I bookmarked this place after reading about their amazing fries in TOC's "101 Things to Eat" annual list. After my beloved 'Doggie Diner' on Armitage closed its doors, I was in a desperate search to find a replacement for hot, greasy, fresh-cut fries. I went at 2am with my girlfriend and her friend. We got three hotdogs and a pound of fried shrimp and a pink lemonade. My girlfriend's friend paid. We ate in the car. It was the best part of my week. Two more things- 1) Those shrimps are snappy in the hot sauce. 2) I figured it out, whether its Phil's Last Stand or Red Hot Ranch or Jim's Original- the best fast food spots have pink lemonade available. After my 3rd visit.... I ordered a hot dog, fries and a Dr. Pepper to go... to eat in my vehicle....As I am eating the wonderful hand cut fries... Then all of a sudden, I notice everything is sopping wet!?!? Why? What's going on here?! .... When I put my straw in on a 45 degree angle, it went right through the very lower side of the Styrofoam cup and all over the place.... on my console, on the hot dog, fries and finally on my clothes.... HELLO! ....... Styrofoam cups are NOT meant for straws to be inserted in them!......... Because accidents just like this can happen!........ Styrofoam is great for hot coffee but NOT for a cola that you will be putting a straw into and probing around!! Red Hot Ranch is a great choice, open til 4am during the week and 5am during the weekend. This is a no frills place with only a stand-only counter inside and 4 picnic style tables outside. The menu is similarly sparse - they do hot dogs (single and double), polish, fresh cut fries, and french fried shrimp. Get cheese on the side if you want (and I highly recommend that you do). Hot dogs are from Vienna and they have that satisfying snap to them as you bite into them. They're rolled up with an order of fries and are of the depression dog variety. Nothing but a good hotdog, although the bun does get a bit mashed up when it gets rolled up. Not a big deal. The fries are great, get 'em with the cheese. They're fresh cut and double-fried. Crisp on the outside, fluffy on the inside. These aren't really fancy fries - they're just good fresh cut fries that taste great and quite possibly my favorite variety in the city; they're the right thickness too. Now to the star of the place; french fried shrimp. Tails are removed, AND they're de-veined! They have a light breading which results in a fried shrimp that isn't overly greasy. They're some of the best I've had. Limited menu, limited seating, but great food. For a hot dog joint, what else do you need? A later night minimalist eatery with limited but effective options to kill your hunger. I base this review on my sampling of every single menu item, which includes the hot dog, all beef polish, fried shrimp, and fries. I review each item in the order I believe they should be ranked. The fries are cut with the expertise of a rabbi at his 1000th bris. Not sure of the oil used, but overall the fries are the bomb! They are also a deal because you can get them for used land mine prices. And they won't blow up innocent civilians decades later like all those mines we left in Southeast Asia. The shrimp are also the bomb (no tail shell!), but at 17 bucks a pound (pre-cook) we are talking drone prices. As in real life, if you are trying kill your hunger but want to do so with a surgical precision you call the drones. Just be careful with mass weddings cause some of the women and children might be kosher and might not appreciate the high-priced gesture. The polish is like a 38 special. It can get the job done of killing your hunger, but is kind of out-moded in today's Chicago late night food scene. I'd go for the sausage if you're in the mood to kill your hunger using something with 70's classic nostalgia. It'll give you a gunshot pop, but no bomb boom. The hot dog is like a knife. The cheapest option, but it can kill your hunger if you don't mind the messiness. But if your foe is serious, you might NOT wanna bring a knife to a gun fight. read more

My new favorite hot dog join. The hot dogs are natural casing vienna beef dogs, so they're nice and snappy. Topped with a well steamed bun, onions, relish, and mustard, the dog is everything a Chicago dog should be. The fries are fresh cut and twice fried, exactly as proper french fries should be. I didn't love it. Not sure what the big deal is. The food was just ok, It was also really sloppy which wouldn't matter if also it tasted great but sloppy just doesn't fly with mediocrity. We waited a really long time for it, there were only two people in line in front of us. Really just not impressed. I used to come here a lot more in previous years when I had friends living in the area and still find myself coming back for the double dog and fries for 4th meal. I got kinda turned off a year ago when I thought it was a genius idea to come for dinner. My roommate and I had a dog/fries each and we split the shrimp but it was very subpar. Prolly because we were sober. I came back tonight because I was in the area around 9:30 PM and got a half pound of shrimp with the spicy cocktail sauce, and was pleasantly surprised how good it was compared to a year ago! My order came with 9-10 jumbo shrimp and was def enough for a late dinner. I'll admit I thought 9 dollars for solo shrimp was a bit steep, but the quality was there! Nice and crisp outside with bits of potato skin left on, soft and warm inside. The fried shrimp are tasty too, much meatier than Lawerence's. And that's the whole menu, right there. Prices have gone up a quarter in recent weeks (which they should when gas costs $5 a gallon) but this is still solid, fast, cheap tasty food that is available from 10:30 am until late (3am on weekends, maybe later?). Awesome hot dog! It's the other Chicago style - sweet relish and mustard. I used to drive all the way to Gene & Judes to get one, and imagine my surprise and delight to find Red Hot Ranch. For $2.95 for a hot dog with fries, this is a steal for Logan Square. The hot dog is steamed and snappy, the relish and mustard are perfect, and the fries are double fried goodness. This is a five star dog. I took one star away because I wasn't a fan of their fried shrimp. The breading is really thick and heavy with too many bread crumbs, it overwhelmed the shrimp.
