After Republic Services bought out Tenleytown Trash, they all but stopped servicing our address. I had to call and email countless times during hot weather to practically beg someone to pick up our overflowing trash. It was ridiculous. In September 2021, I emailed Dispatch yet again to cancel the account effective October 1, 2021. They were no longer servicing our address at this point EXCEPT when I called to complain and ask for a pickup. Dispatch finally removed the bins on October 14 (after I emailed them again). Once the bins were picked up I figured service was officially cancelled. WRONG. Republic Services sent my building a bill just the other day. Then someone called to update our payment information as we had stopped automatic payments. I explained to the representative what happened: that I had cancelled service for the building back in October, and we have not had bins or service since then. Then today I received this email from their Sales department (see photo). Apparently Dispatch never told Sales I was cancelling the account. They also never told Sales they were no longer servicing the address. And they certainly never told me I needed to send a certified letter to anyone to cancel the account! Bottom line: Avoid Republic Services at all costs. They are a massive headache! read more

Just an update to say that while the kind folks below responded to my email immediately to say they had referred the matter to the local team, it's been a week and no response from said local team. Another owner spoke to customer service on the phone who offered to cut the bill to $660/month (still 4x the price others are quoting) but still can't produce the alleged automatically renewing three-year contract they claim the association entered into in 2007. How they can enforce the terms of a contract they can't produce, I do not know. Of course, such a contract is illegal under DC Commercial Code, as they'd have to explicitly notify when renewal was imminent -- and we can't find any evidence that's ever happened. STAY AWAY FROM THIS COMPANY! Tenants in our building have requested to change trash services after numerous complaints about missed pick ups and failure to separate recycling (despite being charged for a separate service, I've seen recycling bins get dumped in with trash on multiple occasions). It's been at least 3 missed pick up dates - with the company contacted by my landlord and fellow tenants - and still no pick up. We've requested a 2nd trash bin because of the irregular pick ups and overflow. This is hazardous, attacks pests and rodents to our property. It's gotten so bad I'm filing a complaint with the city. If I could provide negative stars, I would. Our building Tenleytown contract was acquired by Republic. Since then, they have missed MULTIPLE trash and recycling pickups. We're a small, self-managed building, and our dumpster is overflowing with trash. This week, when they missed the pickup, again, I called-- AGAIN-- to get the "missed pickup" taken care of. I was told the issue was being "escalated" (due to how many missed pickups we've had) and that the driver would come the next day to pick up the missed pick up and that someone would call me back about this issue. No surprise: not only did no one come to pick up the missed pickup, they in fact skipped the NEXT scheduled one, too. Obviously no one ever called me back about the "escalated situation." So we're overflowing with trash and recycling and have no way to get it picked up. We've had to deal with so many missed pickups, and now I'm wondering if literally our trash will ever be picked up again. And there's no way to talk to someone locally in your area who runs the routes or whatnot-- and of course the service center isn't open on the weekends-- and and and. We're ACTIVELY looking for an alternative (in DC) and if anyone has suggestions, please message me ASAP. read more

I have called 5 times in 6 days, each time assured by the rep that the trash would be picked up and that someone would call me back to confirm. No pick ups, no calls. You get what you pay for! Really, really wish I could give these folks negative stars. Like almost all the other recent reviews, my job had a contract with Tenleytown which was acquired by Republic Services. We are supposed to get regular pick-ups 3 days a week and they miss at least one pick-up. My office manager is on the phone with them at least twice a week and constantly gets the run-around. They have zero accountability and every person you speak to in the company is extremely rude. My job has a lock on the dumpsters (we are required to by law) and they have lost the key multiple times. Today they came for their pick-up and again did not have the key. It only took a few minutes for our security to notify a manager to bring the key down and they tried to drive away without doing the pick up. I stepped out to open the dumpsters for the drivers and their driver helper got out of the truck and started yelling at me! Saying that he didn't lose the key and it's not his job to keep track of it ... but yet we signed a contract with RS saying that's exactly what they would do! The funny thing is their office is within a short driver of our location. The same truck drove past us later in the afternoon when one of our employees was on break and she could hear the driver yelling out his window at our business as he drove by. We had chosen RS initially because they were much cheaper than their competitors but after today we will likely cancel our contract. My building had a contract with Tenleytown which was acquired by Republic. Republic did not pick up our trash consistently and was unresponsive. We recently had to switch companies, and now they won't pick up their receptacles. Our building's parking is blocked by this issue and it's causing problems for our residents. I would not recommend this company for your private trash collection they will quote you one price and then add extra fees each quarter fuel/environmental recovery fees. When you call to cancel service, they will reduce your bill to be competitive, then continue to do the same thing all over again. I finally cancelled in August they charged $60 to come pick up the containers, also charged me with a month's worth of fuel and environmental fees for one trip total bill $98.66. read more

