Designed with a parking area for cars immediately in front of the rest area building and further down, parking for about a dozen trucks, there is also a separate "loop" area with breeze block picnic areas. Decently lit at night. When I arrived, I pulled into the loop area and backed the van up to one of the picnic areas for some shelter from the wind. Otherwise, I'd have been rocked by the cross breeze that night. Locked up and went to sleep. I was not at all disturbed by the noise as it's a good distance from the highway. I was also troubled for sleeping in the rest area. In the morning, I woke up and hit the road. I did not use the rest room in the rest area. Just wake up and go. Five stars for this rest area that is about an hour west of Albuquerque. There is another on the opposite side of the highway that looks to be laid out exactly the same. Topographically, it is one of the flattest areas in the United States, and rises to 450 feet above the surrounding great Plains." They sell them year round and have the good stuff, including some really big mortars, which were super tempting. There's also a dairy queen, and a few gas pumps, to round out anything you might need on your road trip! The staff is super friendly and accommodating. I dropped by at an off time to use the facilities, and they had no problem with that. Everything was reasonably clean as well. Overall you can't go wrong with dropping by here on any road trip. Just give yourself some time because there is a lot to look at and shop!

They've got a few fun throwbacks inside, like weight and horoscope machines and classic candy boxes that'll make you feel like you time-traveled to the 1950s. Just don't expect much in the way of snacks or souvenirs -- the offerings are pretty minimal. And fair warning: those fortune machines might take your coin and your curiosity but won't actually spit out a fortune (mine's still pending). Do not be on your phone when walking around and pay attention to your surroundings. I didn't notice a young western diamondback rattler in the bathroom with me until I sat down to do my business. Thankfully, the rattler stayed in his/her area but I feel a bit of my privacy was taken away. Thankfully, I could wash my hands and leave the restroom without a nasty bite and my husband rescued me and others by using a caution sign to move the snake outside.
