I'm WAY overdue for this review, but better late than never, eh? This is the BEST Mexican food I've eaten in Zürich, hands down. I'm originally from Southern California and have lived in Switzerland for 5 years now... so I know what I'm talking about. ;) The owner is from San Diego, so perhaps we jibe on what we consider good Mexican eats due to the whole SoCal thing. :) Ok ok, so some people could argue about the authenticity since there's no goat or menudo or octopus here... but we ARE in Switzerland, folks. This is a business that does need to cater to the local market, so you'll see stuff that locals go crazy for--like papitas (french fries)--on the menu. I'm not really a fry person and would never order them in a Mexican restaurant, so although the Swiss seem to love their pommes frites, I would rather get the fully loaded nachos instead. Considering how expensive things are in Switzerland, prices here are quite affordable and the portions are very generous. The trade-off is that this place is a little ways out of the city center, but it's easily accessible by public transit and totally worth the trip out! About 10 minutes by train or 20 minutes by tram or bus from Zürich HB. The restaurant is also set a little ways back from the street, but just look for the giant Migros right across the street, and you'll find this place immediately. EVERYTHING I've eaten (which is pretty much everything on the menu) is super delicious. When you order, take a look at the wall to the left to see if there are any monthly specials. One time, I had a really yummy cheese enchilada mole that's not on the regular menu. This is also the only place I've seen in Zürich that sells Pacífico beer. :) When my bf left Switzerland, he held his goodbye party here, and it was no problem to contact them online to reserve the back room for a Friday night. The staff is really friendly and speaks perfect English, they accept credit cards as payment here, and the food and ambiance is awesome. Two thumbs up! :)

WARNING. This review is not for the faint of heart. La Taqueria seems to be the only "authentic" Mexican restaurant in Zurich and, in terms of food quality and ambience it certainly lived up to expectations. And, it's fairly easy to get to from the Hauptbahnhof. But, in terms of value, customer service, and even atmosphere, it falls woefully short. At $21.00 USD for a burrito, you expect one helluva ride, not to mention impressive side dishes, and an attentive wait staff. Unfortunately, the only sides were pickled cabbage (Mexican dish?) and four, yes four, tortilla chips. The food is counter ordered and then delivered to your table, but that's it. And, in a European country in 2018, why no air conditioning? We tried sitting outside and were overwhelmed by the cigarette smokers, forcing us back inside to the stale, hot air. It really is unfortunate that the experience of enjoying good tasting good food can be thoroughly wrecked by factors like price, etc. if you've been out of the US too long and can't do without your Mexican food fix, the try La Taqueria. Otherwise, save your money and wait until you get home.

Fantastic food, cocktails, and fast and friendly service. A real hidden in Altstetten. Will visit again soon! Full review and pictures here: https://medium.com/@waynejnicklin/la-taqueria-zurich-4073dddeb458

Now open! Best margaritas in Switzerland!

La Taqueria totally satisfied me-a! I came with two friends for dinner on Friday night, and was surprised by the food- it's tasty, alright! Tried the Tomatoey soup and a quesadilla to start, but our entrees were probably the best darn part! My veggie burrito was jam-packed with good stuff, then the tacos and taquitos- we couldn't get enough! My margarita was tasty (and oh so strong too), I couldn't stop with one, and had to order two! They also have a selection of diverse drinks and beers, so pick one (if you can), and raise your glass for a cheers! My friend went so crazy for the quesadilla and melted cheese, we had to order another just to put him at ease. It's super closeby to Altstetten bahnhof, and almost right next to a tram 2 stop. For a good deal, great food, and a nice ambience, friend- come on down to Taqueria, it's MUY BIEN!

    Fish Tacos - AMAZING!

Best Mexican restaurant in mainland Europe. Period. Run, don't walk there. Everything I had was brilliant and I felt like I was back in SoCal. Here is what I had - and every dish was a 5 star dish, so no need to rate them individually as I usually do: - Carnitas tacos - excellent. Juicy and flavorful. - Fish tacos - possibly the best I ever had! - Al Pastor tacos - just as good as the carnitas tacos. - Carne Asada burrito - I liked it a lot, especially since it is comprised almost entirely of steak - no rice filler that I hate so much. - Black beans were also very authentic and tasty. Can't wait to go back there!

