At the time of the scheduled appointment, my wife was 12 weeks pregnant and had already had a prior ultrasound confirming pregnancy. Despite this being, by definition, an initial prenatal visit with a new provider, we were informed the appointment would be billed as a new patient office visit rather than prenatal care, even though our insurance covers prenatal care at 100%. During conversations with billing management, we were told the visit would not be billed as prenatal care because pregnancy had not previously been established with their office. This was stated repeatedly using language such as, "we don't know that you're pregnant," despite confirmation via prior ultrasound. The tone of these conversations came across as dismissive and condescending rather than collaborative. We were informed this was their policy and that it would not be changed or adjusted, even with confirmed pregnancy documentation. Our understanding is that once pregnancy is medically confirmed, visits for obstetric care are typically billed as prenatal care, regardless of whether the provider is new. These discussions occurred prior to any in-office care. Based on these conversations, it was clear that billing decisions were strictly policy driven, with no flexibility to work with patients or insurance on appropriate coding or resubmission. We ultimately canceled the appointment and sought care elsewhere. Sharing this experience so other expecting parents are aware of the office's billing approach and communication style before scheduling.

I was sick throughout the whole pregnancy, and on the day I delivered my son, Dr. Dupree was shocked to discover I was pregnant with twins. It was fraternal, and there was a second placenta I was instructed to deliver. I never received an apology nor was I given the placenta or the remnants of the baby so that I could mourn the loss with a funeral and have closure. It was extremely traumatic and bittersweet because I had one healthy baby and lost a baby--which I had been denied for nine months by the doctor and his staff that it existed. I was 28 at the time and treated like I was too young to understand what had happened to me. I wish now I would've sued because it still weighs heavily on my heart to this day. Every time I celebrate my son's birthday, I'm reminded of what happened to me, how I was treated, and what I lost. No one should ever go through that.

When I returned all the papers, I was given a binding arbitration agreement to sign. When I asked the receptionist what is an arbitration agreement, I was told to "watch the video" and given a pink iPad. I sat and watched a five minute video which explained what and why the arbitration process is being implemented. After the video, I read through the agreement which clearly stated that by my signing I was giving up my right to sue in court with a jury, I would not be able to appeal any decision by the arbitration panel and I was giving up my husband's, father's and family's right to sue in court. I thought who would sign this? Certainly not me. So I walked up to the receptionist window and told the receptionist I was not going to sign the agreement. I told her I was uncomfortable signing this. She told me in that case she would have to cancel my appointment because signing the agreement was mandatory! I was in shock. I was in need of medical attention but was abruptly and arbitrarily denied any further treatment because I would not sign away my rights. How this should have been handled was that a copy of the binding arbitration agreement should have been sent to each patient informing them that if they wished to continue to remain in this practice, it was mandatory that they sign it and return to the office. Whoever chose not to sign would not be given any further appointments. To wait until a patient who needed medical attention showed up and then confronted with this awful agreement and then if you do not sign it your appointment is cancelled on the spot - knowing that this patient made the appointment due to an ongoing infection is beyond inappropriate. I am not blaming Dr Dupree, who I really felt is a great physician. If Administration felt comfortable about this binding arbitration agreement they are mandating the patients to sign, they would have been more transparent and forthcoming by informing and giving patients the chance to review and think about whether or not they want to sign in a non-medical environment not when they are in the waiting room waiting to see the doctor! I found another gynecologist today but wonder how many patients were blindsided by this binding arbitration agreement. What a awful experience that I will not forget.
