Pathetic foot massage. I had to keep telling technician that she missed a spot when doing my manicure. I won't go back

I visited this nail shop for the second time ever yesterday. My daughter lives in Champaign and the…read morelast time we came was in February of this year to get pedicures for her birthday. We both thought they did a great job and our pedicures lasted a long time. Unfortunately when I came by myself yesterday, I had a very different experience. I called ahead to reserve an appointment at 4pm just to be safe. The gentleman who worked there answered my call and just agreed to my appointment time and was about to hang up, I said don't you want my name? He said what's your name? I told him, and he said ok see you at 4. When I arrived at the nail shop the man who answered the phone was at the first nail desk closest to the door working on a customer. There were two other women nail techs working on customers who just looked at me as I walked in. No greeting. The man didn't look up and said "can I help you?" I responded saying I have a 4pm pedicure appointment. He said "ok pick your color" never looking at me once. I picked my color and took a seat. I did not wait long before one of the ladies came to get me. I do not have much to comment on related to her pedicure on my feet. She didn't ask me if I wanted my toenails cut which usually is common practice, but other than that, the pedicure was pretty standard. She made some errors with paint on my skin but cleaned it up and the finished product is fine. She made no conversation whatsoever, though I cannot confirm or deny whether or not that was due to her limited English because I only heard her speak another language. The disturbing part of this visit was the conversation between a white woman and one of the nail techs right next to me. That nail tech was definitely trying to keep up conversation with the white woman and at at one point the white woman mentioned that she didn't realize she had this coming Thursday off. (Due to Juneteenth) The nail tech, who is an Asian woman, asked what's the holiday, the white woman fumbled for an answer and ultimately googled to find out what the holiday was and what it represented. The Asian woman asked "are you getting paid for the holiday?" The white woman said yes. And the nail tech responded "well as long as you're getting paid who cares that's great enjoy yourself!" As a Black woman who is literally sitting in the chair right next to them as they had this conversation- and NO ONE had the self awareness to recognize how deeply offensive that exchange was!! #1 for both of these women, one of whom is of a marginalized identity, to be oblivious to WHAT Juneteenth is, is disgraceful. #2 after they both "learned" that the holiday was about the eradication of the enslavement of Black people, and then to say "who cares as long as you're getting paid" is the most disrespectful and disgusting thing a fellow woman of color could possibly say. And to say it in front of a Black woman. Her deep need for white acceptance made her oblivious to how terribly ignorant she looks. I hope she reads this review and I hope she understands she has betrayed herself and her sister in this world. I do not recommend this business to anyone, but especially not for any people of color as they clearly have no respect or desire for our patronage. There are plenty of other options and I hope this business reaps the karma it is sowing.

I have been here before and they did a good job but with the disrespect, I do not plan on going back. I do not understand why they can not do stripes, and if they can't, there was no need to laugh in my face.

I personally have been here before and I have run into the issue of being told I can come in and I…read morehave had to wait. Today, I called at noon to make an appointment for my mother, my sister and myself.. I was told that we could come in and someone was available for all three of us to get our nails done and a pedicure. As I pulled in I saw that someone was sitting in a chair waiting already.. being someone that gets their Nails done every 2 - 3 weeks religiously, I knew that they were not going to be able to fit us in.. I walked in, asked about the appointment I called about and no one knew anything and said it would be a long wait. For someone coming from out of town and going to a place that they have been to before, you would think that the establishment could answer the phone and be honest. I told the young man (yes young man if you are seeing this because I know I am older than you sir) be honest with me, it's going to take time correct? He said yes, I will be honest it will be a wait... Me: "That's fine, understand.. we're leaving but when someone calls and asks if you're available, be honest. You just waisted my time and fucked up my plans for the day. I've never given a review this low and I'll never recommend this establishment to anyone again. I'll tell them to go to Angel nails in Walmart before I tell them to go here for terrible service from a company that would rather have people sitting and waiting than to be honest. Yes I am mad because I do not play about my time or money and I could have gotten my nails done somewhere else if YOU MAGIC NAILS was not going to be professional enough to write stuff down!

So, I needed a haircut as I was a god damned hippy. After several months, I finally decided to get…read morethe top cut off. I had been having Jen widen it as it was too narrow before, and now it's all one length, which is nice. Got in, got cut, got out. Went to the house to go shower and get all the little hairs off, and for the first time in months, put some product in my hair. So, I needed to stop and get some smokes for outside things, and I stop at the gas station right across the street. The girls working say something to the effect of "I love your hair, my son would love to have a cut like that". So, I reply "thanks, I just got it cut", and they are like "ohhh, fresh!" and I say, "yep, right across the street" and point to your place. Then they discuss wanting to go watch duck dynasty... for some reason.

I'm the sort of person that typically goes to a discount chain hair salon for his haircut: Borics,…read moreSupercuts, cost cutters, etc. I decided to give this local shop a try this time, and I'm not disappointed. The stylists that own and operate this place used to work at the Boric's in Urbana (next to the county market), and they are pretty good at what they do. I was surprised to see them in this place, since I knew they are both good at what they do. The difference, of course, is that here they don't have to pay the franchise fee, which could be as high as 60%! The result was that my stylist (Jenny, which I highly recommend her work) took her time and paid lots of attention to what she was doing to my hair, while I always felt rushed when going to Borics, super cuts, etc. with lots of machine cutting. They make a point to keep their prices the same as national chains, so an adult haircut is $13, which is very reasonable. They run coupons in local magazines and ads, and Jenny told me that they would even accept competitor coupons as long as it brings them business. One small point: It's better if you call and make an appointment. You can walk in of-course, but they give preference to people with appointments. I'll call in next time before I go there.
