It used to be superb value but unfortunately covid took the better of them. At $3 a plate with awesome quality, this place can't be faulted. Unfortunately now at $3.9 for a plate and the things are clearly less fresh it becomes a harder sell. (Just look at that tuna photo...) All in all however I'm still happy to come for my sushi fix. I choo choo choose you Sushi Rio has my favourite sushi train! I was here during the hectic lunch hour rush around 1245pm on a Wednesday afternoon. I was seated immediately just seconds after putting my name down on the list. WIN! The vibe of the whole place was rocking. Sushi Masters doing their thing, servers running back and forth, typical business men next to me shooting the breeze, couples out on a lunch date and here's me... One hungry, hungry hippo. FRESH * FRESH * FRESH * FRESH *FRESH If there's one thing you need to know about Sushi Rio, everything is so FRESH!! I ordered a few items off the menu, but the rest I pulled off the train. It seemed like almost every 15mins there was a new plate of different varieties being placed on the train. After 9 plates, I had to finish off with one more Salmon Sushi. Came here to avoid the pouring rain and to try out sushi related dishes with my friend and her family members. Open concept restaurant with modern style interior design was definitely an inviting place to be at. Was given a seat at the bar area where there are different sushis on covered plates on conveyer belts. Felt a little too full from the soft-serve and gelato hop that I only tried three types of sushis (forgot what is what). I tried the uni (sea urchin). You need to special order for that. Unfortunately, it didn't deliver the fresh uni taste and it was a little bitter. The rice wasn't too chewy or colder instead (which might make a difference in the taste). Tried probably the minced octopus one. That one was flavorful as there was a hint of condiments on it. The salmon sushi wasn't that great either. Price wise, I couldn't comment on it as I wasn't paying the bill. Location was extremely accessible from Darling Quarter. On the menu, I also noticed quite a number of sushi varieties. Might have to give this place another try on an empty stomach the next time round. read more

Toot Toot, all aboard! I'm a sushi doofus. I managed to derail the carriages of cuisine of this fine establishment, by thinking I was smarter than I was. Me Dan, Me know how to eat the sushi! So my pal and I started removing plates from the train, as you do. The good ones, the prawn, the salmon, and those fried corn fitter things lathered in mayo, top stuff.... as we are doing so, I am checking off the bingo card with what we've had "salmon roll w/ avocado" tick!, "Tuna" tick "crumbed prawn" tick, "chicken teriyaki" tick! I yell out bingo and my waitress comes and takes the card. I feel chuffed that they accepted my "honesty principle" and I proceed to the register to pay... "Oh!" the cashier says, "you not ordering?" Ummm no I just had 12 plates of fun why would I want anymore? "Ohhhhh" she exclaims, "not ordering..." and I catch eyes with my waitress whose communicating with a chef, and then the dots connect, and it's a picture of a train wreck... Cancel I yell out. Cancel! Cancel! "Cancel Cancel", my waitress says back to me with a confused smile. Yes. Cancel. Cancel. With these words I ruined Thomas' life. I think she got it, well I hope she did, having the Sushi Sensai recreate the 12 dishes I just ate would've been an utter farce, especially when I refused to pay for it. So yeah. I'm a sushi doofus. They count the plates. They explained this to me on the way out like I was a dumbass (cos I am dumbass). But they did it with good humour and a smile, so I'm ok with the culinary education. I love this place! $3 plates, all day, even for dinner! Where else can you find a place like this in Sydney? Anyway, this is a sushi train place but you can sit at the tables and order off the menu. When I go, i always order takoyaki, crab claws and teriyaki salmon off the menu. Don't wait for them to come around on the train, as they wont. Order any hot food from the waitress using the paper and the pen located on the sushi train. I also always order the Lychee Calypso (i think that's what it's called). It is a blended ice drink. I always eat the seaweed salad (YUM), and any salmon or kingfish sushi. I love it and it tastes great. It is an "in and out" kinda restaurant. Go there, eat (we usually eat within half an hour) and then you're done! My partner and I spend $40 everytime we come here. 10 plates between the two of us, plus drinks. It's a quick and easy sushi place to come to after work (if you work in the city) and we always seem to find parking on Sussex street after work around 6pm. Gotta love sushi train. And its a great thing that the dodgy sushi trains from over 5 years ago are now gone and replaced with brand spanking new ones. The Group that operates Sushi Hotaru (The Galeries) also do Sushi Rio and this is a great lunch-time sushi train option if you work in the area. The set-up is pretty much identical to Sushi Hotaru and the sushi plates are quite yummy and consistent. I love the takoyaki (octopus balls) and can eat plates of them if allowed. You can also order from the menu if so inclined. I once saw a guy eating teriyaki chicken, and it looked delicious! A particularly good sushi train and they do split bills, which tops it off. I wouldn't be surprised if this is the most affordable sushi train in Sydney. Lucky you if you work nearby! Venue Classic sushi train, usually quite busy, but it still feels personal. They also have a couple of tables available - practical if you're in a company of more than 2 people. Food Okay, we have to take the price/quality ratio into account here. For the price ($3 per plate) it tastes amazing. Take the opportunity to order directly from the kitchen on the form at the table - you'll see them make your dish if you're sitting at the counter. The vegetable tempura is to die for! However, the sashimi might not have that incredibly smooth texture like more upper-end restaurants, but it is still very good! Another minus is the fact that they're not licensed for alcohol, could be a deal breaker on say, a Friday night. Service It can take a while to get your order through when they're busy - otherwise lovely staff! A big plus that they split bills and that the waiting time is never long (maximum 10 minutes in my experience). read more

