Wow! Total surprise. We were walking along St. Denis, looking at the options for dinner last night, when we noticed a small crowd on the front veranda for this place. We love Vietnamese food, and so this was a must-try.
First off, this place is BYOB, which is nice. There is a wine store less than a block away across the street. Their food is mostly seafood and chicken, so a Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc goes well.
We had lots to try, and to be honest, it was a GREAT deal, with our whole dinner for five hungry people coming in under C$40!!! I am a lover of chicken Pho (see my Tram's Kitchen review...) and was really, really happy to enjoy the offering here - it was delicious. A tad under-seasoned for my palate, but that is a good thing; you don't have to worry about hyper-salted food. The star anise and fresh young basil took over and let the delicate broth shine. The chicken pieces were grilled nicely and had a wonderful flavor.
We should have tried their seafood soupe, which is reportedly their house specialty - next time! We ordered their chicken with broccoli and mushrooms, and that was amazing when paired with vermicelli. Another dish for the table was the beef and bok choy; delicious. Spring rolls were served with a tasty peanut sauce, and I only wish we had asked for some pepper sauce or sanbal to go with that.
The owner was super friendly and even spoke with us in English, which I know is inconvenient for folks in Montréal sometimes - she understood that we meant no disprespect, and was very attentive and helpful.
Don't let this gem slip you by. It's great food, made by friendly folks. Enjoy it! We'll be back next time we are in Montréal! read more
