that they treat different people different ways, is that the food was pretty good. I would not recommend going to this restaurant! Terrible food and service. They didn't have 2 mains which was not told to us until after ordering. Then they gave us small green salads when we ordered spinach salads. When we told the waitress, she said " these are our salads." One of us got the asparagus main since they were out of sole and it was cooked to mush. We were walking along a canal and spotted this restaurant - I'm so glad we stopped! We sat outside in their great outdoor space. We had perfect weather outside, and it was a great spot to watch people walk by! The food was absolutely delicious. Everything on the menu sounded so good that it was hard to pick. We started with the tuna tartare, my friend got the vegetable risotto, and I got the fish special. Overall, everything was fresh and the flavors were incredible. I'd visit De Luwte again. The service is awesome, the food is delicious, and the location is great. We got the steak tartare, ravioli, bread with butter, and the tenderloin steak. The tenderloin steak was by far our favorite. Warm, tender, and basically melts in your mouth. My least favorite was the steak tartare, nothing special. I would suggest going to De Luwte for lunch instead of dinner. For some reason, the food didn't fill me up as much which doesn't take away from the flavor or their service just a personal opinion. read more

We had a fantastic dinner tonight. We had a table by the window which afforded a view of the street which included a glowing golden sky at sunset, a rainbow and a nice rain shower with thunder and lightening. The food was excellent. We started with the scallop appetizer and a nice wine. That was followed by a tenderloin steak which was cooked to perfection and served with potatoes & winter carrots. The after dinner coffee was strong & delicious. Dessert was rum ice dream with bananas and blackberries. Lovely atmosphere and good service. The dinner was leisurely. My wife and I had an excellent dinner at De Luwte on 23rd January for her birthday. We had just arrived from the US that morning and were a little jet lagged, my wife more so than myself, so we were glad that everyone spoke English and were friendly - not overly so, but just right. The space is really nice and modern in a great part of Amsterdam, away from the tourist areas in an immensely walkable and beautiful part of the city. This might be one of the best places in Europe. They start with a unique drink list (though they have your traditional cocktails as well) but have some really interesting specials as well. On this night, they were featuring different types of Gins with varied preparations. While not typically being a gin drinker, I opted to try one that had basil in it. It was excellent. My wife had a champagne based drink which she loved as well. For starters, my wife had Minty Pea Soup and I had the Beef Tartare. Both were delicious, with the soup only having the subtlest flavor of mint and the tartare a great flavor For our main courses, my wife had the fish of the day (can't recall the type) and I had the cod. Again, both were delicious and a great representation of European fare and every last morsel was consumed. To end the meal, they brought us the Cheesecake with Happy Birthday written in Dutch, a perfect way to end the meal. An easy Uber ride back to our hotel ended a great Birthday evening for my wife. read more

Warning to those who like "pink", the amazing kitchen does not cook meat to death but medium rare is closer to rare. Drinks were fun and the desert, chocolate of course was even more fun. We attempted to try this small restaurant, but the gentleman behind the bar who acted as host was unfriendly. We entered on a busy Saturday night, noticed some empty tables and no one waiting, and asked if we could take one. The man behind the bar looked at us like we were from Mars (we were well-dressed Martians, I would add). They were full, I believe he mumbled. I asked if we could wait. He responded with a blank look as many eyes watched us. I know he understood me, but he was somehow unable to engage. He gave us a business card and suggested we call them. Perhaps they only take reservations. It was an awkward moment in our European vacation, just slightly more so than a security pat down at the airport. Fortunately, after leaving discouraged, we discovered another restaurant which immediately became our new favorite, called, "de Zagerij." It's a warm and friendly place that I've reviewed on this site. I won't even attempt this place again. You only get one chance to make a first impression. I trust first impressions. I have good instincts. I feel we dodged a bullet. There are plenty of choices in Amsterdam. read more

I visited De Luwte on a double date on a busy Friday night in the summer. It was so hot inside the restaurant AND they had a little fireplace going. Its was miserable. We asked to be seated outside when something opened up but we were not moved. The food was fine for Dutch standards. It was limited menu of 1 or 2 fish dishes, a red meat dish and a vegetarian dish. Plates are small and I wouldn't recommend it if you have a big appetite. I would recommend this restaurant for their specialty cocktails on a nice evening if you can snag a table outside on the canal. read more

