I purchased a membership last year for R.E I they gave me a thirty dollar gift card. I did not know that there was an expiration date on the gift card and I misunderstood when they explained to me. Anyway, I went in this afternoon to make a purchase.And the employee was kind enough to allow me to have a purchase discount in the same amount of the expired gift card. This store is always clean and has so much merchandise. In the very back of the store , there is a clearance rack , so be sure to check that out. After researching to find a walking shoe that wouldn't kill my toes and be comfortable, I went to Dick's on Coors. The shoe associate couldn't answer 1 of my questions, seems to know nothing about their products, and kept looking up on a handheld stock on shoes "I" asked about telling me every time they were out of my size, a woman's 9??! So I went back to REI because they've never let me down. "Abel" was freaking amazing. I ended up trying the "Alta Sand W Olympus 6", zero drop shoes. Tried them today on a shorter walk-6miles uphill. This review is for the bike shop, only. I had an older mountain bike that i wanted to breathe some new life into. I took my bike to the REI bike shop at 1550 Mercantile Ave, in Albuquerque. The store is located near the Costco on Renaissance Blvd. Their bike shop employees are very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about bikes. I gave the employees a basic idea of the upgrades that i was interested in. They gave me a preliminary estimate. There were a couple of hiccups with the bike upgrades, but they worked to fix the problem, and the issue was ultimately resolved it to my satisfaction. Overall, i am very happy with the service that i received. The price was maybe a little high, but REI is not a discount store, they are a specialized outdoor retailer. Moreover, what's most important for me is that they stood by their work, and i could rely on the REI name. Thank you! read more

Went to buy new shoes and they were not new. Upon close inspection at home, the shoes have clearly been worn outdoors previously. I'm considering wearing it for a year and then returning. They have a return policy where you can return for a year. To be clear, I know there is a separate section that sells returns. I purchased mine from the new section with the sales person grabbing my size from the back. The sales person was fantastic! Service with speed and a smile. read more

Stopped by to check out some reflective stuff for running. There's a lot of product stuffed in a small space. They have a nice selection of gear to cover most outdoor activities taking place in the region. Hiking, camping, biking and winter sports. I plan to get my bike in for any needed maintenance work done from sitting idle during the winter. Prices are above moderate approaching high end. Recently, I went to buy a pair of shoes. I finally found a pair I wanted to buy. Upon inspecting the shoes, I noticed that they were dirty and had been worn. Employees suggested that it was dirt from wearing it around the store. I also noticed that inside the shoe there was dog hair. REI has a policy, that allows customers to bring their dogs into the store. While I was there several dogs were walking around the shoe area. Dirty shoes is not what I went to buy. No one loves dogs more than me. But I don't want someone else's dog hair in my new shoes. I don't want to allow someone else's dog's hair in my shoes, then go to my clean closet, and possibly contaminate my dog with some disease from another dog. It's just plain nasty. There has to be some health code violation with this policy. Until REI changes their policy, I won't shop for shoes at REI ever again. read more

September 30 11 AM, five people at the register, a young woman with green hair, a young woman with purple hair glasses and a bubbly personality, a young man and then two older more seasoned employees. The young man is the only one working, at the middle register, and the two older more seasoned people took one look at me, the next person in line and then made the decision they had something else to do on the floor and so they just walked away. The green haired woman and the purple haired woman with glasses and the bubbly personality did not greet, acknowledge my existence, or offered any sort of customer service relations toward me at all. He straight up ignored the fact that I was standing next in line. They showed absolutely no care for me being a customer at all . The young man in the middle, was the only person out of the five that was actually working at the register, he was very efficient, incredibly kind, unlike the two young women whose appearance I would say is extremely unprofessional looking. Next, the clothing they have there has become extremely cheap, I bought a hat for $40, REI co-op, one size fits all, I didn't get through the front door before it broke. read more

