    Mold on air vent

Rented a home Mermaids Den for week of Christmas. Chose this home for the location and size. Arrived to a home that needed a deep clean and was overall a disappointment. Yes, the pool was closed but we weren't expecting it to be a marshy pit of trash and chair cushions that we would have to look at all week. Dust was everywhere, mold all in the shower and on air vents. Uneven boards on pool deck almost caused one of us to fall into the marsh pool. They offered to send a cleaning crew, however who wants a crew of people in the house while your family is there .... When the house should have already been cleaned... I asked for some sort of refund as this home was almost $4k, the owner refused and resort realty only offered a $100 gift certificate. No thanks , we won't use you again...and don't suggest anyone else does either

Unfortunately I have nothing good to say about our last experience with this company. They advertise houses and show photos on their website that don't remotely look like the conditions of the homes they rent you. And they take no responsibility for that. I was told "they are trying to get the owner to make repairs", as if that absolves them of responsibility. I felt defrauded. They rented to me something that was completely misrepresented. Also they will not publish your honest reviews on their website, so going by reviews is misleading. The house we rented in Duck, NC, looked great in their photos, 3271 - Buena Vista, but my photos below show you what the condition was actually like. The house was unsafe. No one with children should stay here.

We have been renting homes in the Outer Banks for more than 25 years and have never had such a horrific experience as we did last SUMMER at the Sand Dancer property. On the first day of vacation there was a smell of sewage in the upper master bedroom where my wife and I slept. Thinking it might simply be a dead mouse, we checked the fireplace, closet and pulled the furniture away from the walls and found nothing. The smell seemed to be coming from behind the headboard and when we pulled the shades over the bed aside, we were utterly horrified to see that the window (which was comprised of 40 plastic blocks to resemble block glass) were filled with stagnant, putrid water, sludge and mold. Please refer to all the photo documentation. We immediately called Resort Realty and spoke with the Property Manager, Scott Muller. He said he would be contacting the owners and get back to us with a resolution. The stench was so bad, we were unable to sleep there and had to remove all our belongings from the closets. As a result, we had to make our family double up and lose their bedrooms so we could move to the lower bedroom. We chose this house specifically for the 5 bedrooms and the extraordinary ocean view from the master suite. Once we relocated to the lower bedroom, we discovered the same issue of sludge and mold in those block windows, but the stench was contained. My wife who is highly allergic to any mold or mildew couldn't sleep because she was so concerned about what she was sleeping under. Upon arrival the home was infested with thousands of midges surrounding every window and door of both decks. We called reservations immediately and they put in a ticket for Outer Banks Extermination to come treat. They showed up 6 days later. Additionally, we told the realtor there was black mold in a bathroom, the screen door of the master was shredded beyond repair so we could not open the door. Scott told us he was sending maintenance to address those issues, but no one ever came. The realtor said the mold issue could not be handled by maintenance and would need a professional contractor to replace all the windows and there was no way to get that done during our stay. He said he needed approval from the owners and would get back to us. Two days later they informed us he would be out of the office on vacation, but informed us that Teresa, another Property Manager, would be contacting us the following day which she never did even after my wife left messages for her. You can imagine, after a year and a half of isolation, how much we looked forward to our annual trip. This ordeal was nothing short of a nightmare. The stress, frustration and time devoted to dealing with it, completely ruined our vacation. We made it very clear to Scott that we work in Advertising and PR in Manhattan and are prepared to take every step necessary. We have already located the property owners' contact information and would rather not be forced to contact them. The last thing we wish to do is retain an attorney, but, if necessary, we will. We know the importance of positive reviews in the travel industry and how negative reviews impact a business' success (i.e. the Better Business Bureau, media outlets, travel sites, etc.). This property is a disaster, and the owners told us, when we asked if the repairs had been made that "We are not interested in renting to you." I have never written such a scathing review, but our Summer vacation was ruined. STAY AWAY.

