Amazing customer service! We bought new Burton snowboarding boots at REI, tried them the next day at Santa Fe, turned out they didn't fit well. We took them back the next day and exchanged them even though they were worn, no problem. REI goes the extra mile to ensure you're happy with your purchases, and their staff is very knowledgeable about the products they sell. It's an REI, same as all the others I've been too. Store is neat and well organized with a wide selection of high quality items, including more clothing than I've seen at other REI locations. Staff is friendly and generally very knowledgable and, maybe most important, not afraid to tell you if they don't know the answer to your question. (Plus they can usually guide you to someone who can.) They can also get you what you need if they don't currently have it, though you may have to wait for them to have it delivered to the store. For those not in the know, joining their "co-op" is a great investment, especially if you're the outdoorsy type (as most people who shop there are). For $20 you get a lifetime membership which entitles you to 10% back on most purchases. Easy math; spend $200 in your life and you've made your many back. Plus they regularly send out coupons and membership entitles you to take part in their scratch-and-dent sale which is a great (if crowded) way to get good stuff marked down. read more

Went into REI to try on a pair of Brooks tennis shoes. The gentleman at the door was very nice and friendly. We went back to the shoe section and i quickly found the Brooks tennis shoes. I picked up the pair I liked best so I could try them on. We stood there while the salesman was talking to another customer. The only other customer over there at the time. The salesman looked back at me but never said a word. Then he walked to the back. A saleswoman came picked up to pairs of shoes sitting on a bench, looked at me then walked to the back. Again she said nothing to us. So I put the shoe back and left. Felt as though I wasn't good enough to wait on! Horrible customer service! read more

Since I haven't found a decent independent outdoor outfitter around this area, REI is pretty much the only game in town. Then again, most of their competition is online now, so it's a different kind of game these days. I don't know what the previous reviewer was talking about as far as hard-to-find goes...they're RIGHT off I-25 with a big 'ol sign that you can see for miles either direction. Their selection is decent--a little bit of everything although you might not always find the exact size you want. They can get it for you easy enough, though. The staff has always seemed friendly and helpful on my visits, although I'm more of a figger-it-out-on-my-own kind of shopper. When I have had questions, though, they've been knowledgeable enough. Overall, I shop there pretty regularly and definitely approve. Still, the most KILLER deals are to be found at the regular (quarterly?) scratch-and-dent sales that they hold out in the parking lot. We made it to the last one on New Years to wait in the line that stretched allll the way around the parking lot. I got a couple of pairs of good hiking shoes for $75, though, so I figger it was worth the hassle. Kinda fun, too. It's alll good. read more

Unlike the majority of retail stores, REI does not honor coupons (that they give you for spending hundreds of dollars) if they are expired. I wanted to use a coupon that I received less than a month ago and it was already expired! With that being said, I'm going to return my items and just purchase them through another local retailer. I know for sure Sportsman's Warehouse right next to REI honors all coupons, expired or not! They actually value their customers. read more

Would be 5 stars for equipment available in store and on line, but it is expensive. I have spent way too much money in this place. I primarily do so because of the quality and the (previously) unconditional guarantee. Unfortunately the guarantee is only for 1 year now and you get a raised eyebrow of suspicion a little more often now. Now, the store. Has what you need or can get it very quickly. If you like to order on line, this is a good place to get your hands on the item, check it out, size it up and then order on line or through the app. Associates are very helpful and most are quite knowledgeable. My experience is, contrary to "Wild," they don't try to sell you what you don't need. Best advice: if you can put off getting everything at once, there are about 4-5 decent sales/coupons a year for 20-30% off an item. Wait for each one to buy your big ticket gear. read more

Review for the Member's Garage Sale: The garage sale was the line up and then open it up to everyone at once kind. Held in the back parking lot behind the store. I overslept and arrived a few minutes after they opened up the space: maybe 150 people milling around and almost everything grabbed. Very little clothes put out. Lots of sports shoes of all sizes. Some tents, backpacks, sleeping pads, sleeping bags, bikes, and other gear. Prices overall OK, although seemed high on some of the clothing and backpacks. I hung around and waited for the first wave of people putting items back: found the sleeping bag I was looking for ($100, like new, down from $400 new,) went inside, waiting in the fast moving line, and was done less than an hour from when I arrived. read more