My feet have flattened out and I explained this to the employee, he came out with three pair of boots to try and took his time with me to find a pair that I believe will work. Update August 2020: I took my bike back to REI today for annual service and some upgrades. When I called, they told me it would be a 2 week wait and that COVID-19 was slowing admissions to the store. But they told me to come in and they'd help me. When I arrived, I was very pleased with the bike service rep Sara (name tag) provided. She asked me questions to discover my needs, inspected the bike, made more inquiries and even provided advice and an estimate for when the work would be complete. She even had a great smile and made me feel glad to be there. I don't believe I've ever had a better customer service experience at REI. Thanks! REI had a great Memorial Day sale here of which I took part. It was new bike day! This is not always possible for me in a line store because I run between a XL and XXL frame. But as luck would have it, I found this beautiful new bike that had never been sat upon and it was listed $500 off retail. The Services Staff was awesomely helpful, arranged my "test ride", and delivered prompt responses to all my questions. I wanted a day to review it and came back to buy my new mountain bike the next day. I had it outfitted with new grippy, tubeless Maxxis tires. They even helped me get it all dialed-in before I left the store. Good team effort. Thanks guy read more

This was my first experience in a long time visiting the brick and mortar location and it was a disappointing one. You need to update your posted hours of operations... I took the time to drive to the store to purchase a mountain bike because it stated on one of there media accounts that they were open for business. This does not give the customer any consideration and leaves me with the lack of confidence if I were to need more involved services in the future. If you are an "outdoor" equipment shopper, you know what this store is. It is a dream of equipment for outdoor activity enthusiasts. They have most everything you could want, or can get it. They are in 25 - 30 states across the country. California has 25 stores. New Mexico has one - in Albuquerque. Top of the line. No junk stuff in here. Consequently, it isn't cheap. If you want cheap, go to Target or WalMart. When I get out of the river I want my kayak to still be in one piece . . . more to the point I want to be in one piece . . . even more to the point, I want to get out of the river. I don't want some flimsy piece of equipment that falls apart the first rock we hit. REI can't guarantee that won't happen, but you will start out with well made and tough equipment. Since this store is the only location in New Mexico, I wish it was back at the old location. Right down near Old Town. Now it is out on the north edge of town and not easy to find. Also, it seems kind of small. Most REI stores I've been in around the country just seem to be huge. This one isn't. But they always seem to have what we want, so I guess it is just better organized. The only problem we have ever had was when their computer system was down and we had gone in to buy a gift off a gift registry. Coudn't get into the registry . . so no sale. We were *s--t* out of luck and so was the recipient and so was the store. But, we'll be back . . it is the ONLY one in NM. No choice. read more

Good quality outdoor gear in a modern, clean, well organized environment. Things are pricey, however they do give you an anytime, no questions asked return policy. In other words you must be satisfied or your money back. No time limit. Staff are fairly friendly, but knowledge results will vary. My faithful hiking boots finally gave out, so I went in to find some new boots! I went on a holiday, but it wasn't too busy. Jen M helped me find the perfect pair. She was incredibly patient with my particular requests and really went above and beyond to find the right shoe for me, despite current inventory constraints. She also showed me a shoe-tying trick to help keep my ankle from shifting, which has always been a struggle for me. Beware of body shaming in the shoe department! I left feeling awful. I went to buy some trail shoes for my hiking here in New Mexico and was excited for my first pair of Altra's I had read reviews and these seemed perfect. I tried a few pairs and the older man helping me raved about them. When I asked him about the critique I had read that the bottoms wear out fast by some hikers he proceeded to comment "Well you aren't small so for most people it would be 500 miles but for you 400. " Why did he feel the need to say that Y'all im a thick woman and 5'7 who works out 5 days a week im not petite but super active. After a beautiful morning hike and this REI shoe salesman made me feel bad triggering all the stuff that comes up when one is body shamed. Now I should have just left the store and I almost did but I needed the shoes for my visit. Luckily the young man at the checkout was super kind and when I told him what happened almost crying at the register he looked appalled and sincerely apologized and told me that's not what the company stands for. I love me some REI. I'm all about a new pack, or shoes, or whatever outdoor gadget is going to make my time outside more enjoyable. I'm a sucker for anything on a karabiner... chap stick, water bottle, flashlight... if it has a clip I want it!!! REI is a bit pricy but the brand is reliable and things I buy generally last for years. This location is easy to get to and navigate. The customer service is hit or miss. Some of the staff are helpful, easy to talk to, and ready to explain the difference is gear and products. Others, not so much. My best advice is when you find someone you like working with, stick with them! Ask for them next time you go back. read more