Although the cottage we rented-7563 SEA Dreams could use some more updates and maintenance that is not really an issue. The issue was the cleanliness. The drip pans were rusted the bottom of the trash can was nasty there were used coffee grounds in the coffee pot mold on the refrigerator and the edges of the shower were dirty. We made the best of it but won't stay here again.

    These things surrounded the house!

Unfortunately, we stayed at 1562 Coucher Du Soleil. The outside of the house was filthy. Dead bugs and cobwebs everywhere. We wouldn't even use the front door because of this. The decks were covered in cobwebs and spiders. Orb Weaver spiders surrounded the house. My kids wouldn't even walk outside because of this. My husband had to hose down everything before we could use the pool area because of them, every morning! Never used the decks because of this. I was told by maintenance that the house is treated monthly for insects. I would ask for a refund because I don't think it's working. By our second week we had water bugs on the top floor, in the living room, bedroom and bathroom. Ask why I didn't call Resort Realty.....because I had called them everyday the week before and I was tired of calling and getting no satisfaction!! I had called Monday, the 23rd, 3 times and on the 24th, 4 times and never received a phone call back until the evening of the 25th. There are rotten boards on the path to the Sound. Very dangerous. We rented a house on the Sound to be able to go out there and enjoy it. Walking out there with kids was not possible. My husband fell through one of the boards and hurt his ankle. The internet went out! Again, had to call the realtor. Did they do anything or answer my call or voicemail all..Nope! I finally got to speak with Jeanine (she's delightful..NOT!) and after giving me attitude told me that someone would come out the following day to check the internet. I waited all day for someone to come and finally called again. Jeanine answered, yay me, and told me that someone was on his way. Well, the guy did absolutely nothing. He did the same thing that my husband did, but he called Spectrum and told me that the internet was out and I was to call Spectrum if I wanted updates. I personally don't think I should be the one doing this since I was the one on VACATION. But I did it and guess what....I was told that there was no issues and the internet was NOT out in our area. Of course I called maintenance back and got no answer. Bottom line, there was no issue with the internet...guess who fixed it?? MY husband! I would be so embarrassed if I were the home owner.

Never have I ever experienced such poor customer service. No one can ever be reached at the office in any of the departments. They are highly unflexible and unwilling to even help. After paying $14k for a house you would think you could get good customer service. No towels at all were in the entire home as they were advertised & promised. Also, beds were not made and the sheets that were left for beds were all the wrong sizes; the individual shrink wrapped packets had all different sizes standard pillow, queen sheet, king flitted! Piles of rusty beach chairs thrown in corner, bugs under comforter, bugs in multiple areas of house( not the typical type you expect and amount; these were from not cleaning) Elevators didn't work(Had been shut down and locked) after being advertised as the perfect home for elderly to use for ease of access. Also NO PHONE OR LINE! What if my poor mother needed to call 911? She certainly doesn't understand or feel comfortable with smart phones. I think that's even against the law to not provide. Along with several other issues that would take forever to type out that we just dealt with because getting assistance was impossible! They wouldn't even allow for an 1 hour later checkout so my 81 year old mother wouldn't be rushed. I had tried contacting them to ask for it thruout the course of our stay; even emailed several different email addresses. We have been coming to OBX for decades and this is the 1st and last time we will ever use them! They happily took our money when reserved but everything afte5 that was rude, uncaring and more defensive and annoyed with having to deal with issues. We stayed in Salt Spray Vacation Home in Corolla, NC! Use any other Vacation Rental Office instead! Our 2 week vacation would have been so much more memorable if we had used Twiddy, Sun or Joe Lamb like we have in the past. Lesson learned

    Water damage and mold

Property 1537 was awful beyond words! Pulling up to the property was our first indication that something was amiss: grass was several feet high, garbage was laying around everywhere with overflowing trash cans, and the facade was falling off. Then when we walked in, there was water damage on all of the ceilings and you could see visible mold. The couches had stains on them and they felt wet, there were cockroaches all over the place, the refrigerator didn't work, and a condom wrapper was found in my niece's bedroom. It was filthy beyond belief and definitely was not clean. DON'T STAY AT PROPERTY 1537 in MontereyShores!!!!!!! I don't even think it deserves one star but I couldn't post it without putting a star up.