Been here twice now. Is the best Mexican food in Zurich. Our favorite thing to do is munch on the delicious fried tortilla chips. But there are so many great options on the menu. The staff is always friendly. Great outdoor seating, and lively atmosphere.

There are a lot of Mexican Restaurants in Zürich, but La Taqueria is the only one that truly made me enjoy Mexican Food! Overall great atmosphere, friendliest team in a Restaurant and it near my Home, so a perfect stop for a take away dinner!

Very cool entrance near the flowery garden
    Francisco D.

I always come here with a reservation and this place is always full. Today I guess the heat is keeping the customers away ;) Anyways, I have tried all kinds of dishes 'Al Pastor' and I never get disappointed. Very well done and the portion size is perfect!

    Pollo Burrito

............................ GUYZ. Seriously. It's been a looooong 14 months that I've been stuck living in Zurich without authentic Mexican food... Let me tell ya! ;) coming from a Hispanic background it's been a hard adjustment. But thank the Mexican gods that La Taqueria is here! Muy bueno!! Although it is located in Altstetten, it's pretty darn convenient to get to. From Zrh HB it's less than 5 minutes by train and from there about a 10 minute easy walk. Can I get a whoop whoop that there is finally a place in Zurich where you order & pay at the counter and they deliver your food..?! It cuts out all that awkwardly slow non friendly Swiss table service that I loathe. Seriously y'all, it's the small things that excite me. Oh yeah, the food... It was great. I've been twice already (mhm) and I feel confident in recommending the chicken! I had a pollo taco which was great, juicy and had great flavor. I do wish that it was double tortillad (si, a verb) though. The friend I was with didn't think what I got was a taco because she was only familiar with a crunchy taco LOLZ! She had the chicken burrito and loved it. We ordered chips and salsa and guac and all three were great! The chips are thick and guac was creamy. I'm excited to go back and try their frijoles negros and mexican rice, to add both to your main costs about 10 bucks which sucks a little but I'm not complaining ;) Obvi will go again. And again. :)

    Horchata

Finally a Mexican place in Zurich that actually takes me back to all those fantastic Mexican dining experiences in the States! While its location is a bit off the beaten path, La Taqueria makes up for it with its interior design and atmosphere. Good selection on the menu, ranging from all sorts of Tacos and Burritos, to Taquitos, Nachos and Papitas (French Fries covered with Carne Asada, cheese, guacamole, etc - yes please). Only thing missing in my view are Tamales. There is even Horchata available, need I say more? I thoroughly enjoyed my Carnitas Burrito, good size and great flavor, also good deal at CHF 13.90.. Same goes for the Super Papitas that I shared with my company. Cannot wait to be back, I recommend this place to anybody looking for flavorful Mexican food or a cool place to dine.

I've been a local in Zurich for several years, and love eating around town…read more I came here with my friend for dinner, and we were really out of place, there was only two other couples that came in later. This is more of a business lunch place that the decor is modern fushion-Mexican-Swiss inspired (combination of colorful displays with very structured furniture). It is located in Zurich's technopark area which has recently been restored to house some tech companies here, but to those who like or dislike the industrial feel part of the city - they may or may not like it here. Our food was okay, decent quality, but it was safe. I like how they started out with complimentary chips served in a molcajete, a stone bowl on four legs. Overall for our meal, I appreciate the price, value and taste ratio for what you can find in Zurich, but we would certainly not come back for dinner. There are other places in town closer to use that has a better vibe, burst of taste in the food and vibrant feel that you would expect in a Mexican restaurant. If I was meeting someone in this neighborhood for a business lunch, I wouldn't mind coming back here. The service here was excellent. The kitchen staff was swift. No complaints here on anything relating to people. - 1 star off for the atmosphere, lacking Mexican ambiance/warmth, a bit sterile - 1 star off for the safe flavor (all subjective, could be more contoured more to Mexican-Swiss)

