With suitcases it took us about 40 minutes to trundle up to the cafe, but luggage free or on the bike it's a much shorter journey. The cafe is tucked away on Nieuwerdammerdijk, just up from the church, in the midst of some lovely houses which, unlike the central part of the city, are all quite low in height (single or two floors max) It's been there over 100 years, and you certainly tell why. The service and the food were lovely (that apple cake!) and on a nice day you can sit outside in the sunshine down by the waterside. I'd imagine it's a good place to hunker down in less clement weather too, although it doesn't take too many to fill it. One of the highlights of my last trip to Amsterdam.

We ate here our first night in Amsterdam for dinner, as we were tired and unfamiliar with our surroundings. The 6 euro mixed salad came with cucumbers, raw onion rings, croutons and mixed greens in a vinaigrette sauce. Loved the raw onion rings, which went well with the mixed greens in a large bowl. The 26 euro sea bass came in a tomato risotto with lentils. Portion size on the small side, but wife ate the entire fillet without any problems. Pricey for what you get. The 21 euro hamburger came with the usual lettuce, tomato, but no pickle. Thick rings of raw onions over a half pound medium cooked by default beef patty, along with bacon and cheddar. This burger was so large it was definitely a knife and fork job, as too big for any mouth. I declined the fries, which cost 6 euros, and enjoyed the burger, covered with a zesty bbq sauce.