Walk past this place all the time. Keep seeing their all day special of "all plates $3". My wife and I literally tried two plates before we left. The quality was so so, the serving sizes were small, the assortment of meats used was terrible, it was pretty much only terrible chicken, chicken schnitzle, Salmon and a few prawn dishes going around the train, there were no tuna, fatty China belly, squid, octopus, scallops, fish eggs, abalone ect making the rounds. They were on the menu and since then my brother said its only worth it if you order the things not on the train, but at such a busy place churning out western abominations of so called "Japanese food" I didn't want to waste anymore time. This place is good if you learnt all your Japanese food from American Movies and a person who has never been to Japan or knows what proper Japanese food is, or if you are someone that goes to a Chinese restaurant and only eats fried rice with lemon chicken. @ $3 a plate it is still too much. I didn't even bother taking photos as nothing was really worth photographing. $3.50 a plate, $6.80 for salmon sashimi with 8 pieces. Cheap and great value for money. On top of that, my friend and I tried the soft shell crab roll and taco version. It is to die for! They have great communication so you won't wait for long, 5 minutes at best. Highly recommend for people who enjoy casual lunches or dinners. Wanted to go to Home Thai, but the line was so long we ended up coming here. A nice system of ordering on the iPad or taking off the conveyor belt. However, my iPad was having difficulties at first so a waitress had to come restart the program. I ordered the salmon and avocado roll which was simple but satisfying. The rainbow roll was also good. The salmon roll with onion had a little too much mayo for my liking. Finally, the spring rolls took a bit to get out but were a nice change from all the sushi. All the plates were $3.50, so very reasonable. A nice quick place for sushi. read more

Cheap and pleasant. Don't compare it with those sushi stores that are more expensive. It is just a convenient one which offers quick and nice sushi service. Although it's cheap, only $3 for all sushi, there are still a lot of sushi or rolls that you can choose. The tastes are not bad, and it gives office staffs a good place to grab a quick lunch. read more

Went on a Saturday night instead of going to our normal sushi train restaurant about a block away, Makoto Sushi Bar, which is a 5 Star every time! We wanted to try something different and DIFFERENT it was! The variety of rolls was lacking (mostly chicken, salmon, shrimp), the freshness of the vegetables (brown avocados, browning lettuce, etc) was non existent, and the MAYO WAS ON 90% of the rolls! The service was okay, music was acceptable, and the standard $3 per roll is nice. With that said, we will not return, especially after seeing one of the guys preparing sushi sneeze downward toward the counter level and not in his shoulder or away from the food. YUCK! Sushi Rio - Japanese Near Me - Sydney, NSW

I'm happy to say that Sushi Rio has made it through the wilderness and is now back at #1 on my list of favourite sushi trains. I've been back several times since my last review and I haven't had any tummy trouble so I'm going to assume they were just going through a rough patch with some new chefs or a malfunctioning refrigerator or something. Forgive and forget. The quality of the sushi has been restored to its former glory and the menu is now virtually identical to that of Sushi Hotaru - ie the variety is huge. Sushi Hotaru has been demoted to my second favourite sushi train, even though I still think the decor there is cooler. In truth, the only reason Sushi Rio takes the top spot is that it offers broccoli with sesame mayo, whereas Sushi Hotaru only offers broccoli with wasabi mayo, and I hate wasabi mayo (or wasabi anything). You may ask why I don't just ask the staff at Sushi Hotaru to put sesame mayo on my broccoli instead of wasabi mayo, so I can eat at Sushi Hotaru and have the best of both worlds (ie cool decor AND non-wasabi-mayo'd broccoli). But have you ever tried asking for changes to a menu item at a Japanese restaurant? It is nigh on impossible. Not only will you completely stress your waitress out and tempt her into committing seppuku, but in 99.9% of cases you will end up with the very menu item you were trying to change, sans your requested changes. Apart from the broccoli dish, here is the stuff I almost always order or pick off the train: - spicy grilled salmon nigiri; - egg salad gunkan; - hand roll of some description (all of them are good); and - tuna and avocado roll - but only because it fills me up and makes my $15 worthwhile. read more

It's a great revolving sushi place. It was crowded with a lunch rush but cleared out fast. The wait was short and the staff were very nice. The plates are cheap at $3 and was of good quality. The sushi seemed fresh and it was cool was to watch them make the sushi right in front of you. I recommend the spicy grilled salmon and the scallops. read more

Standard fare sushi. The quality reminds me of packaged sushi in supermarkets. Prices are reasonable though. Seating is not uncomfortable, but the settings do not make for conversations or large groups. If you want a place to sit down for mediocre sushi, this is the place to be. I absolutely love Sushi!! Sushi Rio is probably the best sushi train in Sydney IMO. Ingredients are fresh, huge variety of sushi on the train (rare to find in most sushi trains) and really friendly staff. First visited this place a while ago with my brother, and he loved it. So I decided to take my mates for a saturday lunch and they enjoyed the food immensely. I have to give myself a pat on the back for a cracker of a choice...
