The Register Guard's website advertises a digital subscription for 6 months for $1. There was a specific article I wanted to read and reasoned that a newspaper costs more than $1 now, so the 6 month subscription was worth it to read the article. When I got to the end of the process to sign up for the subscription (after entering payment information) a thank you message popped up and showed that I was being billed for a one-year subscription for $39. It's a bait and switch scam. It was a weekend, so there was no way to address it with them since they don't allow cancellations via your online account and there is nobody to contact on the weekend. There was immediately a pending charge for $39 on my bank account, though. I called Monday morning and spoke with someone about it. I was told that the subscription was cancelled and that I had been refunded. The pending charge was not stopped and went through the next morning. So, I waisted my time calling them yet again because they wouldn't address anything via email. The associate that answered this time stated that a refund was in process and would take 6-7 business days to process. It took less than 48 hours to overcharge me by $38, but it will take a week to refund it? The Register Guard used to be a local paper that was respected by locals. Now it's owned by Gannett, a huge news organization and it really shows. Their call center is clearly not local and the local stories and local sports articles are rarely up-to-date. It's truly not worth subscribing and the organization is most definitely not trustworthy. It's a sad state of affairs and they won't be getting my business after this most recent scam. read more

We have been subscribers to this newspaper for 35 years and the present condition of this newspaper is ridiculous. Frequent editing errors as well as thinner and more sparse coverage of EVERYTHING! In addition, instead of getting a local live person to speak with about my subscription, I am usually on hold for someone who may or may not have complete comprehension of my English, which makes communication difficult. Their most recent debacles have been when I have requested vacation holds. Three times I requested holds online and three times, my paper continued to be delivered. After the second time, I reported it ( calling a 1-800 number in the sky and on hold for a minimum of 20 minutes). Yet, it happened a third time. The main reason one puts a hold on delivery is so that accumulated newspapers are not evident for the cruising burglar. So, three times this has happened and today's call, another 20 minute hold, ended with the individual telling me her manager told her s/he was unable to notify the carrier. Really? And that's supposed to make me happy? When I requested a callback from said manager, I was told personal information was not given to callers. Well, that took a while to explain that I wasn't wanting the manager's info, just to have him or her call me back. I ultimately threatened to cancel my subscription unless I received a personal call back from the manager because I was definitely not satisfied with the initial message she relayed from her/him to me. And also, I have a problem with the digital online newspaper. Sometimes I can read it just fine and then other times it tells me I have had my 5 free reads and will need to subscribe. And many times when I try to log in to my account with them, it tells me I am not a recognized customer as indicated by my address and phone number! Ridiculous! I have reported this problem also and end up going through shenanigans to try to fix things, and it's always temporary!!! I really think it's time to cancel, don't you? read more

I have made many complaints about wet papers and ripped papers! For the first 40 years of our subscription it was placed carefully on my door mat! Now that we are nearly 80 with mobility issues, it can be found in the street, 40 feet away on the sidewalk or behind our fence in the grass! I take exception to being billed once a week. I have written on every bill I pay that I do not want to be billed like this. Also, I do not enjoy having to call every time I get a bill to see what I owe. Last bill, I called to find that I have a credit, and now today I get a call that says I am behind. I feel for people older than myself that would pay the bill every time they get one, with no accounting for the actual bill. Since the Register Guard has been bought out by a large newspaper the quality and service has deteriorated rapidly. Stories are rarely local or timely, and delivery is sporadic and unreliable. Even when I call to report a missing paper they are infrequently able to deliver a replacement and I end up going to the corner market to buy one at full price. I've been a delivery subscriber for 35 years and I'm ready to drop it completely. No wonder print is dying! read more

Have been a loyal customer for decades. Since it was sold by the Bakers to a national organization it is no longer our hometown paper. very few local stories printed. The sports coverage recently for our local Thurston vs. Silverton state championship game took 3 days to be printed. Now, the last straw, the Ducks played in the Alamo Bowl Wednesday evening and as of today, Friday, no print coverage. I'm done. I will look elsewhere for news. Terrible newspaper! read more

Multiple calls for missed papers, papers thrown in the street, neighbors yards, in the landscaping where it's soaking wet by the time I get it in the morning, not delivered, etc. I was told because of my age, 80, there are exceptions to placement, it would be placed on my front porch...that only happened for awhile. Been a subscriber since 1987, and prior to it's sale to a national media company a few years back the RG was a very good newspaper with tons of local news; city, county and State. Now almost nothing. In 20-24 pages of newspaper there are 2-4 mostly skimpy local news articles. This means our paper no longer serves our community as a valued and trusted source for local information. I'm sure the Baker family, the long time ex-owners, are rolling their eyes and gritting their teeth while kicking back in one of their mansions. Bottom line, I'm canceling my subscription. I guess I'll have to get local news from TV station websites. Too bad that we are forced into this place - the web is rife with misinformation, hatred and fear as we have seen - especially during this election cycle. Home subscription delivery is spotty in Cottage Grove. The paper has been getting thinner over the years and letters to the editor have all but disappeared. Local sports news that happens before noon does not appear until at least two days after. Finally, the Saturday print edition has disappeared as well as the day after Christmas and after New Year's Day. (!) Very disappointed! read more

