They have fun events including listening parties for new albums and do a great job with record store day. Their record store days throughout the years have been fun. Redscroll Records is a record store that opened in Wallingford, Connecticut in April 2007. It was founded by friends and business partners Josh Carlson and Rick Sinkiewicz. The duo first met in 2003 through attending various local music shows. They initially founded 'Redscroll Records' as an independent record label for local musical acts. Then they started a mobile distribution operation with a catalogue of roughly 10,000 titles. Following the operation's success, Josh and Rick decided to open a brick & mortar location at 24 N Colony Road that specialized in music genres such as indie rock, hardcore, electronic, punk and metal. Although Redscroll carries a lot of mainstream releases, they also offer a wide selection of independent and obscure releases that you just won't find at a big chain music store. Although the store carries CDs and cassette tapes, vinyl is what dominates the racks. The format was just starting to enjoy a comeback at the time that Redscroll first opened. Fast forward to 2023: vinyl sales have surpassed CD sales for the first time since 1987. Redscroll relocated to their current (and much larger) location in November 2020. I've been shopping at Redscroll since around the time they first opened their doors. I've enjoyed watching their selection (and their location) continue to grow over the years. Places like this are a real gem. Listening to a vinyl record is a very special experience: you pull the disc out of the cardboard sleeve, you delicately place it on the turntable, the stylus comes down, and you grab yourself a comfy seat while you read the liner notes. Shopping in a store like Redscroll is an equally special experience. Large chain music stores put many small record shops out of business, but those same chains have also shut down their own retail locations in favor of online streaming sales. With the way things are going, I don't think places like Redscroll are disappearing anytime soon. I like to visit when I'm there because of the size but I struggle when I go and often spend less money then I intend to. I come from a strong retail background and I would like offer some suggestions: 1st: Everyone that walks in the door should be warmly greeted when they walk in the door. This is a retail establishment and the expectation is an exchange of goods and money. Nobody looks up or barely does when I walk in. This is a 101 in retail. When it comes to merchandising they need a lot of help. What is the action that people want to do when they go into a record store?? Flip through records and discover. But you can't. Because of their amount of inventory they pack them in so tightly and can't flip and have to pull out individually one at a time, which of course is tedious and tiresome and you just can't do it in a store that size. Additional they very few marked dividers. What they need to do is pull out some of the inventory to allow for browsing. Even their new records are packed in so tightly you can't really flip though them and they have a lot of money tied up in inventory. If people can't see it they won't buy it. And more dividers would be helpful as example for more major bands, they have none it seems. Keep in mind not everyone that comes in is young, and the ones that aren't are the ones that have more money to spend read more

Great selection, clean store, friendly staff, with the exception of one dude who looks bothered if you ask him a question. Could use more categories. For instance: instrumental, or exotica. No one knew who Les Baxter was? Hard to get to many of the records in the lower sliding wood bins. And one nearly came out too far and nearly collapsed. It's just too much stock and takes serious work to do some fruitful crate digging, at times overwhelming. I like the store overall for its variety, but just hoped for a better shopping experience as many titles get lost in the various bins. read more

I was there this past Saturday for Record Store Day. Got there at 5 and was number 27 in line. By the time it opened the line wrapped around the building but no doubt was 200-300 people. I know they'd sold out of a few limited titles by the time I got there, but was able to get every title on my list (other than the one I forgot to look for). Everything was neat and organized and overall the well run. The staff even let me go inside prior to opening to use the bathroom which was key. I did browse the regular store before going but didn't end up grabbing anything. read more

Redscroll Records has been my favourite place to get records since it first opened 12 years ago, in fact, I love it so much that even though I live in Buffalo, NY I still come here to buy and sell records when I'm back in Connecticut. I stopped in over the weekend to sell a crate of records I was looking to get rid of. The staff working was extremely friendly and extremely helpful during my stop and went through my records super quick. This store is absolutely packed with all types of records from heavy metal, Hardcore, and punk to hip-hip, soundtracks, and classic stuff in the large room in the back. On top of a great selection and a friendly, knowledgeable staff, Redscroll has an arcade machine and that makes this place the best. Overall, this will forever be my go-to record store no matter where I live and I highly recommend giving this shop a chance if you are looking for some new music! read more

Do not go shopping here if you want your bank account to be happy!!! OMG! This place is amazing. So organized by genre and alphabetized in its own section. Hard to find an artist they don't have. I found this gem by accident and stopped in to see what it had. Unfortunately, I didn't have a lot of time that afternoon. But, still walked out with a dozen or so albums and a promise to myself to go back. Three weeks later my daughter and I made the trek from the Philly area up to really check them out when I could take my time. So many albums, cds and tapes. We spent just over 4 hours in the store and never got to look at the dollar bins. We still left with 70 records and a handful of CDs. Records I had never knew existed! Records I haven't seen in decades! New albums. Damn near every genre (metal, rock, country, jazz, punk...). We added huge chunks to both of our collections. What a great way to spend a day with her. The staff is top shelf! Any questions were answered promptly and more than once an employee helped find an artist. Prices are almost as insane as their inventory. Albums I have passed on several times because of their price ended up in my stack on Saturday. Albums that go for 50+ in the Philly market were 20. Yes!! We had an excellent visit. Met some great people. Added a bunch of vinyl to our collections and had a great daddy daughter day to boot! Thank you!!!! read more

