Great service even two days before Christmas when the place was a madhouse. After a long day of shopping and long lines we were pleasantly surprised with how fast the lines wen. In the past few years, the REI employees are disinterested, impolite, and make me feel like they would rather do something else than help a customer find an item. When you ask for technical help they make you feel like an idiot because you are not a gear head like they are. This is unfortunate because REI used to be a fun place to go. I love this place. The 'garage sale' at the end of the month is a great way to look for discounts. If you don't know what this is, check the website. Great out door adventure store! This is a great store for any out door adventure needs. I really like their shoe selection and they will do exchanges on most anything if the item does't work out as expected or if it breaks! I have bought shoes from them only to find out the shoes gave me blisters, but 2 weeks after my initial purchase they were glad to exchange them for a different shoe. read more

If you are looking for help in the bike department, ask for Lisa. I have seldom had a salesperson as calm, as knowledgable, and as nice as Lisa. REI is lucky to have her. I had worked with several other sales people at this store during my search for a new bike...no one else came close to her ability to listen and act. This store sucks, except for beginners to the outdoors. They have some of the stupidest people ordering their gear, but that really isn't REI abq's fault, corporate just ships what they think Abq needs. Really wish we had some local stores around, REI has put them all out of business. Get this, according the gear guys at REI, the climbing season is in the summer in New Mexico. REI used to carry just about everything an outdoor enthusiast would need; it's why I became a member. I went in needing to buy cordage by length and was disappointed to learn they no longer stock it. I guess if they can't package it in whatever they think you need, they figure you don't need it. If they won't carry essentials alongside the fashion items, I'll find a business that will. I am a little surprised to see all the bad reviews. Every time I go into this REI I feel like the staff is extreanly attentive. I am always greeted at the door and always helped with whatever product I am buying. Most recently I have looked at ski jackets, backpacking items, bought a backpack and sleeping bag for my daughter all seperate trips and each time someone went way overboard to help me find just the right product or reviewed products with me even though they knew I was not ready to buy something. Very poor customer service, I won't be back. The employees are rude and arrogant. I stopped by with the intention of buying sandals and hiking boots. A visor caught my eye so I stopped by the women's clothing section first. I decided to purchase the visor so I had it in my hand as I walked around the clothes. I noticed a lady that kept looking at me and the visor in my hand. I went around the corner and she casually followed me. I looked at her more closely and she was an employee! So she was following me around but never asked if I needed help. Hmm, did she think I was going to steal something? I went over to the shoes and picked out 3 pairs of sandals I wanted to try on. I waited for the sales guy because he was helping someone else. I saw another employee working but he seemed to be busy doing something in the back. The salesman brought my sandals and set them on the bench and walked away to help others. I tried them on but needed different sizes. So I waited for the salesman to come back, he never did. I could see he was busy chatting it up with a guy. After 10 minutes I realized they weren't even talking about shoes. He looked over at me a couple times but never acknowledged me, in almost a "you're insignificant" arrogant manner. The guy in the back came out, looked around, then went back to the back. That was my cue to leave and get my shoes elsewhere. I went to check out for my visor. The lady apparently didn't know how you smile and seemed to want to be anywhere but at work. After paying she handed my visor and receipt to me. I asked for a bag and she just looked at me, with that same blank stare, then handed me a folded brown bag. I almost went to customer service right then to return the visor because I didn't want to give them any of my money but decided the hassle wasn't worth it. If you want unfriendly rude arrogant service then REI is your place to go. The receipt said, "You're friendly co-op." HA! What a joke. read more

Could (and do) spend hours in this store. The staff is always amazing and very knowledgeable. We went in looking for a new sleeping bag, pad and pillow for me and a new pack for my husband. The man who helped us, Steele, was unbelievable! He gave his suggestions, helped us try everything out, and never left our side once! We come here often, and this is how it always is.. Quality merchandise with quality people to help you out. Also, become a member! It is a ONE time $20 membership, and the dividend you acquire at the end of the year is always a nice treat! read more

