We stumbled across the Redwater kitchen after spending a half day at Devils tower. We had the Beet salad and the Turkey club sandwich. Both were excellent and the portions were quite large, so large we needed a take out container. The service from start to finish was top notch. Red water has been going downhill for the past few years. Yesterday I ordered a Philly cheesesteak. When I got my meal I took a few bites and it didn't not taste like the Philly cheesesteak I had several times previously to this. I told the waitress this is pulled pork and she went back to the kitchen. The waitress came back and said the chef said the cut was from the shoulder and shredded for their steak tacos. I said I didn't order steak tacos on a hoagie roll, I ordered a Philly cheesesteak. The waitress said - well I can discount it if you want to. I said nope, I just won't come back because this has been the trend over the last few years. Red water has been cutting corners and trying to save money all while charging more money. The food used to be much better and more fitting for Spearfish. It is now just overpriced and not worth eating. Definitely do not recommend. read more

Had a 15 min wait with space to sit inside. Order was taken promptly by a clean friendly waitress. Serving sizes are smaller than average, quality matches price. Beautiful place and service was excellent. 10 minutes after ordering I was told they were out of what I ordered. I changed my order to the pulled pork sandwich, my wife had the bourbon burger. Both came bare bun with side of ketchup. Meats were dry there wasn't even lettus or tomatoe. It was our anniversary and perhaps the worst food we've ever been served. Wow. You know when you walk in? Something tells you that it was not a good choice? Then the people behind you get waited on first (and I don't care about sections they set all of us, etc. I usually always cut anyone slack, but when the place is dead, come on man). Another waitress took our drink order and we knew were in for a ride and naturally in a hurry today. The other young lady brought our drinks and was friendly. Then our waitress finally comes around. By no means rude, just...irritating? Anyway we finally got our food ordered and watched her walk past the machine where she places the order. We said "I bet she spaced ordering". 25 minutes later she came by and says she forgot to "push the button" to place our order and offered a free cup of soup. We passed. Then the order finally arrived and she told us sorry for the wait that sometimes machines have glitches. So which was it? Forgot or glitch? Lie either way now. Well the food and it was so-so at best. Steak on tacos, Especially if tough, needs to be in small bites. Other lunch was just ok. THEN she never came back by to check on us, and we walked to the bar to get our ticket. We received the ticket and paid the young lady that took our drink order. Never saw our gal again. Now since this visit sucked, guessing the food was not as good because of it either. Wow! I travel a lot and finding food of this quality in such an unsuspecting town was shocking. The restaurant is very clean and modern and the servers seem attentive and helpful. The real show here is the food. Typically one would expect to nothing more than a local greasy spoon in small town USA, but the menu and quality of the food here is very upscale without the huge price tag it would have in bigger cities. The chef clearly takes great pride in his creations (he delivered the food himself) and it's no wonder why. Outstanding dishes that leaving you feeling satisfied afterwards. Writing negative reviews makes me sad and I've dragged my feet on this one because I wanted to make sure I had a really cool head, because the situation was just messed up and spoke of the worst in customer care and civility that I've run into for a while. First - Pros. Giving two stars because the food looked good and people who were eating near us told us the food tasted great. Cons - horrible service. Just terrible. If your waitress says, "I'm sorry I can't do that drinks are on me" after you ask to get mac & cheese added to your rib-eye steak off the kids menu (the only place it is), know that what she means is, "Get the hell out. I'm not putting in your tables order, and in 30min I'm sending out the kitchen staff to yell at you for even asking for this after I told you that the kitchen staff yells at me." So yeah. Know that your night may end up with you and your party, foodless, being yelled at by a crazed kitchen staff employee, but at least you got free drinks. read more

Redwater Kitchen is a hip restaurant located in central Spearfish. The atmosphere is casual, and the high booths ensure your conversation doesn't disturb others. The service was decent, though we couldn't help but feel forgotten at the end when our drinks ran dry and our check didn't show up. I ordered the Tri Tip sandwich with a side salad, which rather puzzlingly arrived unmixed on a plate. A rather uninspiring mixture of iceberg lettuce, slices of carrot, purple cabbage left me wondering if it came out of a bag-- but then surely it would've at least been mixed together? Onto the entree, the tri-tip sandwich, consisting of shaved beef, caramelized onion, mushrooms, and garlic aioli on a toasted roll. Also included: beef au jus-- which was extraordinarily salty. I also tried the salad, which came with corn and blueberries-- which I added chicken too. Unfortunately, this chicken was cold, dry and under seasoned. Was this chicken cooked today? Finally made it here to check it out and we loved it! You're immediately greeted as you walk in and one thing I noticed was all the staff were very friendly and welcoming. The food was delicious! Hubby ordered the special for the day, tenderloins with gnocchi and vegetables. I tasted it too and it was excellent! I got the crab and lobster dip that came with house chips and I loved it as well. We unfortunately stopped by on a bad night of service, both at our table and in the kitchen. We arrived around 7:30pm on a Thursday. There was maybe 8-10 other patrons in the restaurant. Our food took 45 minutes to arrive. I ordered the Parmesan crusted walleye, which was good but it did not come with the roasted potatoes as detailed on the menu. The server brought out a plate of Brussel sprouts about 5 minutes later which I did not order. I'm not sure if that was supposed to be a substitute for the potatoes. They did offer us free dessert because the food took so long. That was nice. The table next to us also had trouble with their food. They ordered a beet salad that came with no beets. Overall we were pretty disappointed with our choice to spend an evening here. read more

I was excited to try a new trendy restaurant in Spearfish and we were not disappointed. Trisha was our server and she helped to make our experience a great one! My husband had the flank steak and I had the salmon. Both were delish! $5 glasses of wine and $5 dessert was definitely a perk as well! We returned with my family in a party of 8 and my infant. Not overwhelmed by this establishment. First and foremost, the service was slow - we waited over an hour for food on a Monday at lunch time, and a bit painful - having to wait 25 minutes for waters and repeatedly ask for a salt shaker. We had a party of five people. All three people who ordered burgers (cooked medium) said they were absolutely over cooked. One person had a 6 oz. steak, salad and sweet potato fries - not cheap which is to be expected but she thought it all tasted good. The last had a Cuban sandwich and a smothered lettuce wedge which was definitely the talk of the table. As a final thought, outdoor seating may not be the best choice. The patio chairs were some of the least comfortable I've ever sat in, the outdoor speakers blared loud, whiny music, and when our food finally arrived, we became so obnoxiously swarmed by flies that we couldn't even take a moment away from swatting to enjoy it. I realize that some of these factors may be beyond the restaurant's control, but I thought I'd include all the details that went in to making this only a 3-star experience. I may eat here again, with the sole intention of trying the corned beef sandwich, which looked epic, but overall, not a jaw-dropping experience. read more

Wow, that was a horrible experience. After waiting 30 minutes for a table (that part was fine), we ordered and waited almost AN HOUR for food. No bread. No salad. No explanation. And no apologies. When we asked we were told one of the chefs walked out and they were understaffed. Tables all around us were frustrated. My complaint is not the hour, but how it was mishandled. The waiter and manager should have been at every table to explain, apologize, then bring you SOMETHING while you are waiting. Then the food finally came and it was so mediocre. Clearly previously frozen. The $22 steak has just 6 slices of steak. The beet salad had hardly any beets, they were canned, and it was overdressed.
