This place is one of the more hole in the wall places I've eaten at. There is very little ambiance and decor, but y'know what the food is good so don't judge a book by its cover! I got the Flor de Loroco (Squash Blossom) pupusas and they were great! My friend got the chicken tacos and those were good too (very basic with lettuce and tomato). I also ordered guanabana juice and it came out so sweet and kind of powdery that I couldn't really drink it. Service was not great, there was some confusion because they don't speak English super well and we had to ask for things like forks and water a few times. Will probably be back to try some other things but will have to gage which of my coworkers are up for this type of atmosphere (or lack thereof).

Hole in the wall. Very good food. Nice service. Got the Al pastor tacos, the carnitas burrito and the fish tacos, as well as the rice and beans side and the chips and guac. Everything was good!

I love this place! The sign outside says "Restaurant Catracho" but I think the technical name is "Restaurant Tacos Locos Honduras and Mexican", which is a mouthful. They have Honduran food as well as Mexican. My first time here I got baleadas and pupusas and I loved them. There was a bit of a language barrier and they were in the middle of setting up for a private party but if all worked out ok. I stopped going for a while (I kind of just forgot about it). But recently I've had some Sunday burrito cravings and a lot of the places nearby are closed on Sundays. I love their burritos! Everything is very reasonably priced. Some of the cheapest food in the area, but that doesn't mean it's not good. I've tried many things from the menu and nothing has disappointed me. A standout is the pollo con tajadas (chicken with slices). It's fried chicken on top of a slaw with fried bananas, salsa, pickled onions and sauces. It's ridiculously good. Be careful when ordering from the menu and going off the English translation. Some of it is a little off. For instance, if it says "meat" it usually means beef. And if it says "steak" it means "fish filet". I've received meals that were different than what unexpected, but I've never been disappointed. The only things I think could be improved is their hot sauce is not very hot. Also the rice is just ok. I'm willing to look past this since the food is delicious, cheap, good portions and quick! Definitely give this place a try! Don't go to Juno or Chinesca unless you want to pay a lot of money for inferior food, but good ambiance. This place is definitely lacking ambiance, but I really don't care. By the way, you can order online from their website http://orderrestaranttacoslocoshondurasandmexicanfood.com/ (longest URL of all time)

Hole-in-the-wall Honduran eatery on the edge of Center City

Restaurant Catracho is a hole-in-the-wall eatery right on the edge of Center City Philly. While it serves some Mexican dishes this is def an Honduran restaurant - hence the name. I was surprised to find out many of my friends didn't realize that Catracho is a name for someone from Honduras. It is not perjorative at all - no "bad hombres" connotation as one American leader once sadly called them. Well when you think of Honduran food of course first comes to mind are 'Baleadas.' These thick flour tortillas folded over eggs, cheese, and meats like chicken or chorizo are indeed a tasty treat. I odered two roasted chicken & chorizo baleadas here and enjoyed these filling concoctions very much. You can eat-in here (minimal atmosphere) but most of their business is takeout. Cool that now tasty baleadas are to be found within easy reach of Center City!

The place leaves much to the eyes, it's not the brightest or shiniest, but they know what they are doing in the kitchen. The flavors are simple comforting and still complex. You'll find native Hondurans eating and enjoying each other's company. It's a charming and heart warming experience. Try to know some Spanish when going in, although I'm sure they could accommodate. I ordered takeout Pupusas with squash flowers and they we're the best I ever had! 10/10 would recommend. The service was fast and food was good. A great stop if you're headed to union transfer.

Booths and bar seating is available as well as a patio on weekends. It is located in a sketchy area but a police car is stationed on the corner. I felt as safe as I do in other areas of Philly. Street parking is available within a few feet. The cocktails were very good with many different kinds of margs and other drinks. Beer and wine are also available. We were greeted as soon s we walked in by both the bartender and one of the owners. Our server brought water as soon as we sat down. She was attentive and helpful with explanations. The food here is authentic! Several different kinds of guacamole are available. We chose the one with pomegranate. It added a nice crunch and flavor. One with grasshopper was available. lol that was a no for me! The trio of empanadas were delicious. We shared a carnitas taco platter and branzino platter. The tacos were tasty. The branzino was cooked nicely with good flavor. The rice and beans and Brussels spouts and mushrooms were all delicious. I'll definitely be back!