I've lived in New Mexico, San Diego, and the South and East Bay of San Francisco, so please believe…read moreme when I say Tlako seems to have decent contemporary almost-fusion, as long as you don't really think of it as authentic "everyday" Mexican food. Some of what makes this place nice: 1) The chips are an amazingly, beautifully perfected thing. And their chip salsa is legit, unique. Not _quite_ normal mexican chips and salsa, but honestly my favorite part of both meals I've had there (and it was the free part)! 2) Lime 'water' (agua fresca) is tasty, though I tend to appreciate sour more than sweet, and would be just as happy with twice the lime and 1/2 to 1/3 of the sugar. 3) Speaking of which, they are super-generous with fresh limes! 4) The tender swiss-ish ribs in chili guava sauce literally fell off the bone upon receipt. 5) The cappuccino was also solid. (Which it should be, for the price.) 6) They seem family-friendly. 7) The waitstaff is all very polite, exceedingly nice really, and they are very polite about speaking English; when I mentioned in a friendly way that their english handouts had slightly amusing grammatical errors the manager appreciated my suggestions; it turned out the updated form of the pdf on his phone had corrections for their next run. (I will note that all the managers and cooks seemed to be male, and most of the waitstaff female. A little more balanced diversity would be nice.) They also genuinely solicited feedback and tried to connect with customers, so I hope the below comments are taken as they are intended: constructively, not meanly! 8) Can't resist saying: the passionfruit mousse was delicious! Raspberry was a great touch (more please!) 9) Allergens and veggie/other are indicated on menu. Reasons it's not 'everyday mexican' / could improve for how it's billed: 1) Authentic tortillas are usually corn or white flour, usually (or maaybe yucca/cassava); the tacos came on some sort of unusual darker color or multigrain texture, which is not necessarily bad but also not traditional. They were also lukewarm and floppy, no lightly flakey edge typical of a traditional place that knows its tortillas (whether over open fire or in a pan). 2) The carnitas that came in the tacos were ok, but more super-soft and mushy than the perfect authentic carnitas, which are both slow-cooked, and have a golden crispiness to its finish. Savory crisp edge is key: this is best accomplished with a sear before the slow cook and a high fry at the end. Also, they were not busy: lukewarm's really suboptimal. 3) Great salsa fresca, and guacamole is extremely fresh, but these were not: the tomatoes and onions in the fresca were ok but a little wilted, and it's so easy for old onions to taint tomato freshness; the guac was tolerable, but had that slightly-overripe or less than fresh taste, helped by a little lemon, lime, or citric acid; both guac and salsa could've used more garlic. (I may be picky here: I won 3rd place in a city guac contest once, and it came in higher among the traditional guacs. Still, I stand by my statements.) 4) Pomegranate seeds and the dressing on the side salad are not normal mexican, but also seemed tasty-healthy for what it was. A little on the minimalist side. 5) In the US you can get tacos for 1/3 of the price of these things at least. I realize fresh meat is expensive in this town but oh, the pain. 6) The rib sauce was far more chili than guava -- overwhelmed whatever guava flavor may've cost money to add. (The ribs still fell off the bone, though.) 7) The 'red' tomato rice was a little boring. Also, what about just having typical spanish style rice options, or solid refried beans? That said, this place is still totally worth checking out if you're nearby and curious: hope this feedback is helpful.

My husband and I came here after a friend recommended the place. They have a huge array of different burritos and burrito bowls, all of them customizable. I had the chicken salad, which is essentially a burrito salad but a little lighter and my husband had a gaucho burrito, with beef and bacon. Both dishes were incredibly delicious. The salad featured a peanut dressing and fresh guacamole and the burrito a generous helping of meat and barbeque sauce. Soooo good! I like that they offer healthier alternatives in addition to the staple burritos and the restaurant is so nice and open. In addition, the staff is very patient, helpful and upbeat. It was a thoroughly good experience. Another reviewer wrote that they were a little like subway. I don't like this comparison because Zapote's ingredients are actually really fresh, their staff is upbeat and knowledgeable and their food is actually tasty. A small problem for me is the location, which is really not easy to get to and their opening times. They only open from 11 to 15 o'clock and are closed on the weekends.
