Horrible food! Let me tell you why. The Won Ton soup was in beef stock, it had substandard flavor. The pineapple pork was hard and undercooked, unfortunately. The Hong Kong chicken was dried-out and had a sauce which tasted like Heinz ketchup. The white rice and fried rice was undercooked because it had a hard bite and broke-up when I was chewing on it. Unbelievable! As for the Chow Fun, the noodles were ok, but the beef was thin and hard. Probably old meat. The onion pancake tasted ok though, it was probably the best of what I ordered. I'm really saddened about the quality of Chinese food we have here in El Paso. I feel for people who don't know what good Chinese food tastes like. If I could, I would give this restaurant no stars. The hot and sour soup was the most strange but most done lately unexpected treat of the entire meal. We also ordered the spicy garlic sauce and come Powell sauce on the side for the fried tofu in a plant which was perfectly breaded in season. I would recommend the Mongolian beef, it is delicious. That is my favorite dish there. And the employees are very nice.

Checked out this place last night, we had a good experience with the staff, the food was ok, the concern was a customer escalation that occurred in front of our table with a guest who stated the staff forgot to add an item to his order and drove all the way back to Red Lantern to pick up the missing item. Instead of apologizing and making it right the staff member essentially called him a liar, sparking him to go back home again and return everything. When he brought everything back, surprise the item was not there, meanwhile the owner sat at the back table observe the entire wrong done to this poor guy. Overall we enjoyed ourselves, this issue could have been remedied immediately, instead the establishment lost the sale, and took a loss for the food, over an item that probably ended up in another patrons bag. Shrimp were plain battered and really thick batter but the soup was good. I ordered the red lantern noodles with shrimp and it was really tasty, shrimp were very tasty and a large portion. My son ordered the sesame chicken which he didnt like, our waitress was super nice and took it back. He ordered the golden wings which he did like. Good go-to chinese food in Eastside EP!!! Really reminds me of places here in California. Fish Fillet with green onion and ginger: AMAZING!!!! My favorite out of our orders!! I would so go here just for this dish! SO GOODDDDDD...makes my mouth water just thinking about it. Honey Walnut Chicken: Stick with the shrimp for this dish. Not the same with chicken, but it's doable if you don't like seafood or shrimp! Won ton soup: NONONO. The won ton was HARD...definitely over cooked. I couldn't even eat it. The soup is not that great either. Couldn't even eat that. Not a good thing here. Chow Fun: Pretty good. I am always a fan of chow fun! I admit, I'm not the best at judging this dish...only because I'm a sucker for large rice noodles with soy sauce. Get this if you haven't tried it yet! Not all Chinese restaurants have this. I was recommended this restaurant by many school friends, but since it's a bit far, I didn't make it out there until today. I brought my sister & my dad & I'm glad I was able to take them to a good Asian restaurant in El Paso. We ordered my all-time Chinese dish- Honey Walnut Prawns (fried shrimp in a myo & honey sauce). This restaurant makes it better than other places I've been to. The shrimps were tasty & jumbo-sized! We also ordered the steamed fish w/ ginger & (green) onion fish which was good, but not as good as the shrimp. The Seafood hot pot w/tofu was also delicious. The prices were reasonable & the Chinese lady was very courteous and the service provided by her was really good. The Hispanic girls gave mediocre service. The decor was also nice & the whole place, even the bathroom, was clean & neat. The only con I found was the distance from my place & I got lost going there because I forgot to turn right onto Zaragoza and kept going north on George Dieter -_- They apparently opened another place on 1501 Yandell called "Sam's Chinese Restaurant" so I'll probably try that place next time since it's closer to my apartment/ school. My family and I have never received anything but excellent quality, value and service from this gem of an eastside restaurant. Brenda, the woman who cuts my hair, turned me on to this place; she mentioned that she, also, was picky about restaurants but she had nothing but good things to say about Red Lantern. So I had to check it out--that was 6 months ago. Being a foodie, I know quality food and will gladly spend the extra dough to get good food. But you don't have to do that here; in fact, you can feed a family of four for $14 and still have leftovers. They provide generous portions of freshly prepared dishes at light-speed. We usually have our food within 7-10 minutes of ordering. They serve hot tea in mini-teapots, they have a family-style War Wonton(soup for four or five) which you MUST try, lettuce wraps and other Chinese food staples. The curry hot pot is very good, as are the steamed mussles. Really, this IS the best Chinese food in El Paso, hands down(sorry other place on Yandell). I used to be a big fan of that 'other place on Yandell St.' but this is simply better and SO inexpensive for the quality you get. The owners are wonderful human beings and treat their guests like friends; the staff is always on-point, friendly and always deserving of a healthy tip with the excellent service they provide. I'll just jump the main points. I ordered the Pad Thai with shrimp, and Mongolian Chicken, and both were so bad that we only took a couple of bites, and threw the containers away. They give you larger portions, so it was such a waste. I get that we're right on the border, but adding Jalapeño slices to any Asian cuisine is just not right. The jalapeño peppers just took over the Pad Thai, which had tons of mini shrimp that were rubbery and basically had no flavor outside of the jalapeño taste. It's the tiny frozen shrimp that you can buy in a big bag in the frozen section at a Walmart. Very cheap. If you are a Pad Thai lover, do not order this! The Mongolian chicken had lots of bell peppers, chicken pieces, sauce, and mushrooms, I think. Let's not forget Red Lantern's favorite accoutrement, jalapeño pepper slices. Unfortunately, all we could taste were the jalapeño pepper slices. Yes, again with the jalapeño pepper slices. This place is almost like a Chinese-Mexican fusion restaurant. If you like that sort of thing, great. Even if I could get past the Jalapeño fetish this place has, the food on its own is just isn't worth the trip. But Red Lantern shouldn't advertise themselves as a Chinese restaurant because patrons who are expecting authentic, quality Chinese cuisine are and will be greatly disappointed. We've given Red Lantern a second and last shot. High points - large servings and comparable prices. This is a standard Chinese (American-Texan) restaurant. Don't expect surprises but the food is solidly satisfying. Try the scallion pancake as most "chain" Chinese joints don't serve it and it's nice. Cook likes to add jalapenos to many dishes, so ask for mild if necessary. You won't leave hungry. read more

Quiet and comfortable place that serves Chinese food. The place was clean and music was soft enough to allow for conversation. We visited on a Wednesday night and we got sat down right away. We ordered the spring rolls and crab rangoons but both were bland. The rangoons were hard and had no crab meat. For the main dishes We ordered the Black mushrooms with assorted veggies and the General Tao's beef w white rice plates. The General Tao's beef was tough; almost beef jerky-like. The sauce was ok but it was not spicy at all. The black mushrooms were tasty but again not impressive. These were sautéed in a dark sauce and laid atop steamed vegetables. Not worth the price, in my opinion. Service was good but a bit slow considering the he place was not full and the women's bathroom was dirty as well. I'm sure n no rich to return. Their mapo tofu was a sad caricature of what it should be.. it didn't taste bad, it just wasn't mapo tofu.