We came to celebrate New Years with a nice dinner in an relaxing environment where we didn't have to be worried about anything, except eating and drinking of course! Well, we were wrong. Upon arrival, we were told our coats couldn't be taken because the room was too full... okay, but then let us set them somewhere else that wouldn't be in our way. But we just had to put them next to us at our table. Once we sat down, we wanted to have a cocktail first before making any decisions on ordering. We didn't give any notation that we wanted to order, nor did we even look at the menu, and we had a server come up to us three times asking what we wanted to eat. The second time around we mentioned to the server that we were taking it slow and steady and weren't in any rush, so if she could just slow it down a little. We ordered and asked to have three appetizers before our main course; we were hungry! Instead of taking our extra orders happily, since it means extra turnover for the restaurant, she begins to say: "Well you know, we're closing at midnight." My boyfriend said: "It's 20:45, these additional dishes aren't going to take 3 hours..." and then the server said: "Well, okay just letting you know." She then proceeded to the computer to put the order in and she told her manager what we had ordered and we heard him say: "Well they know we close at midnight right?" That threw us off, it was quite strange how she came across and then it made us feel like we were holding them up, but as guests we shouldn't be feeling that way at all. Then the manager having the same attitude also began to show through, which was uncomfortable for us. Our first course came out, which was the scallops, the sauce was floury and mediocre but the positive note was the chorizo. Overall, we weren't pleased about it and the fact we had to wait to get sharing plates, making the food semi-cold, also wasn't an additional positive thing to add. Our second dish came out within perfect timing, not too fast or slow, and we were able to switch over our wine. But then no sharing plates again, so we just gave up and shared the bowl it came in. The second dish was a steak tartar and we were so displeased. It missed a bite - like pepper, Worcestershire sauce, something to give it a little flavor, it was a flop. Then the server kept walking by looking to see if we were finished and I finally said to her: "You can take the plate if you want." then she said back: "Well the other dish is already ready sitting in the window." I wanted to say back, that isn't my problem, but whatever we just took the third dish immediately after the second. The third dish was the mousse, which was good, but nothing extraordinary. At this point in the meal we were feeling rushed again, dish 2 and 3 came out back to back and there was no real attentive service when it came to plates or even changing the silverware. We asked for the server to come over and my boyfriend kindly said; "Look we aren't in a rush, could you please just slow down the pace a little more?" During our time to chat with one another, we kept hearing the manager and other staff discuss other tables loudly amongst each other. It was like the entire time they were more concerned with getting people out of the door, then pleasing their guests and making them comfortable. At one point, I saw the chef come out of the kitchen in the middle of service just chatting along with his colleagues with a beer in his hand. The restaurant isn't a big place - so if you're discussing something near the bar and have no constraints over you voice, then your guests will hear you loud and clear. It ruined the atmosphere to hear servers discussing these things amongst each other while I'm in the middle of a romantic dinner. Our main course makes it way out and again it was a little like okay... but nothing wow. We ordered the deer racks and I has actually excused myself to use the restroom, and came back to my plate sitting on the table. I thought to myself: Couldn't they just have waited for me to come back from the restroom? Usually each dish deserves an introduction, but we weren't getting that kind of service obviously. The pesto crust for the deer rack didn't stay on, so you could easily just scrape it off. My potatoes were cold. The overall flavor was there but there were just things missing to leave me satisfied. After we had our main course, we asked for the dessert menu and a dessert wine. As we are making our choices, we hear the manager ask the status on all of the tables and if the tables are close to being finished, meanwhile it's just around 22:00 now... they close at "midnight". We were there in September, a lovely time of year to visit Holland. We made a reservation and were seated quickly with our preference of indoors because is was threatening rain. The staff was wonderful, accommodating and knowledgeable about the menu and wine list. Our meals were delicious and served at the perfect temperature. Nice ambiance. Some friends were visiting us and we decided to book a table two weeks in advance at Luwte. We showed up at the venue on time, but no table was available for us. We were given the option to sit inside, but the temperature was unbearably warm. I tend to feel cold all the time and love warmth, but it was too hot even for me. I am not just being picky, no other guest dared to have dinner inside! We discussed the issue with the waitress and we opted to wait at the nearby bar (no table there either), waiting for a table to free up on the outside. We waited, and waited, and waited, 1 hour and 25 minutes to be exact. At the end, exhausted and hungry, we just jumped on a cab and decided to take our business somewhere else. If you accept a reservation, I think you should be prepared to offer a decent table and service on time. I can understand the day was busy, but there is no justification for having us waiting that long. They just decided to ignore our reservation and profit as much as possible given the busy summer day. This was our first meal in Amsterdam. Holy hell it was hot in here, not sure why but I guess when it's cold outside they blast the heat, my eyeballs were boiling. All jokes aside, we had a good meal here and the service was pretty good for Dutch standards. My wife ordered a red snapper dish that was their special at the time, it was good but ghastly under-seasoned and was crying for salt and pepper. My veal was awesome, but again under-seasoned. The parsnip puree was bland, needed lots of salt to make edible. The meal itself was delicious, and if my only complaint was "more salt" and blandness, it makes it a-ok in my book. It took a while to get our check because it was very busy, but overall the food was okay and the atmosphere was very nice. read more

Found this place randomly walking down the street looking for a nice, non-bar restaurant. Every aspect of this exprience was exceptional. The staff was helpful and attentive, but not stiff. The decor was tastful and relaxing. The menu had a lot of diversity for being so limited. I had a perfectly cooked lamb shank and my wife had equally perfect filet of cod, both well presented, but not over the top. Everything about this was enjoyable. I will definitely return and will recommend this to my traveling colleagues. Prices are very reasonable for what you get. Dinner for three came out to be about $!40USD with drinks. read more
