Today, July 19th, was my first bad experience here. I had a rough week and was in need of a good meal. I went to a place before this and they were closed so I was in a desperate, bordering hungry, mood. I really wanted either French toast or Waffle and chicken. Chicken because most places around don't have non pork breakfast meat. Their Chicken and waffle is "hot honey" and I didn't want that. By the end, because they didn't have the right buttons for me to order what I wanted vs. their combos I ended up with a soggy waffle with an egg on top, I don't eat eggs and the smell makes me nauseous, and they didn't have to-go cutlery or any syrup for the waffle. I was in tears on my way to my car. I was stressed and starving and this was just a last straw. Very disappointing for a place that is usually great. read more

This eatery is actually located within Forbidden Peak brewery so no signage out front to clue you in on its location. Suprisingly ambitious, diverse and ever changing menu! I have always found the food to be quite good mixing in some standard bar food fare with some out of left field options. Stuff tried: Oxtail kare curry: did not expect to see this filipino comfort food on the menu at a brewery in Juneau! Version as the name suggests is a more fusion approach which sports a more curry forward (sort of like Japanese curry) sauce. Still very oxtail bone suckingly delicious over rice! Chicken wings: lightly flour dusted and fried. They use the extra large wings here so a few wings go a long way. Spicy oil dipping sauce is a must. Bavarian Pretzel: different texture than what I was expecting and slightly sweet I expect that the next time I am back the menu will be completely different! Ample parking (before the bar and yoga place next door get crazy) and the view is great when the weather and traffic cooperate. Bonus: few kids this time. Unfortunately, that's where the best parts ended. I am so sad to report that this place keeps disappointing. We keep trying and it just fails harder. See pictures of the horrendously overpriced, mediocre, and even just plain bad food. $21 for a tiny mushroom burger special with shiitake mushrooms absolutely ruined with weird soy flavor, havarti that tasted more like plain swiss, and absolutely no frills is insane. At least the fries were good. The $15 pretzel had the weirdest texture, but the sweet mustard and uncooked, gritty "beer cheese" were even weirder. That cheese tasted like raw flour and felt disgusting as it congealed before it even made it to the table. Zero beer flavor. We didn't eat it and that ruined the whole experience for the pretzel. But the biggest crime of all was the 14oz "35-day dry-aged NY strip steak" with "chimichurri" for $38. It was chewy, way overcooked, and flavorless. It certainly didn't taste or look dry-aged and that sauce was nothing like any chimichurri I have ever had or made. The worst part was that it came pre cut--a dead giveaway that the cook couldn't do a medium rare. Grey throughout with barely any pink on this 1.25" thin steak that didn't even have the pellicle and fat cap properly trimmed, seared, and rendered. I doubt it was even Choice grade. It might have been the worst steak I have ever had. And I just can't tip anymore at a place that makes you go to the window to order, wait forever for them to unceremoniously dump your food off without ever checking to see if it's ok, and then bus your own table. At least our group made for good company and the beer from Forbidden Peak distracted us (a little) from the food. We mused and wondered if they stole their logo from the Department of Natural Resources. Then we all agreed we think this is our last visit, especially when even BREEZE IN makes a better steak! read more

I usually find Yelp reviews to be pretty accurate and helpful. I have used Yelp since they were only as many cities as you have fingers on your left hand, but I started contributing to Yelp in Spokane when I was disappointed by the number and quality of reviews there. (Spokane is the complete opposite now, the Yelp community there is THRIVING!) I don't feel that way about the reviews for this place! They are way, WAY off! This might be the best food I've had in Juneau! And...only 2.5 stars? If a place gets 2.5 stars in Anchorage, I probably won't even go there. It's hard to describe the food here. They say "International Street Food", and I think that's a pretty good start. I got a Waldorf side-salad and Pork Adobo. I have never much liked Pork Adobo, but I thought it might be because the places I've had it at aren't all that great. I was right, and this place completely changed my mind! The pork was perfectly seasoned and the brussels sprouts they paired with were perfectly roasted with just the right amount of caramelization! The salad was bright and fresh. It was also pretty damn big for a side salad. This brewery is worth visiting just for this food, seriously. I think this place does food better than the brewery does beer. I will say the food is amazing. But the parking is a crap show. No handicapped parking up front you have to park behind the building and walk pretty far. I'm in heart failure and my son is blind so walking from behind the building is almost impossible. They have a reserved spot up front says for taproom which makes you think it's for the restaurant but apparently its for another business would help if the put a sign up saying private business parking or along the lines instead of asking you to move mid meal. The food is good the parking is not if your handicapped its not available to get to easily. My friends and family won't dine again due to the parking. read more

We love eating at Red Spruce. The Juniper Summer Salad is always amazing and I rarely order anything different. Rad Dad Pad Thai and specials are also delicious. I love how Red Spruce makes everything from scratch and uses local greens and ingredients. The view of the harbor from Forbidden Peaks is amazing and sitting outside on a sunny day is superb. When given a choice for dining out, Red Spruce is definitely my favorite eatery in town. read more

