Not good at all. Orange chicken had way too much batter and too little flavor, the Pad Thai was awful - like bland spaghetti with green peppers and jalapeños, and almost no meat. Crab rangoons were not creamy and clearly had imitation crab. Even the steamed rice was lousy. The worst part, 15 minutes after eating we both had headaches that lasted all night. I give up trying to find a good Chinese place in Texas. I grew up in LA where even the mall Chinese food is better than the ones here in El Paso or in DFW where I lived for 7 years. Red Lantern had good reviews but yet again very disappointing awful food. I ordered pepper beef, Kung pao chicken and chicken fried rice. The pepper beef tasted like they just put soy sauce over it the peppers were soggy and not fresh. The fried rice was ok nothing special. The worst was the Kung pao, the chicken tasted old not even the sauce could mask the bad taste. I've noticed most places here just dump soy sauce over their food and call it a day. That's not what Chinese food is about. Travel to New York, Chicago, San Francisco or LA the food is so much better. read more

Being from the East Coast, I am used to having solidly good Chinese food available to me. When I moved to El Paso, I went on the search for a place to satisfy my craving for great Chinese food. This place would definitely be Red Lantern! The food here is delicious. They have all of the usual more Americanized dishes that you would expect at a good Chinese place, and they also spice up the menu with some more traditional and authentic choices. This lets me either stick with what I know and love, or venture outside my comfort zone, depending on my mood. Having this option is wonderful! Other things that make Red Lantern amazing include the fact that they deliver, their portion sizes are HUGE, and their prices are low. And the food is always good. Always. Some of our favorites include the General Tso's Chicken, the pan-fried pork Peking ravioli, the avocado rolls (an eggroll filled with avocado and crab!!), the Shanghai pan-fried noodles, and the green onion pancakes (I'm used to these being called "Scallion Pancakes," but they are essentially the same). The "Crispy Fried Shrimps" are also excellent-- almost like tempura shrimp! Bonus Round: They're FAST. Sesame chicken was old and chewy, not mention we got delivery and we live about 1.5 miles away, but you could tell it had been sitting for a while because it was super dry.. Also, the chicken was in huge chunks, take some time to chop it. Kung pao chicken is flavorless, reminds me of the powder seasoning mixed with water you buy at the store. The first impression I had of Red Lantern was judgement merely of the scenery. I walked in to get a takeout order. I got the 2 combo meal for 13.99 and it was A LOT of food to take to go. I can only imagine how much you are served when you stay and eat at Red Lantern I initially expected the typical Chinese takeout layout where the food is already made and under heat lamps. But, it was a small restaurant layout with a hostess and server greeting you. I was impressed with how collective and willing they were to take my order. I got the Orange chicken, Beef and broccoli, fried rice and chow mein. The food was freshly made and delicious! It definitely hit my craving spot. The fired rice surprised me the most. It was full of carrot and broccoli bits, it had lettuce in it too (which I have never had before). Yes, the food is greasy but, really, who doesn't get greasy Chinese food to hit the craving spot? I had dinner here with my family and we were underwhelmed by the lack of flavor in the food we had ordered. When it came time to pay the owner was the one who retrieved the check along with my debit card and gift card. I told her if she could exhaust the funds on the gift card first then charge the remaining balance on my debit card. She didn't even acknowledge that I had told her anything. She returned with the entire balance charged on my debit card. I told her that I had given her specific instructions on how I wanted to be charged. She said she would void the charge on my debit card and do what I had originally asked. She returns again with my gift card finally charged, but with an extra $10 charged on my debit card! She gave back the $10 in cash, but I was frustrated with the complete dismissal of what I had originally told her. We will not be coming back. Below average food and terrible service. This place is fantastic! I've never dined here, the majority of the time we order food to go or for delivery and have always had very positive experiences with them! Their food is delicious! In addition, they are very generous in their servings! We order their sweet and sour chicken and we always have left overs! With every plate you are given a side of rice. So order wisely! My favorite dish has to be their soup, their wor wonton soup is delicious! It has all meats, and also comes in a large styrofoam cup, we also always have leftovers with the soup! The soup is great, and I highly recommend this dish to anyone who loves wonton soup! As for delivery, delivery price is very inexpensive! 