There's an REI in Santa Fe, but the parking sucks, and if you park in the wrong place, you'll get ticketed and/or towed. Easiest thing to do is park at the mall nearby, walk in, then out of the mall at another door and walk the 1/4 mile to the REI. I had a pair of Merril Ventilator boots I'd worn for about a month, less than 50 miles of hiking, and the soles started coming apart. They took them back no questions asked, no prob, no receipt, and I got another pair which are still going strong, plus I used about $20 of my membership discount rebate to buy them. Save money and buy online at their REI Outlet link for discontinued items for up to 80% off and have it shipped to the store for free. Years ago I bought a $200 backpack for $50., new, not scratch and dent. read more

My experience tonight was yet another that only typifies what I have come to expect from REI: Terrible customer service. I went in shopping for shoes. Upon entering the shoe department I was relieved to see that I was to be the only customer in the department and would not need to compete with other shoppers for the attention of REI staff. I was also happy to see two REI staff in the shoe department. However they were engaged in gossip and did not even acknowledge me. After about 5 minutes their gossip ended - and both walked away in different directions and left the department, still without even acknowledging me. I waited another 5 minutes for someone to return but that was not to happen. So I left the store. Over the years I have given REI many visits only to regularly be treated this way. No more. Never again will I set foot in this store. Contrast this experience tonight that is typical of REI with another sporting goods store I had visited earlier in the evening: The other store's shoe department (and the entire store) was quite busy, however the staff was still extremely helpful to me and to other people who were shopping for shoes. The clerk sincerely wanted to help and was very knowledgeable about the product. REI you have failed me yet again and for the last time. read more

I just purchased a pair snowboard boots online and wanted to get them molded. I called the store to see how much they charged and the guy named David was very friendly and said it's free and it will just take twenty minutes of my time. I went in today and the gentleman at the boot section was very rude and unhelpful. He said I can mold them myself or he can do it for $30. He asked if I was an REI member and after I told him no, he said "wow, not even a member" and walked away. I've always been a huge fan of REI but this rude and unhelpful employee will steer me away from future purchases. read more

I generally really like this store and the people who work there. This is a review for the company as a whole: I have been a member for 25 years. It used to be a 5 star company but recently I have had issues with the wrong things being delivered. In the most recent case I ordered a down winter jacket for an upcoming trip to the grand canyon. They sent a version of what I ordered in the wrong size and style instead. Should have checked it at the store but I had previously trusted REI. When I talked to someone there he seemed pretty unsurprised and and blamed "robots" and "cyber Monday". As it turns out, after being sent the wrong jacket , the actual jacket that I ordered is now no longer available. There is really no replacement in this price range or specs and no time to try and find another before a cold wintertime trip to the Grand Canyon. Hoping REI gets it together and starts being the company I used to know and love. read more

It's been quite a few years since I bought running shoes and was not looking forward to it, but Wayne at REI made it a fantastic experience. Wayne promptly came over to assist us as soon as I walked into the shoe section, asked lots of questions to figure out what shoes would work best for me and was very attentive while also assisting other customers simultaneously. I was at the store this last week looking at bikes. This saleswoman came to me and said she would have a greater selection later. While looking at one bike I said pricey. She then stated that I could go to walmart and get a cheap bike their but that it would not last. The whole attitude was condescending. Like for some reason she assumed I did not know anything about bikes. I started to ask her about hybrid bikes and gave her a price range but, only to let her know I have knowledge. I was extremely uncomfortable and ended up buying only glove inserts. She took me to the most expensive kind. I also asked about about shoe covers and took me to them even after I told her I was riding in light hikers. All in all it was the attitude I do not know why she saw me as not worth the ? or why I had to ask her for help instead of being professional.and coming to especially because she was only stocking shelves.Sales people often do not realize how important it is to say I" will be with you in a minute". I love REI, don't get me wrong. I just wish that they had more clothes and shoes that work for my outdoor lifestyle. Most of what they sell works just fine for the casual to intermediate hiker and outdoor enthusiast, but get serious about these pursuits and it's difficult to find clothing and shoes that will stand up to rugged abuse. As far as REI stores go, this one is on the small side and has a correspondingly small selection. The store itself is clean and well lit, the employees (most of them anyway) are familiar with the items in the store and are happy to talk to you about them and answer questions. Bought a compact bicycle pump, less than $30. Ten days later realized it only fit a special kind (Presta) of valve stem. It never occurred to me that a pump would be made that didn't fit both kinds of valve stems. Didn't have receipt but took it back anyway; seems like most stores these days don't make a big fuss over receipts. The item was unopened, not disturbed in any way. I selected another more expensive pump but they wouldn't offer refund--said only members get refund without receipt. It isn't like I had a truck full of bike pumps and was going from REI to REI trying to con them into a refund so I could buy a different pump. If REI culture is so rigid and, I think, inconsiderate there are other places to buy what they sell. read more

