On our last night in Prague we wanted some good Czech food. We came upon this place and ate ate a table on the outdoor patio out front. We both ordered the roast beef with dumplings. It wasn't that pretty but it was surprisingly flavorful! It came with cranberry sauce with reminded me of what we Americans eat at Thanksgiving dinner. It tasted the same! It was nice with the dish. The best thing was dessert though! They had some delicious looking cakes in a display case and the Black Forest Cake looked amazing. It tasted even better than it looked! I swooned over every bite! Our sweet server brought 2 forks but I was glad my husband let me have the whole thing! This trip we traveled in Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia and Czech Republic. I had dessert everywhere-Sacher Torte in Vienna, Dobosh Torte Budapest (a close second to this), Linzer Torte in Linz, but this was hands down my favorite one! Hubby and I found this restaurant in Lesser Town in between our walking tours. The cozy restaurant had a pub feel. Service was polite. It was cold outside, so I had the goulash soup and Hubby the noodle soup. Both soups were good and hit the spot for warmth. We each had a Cesars salad, which was overly dressed. Prices were higher than other restaurants, but we think it is because it is in a tourist area. read more

I went to Restaurace Malostranská beseda because a group gathering was being hosted here. It seemed like a great spot, even though the employees didn't want us to enjoy it. The place was packed, which would be great for business in theory. They weren't staffed to handle us and didn't seem happy with us being there. It was too packed in the downstairs bar so we went to the outside patio for drinks. You had to sit at a table to be served. We put together two tables for our group of 5. At one point the server took one of our smaller tables away. The cramping around the remaining table unfortunately resulted in the spilling of a beer. It was challenging to flag down service, although we were ready, willing and eager to buy. We were about to order food dinner but were told we had to settle up and move into the more crowded section. I had ordered a goulash soup a little earlier to hold me over, which was tasty. Eventually, they said they ran out of glasses. My husband tried to hang on to his when going to the downstairs bar to order, but they took it away from him. We know when we aren't wanted. read more

Delicious dinner! They have both indoor and patio seating. We had the bread basket which was ok, they have a good Pilsner on tap. I had the pork tenderloin which was really juicy and cooked perfectly with bacon on the outside, lots o pork! It came with chick peas which were ok and green beans. I sampled the pork knuckle (which comes in half sizes) and the pork chop. Everything was really tasty. Service, like all Prague service, leaves something to be desired as all the staff seemed annoyed at our very existence. A true Prague experience! Do come here for tasty food! read more

We didn't choose this restaurant. This restaurant chose us. As part of our 6 hour guided walking tour of Prague (with Prague Urban Adventures), lunch was served here. There's plentiful indoor and patio seating overlooking the St. Nicholas Church Square. You seat yourself indoors or outdoors. Nice, clean restrooms shared by businesses in the building located upstairs. Czech food seems to get the reputation of being heavy and bland. We did not find that to be the case here and returned for lunch the next day as well. Beef Goulash - I could eat this for dinner every day. The beef was very tender and flavorful. The deep colored gravy is stewed in a light beer and I sopped up every bit with the bread dumpling. Pork Cutlet - I could eat this for lunch every day. This tasted perfectly light, despite being deep fried pork. The Viennese potato salad and tiny gherkin pickles were also perfect. Pork Knuckle - This is a very popular dish in Prague. We enjoyed it more here than at the other place where we ordered it. Impressive plate of meat! Mixed Beer - Our Czech tourguide recommended this! It's a light beer on the bottom, topped by a dark beer. Get this! It's not on the menu but they'll know what you mean if you just ask for a mixed beer. Of all of our meals during 1.5 weeks in Europe, our 2 meals here were among the top for quality, nice casual ambiance, not feeling touristy but the staff speaks decent English, and low price to top it off! Each of these dishes was equivalent to less than $10 US dollars. Highly recommended! read more

The food was good but the service was bad. I had their Goulash which tasted great and was reasonably priced (about 200 Kč). The service was bad, but for what I have been reading, characteristic of the area. What surprised me was the boldness of the waitress, who just kept €5 when I asked to get a €20 bill broken in order to give her a tip. She came back, gave me €15 and asked very loudly if it was ok, I was thrown back and just went with it. But, I felt that she was beyond rude and shameless to take an over 40% tip. read more