The listing was inaccurate, and several amenities that were clearly advertised were either broken or not available at all. Some bathrooms didn't even have basic supplies like toilet paper. One shower had such low water pressure it was completely unusable. The dishwasher was broken for the entire week, which meant hand-washing dishes for 14 guests, three meals a day, for seven days. That is not what anyone signs up for on vacation. The house itself was not properly cleaned. There were cobwebs on multiple surfaces, visible rust throughout, and an overall neglected feel. For the price we paid, the condition of the property was unacceptable. Customer service was effectively nonexistent. We reported the issues, and nothing meaningful was done to resolve them during our stay. There was no urgency, no accountability, and no effort to make things right. Also worth noting: reviews appear to be filtered, showing only glowing feedback. Based on our experience, you are not getting the full picture when you read the listings. For the amount of money these homes command, expectations should be much higher. We would strongly recommend considering another rental company. You've been warned. Terrible consistent reviews on TrustPilot, Yelp and many other pages. The feeling is clearly unanimous and Twiddy clearly does not care.

Vents were caked with mildew, the bath mat was filthy, and dishes and cutlery had been put away wet and dirty. Dust covered the pendant lights and furniture throughout, triggering allergies for all of us. Absolutely zero effort had been made to maintain this property. The deck was riddled with rusty nails--my children were literally picking them up, an outrageous and dangerous hazard. The pool area was no better: the pavers around it were so scorching hot they became unsafe to walk on. We endured because of a death in the family, but this property was disgraceful. I would never rent again, nor would I trust any property under Twiddy's management.

I don't recommend ever working with them. They are a shady company. We stayed at Frosty Shores in the 4x4 section of Corolla. Check-in & Cleanliness - Check-in was 4:00 PM. When our group arrived at 4:45, the house had not been cleaned from the prior week. I called the property manager, and the cleaners (a father and son) arrived shortly after -- asking us not to mention to the manager that they were late. We had already called. The initial clean was inadequate. The next day we visited the property manager's office (they had asked the lease signer to come in to verify occupancy during beach week) and used that opportunity to report what we had found: broken glass on top of the refrigerator, dirty floors, a master bath drain that wouldn't drain, and a ripped screen on the master bath sliding door upstairs. The property manager sent someone to fix the drain that day and took the screen for repair -- it was returned four days later. As the week went on, we continued to notice issues: sheets that didn't feel clean, a stain on a bedding cover, a suitcase stand with two legs unscrewed, and a refrigerator door shelf that fell and broke when we loaded drinks onto it. The cleaners returned (father, son, and mother) and asked what the problem was. When we explained, the son pushed back, insisting they had cleaned. They did acknowledge they don't clean the foyer because "people track in dirt," don't pick up trash outside the house, and don't do deep cleans. They cleaned for about 15 minutes. The broken glass on top of the refrigerator was never removed. The house continued to feel dirty and dusty throughout the stay, which was uncomfortable for several adults and kids alike. Following up with Brindley afterwards and asked for a discount due to the cleaning issue and they said it is in their lease that they don't reimburse for cleaning issues. What a disappointment. They don't stand by their agreements in the lease (to provide a clean environment) and yet hold firm when making it right with the customer. Listing Misrepresentation - The listing photos do not reflect the current state of the property. The family room and den furniture shown in the photos was different from what was actually there. There was no foosball table and no second refrigerator as pictured. The listing should be updated to accurately represent what guests will find. Beyond the photos, the house felt run down. None of the upstairs windows had screens, making it impossible to open them for a cross breeze. Outdoor cushions on the lower deck were left stacked on top of an exterior cabinet rather than stored inside it -- they had visible holes, rips, and were dingy. They should be repaired, cleaned, and stored in the cabinet, or replaced. Leaving them in plain sight reinforced the overall sense of neglect. Bottom Line - Given the price and the listing photos, my expectations were significantly higher than what we experienced. The listing photos need to be updated to accurately reflect the house. The property needs a thorough deep clean and general freshening. And the nightly rate should reflect the actual current condition of the home.

