All the staff were occupied with other customers, so I had to flag one down to get our order going. I ordered an iced Viet coffee with a Pho Bo Vien, Pho Ga and Pho Dac Biet, all in medium size. We've been to the noodle shop too, waiting for an hour to get in, and it's delicious. But seriously - skip the line. Go to Pho Bac. After almost a week of eating delicious Quebecois food I was in need of Asian food. The make a very solid bowl of pho located in Montreal's Chinatown. Comes in 3 different sizes (small, large, and XL). Comes with Thai basil, bean sprouts, and a wedge of lemon. Also ordered a side of cha gio which came out piping hot and were delicious. They didn't come with herbs or lettuce to wrap the cha gio but the accompanying nouc cham was good. Service is quick and efficient. As soon as we sat down we had hot tea at the table and within about 5 minutes the waiter came over to take our order. Remember your table number since you'll need it when you go up to the register to pay at the end of your meal. This place is cash only, which seems to be the norm in Chinatown. The restaurant is clean, tidy, and bright. White tiles, white walls, and a faux sky painted onto the ceiling and in between some arches dress up the decor. On a cold night, this place really, really hit the spot! As anyone who's had more than a couple bowls of pho knows, for a 'simple' soup every place makes their a little differently. And everyone who likes pho likes theirs a little different and has their own favorite place. For us, Pho Bac was absolutely exactly what we look for. The broth was flavorful, but not too oily or too heavy on the basil or cilantro. Both the regular beef broth and the veggie broth were solid, usually the veggies broth turns out to be bland, but theirs was shockingly rich. It would have been decent except they used cheap quality, shredded lettuce that tasted off. - Bun bo xao sa (hoac ga) (#24) ($11.50) - beef sautéed with lemongrass on vermicelli and salad. Coming from NYC where we can get very good Pho this place is pretty much neck and neck with some of the good ones in NYC. The meat was sufficiently portioned for a large bowl. You get the raw beef round and also the cooked beef brisket that has some fat and nice flavor. They also give plenty of garnish to go with it all including scallions, cilantro, Thai basil, bean sprouts, lemon and even a chili pepper (be careful with the pepper). But what makes a Pho good is also the broth. This one was very meaty in flavor and savory at just the right amount. The noodles were cooked right and aldente. The broth could have been a bit more hot in my opinion. But other than that it was a winner in my book. Hit all the right notes and was warm and comforting for someone with tired legs in chilly weather. Another plus while we were there was a bunch of Vietnamese people eating there and really e enjoying the food. If their own people eat there, that's a really good sign. I wouldn't mind going back to try their spring rolls, summer rolls and other family style plates as well. All in all a good meal and reasonably priced. We came to Pho Bac 97 for a snack before dinner. We ended up ordering the bun bo hue. The original bun bo hue comes with pigs blood and pig feet. I opted out of that and only got rare beef. Usually the soup comes steaming hot and the rare beef gets cooked. In this case the soup was luke warm so basically my beef was rare the entire time. I was lucky I didn't get sick after eating that. Even my noodle was supposed to be milk noodles but was given pho noodles! Other than the temperature of the soup it was flavourful with a hint of shrimp flavour. It was pretty tasty.