You can spend hours in here going through the boxes and boxes of records. They have tapes and cds as well. A little hard to find in the back of a warehouse, but just drive to the side of the building and they have good signage. read more

This is an amazing store for vinyl with equally amazing owners. Seriously everyone is so friendly. I was referred here by a clerk at a certain bookstore that now sells vinyl. He said it was great and the store didn't disappoint! It was my first time time in and the owner gave me a quick tour. Seriously you could spend days in here if you're a music junkie. New releases, used, funk, soul, jazz, rock, metal, bizzaro shit. You name it and likely you can find it. And unlike some other local stores, which I won't call out by name, everything is clearly priced so there's no surprises when you check out. Or you don't have to feel like a pest constantly asking the price of albums. The prices are in line with expectations. The store is well arranged and clean. There isn't a pile of dust on everything. What more can I say? You just need to go experience it, support a small local business, especially if you're a vinyl/music fanatic. I can pretty much guarantee you won't be disappointed! read more

The place has a pretty awesome selection of both new and used music. I know people that shop here for pressings of local punk and metal albums. I don't do so much of that. They do have interesting classical and jazz vinyl if you're willing to dig a little. The place is sort of what you see is what you get. It's not overly decorated and it lacks any real panache. Some people may appreciate the meat and potatoes vibe of the place. Maybe that is to appeal to the punk rock aesthetic. It is a large part of their clientele. The customer service is essentially nonexistent. The stuff is there to sell itself. I can't comment if the staff would have suggestions for you if you inquired. On a positive, you're not at the mall and their going to try to sell you a preorder of a new movie or a magazine subscription. I appreciate that. read more

I recently went old school and purchased a Fluance RT82 turntable, Sony receiver and repurposed a pair of Klipsch bookshelf speakers. Now I need something to listen to. I went into my basement, found a box of records and well, most of the titles were stuff I didn't care for anymore. So off to the record store I go. Well, Redscroll has a huge inventory of both new and used records. It brought me back to the days of going to E. J. Korvettes (if you know, you know) and flipping through the records, happily spending my meager allowance. I've been able to locate a lot of the stuff I listened to as a kid. Huge selection, friendly help, and a nice relaxed atmosphere. The prices for new are very reasonable as well as the used. Sure I can listen to Spotify or Apple Music, but there is something very comforting about putting the record on the turntable, lowering the arm, listening to a hint of static and yes playing the album through from start to finish; as the artist intended. Great store and I can't wait to go back and score some more LP's. read more

Hands down, best record shop in CT! Wide variety of records - both new and used. Plenty of heavy metal, pop, rock, jazz, and everything in between. Prices are certainly fair. They typically price UNDER the sale value as what's listed on Discogs for that particular record. Also, if you're not from the area, almost all of their records are also for sale through their Discogs. Staff are friendly and will help answer any questions, or help you locate a record that they may have just gotten in. Typically, most record stores seem to be heavy on the rock, pop, folk, etc., but Redscroll has an incredible selection of hip hop, funk, soul, world, and jazz music as well. Pricing is also incredibly fair and cheap. So many great condition used records in the $2-$6 range. A lot of new pressings for a few dollars cheaper than you can get anywhere else (including Amazon). It seems like they have the best deals on vinyl, period. So happy to have found this place on Yelp, and will definitely be back soon. read more

I recently visited this record store from out of town on a visit and had a really good experience. I am a very experienced record shopper in many states and countries, and this is a really great record shop! I've found that the mark of great record stores is moving product on a consistent basis and good customer service and this place has both going on. It seems like their core customers tilt more towards rock music, which I do not, but there was still a good, varied selection of other genres for me to browse through. Prices were very good too! Just about as close to a perfect record store as possible in the New Haven area. While Redscroll is seemingly out-of-the-way from everywhere, this little housefront hidden in the shadows of Main Street, Wallingford is well worth the schlep if you have the time to get there, and are OK spending two hours and getting through only half their stock. One of the things I love the most about Redscroll is they are a no-apologies record store. Oh, there are some CDs, but one look at the intimidating racks bursting with vinyl, their positioning in the store, Redscroll's inventory of LP sleeves, vinyl cleaning items, and cases, and you know you're not in FYE. I haven't even mentioned the infamous Back Room, which is stuffed wall-to-wall with very reasonably priced and well cared for records. Also, I don't know how the staff does this (OCD?), but they manage to place every single LP into it's own clear plastic sleeve and in black sharpie, hand scrawl the condition, the price, and in some cases other relevant stuff on the face. This makes for either: a) High turnover among Redscroll employees or b) An absolute joyous, no surprises shopping experience for the customer (especially the OCD ones like me) The staff is always cordial and willing to look at my "on the block" vinyl - which really should be any used record store's M/O. I mean, how else do you GET used records...? Redscroll also has a presence online and is a seller on Discogs.com which is very cool indeed. Great story: on that site I found a copy of Alice Cooper's "Schools Out" and contacted Redscroll about it. They told me all about it and even tucked it away for a few days until I could come claim it. What I got was a green label Warner Brothers early pressing which included the diecut stand and - shockingly - the panties! Oh, and the beyutch was a tick under NM. And the cost? A mind-bending $6.50! Redscroll's prices are among the best (and possibly most insane) I've seen in any record store. Really. My only criticism is that the racks are too jam-packed to comfortably sift through all of the vinyl - which is I suppose a backdoor complement to their almost unlimited inventory - but it still makes it a challenge to squeeze my post Sunday breakfast-stuffed ass through the wafer-thin, airplane-like aisles, let alone break into the racks spring-loaded with 33's. And God forbid there's another person in there... That's it - everything else at Redscroll is dandy. I will even call it a "day out" because when I somehow work up a big enough whopper to justify getting over there to Wallingford, I usually spend minimum two hours pounding the racks while avoiding calls from home. And isn't "escapism" what I'm dabbling in anyway, when in the year 2014, I'm figuring out creative ways to travel to Wallingford (of all places) to buy - and in some cases RE-BUY - records that I threw out in 1994??? read more