Apparently, Republic Services has taken over Tenleytown Trash in Washington, DC. We had good service with Tenleytown over the years. Since the takeover, our level of service has dropped dramatically. They are supposed to come to our condo 3 times a week. They came once last week and not at all this week. The excuses are relentless. The rats and the stench are overwhelming. There is no one to call. Cant find any information on the website. We occasionally get an email response with apologies and more excuses. Dont know what to do. read more

Like many of the other reviewers, Republic Services took over our Tenelytown trash account. Since November, to present - January 7th- our trash, which is scheduled to be picked up twice a week has been picked up MAYBE four times. We've called numerous times regarding missed pick-ups only to be promised a pick- up and have no one show. At this point our trash is overflowing and hasn't been picked up in over TWO weeks. Although today is our scheduled day of pick up, I was told that no one would be picking up our trash due to a schedule push back. This is unacceptable. at this point it's creating a health hazard. Please be weary of this company. We are currently looking for an alternative trash collection company as this is an ongoing issue and customer service has been poor. I am also considering reporting this company to the DC AG's office due to the fact that I am paying for services I am not receiving. This company is terrible. Multiple times they have missed trash pickup days. They are unreliable and when we finally moved out, we left the trash bins out for pickup. They claimed we didn't and charged us for both bins. Since we have moved out and after countless calls and emails, we had no choice but to pay it for the trash bins that they probably have in their possession. They are horrible with correspondance and following up. Multiple times i was told i would get a call back within 24 hours by a manager and it never happened. Terrible company and a scam. I signed a contract for trash removal for 3 years for $193/month. The first month they upped what they were charging me to $232.29. I have someone else paying my bills for me since I am unable to do by this myself and unbeknownst to me, their fees have gone up to $344.56 per month and I have been paying this for 2 1/3 years! I contacted them and wanted my money back and they pointed out some fine print on the contract, which is too small to see, which states that they can raise their rates for no particular reason. Can you imagine? Further, when I told them I wanted out of the contract, after being so deceived, they threatened that they were going to come after me for liquidated damages. What a sham of a company. I will continue to bad mouth them on every platform I can. Within a year and a half the prices of my services doubled. When I cancelled they informed me I was paid up to date and gave me information about placing my containers to be picked up. They also informed me that they were waiving the removal fees. Since then I have received two bills from them. One was for $93 to pick up two trash cans. Not a typo $93 to pick up two trash cans. When I contacted their customer service they informed me that whoever I talked to was misinformed and they are unable to remove these fees. Anyways, I found a much cheaper service in my area, was able to pay for an entire year of services for what 3 months of republic was costing me. I plan on informing as many people in my area as possible to switch services. Horrible experience with this company. Do yourself a favor and shop around. read more

First, the good: Republic collected our trash on schedule and tidily; no scraps left behind. But the bad: Their cancellation policy is outrageous and strictly enforced. They bill prospectively, very three months. In our case, most recently, from September 1 to November 31. We moved on September 15, and I called to terminate service. They made clear that they would offer no refund for the remaining 75 days in the cycle, AND that they charge $30 to pick up their bin, and will charge the cost of the container if the bin is not rolled--by the property's new owner--to the curb. Had we known in mid-August (before we issued payment) that we would be moving, and had read their cancellation clause, we would have cancelled service then (and still had to pay the bin pickup fee), and and found a short-term service provider. Additionally, their service is much more expensive than other local disposal companies. So--don't use Republic; you can surely do better locally. read more

