Very disappointed based on everyone int the area recommending this place. they need to step up their game. Maybe Seneca Lake is just not used to good eats because everyone recommended it in the area. I'm sad for seneca lake if this is the best they've got for food places. Overall I had a lovely Columbus Day weekend with my husband as far as the gorgeous scenery goes...however the food for the entire weekend stunk! We started with the meat and cheese board. That was actually my favorite part of dinner, except for the chicken pate...just recuse I don't like pate to begin with. I would've fathered another meet live prosciutto instead. Also, I know it's crustini, but I almost broke a tooth. Time to get a different bread selection especially because I saw another review complaining about how hard it was too. Stop ignoring reviews as reading them could help your business. We ordered the prix fixe menu with the wine sampling and None of the wines were a hit out of the six glasses we tried between my husband and I and to make Matters even more annoying there were fruit flies swarming us. And how cheesy is this....they brought us random pieces of paper and told us to cover our glasses between sips to keep the fruit flies at bay. For paying $150.00 for dinner for 2 we should not have to deal with fruit flies!! Main meal: My hen was okay, nothing memorable. Husbands main meal: the steak. COLD! He was so disappointed. My wife and I come down periodically to the finger lakes to enjoy the wine and food, we tried the red newt last Sunday as a suggestion from one of our friends. Had I known what a displeasureable experience this was going to be, we would have opted for somewhere else. The menu wasn't extensive. The atmosphere is not cozy, it was like eating in a hospital cafeteria! The waitress was nice, but inattentive, we waited for our food for 45 minutes! When we got our food it looked "ok" but it was almost inedible. The dinners were very extremely overpriced. My wife's chicken looked good, but but she had a hard time cutting into it and when she turned it over it was burnt. She ate it becasue she was starving after the wait but didn't want to wait another 45 minutes for them to remake it. My steak was ordinary too. Take my advice and don't waste your time or money here!! Maybe you have to be drunk to like there food read more

We went to see about a tasting today at the end of our wine trail tour (put together by our hosts). We arrived at 4 PM. We were asked how many and if we had a reservation. Big group, no reservation. Told we could not be accommodated. Fine, we went somewhere else. No problem. Problem was that the woman who told us was rude and snippy about it. We have no idea why she was nasty to us, but I'd rather drink drain cleaner than go back if that's how they treat people. We gave her the info she asked us for and said "okay" to her response. The food here is a bit pricey but good. I got the vegi burger and thought it could use more vegetables in the box but it tasted really really good. The wines were good but not amazing, except their dessert wines were excellent. The man doing the tasting was extremely knowledgeable and fun to talk to. We stopped here while touring the wine trail for lunch during January. I had been here years ago during the summer and was seated in the restaurant proper. This time, however, we sat in a portion of the tasting room because the restaurant was closed for the winter (for renovations? heating? no idea). So, the decor is not very nice in the winter. The food is fantastic though. I had the duck confit which was served on slices of baguette with goat cheese. My girlfriend had the meatloaf sandwich. While I really enjoyed my meal, I was jealous about the sandwich so I'd suggest that given the option. We'll probably come back, although it'll be in the summer. read more

Our group did the 90 point Riesling tasting, a regular tasting, and had lunch and we had a wonderful time! James was extremely knowledgable about the wine and was able to answer all of our questions all while making it a fun time. The food was a little overpriced, but it was very delicious and filling. Red Newt is an hour and 15 minute drive for us.... But worth every minute! We love the Red Newt dry wines ( both red and white). I have never been disappointed in my food selection! Tonight I ordered from the chef's menu. I enjoyed the sea bass, it was phenomenal and I can't wait to try to recreate it at home! There are 2 listings for this location, I am posting this to both as we did try the food. We arrived about an hour from closingon a slow day, and while I felt like we were inconveniencing them a bit, this was my favorite experience on Seneca lake. The building is just beautiful, spacious and accommodating. The staff is super laid back and about as unpretentious as you will find. Some may find the chill nature off putting but for me It meant I could relax and not pretend I was some wine snob. We ordered the cheese plate and even though, once again, it was empty they made it for us. SOOO good! The woman was great at explaining things and really put the business into perspective. They have some crazy fortified wines (that we had to have) I would almost liken them to young ports on crack lol. Great with cheese. We broke the bank at this one, you will too. They have a bigger menu at times, and I trust its spectacular too. Love it here, would recommend to anyone. A note to the owner- you have amazing staff, a precious asset! Kudos! read more