Fantastic store in the middle of nowhere Connecticut - although metal and hardcore are the genre du jour, there is plenty of stuff for everybody (a fantastic used vinyl room in the back is loaded with real clean vinyl, all priced reasonably)...small ding for having new stuff that is somewhat disorganized, but I've gotta guess this is more a result of being overwhelmed by incoming inventory! THE PROS -pretty organized for the most part -good selection of used vinyl -lots of genres, especially loved the "underground" section -fair prices -records were in pretty good shape -listening station -found parking pretty easy -found a few titles I've had on my list and some other pleasant surprises THE CONS -store should be open until 9 during the week -staff was ok, just not the most friendliest either Overall, I was glad I drove down to Red Scroll even though it was a good hour from where my hotel was. Picked up some good stuff I usually don't come across. I'd definitely go back and would hope to have more time to take a deeper dive into the inventory ! read more

We were on an East Coast record buying extravaganza and our first stop was in Wallingford. I found the shop to be extremely well organized and very easy to find my way around. They carry new and used vinyl, CDs, DVDs, cassette tapes, and zines. Prices were fair on the vinyl and really cheap on the used CDs but I can't speak to the pricing on the movies or anything else. The staff was really friendly and helpful. Someone brought their Boston terrier in while we were there so they're pet-friendly, as well. They had quite a bit of vinyl, organized into rock, metal, jazz, experimental, punk and dance as well as a new arrivals bin. The entire back room was mostly used rock and metal vinyl and the experimental/dance/punk was in its own room to the left. I loved that they wrote the album title and artist on the poly bags for easier browsing. Some of it was in front-facing bins that you could easily sort through but much of the rest of the rock was in Ikea Expedit shelving and I found it a little difficult to read through everything by spine only. It was well maintained and alphabetized but I did have to wallow around on the floor a bit while I shopped. Overall, a nice store with a pretty varied selection! We walked away with ten or so albums, some of which was kind of niche. Other reviews are correct, they have a large selection of Killing Joke and Mission UK vinyl (at least a little less now because we bought some of it). read more

Bought a handful of records, all of them were a minimum 400% markup on the Discogs listing for the same release/edition. I don't like having to check my phone at a record store to not get ripped off. Not sure how this is a functional business model. It's my own fault for not doing research - you can't fault a store for selling things at a price people will pay. But I really wonder about the point in supporting a brick-and-mortar shop that doesn't even try to compete with other prices. read more

Super helpful staff, on the busiest day of their year they personally helped me find a couple of records they had in their dense stacks. Good prices, great selection. One of my favorite record stores to go to in CT, even if I have to drive a little more than a half hour to get there, I'm usually there for an hour deciding on what records to purchase. Everyone that works there is very helpful and friendly, they usually have a list of their favorites that they've listen to for the month and so far they're very good listens as well. I'll begin by saying I haven't had much luck record-hunting lately, including some near-death experiences (I won't elaborate but lets just say it involved a very big dog). But I usually wind up at the flea market or if I really want something, Merle's (ugh...). I have driven by Redscroll countless times and finally decided today to take a look. I think the "underground" and "independent" kind of threw me, because I was expecting a bunch of local music, some vinyl, etc... but nothing that I would be interested in. Upon walking in it is a very small store, and there are used CD's in racks all around the front, plus a strip of vinyl on the right side. I saw that it was new vinyl, and the prices were a bit high, so I kind of just brushed it off until I realized they had a back room full of used vinyl... Holy shit they have a good selection! Pretty much anything I have ever been hunting for was there, and damn near mint. Prices were amazing too... they really keep it accessible to working-class people (funny thing is, you can go up the road and pay double or more for the same thing at another store I won't name). I was very impressed with the quality, price and overall care they take in keeping it clean and organized. This is definitely the place to go and check out if you haven't yet. I keep kicking myself for not checking it out sooner! Screw going to people's houses and getting basement mold and mildew.... I will definitely be buying my vinyl here from now on. This and Replay Records in Hamden are my two absolute favorites now. read more