This place came recommended by our hotel concierge so my husband and I insisted on going where the locals go. I'd say this si a popular place for where people go for some grub after work. It was full of locals and we loved that. Our waiter was suuuuper nice and helped us pick out some traditional Czech dishes we might like. To start they bring you a basket with bread and some seasoned butter. We had to try some pickled cheese which was very good if you love strong cheeses. We had the beef goulash and wiener snitchzel. Delicious! But beware, the food is very heavy. If you have a weak stomach, I'd eat this earlier and with a Nexium. The food was very flavorful and portions were large. We finished with a delicious house made apple pie. Two beers, two wines, an appetizer, two entrees, a dessert, and digestive liquor later, and we only paid $45! My favorite restaurant in Prague. We go back every year we're in town. Aside from my (Czech) wife's goulash, this is the most insanely flavorful and delicious goulash ever. The dumplings are excellent. The Spanish Bird is also amazing. Fantastic soups. Everything is top notch and excellent ingredients and authentically Czech. And the Pilsner is ultra-fresh and expertly poured. For dessert, try the buns in vanilla cream sauce with fruit. So wonderful. Excellent coffee as well. This is a corporate pub in the Pilsner Urquell chain. Corporate pubs tend to have excellent interior decorating, corporate beer of whatever quality the corporation can come up with, and cookie-cutter standardized food - often prepared elsewhere and shipped in. This is no exception. I had hopes for the beer since many people love Pilsner Urquell. However, Pilsner and I typically don't get along - and even Pilsner Urquell from the mother ship could not get me to change my mind. The bar does not have a lot of interesting options outside of the home beer. (A standard line-up of globalized whiskies at the back yadda yadda yadda. Drinking Czech spirits means going with slivovice or absinthe. They had one or two token brands of each - despite the Czech Republic being in the middle of an absinthe explosion - and despite a long tradition of many fine slivovice variants.) I did not eat, but I did look at the plates coming out and I was not impressed with what I saw. The decoration is lovely (with a big top of a brew vat making a church-like dome over the bartender drawing the Pilsner Urquell.) But Czech bars and cafes are nearly universally good looking unless you stop in a dive by the highway. You can do better in a thousand other places in Prague. read more

A steal if you factor in the flavor of the food, and the location. I had a half liter of their recommended Czech beer and it was perfectly crisp, cold, and smooth. We ordered double mold cheese and beef tartare for appetizers, which is served with delicious fried toast. Each of the 2 dishes was perfect. Strong flavors yet balanced seasoning. Freshness of the beef came through in every bite. Simply flawless. For the entrees, we ordered the pork knuckle and duck, which were finger licking good. The duck (not too gamey at all) is served with pickled cabbage and the pork with slaw, mustard, and horseradish cream sauce. These were ideal accompaniments for the masterfully prepared meats, and enhanced the already magnificent flavors. The service cannot be complimented enough... We went there with our 2 year old and our server Jaroslav went far out of his way to assist us in keeping the toddler busy throughout the meal. He would appear with these puzzles and felt tip pens at regular intervals to keep her excited and occupied, as we actually got a chance to enjoy our meal. He is truly a gem of a guy, and an expert at customer service. Bravo and thanks Jaroslav. I can't recommend this restaurant enough. Just the best example of the anti tourist trap :) We plan to go back again tomorrow! read more

I personally think Pilsner Urquell is a bit overrated, but otherwise this place was great! Set in a great area with a fantastic view and wonderful people-watching. I ordered the gnocchi with bacon and sheep's cheese, which was incredible! One of the better dishes I had in my three and a half weeks in Europe to be honest. Creamy, smoky, and cooked to perfection. My friend ordered the wide noodles with smoked ham, spinach and cheese. While also delicious, some of the pasta was not cooked quite as well. It was also incredible how cheap it was - the gnocchi was around U.S.$6.50! I'd definitely recommend to anybody hungry in the area! Get that gnocchi!! read more