The meat in the tacos was so dry that it was hard to chew and swallow. Some of the pieces were cooked to a crisp. No amount of salsa could make them better. I'm sorry I didn't take photos of the tacos, but trust me me I get no pleasure from leaving a bad review for this place; I am not lying or exaggerating. I thought they were going to be one of our local gems. I choked down a half a taco, gave the rest to my husband and he couldn't eat them either. The churros actually had raw batter in the middle and the outside was rubbery and hard at the same time. You could barely bite through it. I'm a cook and I know that that is about keeping the oil at an even temperature to get the inside done and not overcook the outside. Someone in the kitchen did not know what they were doing. The thing is, I have had their food before and it was pretty good. I don't know if there is a new chef or what happened, but I can't trust them after this experience.

Honestly El Rey is great!…read more As a Los Angeles native, Mexican food is always a "not as good as California" affair, and with that bar, it's hard to find anything that holds a candle. But El Rey is good in its own right, taking familiar foods and flavors, with a bit of a fancier twist, and making a good meal that I love to eat and enjoy! Seating and service here is friendly and prompt. Even when it's pretty loud and seems packed, there are always a handful of open tables available, where we've usually been able to be seated almost immediately. Such was the case this evening. We were on a bit of a time crunch so we ordered immediately and our food came out so fast that the waiter for our table was surprised as the food beat him with our napkins to the table. We ordered the Tuna Tostada and the Yucatan Spiced Chicken Fajitas. Both were amazing! Good thing for our tight timeline, the food was gone as fast as it came. The waiter helpfully recommend the house hot sauce, which was certainly spicy and a good compliment on our fajitas. Overall, a great place to dine for Mexican-inspired! Laying aside my California bias, El Rey is a fun time every time we come.

I hadn't been to El Rey in years, but we scored last-minute Valentine's reservations and WOW. The vibe was lively, warm, and perfect for a fun night out. - Let's talk about these STEAK TACOS . Perfectly seasoned, tender, flavorful -- the kind of bite that makes you close your eyes for a second. They were so good I came back two days later just for them. That's not a craving... that's infatuation. - The Chayote Salad completely surprised me. Fresh, bright, and paired with their homemade hot sauce? My palate was awakened. I even brought it home (with dressing and hot sauce on the side) and it still hit! Speaking of heat -- if you love spicy food, ASK for their homemade hot sauce. It's bold, fiery, and addictive. I genuinely want a bottle for home. Service? 10/10. From the manager to the hosts to the bartender -- everyone was kind, attentive, and patient. They even remembered me from Valentine's Day, which says everything about how they treat their guests. Bathroom Check: Clean? Yes. Cute ambiance? Yes. Great mirror for photos? Absolutely. And again -- CLEAN. El Rey, I'll be back soon

There were booths, tables and bar seating available with Wonder Years playing on a few TVs with warm lighting and the incandescent Christmas lights that are reminiscent of Grandma's house (bonus points for nostalgia!) I requested a booth and she promptly sat me. She brought me water, menus and explained the specials to me. As I perused the menu, I was overwhelmed with the options available to me. I ultimately landed on one of the dinner specials (Cabernet braised brisket with a side of carrots & buttery mashed potatoes), chips & salsa and a Paloma. Chips landed first and while both salsas were fresh, I still felt the need to add salt. (Everyone's palate is different) Food & drink arrived simultaneously. Paloma was made strong but tasted more like a classic margarita as opposed to the tang of grapefruit that comes with a Paloma. Still good! The food was essentially cold & looked like it had been sitting for awhile being served to me but all the flavors were there. The brisket fell apart, I didn't even need a knife to cut it. The carrots were tender and the mashed potatoes were buttery. I would 1000% go back for the drinks and service, however I may get something different on the menu.