For bicycle repair and maintenance, go somewhere else! REI has been one of my go-to places for decades. I have spent quite a few thousands of dollars there, and frequent the ABQ store and the REI website. However, the REI ABQ bike shop is not what it used to be, so I doubt that I will be going back there. When I brought the bike in to the REI ABQ bike shop, it had only one minor issue, but I thought "why not get it tuned and checked". Prior to this, I was riding the bike up and down mountains, no problem. The bike shop was good about calling/emailing me regarding other work that was "needed" but not noticed when I dropped it off. After REI bike shop staff recommended additional preventive maintenance (new rear gears cassette, new chain, truing) and being told that they had all parts and would do the work... Well, ~$140 later... I pick up the bike, try to ride it, and the chain is slipping on every gear - something that has never happened on that bike, ever. I called the Albuquerque REI bike shop and was told that I had to bring it back in for them to look at. After getting there, the bike mechanic who worked on my bike tells me that the problem is that the rear gears cassette needs replacing, and that he was sorry he didn't catch that earlier, since he finished my bike at the end of his shift and didn't have time to test ride it. Wow #1... REI gave my bike back without testing it. Wow #2... why didn't they put the rear cassette on when I approved that work and had the parts? So the mechanic looked around the shop, and looked online, then told me "we don't have any more 8-gear cassettes - you'll have to get one on Ebay or something". That's Wow #3, and no attempt to help any further was Wow #4. Having been a very frequent and courteous customer of REI for many years, this is not what I expect from them. Fortunately, I live just a few blocks from Two-Wheel Drive, which I have also used in the past. They looked at my bike and said "no problem, we'll have it ready for you in 4-5 days". Wow. So, I now have a new place for my bike repair/maintenance and purchases. Thanks REI! read more

This review is overdue. A few years ago I bought a pair of Oboz hiking shoes. It had been a while and I thought I had purchased them at Sportsman's Warehouse. I went there and a very helpful sales lady helped me research local outlets and we came up with REI. I thanked her and headed over to the REI store. I found the exact shoe and one of the sales guys helped me...fitted me precisely, found the perfect insert and explained how it fit my foot/arch. He had to trim it to the correct size and all said and done I walked away a happy camper...pun intended! Granted it was mid-week and not that busy in the shoe section so the sales person drifted in and out as he helped other customers but eventually gave me outstanding and expert service. He ended by saying that if for any reason I didn't like the shoe or the insert I should feel free to return them for a refund or replacement. I've read reviews that complained about the lack of service or no service in the shoe department. If you go on a weekend or during a store sale these folks do the best they can. They work very hard running back and forth hauling out multiple boxes of shoes...even for some ungrateful customers. In fact I've been there when they're swamped and I simply leave with the understanding that I'm not the only person on the planet...I come back later if I want to and if I don't.... Instant gratification, for some, seems to be considered a birthright. This isn't the first positive encounter I've had. I have returned a headlamp purchased a year and a half previously that went bad and REI replaced it no questions asked. I've returned a number of articles including special orders and was never made to feel like I was a bad person for doing so. Pricey...? Maybe a little more than some places but when I receive my dividends It makes it all seem less painful. I've been a member since they opened their first store off Mountain Road near Old Town. I have shirts, base layers, underwear, vests, a fanny pack, bike bag, etc. some bought over ten years ago and they still work! They are all still in service. Think of the deals you got a few years ago and ask yourself if they are still in serviceable order? You get what you pay for, IMO. read more