We rented a beautiful oceanfront house in Duck last week, and the experience was nearly ruined for our group thanks to Village. Special shoutout to Nikki and Noah for being particularly incompetent and unhelpful. Timeline breakdown of our experience and pictures below, lest the company dare accuse me of exaggerating our account of events. Day 1: Upon 4p check-in, we thought we'd driven up to the wrong house. Multiple commercial trucks blocked the driveway, and the house looked like a construction zone. Railings were MISSING on the steps and back balcony; equipment, nails, wires and boards were strewn everywhere (see pictures). Contractor stickers were still on recently-replaced windows. The pool we'd paid $350 to ensure was heated and cleaned was cold and filthy (see pictures). Our group couldn't even get in the driveway. Everyone was shocked and upset. I immediately called Village and explained the situation. I spoke with Nikki and then Noah. At first; they did a good job of at least appearing to care. They asked for pictures, which we promptly provided; and claimed to have no knowledge of the owner scheduling construction on the house for that day. They offered dinner coupons to a random restaurant for our group. When we made it clear that wasn't going to cut it, and we were concerned we may need to move to another house altogether due to the associated safety concerns, they told us they'd make the situation right, would send us alternate rental options, and wouldn't leave that day until they'd addressed our concerns. That ended up being total lip service, because after I hung up the phone, they completely ghosted us for the rest of the week. No follow-up contact whatsoever. When we called back a few minutes after 5 the same day, they'd closed up for the day, in spite of assuring us they wouldn't leave before making the situation right. The contractors didn't leave the house until 830 that evening. They left a massive pile of boards and construction materials in the yard, along with nails still strewn everywhere (see pictures). These remained for the rest of the week. Day 3: Monday morning I called Village back and spoke with Nikki. She sounded less-than excited to hear from me; didn't ask any follow up questions about our situation from Saturday, and said she'd have to transfer me to Noah to discuss restitution. I wish I were joking, but she put me on hold and NO ONE picked up. I waited 15 minutes (15 minutes!!) before hanging up and calling back. They were clearly screening my call because no one answered. At this point, I'm in shock that a company with such pathetic customer service and obvious blatant disregard for their customers is still in business. I sent a follow up email requesting a callback. Shocker: no response. Day 5: After giving them over a day to respond to our email, my partner and I decided to drive to the Corolla office in person. At that office, we meet with Noah - (supposedly) a different Noah, who tells us he will send a message to the Noah we spoke with and have him follow up with us. Surprise surprise, we hear nothing. Day 6: We try calling again, speak with someone who won't give her name and tells us Noah conveniently isn't working that day. At this point, we're so disgusted with Village that we decide to ensure everyone on the internet knows about our experience. Hopefully, owners with otherwise beautiful houses will think twice about the associated guest experience repurcussions and avoid working with Village in the future. We ve been coming to OBX for many years. This is the first year we've ever had an issue with the realty company. Please do yourself a favor and rent with anyone else in OBX but Village.

