Brown cafe #3 (and last) of the night was Het Elfde Gebod, and I really, really enjoyed it. This place is filled with character and atmosphere, and the beer selection was maybe the best of any bar we went to on our trip. This place is a lot bigger than the prior two cafes we went to before this, though still felt cozy and intimate. The decor was great, and I loved the carpet (tiny rugs) on the tables. To drink, I ordered a Hazy Jane IPA, which was both tasty and refreshing. We ordered at the bar and grabbed a table at the back of the cafe, which was spacious and relaxing. Service was great during our time here, and prices were in line with everywhere else we had been to. If looking for a cool brown cafe to grab a drink at, Het Elfde Gebod is a great option. This is where you need to go when you're in Amsterdam. Why? Because it's a JEWEL. Most places that you stop off at in the 'Dam will be pouring pitchers of Heineken, and maybe one or two others. But this place has such an amazing selection of beers, you'll want to try at least one of everything (which I don't recommend, because then you'd be dead). But suffice to say, you'll never have to have the same beer twice. We stopped by here early in the evening for a few drinks, and ended up staying until they closed. A fellow traveller kept us company as we dived face first into beer after beer, and before you could say 'silly drunk tourists' we were stumbling out and looking for food. I love Belgian beers, but they're not as common in Amsterdam as one might have hoped for. Stopping by this wonderful bar was exactly what I was craving. This was also the night before King's Day, so it was a bit wild in the city. We were looking for something a little more downtempo, and so this place was perfect. The proprietor was really friendly, as well. I can't speak on the prices, because honestly by the time the bill came round I was more than a bit wasted. And you know what? Some experiences are worth paying a bit for. This is one of them. read more

Absolutely loved this small place just a 5 minute walk of central station, red light district, and most of the central touristy things. Had 3 drinks, all the bartender's recommendations and all good! A couple of things to keep in mind... 1) They don't have much of a food menu (3-4 snack choices, we got cheese and mustard) 2) It's mostly Belgian beers, but I won't complain abut that! 3) Cash is preferred, if not required. We didn't have any Euros on us at the time and they didn't take our Citi MC, so he just asked that we come back later that night or the next day to pay. We came back about an hour and a half later after our canal cruise and had another drink and paid. Don't take advantage of that though, as I wouldn't want them to mistrust us tourists! read more

Good bottled beer selection, warm and friendly atmosphere, but tiny and smokey. The beer selection is listed on a chalk board opposite the bar. Drafts on the left, bottles on the right. It's all in Dutch, so either know what you want before going in or randomly point like I did. I tried asking the bar tender for a recommendation but it was noisy and she misheard me. I had a Kasteel Dubbel which was a creamy and dark ale (11%). It was a little strong at first but after the first few sips I enjoyed it. read more

This is a cozy little bar with a good selection of beers on tap and in bottles along with hard liquor for those who like a little something along with your beer. Be careful when you enter because regulars seem to like to hang out in the entry blocking the way in. If you get confused you'll end up behind the bar. So when you enter take an immediate left to enter into the customer area. The front area is where the bar is where the drinks are located. The rear has tables and chairs for your lounging pleasure. Most horrible bar that I've been to. The bartender was disrespectful, unaccommodating, my jacket got stolen and the girls toilet was flooded ! I had to stand for 30 minutes outside to write a report how my jacket got stolen and then I had to give it away. Not a place I would recommend to my friends or a tourist. read more

Leffe on tap!! And different kinds of Leffe, score!! The place is a little warm, not a lot of ventilation that being said the smokers stand out front and the smoke comes right in. Just thought id mention for those who take smoke free environments for granted. Won't stop me from visiting. It's a great place, small intimate. Good for dates, or with a group. read more

So happy to have found this...and only 5 minutes walk from my hotel! I've thoroughly enjoyed discovering a wide range of Dutch beers on this trip (Arendsnest is another 5-star find), but I love Belgian beers and those have been more difficult to find in Amsterdam than I would have expected. It's a Thursday night, about 10pm, and there are 8 customers including me in this small, cozy, brown wood pub (25 people would be 'full'), the range of tap beers suits me down to the ground, a BB King album is playing as a few happy, friendly conversations take place and a couple of us are reading. Beer beer and more Belgium beer. I had to get my pallet and stomach prepared before I headed to Belgium the next day so my friend took me to this pub here in Amsterdam and so glad he did. This place is very dark and cozy and the bartender was really kind since I had absolutely no idea what I was ordering. He allowed me to taste the beers on tap and from there I just had to pick randomly. I did have a couple Dutch beers though because when in the Netherlands. They also have a chalkboard of bottled beer, mostly Belgium. The only food they serve here is cheese and sausage so if you want some other beer nibbles you won't find it. This is definitely a locals spot so you don't really run into obnoxious young tourist here, aside from me, minus the obnoxious :) read more

This review is a little late - last time I was at this pub was back in 2015. If you want to go to a bar in Amsterdam that has just about every selection of beer you can imagine this is the place. The atmosphere is like a Chicago blues bar but without the band (a key part missing but you get my point). The bartender is very knowledgeable about the beer and they have literally every beer in stock. I have been to scotch whiskey bars that advertise hundreds of scotches but when you get there only 25% of the scotch is in stock. Not the case here if you see it on a list you can order it.
