One of the cushions still had cat hair on it, and after brushing it off, the donations associate said "We have cat allergies in the building, so we need you to clean this sofa and bring it back". The downtown strip is a joy to walk down, and folks shopping for antiques will be pleased to see that there are a number of related businesses nearby (furniture, home goods, specialty items, even another antiques shop!) Inside the shop, everything is actually what you think of when you think "antique." Sometimes I feel that the places I try to shop for vintage/antique items are too polished now. I love the almost museum-like feeling of a shop that is crowded and full from floor to ceiling with treasures to be uncovered. The merchandise itself is VERY fairly priced. I found several beautiful pieces of jewelry for just a couple bucks each (a broach and two strands of fake pearls) and the higher quality jewelry available for purchase (i.e. real stones and pure metals) were also incredibly reasonable. I was blown away, actually, by the pricing. I have found that the thrift/vintage stores in downtown Portland are willing to gouge prices and are barely worth the work sometimes. This was NOT the case here, and I highly recommend you make the drive-- the bang-for-your-buck pays off. The person at the checkout was very friendly. She greeted us when we entered (and greeted every person who entered the store), was sweet and chatty during checkout, and didn't lose her cool even when a rowdy bunch of kids and a couple with a barkey dog were running around. Grocery items all seemed to be of questionable origin, freshness, and quality, and their prices didn't really seem to be any lower on most of them than what one would find at a conventional grocery store. I was amused by the "hardware" section. The tools were of laughably poor quality (far worse than Harbor Freight fare), and the prices were far too high for their (complete lack of) quality. Their apparel section has among the strangest fashions I've ever seen, and I suspect that none of them will actually ever sell. One curiosity, though, was a selection of rugs. If you're in Vancouver, and need a rug, this may be worth a visit.
