There really isn't much going on in the Western Sydney Japanese scene. Found this place online…read moreafter doing a search for ramen places in Parramatta. I was a bit nervous on the drive there and went in with low expectations. The restaurant is very small and had elements of a typical Japanese restaurant set up. I ordered the katsu chicken ramen an shared the magma roll. The katsu chicken wasn't your normal golden brown coloured exterior but nevertheless tasted really good. I thoroughly enjoyed the ramen after I heaped on some chilli flakes. This isn't readily available on the table so don't forget to ask if you're a fan. The soup was pretty delicious and I almost drank my bowl dry. The magma roll was a bit disappointing though. Not as hot as I expected. Having salmon and canned tuna pieces together probably isn't the best idea either. The tuna definitely out ways the salmon even though it's the salmon you really want to task. Overall a great place for a ramen fix if you are ever in western sydney.

They're many Japanese restaurant contenders in my area but this tiny place remains me of alot of gems we visited in Japan. So if they're busy you might find it hard to get seating, but takeaway option still available. The menu is basic but covers the whole range: sushi, sashimi, ramens, udons, tempuras, bentos, entrees etc. I go here so often (eat in or takeaway) because everytime I order it's like ordering for the first time. the consistency doesn't drop just because you're a regular, which I've had with many other restaurants before. The quality is awesome, especially for such a small restaurant. I've been visiting this place since it first opened and been a loyal fan since. FYI they do open on Sundays now so don't be deterred!

While the sushi have some room for improvement and the service was a little messy that we kept needing to ask for dish or chopsticks or cups, the ramen was cooked to perfection and for that I will give them all the stars.

Japanese ramen is my newest obsession btw. The location is on Smith Street a mere 5 minute walk from the Parramatta train station for those worries about accessibility. I've also noticed street parking a few blocks away. I had the pork pot stickers to start and they were not the typical fried ones you'd get around town. These were steamed and served in a bath of a light soy sauce mixture and greens. Quite tasteful and perfect for folks like me with a shellfish allergy who worry about cross contamination of deep fried foods. I followed this up with the main event a bowl of the ramen with pork broth. I'm not sure which one I ordered but three varieties were on order miso, soya and salt. I'd imagine they taste pretty similar but don't quote me there. The broth was a thick, opaque medley of flavors and came with sesame seeds, seaweed, green onions, bean sprouts and roast pork loin. This broth normally comes with mushrooms (which I don't like) and corn (which while expected wasn't included). I believe this place is a chain but I'd definitely come here again when craving ramen. The service was great with a friendly and attentive wait staff welcoming all patrons with a friendly Japanese greeting. This place offers take away but I'd recommend sitting down when you have the time to savor the entire experience. For those in search of a quick treat they offer $3.50 to go sushi rolls. There are also sushi chefs available behind the bar turning out some beautiful tasty looking sushi dishes. Large offering of Japanese and Korean wines and beer on offer for those in need of a drink after a long day.

We didn't want to eat too much because we had dinner plans that was coming up soon. The ambiance is soothing especially when sitting at the long, curved counter table. High ceilings and windows going almost all the way around created a seemingly wide open area in what really wasn't that big. We sat at the counter after we were greeted. A conveyor belt ran in front carrying several dishes. Prices were high even after considering the currency exchange. There was nothing that wowed me. It was okay but nothing special. Certainly not enough to warrant the high price. We tried salmon and California roll. Not bad, tasted good, that's all I can say. We tried a few more then decided to cut out. No need to spend more if we weren't feeling it. Later that evening we passed by and the place was packed. People getting off from work getting their dinner before heading home. It made me wonder if our taste buds were off. Hopefully I will come back to give it another try. See if I feel the same then.

We arrived early 11:30am for a noon lunch but no problems. We were asked if we would like the chefs to start our lunch early. It was windy and miserable outside so I opted for the warmed sake. It was fine but we did try some nicer sake at the end of the meal. Our plates came out in a timely manner. I think due to the waitress paying attention to how quickly we were eating. The restaurant was filled by noon and when a large group arrived at the door they had to make a decision to find somewhere else to eat. All of our food was great and we even opted to pay for a second plate. The bento boxes and other lunch time meals looked good too.I also liked the cocktail with lychee. There are quite a few eating places within a short walk of this place and they were also very busy.

Umaya happens to be around the corner from a church I was visiting in sydney and I came here frequently. I had the karage don and the katsu don bowls and they were both awesome! Super solid karage, fresh, crunchy and tender and the sauces and kewpie mayo they use is great. The katsu don bowl was also exactly as i expected it. I may not be happy about the price if i were paying AUD but paying USD it was moreeee than fair. The quality was very consistent and the service was great. Definitely a go to place if you're ever in the outskirts of sydney australia!
