Fabulous. Best meal of my entire trip in Switzerland. Price is on the higher end but the food quantity is ginormous. Plus the food quality is high, the service very friendly, and the ambiance warm and welcoming. So all in all, I would say this establishment offers good value despite the higher price point. For main course, I ordered shrimps, my wife the lamb. Both dishes were very tasty. We were told there would be a second serving, and sure enough, after we finished our main dishes, they magically replenished. I don't think the owner will allow you to leave less than stuffed! Charming, cozy dinner place with multiple Swiss dishes to choose. They has a beautiful wood interior with a warm fireplace. They conducted a dinner service at the table where they brought your meal out in pieces and put your plate together in front of you. Owner was justly proud of the delicious food his kitchen served. We were the first ones in the restaurant because​ as Americans​ we eat early dinners haha. The service was outstanding​ and the chef was there to greet us and talk to us as he served us our meals. The shrimp cocktail was amazing and one thing I love about the Swiss is that they always ask you if you had enough if not they offer​ you more for​ the same price you paid. We've dined at Max Julen at least five times now. One thing is certain - GRILLED MEATS DO NOT GET ANY BETTER. Try everything on the menu, especially the deer. Ordered lamb and steak and it was delicious. Chez Max tended to cooking the meat in the wood burning/brick oven near our table. Wait staff was very attentive to making our experience memorable. Personally serving the meal from a side table they had set up. Chex Max oversees the whole operation as it unfolds. Ensuring everyone is pleased with their meal. Only thing I noticed was Chez Max and the staff did not seem relaxed and a bit of tension in the atmosphere. New staff they were training? Whatever, I could tell there was something. This is quite the dining experience. I love it because the food and service are very high-class, while the atmosphere and feel of the place is very friendly and casual. You can dress up for dinner, you can also come in your cozy sweater, moon boots and pants. This is THE PLACE for meat in Zermatt. I got the Venison, it was the best Venison I ever had. They cook the meat (or at least finish it) over a fire in the main dining area. Request a seat close to the fire so you can watch and interact with the manager that cooks the meat there, he is very friendly and sweet - you could buy him a schnapps or cognac to have with him, he will return the favor! The prices look high (well, aren't all the prices high in Zermatt?) but you get an extremely generous portion of delicious food - two plates to be exact. They portion the food out at your table for you, its very fresh. After you finish your first plate, they will clean it away and then give you a second plate that is at least 2/3 the size of the first one. Order the Weinsuppe - it is a red wine soup and it is delicious. Order any meat dish. If you aren't into meat, order the shrimp - someone at our table got it and it was amazing! The servers are very nice and excellent at their job. The Grand Marnier chocolate fondant dessert is quite a show and delicious! read more

What a great place with great food. We showed up with a group of 12 just as dinner was winding down with no problem. The owner(?) offered to do a fixed price menu with a section of appetizers, sides and meats that was perfect. Even recommended a tasty magnum of wine, that was a good deal. Fabulous meal; great setting! Menu is heavy on meat, which is cooked in a small fireplace which was within view of our table. The filet (for my wife) and the deer steak were fantastic. They made one serving with veggies; then a second serving each with a different selection of vegetables. We had strudel for dessert which was also wonderful. Outstanding! We had six Americans, 1 vegetarian and 1 with a bunch of allergies and every dish was spectacular and the chef came to our table at least 5 times throughout the night. If I had to choose the filet was the best. The way they cook the meats in the wood burning oven and plate your dishes in front of you is outstanding. At peak dinner time service can got a bit slow because it seemed like all the staff would help plate one table when your meats where ready.