I had them for years and when I moved they didn't seem to understand I moved and kept billing for trash pick up that wasn't happening because I moved. They promised if I paid them money for services I wasn't getting that they would clear me with the credit bureau. They took my money and ran This company doesn't want to provide a service. They want your money and then will not provide the service. They need to be shut down immediately. When I see their dumpsters I go in and talk to the owner and have them remove them as their trash pick up. They are God awful. Well what can I say about this trash company lets see well they hit my car in April 2016 it has taken 2 months to finally get someone to call you back then after they come take pictures of the damage they have someone from Arizona call you and tell you OH we are not paying for the damage because your damage does not measure up to our bumper...Well first off the bumper is not what hit my car they either backed into it or hit it with the dumpster when they moved it (Yes the dumpster was moved) I also have witnesses who seen the trash truck come in then my car alarm go off and the truck leave at a high rate of speed so what does that tell you (They hit my car and was trying to get away) so now I am going to either have to pay $920.18 out of my pocket for the damages or hire a Lawyer and SUE and get the damages, lost time at work, lawyer fees and pain and suffering so which one do you think I am going to do.I tried to be nice and patient well NO MORE. read more

They do not believe in customer service and purposely tries blindsides you on their contract. Please do not sign anything without asking how long the contract is for. They will try to blindside you with a three year contract. I was offered a lower price but then the offer was negated when I was ready to sign. If I could give them 0 stars, I would. We used them for four years for residential waste pickup, and it was a HUGE mistake. The only reason we never switched was because we didn't want to deal with the hassle. And a hassle it was (and it probably would have been worth it...!) After about 3 months of service, our trash and recycling bins disappeared after service one day. I find it hard to believe that my neighbors just randomly stole ours, yet Republic required us to pay for them to bring out another set of bins. They would routinely just dump our trash and recycling all over the street when servicing our bins - and on several occasions, the bin would still be half full after servicing. Then...when we cancelled service, that was when the real party began. We cancelled it effective the end of July. Since our movers were coming the first weekend in August, we queried what it would take to keep service through the first week of August. They informed us that we would have to pay an initiation fee and all kinds of service fees, so we said "no thanks, we've already cancelled, so we'll just work it out ourselves". I got an automated call the day before our final trash pickup (the last week of July), telling me to put our bins out EMPTY by 6am so they could pick them up. I called Republic and said "I can't put them out EMPTY because you have to service them - and we had scheduled bin pickup for the first week of August. The customer service rep seemed confused and told me that they don't give out automated calls regarding picking up bins - and she assured me that they would NOT be taking our bins the next day, but in early August, as scheduled. The next morning, they came and took away our bins (they were full). *smh* I received a final bill which noted that we were due a refund (we paid in advance for 3 months of service, and were due back 2 of those), and I thought everything was fine. I moved across the country, and then got ANOTHER bill, telling me that I owed for the next two months AND for bin pickup. They applied the "refund" we were due to the next two months service and I owed for the bin pickup. What?! So, I called them. Customer service was apologetic, removed the two months bill, and seemed mystified as to why someone had randomly re-opened our account. She also removed the bin pickup fee because of the hassle and the fact that they had likely removed our bins 3 months into our service anyways. However, since we had already PAID the two months, we were still due a refund. I didn't get the refund. THEN, a month after we had cancelled the account, I got an automated phone call asking me to put my bins outside by 6am so they could remove them. WHAT?! They had already taken the bins away...a month ago! I commented on their website asking them to NOT come to my (former) house to try to remove bins because any bins they removed wouldn't be mine! I DID log into into the account, though, and remove all forms of payment (including my debit card which was used for auto bill pay). Yet, this morning, I got notification that the bin pickup fee had been debited from my account. SO, I called them AGAIN this morning, and the woman said that my payments weren't showing up in her system, but assured me that my full refund (for the bin pickup AND the last two months of payments) were "on the way". I'll believe it when I see it. **Update: It's now been 5 months since we cancelled service. There has been no refund. I'm not surprised, and yet still irritated and frustrated. Worst company ever. They missed several pickups at my condo in NW DC over the course of a few months in 2015. Each time our board or property manager called, they insisted that the collection had been made. They continued to insist that they had not missed collection even when we would send them photos of overflowing dumpsters later in the same day that they claimed to have serviced our building in the morning. Sometimes it would take 5 or more phone calls to get our account rep to even return our calls. According to our property manager, Republic practically never responded to emails either. When our board decided to switch to Tenley because their price was one third (!!!) the price of Republic and included an extra collection day each week, Republic tried to bargain and said they would match Tenley's price. When we declined, they sent us a certified letter threatening to sue for $6,000 for damages to their company. SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS. Really?!? Do yourself a favor and stay as far from this shady business as possible. Check out Tenley instead. Four months in and they have not missed a single pickup. read more