Great customer service! alway something sweet in the sale racks. scratch and dent sales almost every month (you must must arrive at least an hour before it starts because its cleared out in 20 minutes of the doors opening). I can't complain enough about this store. I am so very sick of shopping or calling to see if an item is in stock only to get into a "discussion" over what the item actually is and why do I want it (Hello! I'm looking for a tailgate shuttle pad not a truck bike rack. Learn the equipment and stop arguing with me, jerk!). The attitude of "we know better than you" is outrageous. REI used to be mellow, now it is obnoxious and expensive! What happened to REI brand gear being a good value? If I really want to experience this kind of elitism I'd prefer to drive to the Santa Fe store, sit on a bench watching the front door and read a copy of Outside magazine. The floor staff never approached us or checked on us which was a little disappointing. We weren't even greeted as we walked in. I worked for the store in Anchorage, Alaska years ago and they always emphasized creating a welcoming environment. The layout was very nice and everything was easy to find. Luckily the cashiers made up for the sales staff. They were extremely friendly and chatted with us for a bit. They still remembered some staff members that transferred to the Anchorage store years ago and asked about them. I learned a bit about them and even discovered one of the cashiers is from Alaska! Had a wonderful experience at REI Albuquerque. Driving cross-country our bike rack (BR) broke. Brent and Pablo leapt into action, took the measurements of our vehicle, found a new BR in stock that would fit our vehicle (only one model would work), assembled the new BR (for free, we had no tools with us), removed the old BR (and hauled it way), installed the new BR (again no charge), helped us extricate the second bike (packed inside our SUV intertwined with all our luggage), mount the bikes, and wish us Godspeed. read more

REI in general has moved from what made it such a great place 40 years ago when I first became a member, to what it is now, a high end outdoor clothing store with some camping/skiing equipment. I am a telemarker, and the Albuquerque store doesn't carry tele equipment anymore, so I took my business to Backcountry.com. Then I went to REI to get them mounted, they were so helpful, they helped me fit my boots and didn't charge me the $15 (hope I don't get anyone in trouble!). Afterwards, I felt so guilty for not buying my stuff there. In the future, I will, but it would still be nice to see them stock some "hard to find" stuff, since that used to be their go to. All in all, great staff! So helpful. read more

My experience with REI is that they have quality items that are necessary for life's adventures i.e. skiing, camping, hiking, etc. So, if You're into that kind of thing, this store will quickly become one of Your favorite places to hang out! I jokingly say that REI stands for Real.Expensive.Items but to get quality gear, it will cost You, as it is an investment. There are always online options, but sometimes You just need to try things on i.e. daypacks, flashbacks, etc. My only warning is that if You are the adventurous type, it's almost impossible to walk out with just one item... :) read more

I went in to buy some Vasque boots before the end of the year. I had the girl size my feet 11.5 Narrow. She then informed me that they do not carry narrow widths and that ordering them would take 3-4 weeks and it would be a big hassle for me. She did not want to order for me due to the wait time and proceeded to talk me out of buying them. She then proceeded to have me try on the 11's not even my size and guess what they were to small. She was in a hurry to do something else besides help me with any boots. I then left, I will not be back and I will order my boots from someone else willing to place the order and not talk me out of their business. read more
