Redscroll is a very nice little store, has great selection of CD's and vinyl from every genre, and the prices aren't bad. However, there is one reason why I'm holding off on the last star and it's a biggie: The staff is nice for the most part (always happy to look something up and order it for you), but if you go there to sell records, there is one man you MUST AVOID! I don't know if he's the owner or just a manager, but he seems to be about mid-thirties with dark brown hair and beard (kind of like the actor Paul Giamatti). I guess he is a stickler and a perfectionist, because when I was cleaning out and selling my late father's record collection, and mind you it was a VERY extensive collection of over 3,000 records, I would go there and all of the other employees would pay me $75 or so for the decent quality records and 16 cents a pop for the kind of banged up ones that they'd use for filler, and I'd leave happy with very few leftovers. One time I made the mistake of bringing a fairly large haul to the store on a day when the Stickler was working, and he tossed most of the records aside like refuse and only took 5 or so and offered me $25. The other employees knew me well from my weekly visits to sell my father's collection and they knew I was hard up for money, so they kept trying to convince the Stickler that he was being too picky and should consider some of my other records. The Stickler insisted that he was going to only take the 5 he selected for $25. I was upset, but accepted the $25. So please heed my warning and if you go there to sell records and see the Stickler, take your records and RUN! Come back another day when he's not there and the really wonderful other guys there will treat you well. Overall, Redscroll is excellent, and it's nice to know there's a good record store still in CT, since Merle's in Orange is overpriced and run by a total crook, and the iconic Cutler's in New Haven is out of business. read more

I love this place. I also love that I live within 15 minutes walking distance from it! They have a huge selection of records, and I love the gems hidden away in the book section. I also loved the used section. They have a lot of "found in my parent's attic" types of records, but sometimes, that's exactly what you need on a rainy day as you sip some tea. The staff there is not overly friendly, but they don't give off the "my music taste is better than yours" vibe. These guys have also bought an ad in my old school paper, and I really appreciated that support. Overall, I can't recommend this place enough. Don't be intimidated; just go in and browse! You won't be disappointed. read more

From the outside it doesn't look like much but this record store is outstanding. The best I've personally ever been to. It's got the most variety I've ever seen. The staff there was very nice and courteous and helped me with anything I needed. There was great organization to the store as well. It was very easy to find everything I needed. The only complaint I would have is they did not have as many popular albums as you would expect. For the variety they had, they had very little of bands such as Zeppelin and Floyd. But overall a fantastic store I will definitely be back to many many times. Thank you Redscroll for expanding my musical knowledge and experience! read more

I agree with another reviewer who said that this is the best record shop in the State of Connecticut. Redscroll is very clean and the selection is well organized. I bought a dozen records on my first trip there. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The selection is really huge - much better than the other shops, which have a lot of records by artists no one has ever heard of. The prices are lower than other Connecticut record shops and the records are in better condition. Redscroll truly rates five stars. read more

It seems as though the theme with record store, thrift shop, and vintage shop reviews on this site often revolves around how "indie snob" the staff is or isn't. Personally, I could not give a flying turd about it. Regardless, it would be a misstep to write a Redscroll review without mentioning the fact that Josh and Rick perfect that blend of coolness and professionalism that often times finds itself being sacrificed one for the other. Now, onto what really matters - the goods. This is the breed of record store that renders you completely unable to walk out the door without something in hand. Whether it be a new sealed vinyl copy of one of your current top picks, a handful of great used old favorite LPs from the back room (always at dirt cheap to generously fair prices...these guys aren't bullshit collector thieves who want to suck every penny they can out of you), an awesome documentary DVD at a low low price, or a bunch of random punk, garage, or rock 45s....if you have even the slightest bit of good taste, you will depart a happy hoarder. Bottom line, if you consider value, comprehensive (and constantly updated) stock, an immensely knowledgeable staff, and a laid back environment essential components of a record store, then this is your go-to. read more

Went here before the APC show at the Oakdale the other night to quickly browse the cd selection and was shocked about what they carried. Never have I seen a store carry most of the artists this place carries in stock. Kudos to them. Their used cd selection was also really good and at what I might say is the best price I've ever seen for them. Will definitely be back next time I'm in the area. read more

Record stores the way they used to make 'em...cramped, full of awesome records (and yes, CDs for those of you have haven't figured out they're best used as drink coasters), boxes of 7"s you have to get on your knees to root through, and the all important flier/free shelf on the way out...I mean, where else are you going to get that Dirtbombs "Live At The Magic Stick" 7" AND see signs informing you that the Saxon records are in THIS box, and then see a "saxon cont." pointing you to the other ones? Nowhere my petroleum byproduct addicted friend, nowhere. They'll order records for you if they don't have it, there's a constant influx of used records, and you can also use the store as a conduit for the comings and goings of the Connecticut underground scene. They just need to bring back the Lord of The Rings pinball machine!! read more