Eh, another tourist trap near the famous Church. Be aware that they charge for tap water and it is listed on the menu in Czech. The food is just ok, nothing spectacular and a meal will run about 180-240 czk which is a little over $10 USD. There's a large outdoor area to people watch if the weather is nice. We had the goulash for lunch and let me tell you, that thing was delicious! It reminded me of a spiced boeuf bourguignon without carrots and it was delicious!! Very juicy, fibrous, tender and tasty meat. I loved it! It comes with "dumplings." These are more like a sort of bread pudding/stuffing that is rolled up and boiled. Once cooked, they slice it and you have bread dumplings. It's perfect to eat with the sauce of the goulash and get all that delicious jus soaked up. Went at the recommendation of our hotel staff as a restaurant that includes locals and has traditional Czech food. Seemed like locals were there but it's right in the heart of tourist haven, so it's probably a mix. We both started with the soup of the day, a very hearty cabbage and sausage soup. I'd call it a stew as the broth was thick and very flavorful. We both enjoyed it very much, especially on a 40 deg. March evening. She had the roasted rabbit with potatoes. Had a very nice color and wonderful flavor. I had the "roast beef", a moderately tender, thinly sliced beef in a cream gravy (medium brown, looking more like a pork gravy to me than say a wine-based beef gravy). Came with bread dumplings that soaked up the gravy. As with the soup, a hearty, heavy course. And of course I had the obligatory 0,5 l Pilsner Urquell. I like it a lot, and drunk it in the US. Interesting to me is how much of a head they serve it with; must have been over two inches in the wide glass. The waiter spoke English and was fine (even cracked a smile once or twice). Not what I would call friendly, but served us well. Overall, very satisfying, though not a five star in my view. read more

Concierge suggested this place, it wasn't that great. The restaurant itself is very nice. However the food was ok. I ordered the gnocchi with sheep milk, I got diarrhea after. The hot wine was so strong I couldn't finish it. I asked for tap water and received still and charged for it. I was also charged for a bag when I took my food to go. Walking back from touring Praha (and the St Charles Bridge), my friends and I were famished. We did not want to eat in a typical touristy restaurant, but our selections seemed limited. We selected the restaurant based on the menu and were not disappointed, great traditional Czech cuisine, beer, dessert - all at an affordable price. We started off with 1 liter of the local pils (Pilsner Urquell), as typical of Czech, the local brew was cheaper than the coffee. We started the evening with goulash and duck pate. I had the roast duck - excellent. My friends had the traditional roast beef - his was excellent as well. For dessert, we tried a local dish, fruit (strawberry) boiled in a dumpling with whipped cream. When our bill arrived, we were surprised at the affordability of our meal. Truly worth considering visiting and eating in the restaurant. As a side note, you know that the place is good because while we were dining, we sat next to a table with nuns! Yes nuns! So if the place is good enough for those that serve God, the place is good for me too! read more

The interior is simple and as such I believe what makes it popular is its nice location right in Malostranske Namesti. I have been to couple of events here and I believe that rather than visiting this place for a beer, it is better to come here for eg. a company event as the space provides great opportunity to combine dining with a concert or dancing. read more

We had a truly wonderful dinner here. I had the roast chicken with vegetables and pesto and my partner had the king's skewer with Green beans. Perfect Pilsner Urquell beer tapped by Master Bartender. Great modern Czech cousine inspired by traditional old Czech cousine. Perfect service. OLDER FOLKS - BEWARE OF AGE DISCRIMINATION!!! We came to Prague for Christmas holiday. It was also my 62nd birthday. I'm from Prague but lived 2/3 of my life in US. We decided to have a birthday dinner at Malostranska Beseda. We came to the restaurant at the same time a a younger couple that was let in (no reservation). When we asked to be seated, we were told we needed a reservation. Since we did not have one, we were turned out. We waited dissapointed at the door for some time, deciding where else to go. During this time several younger couples with no reservation(!) came, and were let in. When we pointed this out, and asked again, we were told we needed a reservation. We cannot think of another reason but age discrimination why we were not let in. We found another place for a dinner but they did succeed to make us feel very unwelcome. Shame on them!