Today was my first time in an REI. I was there to buy some Keen shoes that a couple of friends had recommended. I had read the reviews on Yelp about the less than stellar customer service in the shoe department, but I reserved the right to judge for myself. The department was quite busy. Two employees were helping customers and one employee was on the phone with a customer. My friend and I waited patiently until a very tall associate was free and I asked him to try on two pair of Keen shoes. After a few minutes in the back he returned with two boxes, handed them to me and walked off. One of the boxes contained a different shoe than I had asked for. The shoe I did request and tried on turned out to be too small, but that same employee was not at all interested in helping me, so when the guy on the phone finished his conversation, I asked him if he would please bring me the correct shoe. He obliged, but didn't stick around to see how they fit. I expect he needed to help other customers. I needed further assistance, so my friend went to find the third employee. I recognized his name from the Yelp reviews. It was Chuck. He was so very helpful. He told me all about the membership, the return policy, and a bit of history about how the company got started. I was quite impressed. What was even more impressive was the fact that Chuck was extremely respectful of me despite the fact that it's rather obvious that I'm not a very athletic person and am out of shape. A serious car accident and years later a horse accident have left me unable to do even some simple tasks let alone sports. Still, Chuck was kind and encouraging. As I read the reviews about the lack of customer service let me just say that I was IN customer service for many years and very attentive to my customers. I don't tolerate well the lack of the same. I'm afraid that I can't recall the names of the first two employees, but if and when I return to REI, I will definitely be looking for Chuck! Yelp may be a good sounding board, but as a seasoned letter writer, I have learned that you will get a lot farther if you send your comments to the corporate office, which I will be doing. read more

We stood around for awhile before a man came over to help us look for ski boots. He was nice, but he didn't really know much. The boots were uncomfortable and there was nothing he tried to do. Not a bad store, but more knowledgable workers would be nice. Check out sport systems. read more

This review is only for the bike repair shop part of REI. My freehub on my 1 year old roadbike was making squeel sounds when coasting. Google search came up with several YouTube videos on squeeling Mavic freehubs and what to do. All recommended Shimano brake mineral oil, one said a Mavic rep told him that's what to use. Called REI as they were the only LBS open at 8 pm, they didn't have this product, and said he would not recommend that oil, but didn't recommend (more like refused) anything else. Instead he said to bring it in so he could look at it. I like working on my bike and think I am more careful and through than a shop thats keeping track of the time being spent on a repair. With all the YouTube videos out, DIY if you have the time and tools. But we do needs special bike repair tools, or some hints or 'secrets' now and then. If REI has no inkling of helping the DIYer a little, why do they carry special bike repair tools? The guys making the videos have little to gain, vs. REI whom might get a customer for a big job by helping him do some little things. I completed the lube job on the freehub, it was really quite simple, using another oil (which I had on hand) recommended on in a Mavic freehub repair thread on a bike repair forum. read more

So I had a TERRIBLE experience with the bike repair shop in this REI. I get a call from this tech named Matt who tells me in a voicemail that there are all these things on my bike that need to be replaced. Well I call him back and he cops this attitude with me like it's an inconvenience to be on the phone explaining this to such a fool. I ask him why I need to replace my rear gearset and he says "whoa, I said you MIGHT need to replace it."...I might need to replace it? well you're the frigging expert here, Matt!! I didn't bring my bike into you guys because I know how to fix these things. He was such a rude prick I just hung up on him. I called back and asked for a manager. I spoke with someone named Emily. She sounded slightly concerned when I advised her that Matt was extremely rude to me but I didn't get an apology from her. Literally what she said was "Oh." ...She placed me on hold for several minutes and came back and said my bike was ready whenever I wanted to come pick it up. Again, no apology for my experience with Matt. I will not be doing business with this and maybe any REI again. I thought they cared about their customers but obviously not. I'll be going somewhere where my money is appreciated in the future. read more