The other reviews are pretty accurate. Cool street food concept with international inspiration. Bland delivery. The service is adequate: a cashier with a smile, pretty fast food while you enjoy a beer from the brewery. I think the menu makes it seem like things will be better than they actually are. If you just go in expecting bar food, it does the job. FYI I've had chicken as street food in Thailand many times. The Thai chicken here was inspired but off. I almost never leave food on my plate. Quite dry, a bit overly salty, with some kaffir lime leaf powder sprinkled on top. I couldn't give it away at my table. Stick with the crinkle cut fries and you'll be fine. read more

My wife had the Kung Pao Bowl and said it was tasty. I watched her enjoy it for a few minutes, and then she was left with two cups of rice, so the ratio was off. Add some more veggies and Tofu guys. I had the Kahlua pork burger. Also tasty, but not at all spicy as the menu states. Super smokey, which is OK, but that detracted from any sauce used. Also, I love the idea of a bit of a crisp crust, but it was pretty dry overall. Better than my last dining experience, but overall, they end up being a convenient place to eat rather than a restaurant I seek out. read more

The menu isn't very vegetarian friendly, especially when trying to avoid carbs. And they seemed to not like it when I asked about getting a quesadilla without meat. So I had the brussel sprouts and he had the carne asada fries. Both came with a topping of pickled veggies, which was good. The food menu here seems to change from time to time so if you don't come to Red Spruce often (which is inside Forbidden Peak Brewing) then you are bound to get something different almost each time. We had Bratwurst here which were fantastic! It was around Oktoberfest time so it made perfect sense to get a Bratwurst and a Oktoberfest beer. We also picked a side which was not the first pairing that comes to mind when eating a brat and that was Lumpia. I had several pieces of that too and it too was fantastic! I really like where Red Spruce is located and how it's situated because you can go over the Forbidden Peak counter and enjoy a beer with your meal and admire the gorgeous view out the front window of Auke Bay! This was a great experience we had, fresh off the plane! read more

This is located inside of forbidden peak and is one of the establishments we frequent often. The food at Red Spruce is either a 4* or a 2*, seems to be hit and miss depending on who is cooking. Their fusion dishes seem to be the best ones. I do love that the menu is always different and very creative. A bit small, can't always find enough on the menu for a full dinner. I really have high hopes for them to grow and expand their menu. Staff is very nice. Hope this place keeps making improvements. read more

The pad thai is actually offensive to Thailands culture. Chan's is right next door. We've tried several other dishes which were inconsistent at best. Salt (lionels other restaurant) usually has a poor reputation of serving spoiled food or salads that are 90% dressings and that is translating to red spruce too. read more

I have yet to have a meal from Red Spruce that isn't fresh, tasty, and pretty to look at. Their rockfish dishes have been consistently amazing; especially the tacos with a yummy mango-type chutney. Juniper's summer salad is peppery but delish, and the fries with dipping sauce are a total indulgence. I struggled to find something to order in this limited menu to share with friends while having a couple of beers. We got a pretzel with cheese, fries topped meat, cheese and sour cream, and a fish taco. Food was bland, cheese was watery and the fish taco was one piece of fish laying on a tortilla with a few pickled onions on top. Overall disappointing. read more

The Alaskan Salmon Burger USD 13 was quite small and not all that wonderful. The Pad Thai, starting at USD 10 for a small order, USD 22 for a large, add tofu 2/4, add pork belly 3/6, add chicken 4/8, to burn 2. The Pad Thai was very good tasting and recommended. I don't know why I keep ordering food from here. It has to be from simply convenien. If it wasn't in the brewery I wouldn't have went back. Even with their menu update the food continues to be a swing and a miss. I recently got what they called Soba Noodle. When I placed the order I immediately knew I was about to be disappointed. The cashier turned and said an order for the chicken noodle soup. And that's exactly what I got. The noodles were stuck together in a giant congealed ball. The boiled egg was over boiled but still cold as ice in the middle. It tasted like a can of Progresso with some old noodles and refrigerated egg tossed in. The burgers are the only burger I've had that don't have a taste. Very strange. read more

I always say I'm going to remember go eat before we go to the brewery but I always forget. The one thing I like on the menu was the pad thai which they no longer have. This place is decent if you're hungry while grabbing a drink at Forbidden Peak. If you do order anything, the Hey Ha Party Wings are great and I love the sauces they come with! Their menu changes so there might be specials or something different every time you go. We've been a few times and the food here is hit or miss. When we ordered the pork belly fried rice it was drenched in oil that pooled at the bottom, so not great. Their pad thai isn't bad. Not great but decent for Juneau. The sidewinder fries are good and the smash burger is decent but needs a bit more flavor and some crunch, like lettuce or pickle, it's just two patties with cheese. read more

