I grew up in the Quad Cities and moved to Chicago (the city, not Chicagoland) 3 yrs ago. I was recently on a date with a boring, closed minded, unworldly guy from the burbs who asked me if Iowa even had any good sushi. It pained me to not roll my eyes. Red Ginger is a (relatively) quick and conveniently located lunch place. I'm not sure if it's techinically in Davenport or Bettendorf but being on Middle Road along the border of the two cities and so close to I-74 makes this a common place to meet friends for a workday lunch. I can never decide what I want so I usually get the Bento Box and I get a little bit everything: soup, small appetizer, fried rice, a roll of sushi (pick from six options), and a small lunch entree (I always get Chicken Teriyaki). For me, that's a lot of food for lunch. I usually eat the soup, appetizer, and sushi roll and take the fried rice and lunch entree to go for a meal later. :) Considering I can get two meals out of the Bento Box lunch the (~$9 + tip) price is very reasonable especially for sushi!. The servers are OK, the male (Tucker?) can be a little overly friendly/casual while the females can be a little standoffish but I wouldn't say it's a detriment to this restaurant. The ambiance is peaceful and elegant although a little on the dark side but not in a bad way. I believe Red Ginger is also popular for dinner but I haven't been here for dinner yet. I like the fresh, healthy, flavorful food they have at Red Ginger. read more

Went for lunch with my mother. She's new to Japanese/Sushi joints. I have tried a few while living in the Chicago area - and some other local QC ones. I don't care what the food tastes like - if I get bad service, I never go back to a restaurant. I have had some "not so great" service in my life but never have I ever NOT left a tip for it until my trip to Red Ginger. She wouldn't answer any of my mother's questions about the menu (that I could not answer). She practically threw our miso and salad on the table. My mom, in excitement, says "Oh, what's this?!" She just quips "it comes with it" and walked away. It never got any better - including throwing our forks on the table. She also walked about the restaurant while waiting on others and helping other customers pay at the register - WHILE ON HER CELL PHONE. My hibachi chicken was mediocre and I didn't care for the miso. My salad was a bunch of rusty pieces of iceburg. I so deeply wanted to ask for another waitress but I didn't. I won't be back. There are plenty of other places I can go - or even wait until my next trip to a bigger city. I'm good. read more

Fairly good sushi - I will admit I've been spoiled by better sushi places on the coast, but it is Iowa. Staff was friendly and the food was served in good time, with many apologies for the one dish that took the longest to cook. We will likely go back as hubby and I both love sushi. read more

I have been to this establishment several times with other ladies at lunch time and enjoyed the bento box. I convinced my husband to go for dinner thinking he'd enjoy the seafood and boy was that a mistake! Our dinner came before the soup and salad which we sent back until we got those and when out entrees did come the lobster was dry and very cold. Vivian our waitress was not a very happy person and it seemed as if we were inconveniencing her. Vivian's attitude was bitter and she was a very unhappy person. You would think that a waitress knows that her tip depends on her service. I hope for her sake that this was one time occurrence! I don't think I'll go back. read more

Great atmosphere for a casual date or couple. Took my very Midwestern baby boomer parents here for their first ever sushi experience and they loved it- they are sushi converts! Never been to Japan so I can't comment on the "authenticity" but I know good & fresh food when I taste it. My roommates and I agree that our favorite creation is the "Red Ginger Roll." read more

Me and my brother were very excited to eat here. Our mom had given us giftcards to use and I came back to town from Iowa City to eat here with my brother. The food was very good and had a great atmosphere. We went to pay with the 40 dollars in so called "giftcards" but the hostess told us we could only use one per person... So why the hell do you call them giftcards if you can't use them?! It was basically just a 5 dollars off your meal coupon. Complete BS.. Now they have to explain to the waitress why she didn't get a tip.. read more

i have been eating Sushi since 1985, i have been to Japan and can order in Japanese. I eat it all the time . When i called the Red Ginger Sushi Bar , i asked if they had a Japanese Sushi Chef, the owner /Manager said yes , absolutely. i BELIEVED HER ?! When i got there and we did go out of our way for this disaster , i asked the Sushi Chef a few questions, he looked scared and pointed to the menu. i asked him where in JAPAN he was from , he was from CHINA REALLY? If the owner /Manager lies about something like this , what do you think they are doing to your food ?...SHUSH I requires specific knowledge that takes years to acquire, like spotting parasites or diseases that the fish may have. This poor excuse for a restaurant is an insult to the Japanese culture and they should be slingin chowmein at a drive through. read more

Second time I have tried Red Ginger, not impressed. There was one other couple in the restaurant besides us and it was slow and empty. I went because I had received a GC for Xmas. Our waitress seemed annoyed and was more interested sitting back at the bar and watching TV than serving us. She was short and swift. She, herself was short, wore a baseball cap and had short dark hair, middle age. Not very informed on the menu and its options when asked. She seemed tired and bored. The food was not that great, most choices had eel. I do like eel but not many options on variety otherwise. The waitress bought us one bowl of soup and one bowl of salad which we did not know came with our meal. She quickly and abruptly put them on our table and said your meal comes with soup and salad.....Okay how do you share one bowl of soup with one spoon??? The salad we tried to share and wasnt given another plate and it fell all over the table using chop sticks. Common sense is bring another plate for the salad for the customer. I asked for a sushi sampler plate with our order and she bought me a sashimi sampler. It really wasn't rocket science. I wont be back and if I do get a GC I will give it away, not worth my time.Much better options in Bettendorf and Iowa City. read more

Oh my god, this is a die for place. Love the service. Cute waiter. Well I went today for lunch. Usually never get out. More of a drive-thru person. And usually take the good home and eat it alone while watching Modern Family. My sister convinced me to get out of the house for some time. Along with my mom and sister, choose to dine her for lunch. I ordered the bento box, I expected a small portion due to my past experience with Osaka. But this was just great. They have this delightful salad and miso soup. It was just delicious. That's not even the best part... Then our food arrived. Quick waiting time, much more faster than most places. The plating just amazed me. True Japanese here. Enjoyed ever single bite. Loved the chicken tempura on the side alone with the spring-roll. The sushi was perfectly crafted. The sushi was just perfect much better than at Osaka. The dipping sauces just OMG. Thinking about them make my mouth water. And on top of all that was just a cute waiter. It's been two hours since I went. Starting to miss it already. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it's in Bettendorf and not in Moline. They had one but they closed it down. If I could go everyday here. I'll be back again next week. read more
