We got a table at six, and as the other diners sat down, quickly understood that the popularity of this place was based in a solid reputation. I started with a stange lager, followed by the tomatencreuemuss (tomato bisque). So far so good. The soup was from fresh tomatoes with real cream and a shot of vodka that spiced it up just right. The I got the frischipastetli, a pot pie made with a beef and veal ragout with wild morels from the surrounding forest. The stew was well seasoned and tender, the potatoes still had their firmness, and the flaky pastel was perfect. Penny got the steinpilz ravioli, which she enjoyed. A fun family atmosphere, really good food, and kind attentive service (from people who speak at least four languages!) makes me want to go back.

We sat and watched others who sat after us receive their menus, water, bread and what looked like pleasant service. We almost walked out twice since it took so long to provide us with menus and then a very long time to get our food (served 25 minutes after ordering a simple pizza). As we waited we watched others who arrived after us receive their food. Waitresses struggled not to make eye contact with us as we looked for help. There were two other tables with people of color and they seemed to receive the same treatment. What a way to ruin a travel experience. Clearly African Americans are not welcomed in Lucerne.

The food is good and service was relatively quick mid-day Friday. The restaurant itself was cute and spacious. Docking a few stars down since after already paying a hefty bill (~$200 USD for 4 items), we were asked to tip with the waiter holding the keypad in front of us. This is the first time we were asked to add gratuity in Europe and it was a bit uncomfortable on the spot. Food was tasty but that interaction left a sour taste.

They have at least 20 different pizzas, but the highlight of the menu has to be either the young rabbits baked in the oven with a tasty sauce or the veal "haxe". They do have 5-6 main warm dishes and also some 3-4 cold ones and chicken nuggets for the little ones. The boullion soup was a bit too salty for my taste, but the tomato cream soup was very good. Service is fast and friendly, all dishes were very hot as they arrived, so were surely freshly prepared. Happy to recommend them if you are visiting the Rütli meadow or Seelisberg.

We were able to watch the cook make pizza from the table! I ordered a pizza with fresh meats and vegetables and it was outstanding. My partner had regular baked lasagna and was very happy also. We also had coffee, gelato and gluten free tiramisu. The staff went out of their way to accommodate for diners requiring gluten free and dairy free meals but were able to make standard options. The staff was well trained and took extra precautions to avoid cross contamination. During our visit the place was busy; a lot of big groups and families here and the staff was capable of serving us all in a timely manner. We took the 18/19 bus from central Lucerne and disembarked one stop after the hospital. It took about 10 minutes to and from.
