We visited the beautiful u bulinu, not once, not twice, but three times during our stay in Prague. The staff were always friendly and the professionalism of their service was 5 stars. The food was spectacular, Goulash, Schnitzel, Deer, all of it was a testament to delicious Czech food with a modern twist. You cannot go wrong dining at U Bulinu in Vinohrady. U Bulínů is an excellent restaurant with a friendly and communicative staff. The food is outstanding, and personally, I can say it's my favorite place to enjoy delicious confit duck with cabbage and dumplings. As for the Karlovy Vary dumplings, in my opinion, they are the best in Prague. You might think this review is biased, but I strongly recommend visiting U Bulínů yourself and tasting it for yourself. My world traveler friend called U Bulinu "the best meal he had in Prague", so expectations were sky high. Walking in surprised it was a pub and not a sit down restaurant, but OK, let's see what you got. Menu comes on clipboard with lots of items. Scanning them over, disappointed no beef short ribs, chose the duck breast and beef goulash instead. Duck breast was done in cherry sauce with mashed potatoes. Outstanding. The beef in goulash just melted, so tender no knife was needed. Comes with potato pancakes. Excellent. Had to try dessert so we had the pistachio creme brûlée and the iced coffee. Creme brûlée soft and sweet with just a hint of pistachio although you could tell they were there. Ice coffee came with ice cream and whipped cream like a root beer float. Both delicious. Service was excellent. English speaking, very nice and pleasant. All this for 800 ckz (around $32 US) are you kidding me? My world traveler friend has good taste. One of the better places i've eaten at in Prague and it's located conveniently around Vinohrady which was near my hotel. Not another tourist trap like everything else. Choose outside seating if weather permits.. English menu and english-speaking, friendly staff were not taken for granted Portions were good, the cucumber lemonade was to die for... especially on a hot summer day. Traditional Czech food! This is a cool restaurant in Prague, serving up some great grub! They accept reservations, but when I arrived for an early dinner, it looked like I didn't need them. But it filled up quickly! I ended up getting the wild boar shoulder, with a cranberry and almond sauce, which was amazing. It was a gamier pork, but it seemed like it was slow cooked in the juices and sauce- it was amazing. They also serve up about four different beers- I went for the traditional Pilsner Urquell, a great Czech beer that I highly recommend. The decor of this place was interesting- it's like they found a bunch of old stuff, and tacked/welded it together in weird ways that don't make sense. Plumbing part lamps, and old pictures that have been edited with something different or modern. Weird stuff, but interesting! I can't recommend this place enough! For one thing, I was in an adventurous mood. Instead of going with duck or pork belly--two meals I know I would have enjoyed--I went with the...rabbit. I knew I was taking a risk. But it was a risk I wanted to take, and it paid off. The meat was so succulent, like a more flavorful chicken. The beer was rich and hoppy. We tried this place out on the recommendation of a close friend. She said the goulash was the best she'd ever had so I decided to try it out. We arrived and were immediately sat at a quaint two top in the middle of the restaurant. For being a Saturday afternoon it wasn't terribly busy, maybe 4 other tables. We ordered Pilsners and the venison pâté and boiled sausage for our starters. Surprisingly the venison pâté was phenomenal! It had pistachios in it and came with a cranberry sauce and bread. The boiled sausage came with spicy mustard and capers. The sausage was slightly undercooked for my liking. Sadly they were not featuring goulash on the menu when we were there so I opted for a beef roast entree instead. It came with carrots and potatoes and was filling. My husband ordered potato mushroom soup. We almost asked for the recipe for the soup because it was fricken awesome! If it were sociably acceptable I would've licked the bowl clean! The service was efficient and friendly. The staff were kind and presented us with English menus. Overall it was a great lunch in Prague. I would highly recommend the soup!! read more

Very good local fare. Tired Americans showed up hungry and this place did not disappoint. Their English is very good - you will not have an issue making yourself understood :). I had the goulash, which was very good, but VERY VERY salty. And I love salt. My companions had falafel, lamb shank and beef medallions in cream sauce. Out of the four MEALS, the beef was the most well-liked dish. Prices are excellent - our TOTAL bill was USD 69.80 INCLUDING a modest (but appropriate) 10% tip (4 dinners, 1 beer and 5 glasses of wine). Credit cards are accepted. Highly recommended. read more

This place was a staple of my study abroad experience and I've been here almost 10 times. I always wound up getting the same dish: the duck with cherry sauce with french fries substituted in and it's a worthy dish with some great flavors, but sometimes the cherry sauce is a bit overpowering and the prices are a little bit steep (it's about $12 for everything). I go here for some quick, nicer meals sometimes because it's close to one of the dorms, but it does get packed so you should either make a reservation or arrive early! For the desserts, I would recommend you get the hot raspberries because even though they're really sweet, it's delicious every now and then. read more