2$ plus of course whatever you wish to tip, but not bad! Very disappointed! I've been craving for a real Chinese food not American style. Coming from Hawaii I was spoiled with authentic Chinese food taste. When I read the review I got very excited specially when someone made a remark about it being better than San Francisco Chinatown food. Not true... Most of what I ordered we're from the Chinese menu and chefs special... The chowfun had a bitter aftertaste, pork ribs was dry, HK style chicken had a bitter aftertaste, family style tofu same same, bitter aftertaste and the salt and pepper shrimp was bleh... All in all they all tasted the same sauce base... Brown sauce full of cornstarch, some was just either a lil sweeter or spicier was for sure it's all the same basic brown sauce and it left a bitter taste in my mouth literally and figuratively. If you're not after an authentic Chinese food maybe this place will be passable to you but to me, it's a waste of money. We ordered take-out and I was very satisfied with it. That's the cool thing about Yelp: it's like online word of mouth and Red Lantern has pretty good reviews so we decided to go there for our Chinese food cravings. The restaurant was very full, which is a good sign! We had to wait for 30min to pick up or food, and you could tell everything was cooked freshly! When we arrived at home, it was still very hot. I had sesame chicken and my husband ordered [cant remember the name but it was delicious]... Both was plenty and enough to feed us both the next day. Definitely coming back! Oh, the only thing I personally didn't like was that it was too much sauce on my chicken so it almost killed the flavor of the sesame. That's why I decided to give 4 out of 5 stars. We started off with an order of spring rolls which came rather quickly and they were good, not the best but they were good. My wife ordered the Beef Pad Thai, my son the Lemon sauce chicken and I opted for General Tao Chicken. Tonight was our first, and last, experience with this place. The only edible thing in our delivery order was the canned lemonade! Wonton Soup had absolutely no flavor. General Taos Shrimp was soggy and bland, the breading was too thick, and the tails had been left on (under the breading- what a pain!). Cheap chicken that's all I'll say. I used to come here back in my earlier days with family a lot and have really fond memories of this place. Hadn't gone in years since I grew up moved away etc. First experience back my mom was trying to order she does not speak English and the lady taking her order didnt speak Spanish, she asked the lady if she could get someone that did and the lady responded that there wasn't anyone which fair I suppose if it was true. I had to order myself and between my mom trying to explain what she wanted and me being in the process of driving it was very hard but we got it done. I get there and speak Spanish to the lady at the front and she immediately replied to me in Spanish, in fact most of the staff was speaking Spanish except for one lady in the back which I'm assuming was who answered me but couldn't bother passing the phone to someone else either to be annoying or just plain racism. But we got our food and left. When we got home the sweet and sour chicken was fine a little dry on the inside and the outside was getting soggy but we did have to drive back so I don't blame them too much for that. The fried rice was as amazing as I remembered one of the best to this day in all El Paso. But then I opened the general chicken and no just no. The sauce itself was very good but the chicken was the cheapest quality it was plain black chicken almost didn't look cooked it was disgusting and I fought very hard not to throw it up. Which was surprising cuz the sweet and sour chicken was fine it looked normal. In my opinion if they used better quality chicken it'd be great. The prices are very reasonable but I would not mind in the slightest if they raised prices to have better quality the chicken as it is just wasn't good. I have eaten at this place a few times. Unfortunately there's been quite a bit of time between each time I've eaten there... I forget to ask that they not over season the food. Every time I've eaten there the food has been so spicy it was virtually inedible. Once I had a relative from the Midwest in town for vacation and we ordered takeout from here, he was so hungry he ended up having to rinse the sauce off of his food in order to eat it. I've eaten at a few places in this strip mall on occasion. (There is a wing place a few doors down from here that I took my daughter to when we first moved to El Paso and she wanted wings. The place was so filthy and disgusting she actually cried when she entered the restroom because there were flies all over the toilet seat. **See other review if interested) So, it shouldn't have surprised me when I ordered takeout from this restaurant the most recent time. First of all, I requested that they not put mushrooms in my food because I am allergic. I didn't realize until I got home that the mushrooms were not omitted even though it specifically had the note on the ticket not to put mushrooms in the dish. I called the restaurant to inform the owner about the mishap just so she knew the severity of the issue if ingredients were being used after customers were specifically informing them of food allergies. Secondly, I ordered a noodle dish which was so heavily loaded with jalapenos that it was too spicy to eat. The menu did not say that the dish was supposed to be spicy. The owner offered to replace the dish that I was allergic to but I didn't want to return all the way back to the restaurant to have the dish replaced. So I also decided to try and pallet the spicy noodle dish as well. About 25% of the way through the dish, I noticed an unusual ingredient was used in the food... It was a dead roach! I was so disgusted I was unable to eat anything for two days. Needless to say, I do not recommend this restaurant (or any of the surrounding restaurants) to anyone who is looking for edible food cooked in sanitary conditions. The food was okay here, I do not recommend coming here. The food here is not even all that. The wonton soup is absolutely disgusting, they also drench their meat in sauce. I also caught one of the workers prepping the food at a booth , while touching it with her bare hands , then touching her phone , and back to cutting the food.
