The goal is to teach individuals life skills while serving up yummy drinks. My boyfriend and I tried out North Star Cafe before heading back to Boston and fell in love with the people, the space, and our drinks. The barista we had was honest and didn't hesitate at all in critiquing every flavor choice on the menu which my boyfriend and I appreciated! We knew we were in great hands when he recommended and made us what he loves most on the menu. I got a coconut/white chocolate mocha and my boyfriend got a classic mocha - both iced with whole milk. We both love almond milk, but the barista we had that morning said we simply could not ruin his drinks with almond milk... so whole milk it was! Honestly, this cafe is amazing and I wish we still lived in Rochester so I could frequent more often. However, it is a great place to visit when we're in town!

Don't go here unless you like burnt espresso shots and MOLD!…read moreI don't like leaving bad reviews but felt this one was necessary. While visiting family in Canandaigua I stopped by for a coffee and a young man named Sam was working. I ordered an iced latte and, unfortunately, when I received my drink the espresso shots were burnt and I could not enjoy it. I had to throw it away. I thought I'd give them a second chance another day when I stopped by and ordered an Iced Tea. I figured they couldn't mess that one up! Again, the same guy, Sam was working. I received my iced tea that was luke warm at best; not very refreshing on a hot day. As I took a few sips I noticed that it tasted "off" and when I opened the cup I found MOLD floating inside. I was Horrified and Disgusted!! The guy making my drink had to have noticed that there was mold in it when he was putting the lid on and still decided to serve it to me?! I threw that drink away also. Twice I wasted my money here! Upon returning home I saw my naturopath and he CONFIRMED that I had been exposed to MOLD; which we are still trying to remedy. You've been warned! Do not go here!!! They are amateurs! Save your money and go down the road to 7Brew or Starbucks, where at least their baristas are trained to know how not to burn espresso shots or sell Moldy Iced Tea! 2 star rating= 1 star per visit

Once we walked up to the counter, though, hospitality left much to be desired. I do not like giving bad reviews, and I understand that running a business is tough, but this was an eyebrow-raising experience. We were left standing at the counter for several minutes unacknowledged, despite the fact that there were two people behind the counter. No one even said "we'll be right with you." Once the woman behind the counter finally was able to help us, her entire demeanor said we were inconveniencing her. We ordered the chicken pesto panini, a bacon egg and cheese on a bagel, a blackberry lemonade refresher, and a turkey club. We did not receive a receipt and the girl walked away from the register before the transaction was even finished processing. We sat in the dining area and waited for twenty minutes. A member of our party went to politely check the status of our food since we had been waiting for some time for sandwiches. She was informed that the restaurant next door "got busy." Assumably they are sharing a kitchen? I'm not entirely sure what that meant. When we eventually received our order, the same girl who took our order brought our food. She brought out a box of napkins and silverware and threw them on the table. The food was nothing particularly special. The pesto chicken was so dry it was actually hard. The turkey club ended up just being a turkey sandwich with no bacon. The blackberry lemonade refresher tasted like sour mix. I was very disappointed in this place that I was hoping to really like. I will not go back and I will not recommend it to anyone. If a business would like to acquire patronage and keep people returning, the staff might want to treat customers like they actually want them there in the first place.