This is awesome restaurant. We originally didn't plan to go because it is opposite direction to old town. I am glad and delighted that we did. After 3 days eating at old town and new town, I feel that U Bulinu exceed most places in old town or new town. Do visit and if you have 24 hour transportation pass, this is right on tram 22, 23 route. We shared the duck salad which is very good portion. We also had the duck breast with cherry sauce and beef cheek in wine sauce. The portions are big but I cannot leave it unfinished, it was that good. read more

I cannot understand all of those raving reviews. Honestly. We have been there once when it was cold. We sat down and just put down our jackets on the bench next to us - as you would do in an almost empty (not too fancy) restaurant for lunch. A waiter came and told us that he wouldn't accept that and we would have to hang our jackets on the coat rack. He showed no mercy when we told him that we would rather have them with us. I just thought that behavior was very rude. Unsurprisingly, we didn't enjoy our lunch (although I can't remember if the food was really bad or just "meh"). We went back a few weeks ago - like grown ups - leaving that one bad experience in the past because their garden looked inviting and we wanted to give the place another chance since so many people seem to enjoy it. And the food was "meh". Just "meh". The soup contained way too much salt, the Svickova tasted very bland and was maybe one of the worst Svickovas I ever had...and I have had loads since I love that dish. There are SO many better options in the neighborhood, especially if you fancy the Czech cuisine! read more

This restaurant serves one of the most delicious and affordable meals I have eaten so far in Prague. There is a great collection of different traditional Czech dishes, and most of the main plates come with Czech dumplings as a side. The pork shoulder with bacon dumplings is absolutely amazing, as well as the rabbit leg dish. I highly recommend the homemade fruit teas that they have, which are a perfect complement to the meal. The only knock I have against this almost-perfect meal was the fact that even though we came when there were only 2 other tables being waited on, we waited nearly half an hour to receive our check after asking for it from 2 different waiters. I'll chalk this up to some rare mishap though, and will definitely be back before I leave. read more

Love this place. This has become our weekly "Sunday dinner" spot. It's obvious that a lot of care has gone into this place - from the decor to the fanciful story of how the restaurant came to be which takes up two pages of the menu. The staff is efficient, friendly and patient with questions and dietary restrictions. Fantastic food from huge menu of items - there is definitely something for everyone. I haven't met a meal here I didn't enjoy, I try to have something different every time, but the duck is one of my favorites. The portions are generous and they also have unfiltered Pilsner Urquell on tap. This non-smoking restaurant is large as Czech dining establishments go, but manages to never feel loud or crowded. read more

As noted by others, this is another restaurant that has English speaking staff and an English menu. Made a reservation for a Friday night at 8:30 and it appeared that was important, as the bright restaurant was rather full. Started with a glass of Czech red wine, which came served cold so it was hard to tell how good it was. The second glass was from Israel which was also chilled, so not sure how good that one was either. One starter was a finely chopped steak tartare. It was excellent and very flavorful, and came with great, thick butter toasted bread. It was a substantial dish; too much for a starter. The goose liver pate was tasty, especially with the cranberry sauce. The bread for this was not so great. It was also a large piece of pate. The rabbit was smoked, which was an unexpected surprise, and cooked perfectly, falling off the bone. It was really tasty. It included zucchini, carrots and celery, which were crisp, in a lot of a very mild mustard sauce. It could have used some potatoes to soak up the sauce. The lamb chops came in a very sweet port wine sauce. There wasn't much meat on the chops. It was accompanied by a pile of potatoes, that weren't quite mashed and were covered in fresh marjoram stems. The potatoes were boring. It was a bit of a challenge to get the server's attention to pay at the end, which was weird, because as soon as I put down my fork when nearly finishing my entrée, the waiter swooped in to clear it away. read more

From all the good reviews, I had a lot of expectations of a solid, fresh and generous czech styled meal. Unfortunately, not all these were fullfilled. First the the design and furnitures could use an update to create a warmer and cleaner atmosphere. I usually dont like modern slick cafes but U Bulinu is really too dated to my taste. The menu is certainly interesting and there is plenty of choice of meat, fish and starters which all sound classical and tasty. I appreciated the useage of local components and the effort to go beyond czech traditional recipes. The portions are very generous and they match the prices which I would describe as above the average czech standards. I really hoped the taste to be much better as too many of the components were from frozen, wrongly cooked or served too cold. It is a shame because, had everything been rightly done, it would have been a very very good deal for Prague. Especially as the service is professional, friendly and efficient. I will probably try again and see if we were unlucky because this restaurant has a much better reputation than we got served. read more