The Register-Guard is basically Eugene's version of the Oregonian: a comprehensive newspaper that has stories ranging from local to state to international headlines. The paper is thick and the Sunday version is so stacked that I feel sorry for all of the trees that had to die to make its several thousand person circulation. Generally, the stories are well written and the content of the paper is well organized. In most cases, it's just a regular newspaper, but one that has an extensive in depth coverage of stories that most of the local papers don't publish (or have the resources to cover). The website has undergone some remarkable changes to where its no longer a clump of news headlines all over the place but rather a segmented, easy to navigate site full of resourceful information. For the sake of the environment, I say read the web version before having to resort to the print version. The students of Eugene can stick to the Daily Emerald while adults will remain with the Register Guard. read more

I have been a long time subscriber to the Register Guard, but cancelled my subscription today. I got an e mail a few weeks back saying that there would be no Friday or Saturday delivery this week and next because of the holidays, but the Friday and Saturday edition would be combined, and delivered on Thursday. Well, I didn't receive a paper today. (I am a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday subscriber, and it is paid in advance). So I contacted my carrier, and he said I wasn't on the list to get a paper today, and advised me to call the RG. So, I called the newspaper and got someone I could barely understand, and I was trying to explain my situation, but she just kept talking, saying things like everyone that gets the paper all week will get a special edition today. But if you get Friday, Sat. and Sun., all we can do is credit you. I told her I didn't want a credit, but wanted to read my paper. She still wouldn't quit trying to talk, so I asked for a supervisor. After being placed on hold twice, I was told that the supervisor wasn't getting on the phone, and they would credit me. By this time, I was fed up. I have faithfully subscribed for 15 years, and asked the customer service representative to cancel my subscription. I will be contacting the Register Guard for a refund of the rest of my subscription, and letting them know how I feel about their "customer service". It seems like unless you get the paper everyday, you are not important. Thank you for listening. read more

Waiting on hold for the advertising department to submit an obituary per their website instructions. All I get while waiting are marketing-on-hold promotions for the paper and assurances that my call is important. Obituaries are expensive and for the RG to force me to wait to spend money is a bad staffing decision on the part of management. I subscribed last year and told them not to automatically renew. My subscription ended and they hadn't renewed or sent a notice, so I signed up at their current special for 52 weeks at $52. Instead they put through a renewal AND the new subscription! I called them, they canceled the 52 week one instead of the renewal (they said they couldn't tell how much it was going through for). I found $4 charge pending on my Mastercard so called to ask them what that was for. They said $4/week. What?! I told them I didn't authorize them to charge me at a rate four times as much, to cancel the whole thing, including my Mastercard charge. They canceled my account but went ahead and put the $4 charge through! Now I'm having to dispute it with my bank. I'll get my news elsewhere, not worth the hassle! read more

I've moved to Eugene recently and just received an email for three month price special. At the subscription website, I typed in all my information SIX times, using different credit cards, rechecking all info, and every time it said my subscription cannot be fulfilled. Ever since being taken over by Gannett/USA Today, the journalistic quality of the newspaper has done a nose dive. Never mind the complete lack of the wonderful extra sections on various topics like gardening, events, local entertainment, etc. And the typos are sometimes pretty funny, and were a feature of the previous publication, too. No what I object to is the totally amateurish reporting and/or editing, which today culminated in an article about a coming solar eclipse that happened---yesterday! To be fair, it wasn't visible here in Eugene, but seriously? That was the last straw, I am tired of articles about events that don't contain dates, locations, times. What happened to putting the who-what-when-where-how in the 1st paragraph of a news story? Articles are sometimes so chopped up that you can't tell who is being quoted, or even what they are talking about. Honestly, if it weren't for some of the comics, I think I'd cancel my subscription. I expected the newspaper to go downhill after Gannett gobbled it up, but this is the worst I'd imagined & I it's still declining. Oh but the Sports section is still there! Since being sold to USA Today, quality and customer service has dropped. Forget about talking to a human if there are issues - you can't. You get stuck in a phone tree. Used to be we would see local college football news the day after the game. Now? Try Monday or Tuesday. Local news? Very little, mostly regurgitated news from USA Today. I still only subscribe for my 85 year old mom, but for me it's a waste of money to get this paper. read more

Most of these small-town newspapers are put together in another state with very little allowance for local news - especially late breaking news that you read days later. Pretty sad. In the past this newspaper was one of the best small-town newspapers in the country every year! read more