I'm excited for what it will become. They opened a week or two ago, so there's still a lot of getting kinks worked out. It is located within the Forbidden Peaks Brewery, and tonight (Friday) was crazy busy - insanely full, loud, raucous. Loud enough to have to raise your voice (nearly yell) at the counter to place your order. We placed our order at 6:31pm according to the square receipt (the time comes into play later on). Our ticket rang in at $43 (before tip/credit card fee/cbj tax) for adobo, a churro dessert and veggies. My wife had asked how long the wait might be since she was already hungry bordering on hangry - they estimated 20 minutes. We grabbed a drink from the brewery and hovered waiting for a seat. Tonight there was a multi-bday party which contributed to the packed tables and the volume, but even without the party, there were still tons of folks in the facility. We eventually landed a seat, and sipped. Eventually my phone came out and we took to playing a game and generally trying to find ways to pass the time. At 7:45, I finally approached the counter to ask what was a food that could be made quickly to offer my wife, and the nearby table that included a pregnant gal, who had been waiting equally long. I spent another $20 on a set of pretzels, yikes. I was told that our set of tickets was next and it should only be 5-10 minutes. The pretzels came out quick (4 min), the sauce for the pretzel came out another minute later (weird), and then after another 3-4 minutes, the dessert came out. Within another 3 minutes the adobo was delivered. We ate from it and concluded it was time to go. We grabbed a to-go container from the counter, as I finished the last bites.... and then the last piece of our meal (the "freestyle veggies") was delivered at 8:16. Wow. The food was good, I suppose, but perhaps not to my tastes. The churros were incredibly light poofs, but were a touch heavy on the sugar for their weight - I'd rank them 7/10, but my wife would probably mark higher. The pretzel was delicious (9.5/10) but I'd put the sauce a touch lower (8/10). The pretzel was near scalding. It was somehow light, fluffy with a delicate crust and yet still pretzel like. I'd go back for the pretzel tho I'm sure it didn't hurt that I was pretty hungry at this point. The adobo was good (7/10), but not traditional as compared with others I've had from living in Juneau and having adobo from Filipino preparations. The veggies were good too (8/10) - spinach, untrimmed broccolini (sp?), and some kind of root veggie cubes. Again, not bad, but not a show stopper either. The nearby table who finally were fed too noted that the fried rice deserved an 8/10 (rice seemed underdone), and sweet potato dish ranked as a 9/10, but could have used something more as contrast - she thought a small amount of rice would have been nice. I was impressed by the establishment's recognition after my visit to the counter that others might have grumbling tummies. I saw several pretzels and fries being delivered later on, but I was still a little dismayed that our wait and desire for food cost me extra. My wife (bless her) took the vantage point that my $20 fed a lot of people who were most certainly hungry. She's not wrong. I'll go back, but I'll aim for a time where I expect it to be dead quiet to see how long it takes. Let's hope it doesn't come out in a weird order after 90 minutes of waiting. read more

Just not fantastic. I've eaten here multiple times and have had good meals far less than I've had bad meals. The whole menu just doesn't really make sense for being in a brewery. They could easily make a menu with the standard bar food and make a killing, but instead they try and do this "fine dining" menu that's just kind of silly. And it seems like whenever I do find something that I actually like on their menu it's gone the next time I go to the brewery. It's really a shame because this place is in an amazing brewery that serves pretty solid beer. read more

Just ok. We had the fish tacos and fish and chips. The portions appeared to be descent BUT the batter was so thick and heavy - it was like eating rubber. Because the batter was so terrible, we pulled it off and ate the fish what little of it there was. The fish tacos would have been amazing if the fish was grilled or the batter was lighter like a tempura batter. So disappointing. If we go back we will it have any of the fish items. read more

Very Disappointing. This restaurant claims to serve "global street food." While street food can vary widely from place to place, at its core it should have two essential components: 1. Fast 2. Inexpensive This had neither. We got an order of pad Thai with no meat and an order of fried rice and it was nearly $40. It took over 25 minutes to get our food. To top it all off, and this is coming from somebody who LOVES salty food, the pad Thai was so salty it was basically inedible. Just in case anybody from the restaurant is reading this, we were there Sunday, March 6, at 3 PM. Whoever was cooking absolutely ruined the pad Thai. Ordered a variety of things including fish and chips, pad Thai, and salads. The only things worth eating out of everything were the salads and fries. The fish and chips batter was super rubbery and tasted like very old oil. It was super disappointing because we got a recommendation to go here and it was just rough. read more

The view is great. The beer is tasty. The peak staff very friendly. Do not go to the brewery to eat. Our 15 dollar burger was raw, no fries and 3 dollars more if you wanted lettuce and tomato. Saw someone else bring a burger back that was still kicking. They need a good food cart. read more

Food was delicious, but timing of food was not done well. I ordered a burger for myself and wings for my wife. My food arrived and I wanted to wait for my wife's food to arrive before eating so we could enjoy our meal together. Well, needless to say, 20 minutes later and a hamburger eaten, she gets her wings. The folks that ordered after us received a boat load of food and we still waited another 5 minutes for the wings. We may give the place another try, but it is common sense to serve all people at the table at the same time so they can enjoy their meal together. read more