We decided to shift to a pet friendly house this past week so it wasn't a three-peat . However he's still a puppy and was way too interested in chasing cats, and this one particular fox. So we just booked for a September stay in 2015, without Smuckers. I can't say enough good things about this place, and its owner. In all the years I've been down there I have never had the owner pay a visit on day one, which by itself says a lot, but there was also a gift bag. I try not to forget anything, but inevitably I'll forget one of the following; garbage bags, paper towels, pin for an air pump, batteries, etc. In addition to all the goodies one might forget, there was also a bottle of wine. Who does this? What an amazing gesture. With that said, even without the owner's kind actions, the house in and of itself is great. I don't know what their repeat rate is, but it has to be high. This house is perfectly located in Corolla, close to both Harris Teeter (which if you are still one of those people going to Food Lion, stop it, just stop it right now) and Tim Buck II. I'm not going to sit here and detail the house out, check out the site and trust me that it's as advertised. I will say that you should note that the pool is heated at no additional cost; this is usually not the case. The weather back in 2013 was amazing. High 70's the first few days and low 80's the rest of the week. And no wind! My better half is what made this trip the best one I'd ever had in the time I'd been going. Every morning you make yourself some breakfast, a bloody mary, and you watch the sun go up on the dune deck. Then you set up your beach spot. Head back inside to shower up, fix up another bloody mary and you walk along the beach (3 miles, 5 miles,7,8,9,11 - a little sore after the last couple). Come back and jump in the heated pool, out the beach, make some sandwiches, back out to the beach, then back into the pool (Chicken Balls!). Before you know it, it's 5PM and time to shower up and get ready for dinner. And that's every day - life is good. If you've narrowed it down and Page's Place is a finalist, or if you're just on the fence about it, get off the fence and jump in the pool. You will not be disappointed.

There are enough 'spots' for those who wanted to play games or those who wanted to sit and talk. Don't be fooled by the pics on the realtors website, though. Those were taken when the house was in its prime...several years ago. It's run down and needs attention. First and foremost - a thorough cleaning. It's dirty, some appliances didn't work (restaurant steamer, ice machine inconsistent oven heat), furniture and carpet is stained and the tile around the pool is broken and sharp. There are several other issues, but all are fixable if they would tend to the house better. Might be ok if we were paying off season prices, but not worth 23k+ for mid summer. Good family reunion vacation - but many improvements are needed on this house - and that thorough cleaning needs to be done, pronto.

Sense the day we got here I didn't notice a lot of spiders inside. Even the photographer that we hired for my sister's senior pictures said "that is strange, there usually aren't this many bugs inside". 2 stars

The beach was a short walk from the house on what seemed to be a newly constructed boardwalk. It made traveling back and fourth with the kids & beach accessories very easy. We enjoyed the outdoor shower and toilet for pool days, very convenient. Another thing we were happy about were the two large refrigerators in the kitchen. Unfortunately, this house did not live up to the expectations we had. Most of us have been coming to OBX for years and have always had beautiful, clean homes. When we first arrived, the trash cans outside were over flowing with the prior renters trash. Once inside, it did not smell clean nor did it look clean. There was leftover popcorn in the loft seating area on the floor, the air vents on the ceiling were disgusting. They were blowing dust and filth from them, and there was mold growing on the ceiling of the loft area. The deck has nails and wood sticking up all over. Do not walk on the deck barefoot for anything, you will get splinters like many did in our house. There's nails sticking up on the stair steps leading down to the pool. It's clearly not taken care of. There were broken chairs on the deck sitting in the corner and also broken chairs all thrown into a pile in the pool area. On the back closed in porch, while we enjoyed sitting out there, the screens were busted in or in some cases missing. The mini fridge in the game room was totally missing. We discovered at breakfast the first morning that pots and pans were sparse. We actually went out and bought a lager frying pan and left at the house. There was no way we could cook large dinners with the pans there. There were also a lot of large bugs found in the house, so much that we had to call and they sent out someone to spray. They don't advertise a grill, which is good because they have an old charcoal grill built into the ground on the side of the house that has grass grown up all around it. We ended up taking our own tail gating grill and it worked great for dinners. We love OBX so much, my husband and I even got married there a few years ago. This was such a huge disappointment and next year we will be staying elsewhere. I would not recommend this property to anyone.