We kept asking him about specific brands and all he could say was that they were made in China. He probably should just be working in stock if he can't give any info about items in his department. It seems silly to review a big box store like REI, you already know what's inside before you step foot in any location. So, this is more of a review for Chuck than anything. Chuck was amazing. One of, if not the, most helpful sales associates I've ever had the pleasure of checking out with - in any store. He saved us a ton of money by highlighting the benefits of the lifetime REI membership - 10% off all purchases, special coupons via email and all kinds of member only sales throughout the year. Paying the $20 was a no-brainer. Another thing he mentioned that I didn't know was the year long warranty on all shoes. A year?! I'll be purchasing my running shoes here from now on (and with a members only coupon, no doubt) and will have the guarantee if they don't hold up as they should, my pocket won't suffer. This REI location is huge with all the standard fare. They had everything we were looking for except women's swim ware. Seriously REI, give Chuck a raise, the guy deserves it. He lives and breathes this place and is a model employee. He's convinced me and my husband to be members for life! read more

Most REI stores are more or less the same: big, open space, lots of fleece on the racks, and all manner of outdoor doohickeys for sale. This particular REI is no different. I don't like the parking lot of this REI, because it seems a little small. I drive an F-150 and this lot seems more designed for the Prius driver. Pro tip: REI will take stuff back NO QUESTIONS ASKED. I love this. I had a multi-tool snap a blade after a few months, and they just traded me out straight. Love that. Also, once my cats decided to climb my tent and it was the same story: REI swapped me a new tent no problems. read more

Amazing customer service! We bought new Burton snowboarding boots at REI, tried them the next day at Santa Fe, turned out they didn't fit well. We took them back the next day and exchanged them even though they were worn, no problem. REI goes the extra mile to ensure you're happy with your purchases, and their staff is very knowledgeable about the products they sell. It's an REI, same as all the others I've been too. Store is neat and well organized with a wide selection of high quality items, including more clothing than I've seen at other REI locations. Staff is friendly and generally very knowledgable and, maybe most important, not afraid to tell you if they don't know the answer to your question. (Plus they can usually guide you to someone who can.) They can also get you what you need if they don't currently have it, though you may have to wait for them to have it delivered to the store. For those not in the know, joining their "co-op" is a great investment, especially if you're the outdoorsy type (as most people who shop there are). For $20 you get a lifetime membership which entitles you to 10% back on most purchases. Easy math; spend $200 in your life and you've made your many back. Plus they regularly send out coupons and membership entitles you to take part in their scratch-and-dent sale which is a great (if crowded) way to get good stuff marked down. read more

Horrible customer service. Seems like a bunch of children run this place. When I went in to buy a bike around 4-6 months ago they told me they couldn't take cash and the only way they could take it was by loading the cash I had onto a giftcard which I reluctantly did and not long after I bought the bike from REI it had multiple issues, but the most annoying being that the chain would snap off every here and there so I went to return the bike like any normal person would do. Once I got there to return it I was told that the only way they could reimburse me was by giving me a giftcard because "that's what I used to purchase the bike" which made no sense to me because they were the ones who loaded my money onto the card in the first place. But after getting absolutely nowhere trying to fight my case I just accepted the gift card to call it a day and move on. Well turns out a couple months later, somehow, someway, someone used MY funds on MY giftcard in Pennsylvania, keep in mind I live in New Mexico and have never been to Pennsylvania, much less spoke to anyone from Pennsylvania so this was a complete shocker. I originally had $918.99 on the card and after the fraudulent transaction I had $596.54 left on it. Meaning that whoever used my giftcard in Pennsylvania basically stole $322.45 from me. And the only reason I know it was someone in Pennsylvania is because that's what the customer service team told me when I called around 2 months ago. Not long after that, I was told an investigation would be conducted but it never was and I only know that because I called today to check up on the "investigation" and a lady by the name of "Jen" on the same customer service line told me an investigation was never conducted. Meaning that they never even cared enough to look into it and basically told me there was nothing they could do to help me. So needless to say I took a big loss on this and I plan on never giving REI my business again and I would recommend for whoever is reading this review to do the same. read more