OK, I am reviewing their service since we did not get to the food and wine stage in their cafe. No, seriously. We walk in. Some middle-aged lady at the entrance asks us if we came for lunch. Yes, we say. She directs us to the dining room. We go there and notice that they have a nice outdoor porch overlooking the lake or maybe some greenery, but something nice. The hostess is not going with us. We go by ourselves there. We notice that a few people sit on the porch and there are available tables but they were not cleared of dirty dishes and bottles (yeah, I know, very "appealing"). But we are hungry and we just ask the also middle-aged and unsmiling guy who seems to be the head waiter to clear a table for us. He looks at us with an expression of a CEO being distracted from a major deal but walks outside and does something there on the porch. In the meanwhile, we sit down to an indoor table. The first lady brings the menus. We tell her we are expecting a table to be prepared outside for us. She says, sure, no problem. We sit there for some time. Nothing happens. Eventually, we catch the middle-aged unsmiling guy who is a waiter but puts on airs like he is a busy CEO. We ask him about that table outside. He looks at us like, 'again you are bothering me?' Then he says, that couple over there just got that table you wanted. I was in shock. Seriously? Maybe he could have let us know that the table is ready? Maybe they could just bus their tables in time? In short, we just stood up and left. went to Stonecat Cafe, two minutes' drive from there. We were welcomed in a friendly manner, put to sit on their beautiful porch, listening to some nice jazz. We had a great meal at Stonecat. So, basically, we never come again to Red Newt. It's not the most scenic winery but it was fun. The server was friendly. Thankfully I had made a reservation so we were brought to a tasting area immediately. I was not a big fan of their wines, which is why I took two stars away. It may be a personal preference thing though, and I wouldn't tell someone to avoid it just because of my taste. read more

Ok wine, but the wine tasting guide had limited knowledge and wasn't properly trained. Not much of a view either as it is off the lake.

Went for a wine tasting and also got food from the bistro. Staff was friendly and pricing was okay. I'd recommend doing the food and wine tasting / pairing plate. That was really fun and delicious. Only suggestions are to make the menu easier to understand. Changing between the winery / bistro was pretty confusing. One bill and a free wine glass next time, please! read more

Wine was was great and our sommelier was nice. We were there for about 30 minutes and were the only guests they had. We enjoyed their drier wines, the Red EFT and their Cab Franc. When asked if we could purchase glasses of wine and eat our picnic we were told no because of the cafe they had On premise (that wasn't open). It definitely turned us off a little especially because we were willing to BUY more wine. I need to add that my husband has Celiacs and we have to pack food to avoid cross contamination. Even when we told them it was still a no. The wine was great that is why the 4 stars are present! read more

This place is all around awesome. Our party of 4 sat outside for lunch. I chose the pork and beef gyros and the portion was large and filling. The house made pita bread was fresh and the perfect texture. My friend had the smoking pig (ham and cheese) and it was delish. Everything is so fresh. The next friend had the griddled max n' cheese. With bacon. Wow! It was rich and just the right amount of crunchy. It was so good our other friend finished it after his was finished. The shaded patio was so pleasant with a view of the rolling hills. There is a variety of seating options, including tables in the sun and also inside. The friendly person that took our order at the counter was so helpful and had helpful tips, which answered all our questions. Prices were appropriate. I'd come back in a heartbeat. Beautiful location overlooking Seneca Lake....be sure to sit outside on the deck. I had the tortellini made with all local ingredients. Paired with the dry white wine flight, the taste combo was spectacular. Also ordered at my table were the beef tips, which were very tasty. Off the main road but definitely worth the turn. James was in the tasting room and walked us through their wines. Definitely one of the pricier vineyards in Finger Lakes but their wines are really good. The reserve was my favorite but I would not buy a $50+ wine. The Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc were definitely some of the best we had esp the Pinot Noir. Stopped in for dinner, didn't have a reservation but was able to sit at the bar for dinner. Service was great, a foodie staff, and a sommelier gave great info on the wine choices. They had a three course deal, five selections for each course, for $45. You are able to pair a glass of wine with each course for an extra $20. The food was excellent and so was the wine. The atmosphere at the bar was fun and had a live jazz band playing that night. I would definitely go back next time I visit the Finger Lakes region. read more

I can personally vouch for the integrity of the 2013 Dry Riesling. The food menu is small but well executed. We had a grilled cheese with black bean patty and the meatloaf. Both were highly appetizing. I would suggest more dressing on the kale and less acidity on the carrots, but overall this was an extremely pleasant lunch. read more

We came to the Red Newt on a Watkins Glen Road Rally weekend - the rally started here and the bistro provided us the packed lunch for the lunch break. The sandwich itself was a turkey and cheese with a pesto spread, simple but delicious. We ended up coming back another night to eat dinner and it was wonderful! We started with the local cheese plate, I had the seared scallops with a roasted red pepper sauce, my husband the filet mignon and both my father-in-law and mother-in-law had the half a roasted chicken. Everyone loved their meals. The staff was so friendly and helpful. They even opened the wine store part so we could buy some bottles to take home with us. I was deeply saddened to hear about the Whitings' accident and Debra's subsequent passing. The winery will not be the same without her. read more

Just an amazing experience all around. Me, my wife and our 1 year old had a fabulous dinner catching a beautiful sunset on the deck here. The entire staff was so attentive and kind from the moment we were greeted at the door upon arrival. Being the first time back to the Newt since baby we were not let down. I had the filet from the chefs menu with a wonderful cab franc and the misses had a super local lamb gyros and bistro salad, later we had the rhubarb cheese cake all was superb. If you're looking for a wonderful place to find top notch local food and wine with super service and beautiful atmosphere, this place on the east shore of Seneca lake is not to be missed.. The menu is eclectic and somewhat basic but ingredients are super fresh and portions are fine (I read a couple of negative reviews and was shocked at the comments - food was served fresh and warm and portions were perfect - ps I weigh 240 lbs) Kale salad, grilled cheese with stuffing, blueberry rhubarb cobbler and the awesome dry Riesling. All you need. It is "very" quiet, I think they would benefit from a little music to liven the setting. But the food and wine, service and views were GREAT. read more
