"And I will sing Waiting for the gift of sound and vision"…read more(David Bowie) One of the side effects of living in your town for almost 40 years is that your doctors eventually retire and you'll need to find a replacement. It happened with my primary care physician (as well as his replacement). It happened to my dentist. And it happened to my eye doctor. So that explains why in December 2015, I became a patient of Solinsky Eye Care when they took over my eye doctor's practice upon his retirement. Solinsky has ten locations across Connecticut, and I visit Dr. Jessica Olewnik at the Avon office. She has been fantastic to work with. She is friendly, personable, and extremely thorough and helpful. Solinsky is very proactive on keeping up with technology and industry advances. Did you have one of those field of vision exams? Just a few years ago, the current technology would have you stick your face into a contraption that reminded me of a submarine captain peering into a periscope, like Sean Connery did in "The Hunt for Red October". Well, that is no longer state of the art. Yesterday I had the same test using a Virtual Reality headset! And I have to mention Solinsky's Front Desk Associate (I'm embarrassed I can't remember her name) who may be the greatest goodwill ambassador I've ever seen in a medical setting. She's been there forever and is a holdover from Solinsky's predecessor.

"I can see clearly now the rain is gone I can see all…read moreobstacles in my way" (Johnny Nash) We've become big fans of Warby Parker, and they've been our eyeglass vendor for a few years. We order in person and pick up the new glasses after a 25-mile drive to their West Hartford, CT store at the West Farms Mall. Ordering and fitting on-line are risks we aren't ready to take, but many people do this. But now we can visit Warby Parker by driving less than 5 miles to their newest location in the Shops at Farmington Valley in Canton, CT, where they took over space previously occupied by Coldwater Creek and a Yankee Candle pop-up store. The procedure was the same as it was in Manchester. You first meet with a salesperson to choose your frames, find (or set up) your account and order, confirm insurance, and review your prescription. Then an optician meets with you, makes sure the frame, lenses, and your prescription are all compatible with your face, etc. Then you finalize things with the salesperson, place the order, and await the arrival of your glasses. The young lady who helped us was new, and she did a nice job with a little help on some questions. Another young lady I spoke to was temporarily on loan from a WB Massachusetts location. The frame selection is amazing and range from simple conservative styles to bolder frames with color, shiny designs and more. Our glasses cost just $50 with insurance, and we were happy with the selection and service.

I was in such a pickle. My glasses had broken and I needed to get new glasses. I had followed Warby…read moreParker on social media and had never tried them, but was willing to. I walked in the store and was immediately greeted by a salesman named Dan. Dan was ever so knowledgeable. He shared with me that he had years of experience in this business. He knew just what frames would be flattering on me and helped me narrow it down and made the process so incredibly easy. He is terrific with customer service and I would highly recommend him. In fact, if I had an eyeglasses store, I would hire him to work for me! Great experience!

We managed an appointment within a week of calling -- very rare! -- and were taken to see the doctor with less than five minutes waiting. The exam was carefully done, eyes dilated, and the waiting precess comfortable. When it came time to pick out glasses we had a reasonable choice of affordable frames, though if you have the cash they have some really upscale frames (think Tiffany, Coach, etc.) They didn't push us to buy more, much appreciated, and they helped fit the frame and got us out in not much over an hour. We thought the doctor, the front desk staff and the young woman who fitted us were knowledgeable and helpful. This is not a large operation, but the interior is clean and they have a nice public restroom. Curiously, the outside of the building looks abandoned with grass and shrubs way overgrown. Somebody needs to fix that right away. We initially thought the place was shut down. But -- unless they get our prescription wrong or it is delayed arriving, we'll stick with four stars.

I got a prescription after my eye exam, from the doctor's office located within this LensCrafters…read more(Envision 2020). After researching their website, I figured out which style of glasses I wanted. I walked in on a Monday afternoon, it was slightly busy so I walked around and tried on some glasses. Everything was organized by brand, not prices or sizes. They had a large selection of glasses, reading glasses, and sunglasses. I was drawn to the Ralph Lauren and Ray Bans. A sales associate asked me if I need assistance and I said not at the moment; another one was able to assist me once I was ready. I needed advice on what kind of glasses would fit my face and nose, since I have a lower bridge nose and she said the keyhole style and the ones with the nose pads would probably work better for my face/nose shape. I picked a handful that I tried on and liked the style and fit. I sat down with her and went over what I wanted or didn't want (blue light, no reflective lenses, warranty, insurance, etc). I wore it and she sized it out for me. She said they will text me once it's ready, I paid, and I was on my way. I got a text and the glasses were ready in two days! They fit perfectly and I can see clearly now. The one year warranty is $34.99 and covers scratches and if it breaks (not theft or loss). I didn't get the sales associate's name. Overall, a good experience and I would definitely use them again.

Two bad experiences at Avon CT Lenscrafters, both involving a pair of glasses I had bought from…read moreLenscrafters and had had the frames adjusted there several times. The first problem was that they said they could not get me a new pair of frames like the ones I had to go with my lenses. So I left that day. Then most recently, when those frames broke, I went back in and asked for two things: 1) Help with taping my broken frames back together as I had no backup pair; they couldn't do that and 2) I asked them to make me a new pair of glasses with a new prescription. I started looking at frames and then after they had already seen my new prescription as if they could fill it, they then said they could not make me new lenses based on my prescription. Bad service all around for a long-time customer who had purchased frames and lenses from them several times. Unlikely to go back there at this rate. I give them zero stars.
