Interlaken's best Mexican restaurant! Also it's only one, but don't let that take anything away from it. I had the mole enchiladas and my girlfriend had the suizas enchiladas. Both were very good and a good portion. We didn't walk away hungry from here! And we had a pitcher of margaritas as well, which was very good. Service was great and the bartender and two other people sang most of the night. It is a small place, but was very busy. The staff was very friendly and handed out instruments while they sang. This was a great restaurant in the heart of Interlaken. There are tons of vegetarian options and a menu for kids as well. The guacamole was great. We also got the fried corn fritters to go with it, which was just delicious. We also got the vegetarian enchiladas and loved it. My son had his chicken nuggets and fries. My husband got his non vegetarian food. Overall, we loved the food and enjoyed the experience. We sat outside so we could eat and do people watching at the same time. read more

I never thought I'd try Mexican cuisine in Switzerland, but we were missing Texas and this spot was located right outside our hotel! It was pretty busy, but we were able to sit outside. It was pretty chilly and rainy, but they had a covered outdoor seating area and blankets available, which was a nice touch. If you're American, especially from any of the southwestern states, don't expect your typical Mexican fare. There were no chips and salsa when we sat down and overall, the food was less spicy than advertised or anticipated. That said, it was wasn't bad. I had chicken enchiladas that were decent, though they were a little more like taquitos. It was definitely tasty, though not as spicy as advertised, which I expected. The rice and beans were also good. The prices were steep, but not compared to everywhere else we'd stopped in Interlaken. The atmosphere was fun: we saw a birthday celebration and the staff sang happy birthday, wore sombreros, and played guitar. Presentation was nice BUT, I had enchilada plate and less than a hand full of rice was served and was not homemade but tasted like it came from a box. The beans portion same and were from a can. The enchiladas were hard and I had to use a knife to cut them. The sauce was ok. If you want "authentic" Mexican food - travel to Mexico or California. Otherwise, stay away from this place. Walked in on a busy Saturday night and lucky enough there was one seat available at the bar. Had to order a Mojito since they had my favorite rum Havana Club and let me tell you the service was impeccable. The Bartender Eddie was slammed with drink orders, kicking out Margaritas left and right and managed to throw together an amazing Mojito. I ordered the Tricolored Enchiladas with beans and rice which came out quick, piping hot and well dressed. Oh yeah and the flavors were all there. Delicious!!! The Ambience of the place was great. It was a busy Saturday night with a lively group of diners, so was quite noisy but definitely feel that's the way this place is supposed to be so if you are looking for a quiet dinner spot this may not be for you. The owner Polo came over and introduced himself and was very warm and hospitable. Polo also sings and plays the guitar with a couple of his buddies which reminds me of growing up listening to the Mariachi's at my Grandmothers restaurant. Wasn't anything spectacular. Food was not authentic nor delicious by any means. Wasn't a fan of the hostess/server guy. Made some not funny and confusing jokes. While visiting Interlaken, my friends and I came here and the host was super rude off the bat. We were a big group and understood that walking in somewhere without a reservation might be difficult but he made a big deal about accommodating us (rather than just saying no if it was that large of an inconvenience). We also asked some simple questions about the menu and were given a condescending response. Throughout the meal, our server also made jokes that made us feel uncomfortable. After looking for dinner options we saw that El Azteca was busy so we figure we had to give it a try. Unfortunately we were greeted with poor service and overpriced sub par food. It took close to an hour to get our food as we watched every other table get served who had been seated after us. The aroma In the building smelled like stinky feet so we requested a seat outside. We all ordered enchiladas which seamed to be more of a flauta as they were clearly deep fried. To add insult to injury we were charged for the large portion which was 28CHF vs 22CHF for the small portion which we all assumed we were getting. After asking why we were charged for the large portion which only consisted of the normal 3 enchilada portion he followed up with saying "well you ate it". This review is more for the atmosphere. First off, Polo, the owner, is amazing. He's beyond friendly, considerate, and fun. Me and my three friends stopped by here one night because we could not figure out what we wanted to eat. The food is good for the location, but compared to where I live, (NY), it does not really compare. It definitely has to do with the ingredients available to Polo. Make sure you ask for his homemade habanero sauce, it was utterly delicious, I wish he bottled it. But, something that was great, start a conversation with Polo, and he will make your night memorable. We sipped on some great tequila, and went back for a second night two nights later. The second night was great. We just sat at the bar, and drank, but there was a birthday going on, and Polo took out his guitar, sang for a long time. The atmosphere is what you make of it, but Polo will easily make it a night you'll never forget. Polo, you were great. read more