Tremendous record store located in the center of CT but worth the trip! Their new section is rich and interesting, with lots of great labels like Numero Group and Sublime Frequencies being well represented as well as many others I'm happy to discover. Their used room in the back is massive and full of crazy deals! In short, I love this place and head up there at least 2 or 3 times a year from NYC. They also carry a selection of books and other musical paraphernalia; really pretty comprehensive for a relatively compact space. *The one thing that Red Scroll seems to have that larger stores in the city don't is the feeling of being an oasis of culture in an otherwise humdrum town. I grew up going to Trash in Danbury and it functioned as the source of all things cool for the surrounding towns. In my sepia-toned daydream Red Scroll is that to the local community. Whether that is true or not I can't really say, but it seems like the spot where you would run into like minded folks, where bands might be hatched and ideas shared. Regardless it's top-notch and Wallingford is lucky to have them! read more

Really friendly people, great selection of new and reissued titles separated from the used stock, even a (free) old school arcade machine. New Arrivals bins ran far better than most shops with rare stuff priced to move. Unfortunately the used records selection sucks, I was wondering why there was nothing even remotely interesting while even basic commons like Led Zep or Pink Floyd were missing, then heard the dulcet screech of tape guns in the basement. Yeah, this is a Discogs enterprise, with the chaff upstairs at $6 and under. Still, if I were local I'd be in here weekly with the New Arrivals (and Heavy Metal section, though not my thing) being that well put together. read more

One of my favorite record stores in the Tri-State for many reasons. I love the curated feel from like-minded lovers of the obscure. They carry things that most stores don't and at an excessive amount from Italian soundtracks, ambient and international. All of the records are sleeved and have the price, genre and condition written on them which already sets them apart from others. The two front rooms are all new aside from the used recent arrivals, which I always enjoy checking for some rare Brazilian or Jazz find and the back room is filled with used vinyl generally priced $3-$5 which is outstanding. Their Black Friday sale is something special to me and I've woken up at dreadful hours to be first in line. There's a tent outside housing about 30 crates of dollar records and RSD releases. This is also when you start to feel the real independent CT spirit with other record nerds, like myself discussing their rock bands and local breweries like Thimble Island. read more

I've lived in CT all my life but only recently discovered the pocket of greatness that is Redscroll. It's a relatively small store, but so densely packed that you could easily spend an afternoon browsing. I went in not looking for anything specific and came out with a bag full of records that I'd normally only be able to find on the internet. They have a decent selection of new and popular vinyl, but they specialize in underground stuff. It's so great that a brick-and-mortar record store, especially one that leans toward the esoteric, can survive and thrive in the digital world. Absolutely one of the best shops in New England. These guys (and gal) are really serious about good, interesting, independent music (across genres). They order so much new music and have plenty of used stuff in back. These guys get it: very fair prices, a great selection and a real focus on the indie artist. They have been great in the past about ordering specific pieces for me and holding them aside. I do wish that they had a little more easily accessible listening station. read more

Great record store. The front is filled with new selections and has a couple of shirts and other merchandise. They also just got an arcade machine installed which is pretty cool. In the back section there is used records where you can find bands like Clapton/Billy Joel/Styx and other classic rock bands. read more

I have yet to see a record store that's as good as Redscroll, I haven't been disappointed and found so much great music through them over the years. Most items are reasonably priced and everything is as organized as can be with so much stuff from all sizes of records to CD's and Cassettes. There is music for everyone there and they have a huge selection from the store online you can order from discogs. You can also send them a message there and have them hold some things for you for pickup for a few days at most if there is no events going on in the store at the time. I thought that was extremely helpful for people who don't have time to dig for to long and you see a lot online you want specifically. With so much to check out online to it makes it so much more accessible to a more modern crowd that prefers to listen and see what they like from home before they buy but with so much I'm sure many people will find a ton of random pick up's they'll love to just digging around. So they aren't a dusty record shop stuck in the past that looks down on all their customers either. The staff is no nonsense and knows how treat customers and do business. I AM NOT IMPRESSED!. I had brought my record collection to this store four times before and was given a fair amount of money only because the other owner was there. Looks like I got the STICKLER (the other owner) yesterday. More like a thief to me. I brought in three boxes of albums and he took more than half and offered me 60.00 for over 100 albums, if not more. I almost declined the offer but decided to take the 60.00 but drove off shaking my head. You could not round it off to 100.00? REALLY? I understand the albums were nothing special, but still, hope you are happy that you got all those albums for a great price. I will never return if I know the other owner is not going to be there. Well, I think I will never return period. I saw a lot of customers going in and out and purchasing albums yesterday. Its not like you are not making money in that store.