This is a throwback old school small town family owned newspaper. Most of the time this is good, other times not so much. Living in Eugene this is what you read for local news but things are slow in this part of the valley. Expect a lot of local fluff and plenty of Ducks chit chat to fill up the pages. I love my Ducks so I don't mind but others might think the U of O coverage as a little over done. The Oregonian doesn't cover much down in the valley (much less deliver papers anymore) so the RG is pretty much the only local source for real day to day journalism. The website is above average for conveying print stories online and I like to check it first before picking up a paper. Also the website is convenient for keeping up with Eugene when out of town. read more

I have been reading the R-G for many years and it has been a good source of balanced articles, especially for a city as opinionated as Eugene. It provides a very good source of information on local issues covering stories all over Lane County along with the standard state, national, and international coverage of any news paper. The paper has provided exceptional coverage of local businesses during this economic period (although I may feel this way since this is the main section that I read). While the business section seems well covered the rest of the paper has been lacking over the last year. Articles are starting to feel thin on content and depth. I understand that a number (unsure how many) of writers for the R-G have been laid off over this time and I am starting to notice an impact on the content of the paper. I am also very impressed with the website for the R-G. It is very easy to navigate and easy on the eyes compared to most local news websites (I am looking at you KMTR, KEZI, KVAL). While the guard does have good coverage in some sections, it is not complete across all of the sections. I do hope the R-G brings back some of the depth in stories that it has lost of this last year. read more

I ordered Sunday delivery service for the coupons in early October of 2017. Service was spotty. I sleep in on weekends so too late to call. I'm busy during the week. I got a call from sales in January and the girl said...huh it looks like you haven't received the paper since November. I told her I'm a busy person and regret i subscribed because delivery randomly stopped the previous time i subscribed. I called and left a message to have it cancelled. Noticed in February it wasn't cancelled and left another message. In March I left a message for a cancellation and refund. I got a call back from a nice lady who said she would submit it. Then i get a call back from a rude regional lady who said i wouldn't get a refund because SHE never received a message. Where is it that they post this lady's contact info to ensure you will receive a refund if things go south? She then tried to be nice and said she would like to resolve this and was sure she could work with the delivery person. I told her this is my second time around and I don't care how i get it. I'm not picky. Fling it. Leave it in a puddle. Just give me what i paid for but twice now they have shown they can't do that so no thank you... please refund and cancel. She said she doesn't have anything that verifies i wasn't getting deliveries. I told her the sales department seems to have that info and then it went round and round. She said again "well I never got a message". 15 minute call. No refund. $84 for six months and maybe 4-6 weeks of Sunday paper delivery. Good luck to those that use them! read more

A 2 week free subscription does not come "free" I had to call several times the first week. My paper was being delivered to the neighbors house, call call call I was then offered another free subscription by the "department manager. Hmmm 14 days from the start NO paper. So much for my extra week for being inconvenienced. I suggest you get the paper delivered only if you want to start your day stressed out over a paper being delivered. Oh and when you call be prepared to get your paper by 1230pm wow so much for my morning paper with my coffee. read more

The Register-Guard has BY FAR the worst copy editing of any daily newspaper I have read ... and I've lived in a number of other media markets. Not a day goes by that I don't find numerous spelling, punctuation or grammar errors that disrupt my reading experience sometimes to the point of head-scratching frustration. I have written to the editor on a couple of occasions and never received a response. I guess when you're the only paper in town you can afford to display this kind of arrogance and disdain for your readers. I suspect the copy chief who's in charge of the copy editors is either a Baker family member or is involved in some way with one of the Bakers ... hmm. Otherwise, there is no other possible reason I can think of for such poor performance and such a cavalier disregard for the readership. read more

A paper I have read for a quarter century, now just waiting for my yearly subscription to run out. Service is horrible. I'm told that my deliveryman was given two routes, so he is unable to deliver before the deadline. It is after 7 AM, Sunday, been told he will be late again. Yesterday he got here by 7:03. I am told that is how it will be, too bad. Before him I had the paper by 4:30, and could read it before I had to start work. Now, it is a really bad evening paper with old news. The driver contaminates the road with the extreme oil leak that seems to use as much oil as gas, a drop every ten feet or so, the rusty old van should have been retired long ago. The paper promises to deliver by 6;30 or 7, weekends or weekdays, then tells me why it will not happen. It has told me how I should be proud that less trees are cut after downsizing the paper repeatedly. I am looking forward to the end of my subscription so that I might help save even more. E edition, please are you kidding me?My main gripe is you never know when or where your paper will be. Tired of having to walk all around to see if i can even find it. Awful delivery service. Delivered to my house only 25% of days they were supposed to, despite continuing to charge my account and me reporting each time to customer service. Also failed to extend my subscription (to make up for missed days) as they said they would. Unless you want to pick up the RG yourself every day/weekend, save your time and money. Dealing with the RG has been a huge hassle and apparently waste of money. read more