Who knew! You can actually get good Mexican in Europe! First let me start by saying that Mexican is the only food I truly miss while in Europe. Second, I have tried other so called Mexican restaurants in other countries and what is typically being served should not be referred to as food, let alone Mexican. But El Azteca did not disappoint! We started with the guacamole, which was made from actual avocados not out of a can or jar! The other standout was the tortilla chips, which were either homemade or imported, delish! For dinner I had the Enchiladas Tricolores which were very tasty! My husband had the Totopitos, fried tortilla quarters covered with beans, baked and topped with sour cream and jalapeños. The restaurant is on the ground floor of the adjacent Hotel Blume, which is where the restroom is located. I didn't see much, but it looks very bright and inviting. Oh, I almost forgot the best part, the margaritas! Have you ever ordered a margarita in Europe? I wouldn't suggest it, unless you're at El Azteca! Just like home! Hands down best meal we have eaten in Europe. Mexican food is comfort food for us coming from the West Coast. We really didn't expect much authenticity or spice but were blown away by the flavor and quality. My husband had pork fajitas and I had veggie enchiladas in a spicy creamy sauce. Place is a rip off. They charge $1.50 for tap water. They say the large portion has three items but then said it hard to roll three pieces with cheese and short change the food. They have only two people working the whole floor. We waited over 50 minutes for food. Others after we came for there food. They put meat in ours and then took forever to get our food. Who charges for tap water??? They say that the water bill for tap water is $1.50 per glass unless you order a drink from the list of drinks. Again a scam to up charge and deliver less food. read more

I'd call it more Mexican inspired...not the worst, but not the best...HOWEVER the REAL winner of the meal was this homemade habernero sauce that wasn't on the menu. Lots of smokers all around this place - even indoors - avoid this place if you don't want to be surrounded by cigarette smoke! The food was okay - the vegetarian options didn't have much of a flavor. We had to use the spicy sauce that came with the guacamole. The portion sizes aren't great either but given the location and the competition in the area - the portion sizes were comparable. The indoors area is not separated from outdoors and a lot of smoke creeps in to the indoors area. The owner doesn't seem to care much - I'm not sure if such an arrangement is legal or not. We ordered the nachos with guacamole to start with - the guacamole was fresh and tasted great. The salsa was average though - tasted like tomato purée. We ordered 2 veggie dishes - the burrito and the enchilada - both were divine and were polished off. Our waiter ( forgot his name) was very helpful in the selection and the service. We got the lunch special - it came with a starter, a main course and a soft drink or mineral water. I got the baked potato soup and the beef tacos. My fiancé got the tomato, avocado and onion salad with something like a pork quesadilla. The salad was outstanding -- I will be attempting to recreate this for months. The soup was good, but sadly had no potatoes -- it was just a cream soup. My beef tacos were teeny... But still decent... Just smaller than expected. My fiancés pork quesadilla was the perfect size and quite delicious. The beef tacos came with rice and refried beans. The pork quesadilla came with two sides of refried beans, lettuce, onions and tomatoes. The whole thing came with delicious homemade chilli sauce. It is too spicy some, but perfect for me. The service at this restaurant was beyond exceptional. That's why I am giving it 4 stars instead of 3. We got the nachos with pork on it - the amount of pork was less but the cheese, beans, etc. more than made up for it- hence the 5 stars above. We did not expect to find Mexican food in Switzerland and we are always suspect outside of Mexico or Southwest US. But, we decided to give it a try and we had a fantastic evening. The inside was booked, so we took a table outside with an overhang heater. There were 5 of us and the table stayed warm enough that we were comfortable all evening. First, as with most things in Switzerland, it was expensive. Not sure how it has only a $$ rating, it should be at least $$$. But, when we opened the menu, wow! Chilaquiles! Enchiladas! Adobo sauce! Heaven. The dishes did not disappoint in flavor or presentation. One criticism is portion. We shared 4 main dishes and had just enough, but we had ordered 2 "larger" portions where there was a smaller option and not sure how they could have been any smaller. The corn tortillas and green sauce were sublime. At 9.50 per serving, the flan was tasty, but not good value for the serving size. Admittedly dubious about Mexican food in Switzerland, but El Azteca was not only a refreshing surprise but the food and staff were awesome! We lived in Colorado for years and certainly know the difference between Tex-Mex and authentic Mexican food - this is the real deal from drinks (Margaritas rimmed with Tajin to Conchinita Pibil enchilads to Pineapple Bunuelos! We will definitely be regulars.Like ALL restaurants in Switzerland it is pricey but not out of the market and the quality of the food makes the experience a value for the money. After growing weary of potatoes and cheese, my traveling companion and I were excited to find Mexican food, with a surprisingly high rating. We headed over, not expecting much in central Switzerland. The food was fantastic! First we had margaritas, and I'm almost certain the bartender threw in an extra shot. We had guacamole for an appetizer - it was good, but nothing phenomenal. For the main course I had pollo con mole, which was rich and thick and delicious - though I prefer mine with a little more spice. My friend had the carne pibil, which was amazing -- highly recommend! The atmosphere was also great - our waiter was one of the friendliest people we've met in all of Switzerland. After suffering through many days of Swiss and Italian food, we decided to try some mexican food for dinner. Luckily, we came into El Azteca. They make a very good margarita with spicy salt on the rim. We opened with some guacamole which had a nice amount of spice and tasted very fresh. I had the pork fajitas which came with onions and peppers in a yummy sauce with a small portion of rice and beans on the side. My wife had chicken enchiladas suiza which she loved. This is the first time in days that have felt we received a decent amout of food for the price. As far as prices go in Switzerland, almost every meal starts at 28CHF which is double (at a minimum) the price you would pay in the US. At least here we walked away feeling satisfied. read more
