Filson stuff can be very expensive, and one does not always get the feeling that something like a $38 t shirt or $55 baseball cap is as laden with value as some of their other products. Today I thought I was just looking -- buy myself an indefensible ball cap - and I ended up buying a new rolling suitcase. Matteo answered all of my questions (like all the staff at the Portland Filson, he is extremely knowledgeable and a genuine help), and we settled on the super-lightweight nylon roller. Weighs half what my Tumi does(10+ pounds to around 6.5) and holds an extra 6 liters (30 to 36 L)! But friends, I am not a wealthy man. However, the item ended up costing only $265 after email signup discount. I say "only" because the price allowed me to give the Tumi to a family member, and get a super lightweight full size carry on. I mention the bag's weight so often because I suffer from a chronic neurological disorder, which means I'm often extremely physically weak and have to rely on nice people to schlep my stuff. He's an avid wood tuner and his work shop (the garage) gets mighty cold during winter. His latest love is the Duluth Fire Hose Fleece-lined Relaxed fit pants. The pants have a microfleece lining that is very warm yet surprisingly lightweight and the large, deep cargo pockets resist punctures from the tools he uses. The 100% cotton canvas repels stains and water as well. One note: they wash extremely well but are very heavy when wet and a wimp like me has to transfer them from the washer to the dryer. No complaints, just a warning. LOL His other current favorite are the flannel shirts. There's a whole collection of them ranging from relaxed fit to untucked to fleece-lined and they are all on sale right this very minute. The brick and mortar store has deals you can't get online and vise versa so it's always a good idea to check both options. Many have concerns about the area where the store is located. And, yes, there have been high crime issues associated with the Jantzen Beach shopping center and many of the stores surrounding Duluth Trading Company are in fact closing. Homelessness is rampant in this part of town but the store is safe to shop in and I would suggest just being more vigilant about your surroundings. It's the times we live in.

It's very much the museum vibe inside this store. Lots of space to wonder and camp gear displays spread out across 2 floor levels. Employees were super helpful and shared some great knowledge. The price point is premium with tents priced at $1,000 and camping chairs and tables priced at $200. There's a ton of cool features and several items have a modular design like the outdoor grill and cooktop station. Each Snow Peak item is meticulously designed for function, style and durability. Table tops were made from bamboo and aluminum components. I was mesmerized at how chairs and tables folded up neatly. Snow peak is also launching a restaurant in the back called Tabiki? Hoping they offer yakitori and other Japanese cuisine. Also heard some award winning cocktails from local talent will be in the menu. Shopping and food? That's a winning combo.

On the other hand, Beckel Canvas is solid old school. Its canvas products range from Wall tents to sturdy field bags to accessories for enjoying the great outdoors. You can't get a better practical canvas bag for the money. And to quote the Manager at a "hip" Portland products store that I recently visited: "Kathy (2nd Generation Beckel) is a real sweetheart". I first ordered a bag (via snail mail) and was super impressed by it's sturdiness, good looks, and practicality. I then made it a point to stop in at their Clinton Street "Outpost" during a recent visit to Portland. This is a working shop, with little need for showroom aesthetics and plenty of emphasis on sewing up lots of cool stuff. One small disappointment was Kathy's learned determination that my beloved Land's End canvas briefcase (purchased in 1987 and used continuously ever since) was now beyond repair. I had high hopes, but sometimes even good canvas meets its maker. At the same time, I'm sure that if I'm still around in those same 26 years, that my Beckel bag will still be at my side and like me, going strong.
