I love, love, love Red Dragon in Mill Valley and San Rafael. What I love is the incentives. I love how friendly the staff are and how even though I'm so self conscious and everyone is kind and patient. They sometimes have guest teachers which is so cool! I love everything Marin! I knew I had a meeting later in Marin so I really wanted to try this studio. It was just really nice people from the front desk, to the classmates. I appreciate the teacher who was gentle but very clear on the instructions for this hot yoga class. The only mistake was one I made myself... I stood by the door and got drafts every time someone went for water... if you like it hot like I do go to back corner. I will return soon and want to try the San Rafael location also. read more

I had been going to Red Dragon since 2015. Stefanie the owner is one of the most toxic people I have ever met. The teachers and the community are wonderful and I will really miss them but Stefanie I suspect has a borderline personality disorder. When I confronted her on her rudeness to a fellow yoga member and good friend and one of the many people I had introduced to Red Dragon - Stefanie decided it was easier to just terminate my membership rather than take onboard my constructive criticism. Sadly this is Stefanie's MO when things don't go her way and many other members and or instructors have either left or had their memberships cancelled. I have now joined NowPower Yoga in Corte Madera run by the delightful Susan Hauser - I highly recommend it ! Clean ( they have cleaners come in every day unlike Red Dragon !) with infra- red heat which is so much better for you than HVAC and it's a beautiful large studio with an awesome community most importantly Zero TOXICITY from leadership / staff! read more

I love this studio so much - outside of my boyfriend and my dog, Jill and Ed are the two beings I'm thrilled to see first thing in the morning. They bring so much presence, humor and humanity to the Power Yoga practices they lead. Yes, the room is *hot* and yes, it's a sweaty, challenging flow, and yes, there goes your gorgeous blowout. But it's so worth it. After only six weeks I'm feeling more flexible and more connected to my breath, and I'm recovering the strength and muscles I'd lost when I stopped doing ridiculously hard, ridiculously taxing HIIT workouts. The music is great, the lighting could be a little lower but really it's fine - and once you get into the flow, nothing matters. I also love that they don't physically push me too much to find my "edge" - a regrettable tendency from my past that my hips and hamstrings will never let me forget. Ouch. The moment that reinforced my love for this studio; I have to take this week off from hot sweaty yoga, so I tried a different, quite popular, not-hot Marin yoga studio this morning. It was super run-of-the-mill and just not the grounding, exhilarating, consciousness-opening experience that I get at Red Dragon. Oh! Also, Red Dragon is so affordable if you do the auto-membership thing, the street parking is abundant, and they always have the cutest dogs lying around waiting for belly rubs. Love this place so much! I have always loved yoga but didn't know a good studio in Marin. I feel like a lot of the studios can be intimidating or overly crowded. Let me start by saying that I have been attending yoga at the Red Dragon Yoga in Mill Valley for two weeks now.  The only time I have available is the 10am classes each morning.  Today the owner was teaching the class and her name is Stephanie Schreiber and this person really drove me crazy today.  Halfway into the class while doing our yoga poses, she decided to talk to us like we were a bunch of children.  She said, "this place is not a storage and you cannot store your belongings here!".  This class is also hot yoga, and she continuously opens the widows four times all the way to let in the cold air in during our practice.  So, I moved away from the window because I'm attending hot yoga class, not cold one.  During the floor series, and she opens the window fully letting the cold air come in once again, and throwing dirty yoga mats out the window while she is teaching at the same time! This time I ask her to please only open the window a little bit because its cold.  She turns to me and says, "If you don't like it, then don't Come!!"  with a very raised voice and caught the attention of everyone in the room.  I was shocked! As a business owner myself, I think it's very rude to talk to a paying customer this way!  I cannot believe what I heard! I don't like how this "teacher" treats her students in a yoga class! I will never attend a class if she is instructing it again.  In my experience with Red Dragon it always appeared everyone was appreciated and respected.  In this instance I felt I was singled out.  I happen to be the only Asian person in the class. I enjoy my practice at red dragon until today, this owner is lucky to have all these great teachers, but the owner herself, in my very own experience and opinion, avoid her. read more

I LOVE red dragon!! I'm a big fan of hot yoga & Bikram, and this is the only yoga studio I've been able to be consistent with. The Locations of the studios couldn't be more ideal for me, I have one next to my house, and one next to my office. Every single teacher I've had at Red Dragon is so incredible, I love to mix up the classes because they all have their own unique touches they bring that create a very well rounded experience. They're all very knowledgeable on body mechanics and are always assisting in a gentle way to help me get the most out of my time there. I prefer the Mill Valley location, personally. I like the small dark cozy room. This yoga studio feels more intimate to me. The San Rafael one is also great, but for me it has more of a commercial feel to it, and the yoga room is huge, it holds a lot of people and the street facing windows keep it very bright. I do like to mix up the locations, but i especially want to show the Mill Valley some love Bc it's a great place! ... and I have never noticed a foul smell there, as I read in some other reviews. read more

Instructors: I've been to several different instructors, and they run the gamut from one we call the "yoga nazi", whose pacing seems way too fast and who actually berates students in the class ... to our favorite, who actually makes us all laugh and really seems to get the "chill" aspect of yoga. All seem quite competent, though - just very different styles. Room: Beware of the U-shaped heating-vent system on the ceiling! It's hard to get out of the direct path of the heat, but many instructors do occasionally crack open the windows at the back for a few seconds. (Beware of she who doesn't crack the window until the temperature reaches 115 degress (not exaggerating)!) And bring plenty of water! Dressing room: TEEENY tiny, with no little thoughtful amenities. I showered here once and realized there was more space to move around IN the shower stall than out in the dressing room. Price: 10-days for $10 is a bargain introduction. After that, it's a bit steep at $20/class. (monthly = $99, 5-class card = $95, 10-class = $170, 20-class = $280, 50-class = $600) I mention all this because it is NOT to be found anywhere on their website. Is there some reason it's such a secret? Store: There seems to be a disproportionate amount of space dedicated to yoga-wear and CD sales. Huh??? Maybe they actually sell a lot of $100 hoodies --I've only ever seen one clothing purchase there-- but I'd much rather be able to turn around in the dressing room without having to step outside. read more

This review is exclusively for the check-in woman at the front desk during the weekends. As many other times, I went to this Saturday's 10 am Yoga class with a couple of friends. The class was great and I finished it feeling energized...EXCEPT... that the woman at the front desk ruined it all. Again (she has done it before). As we were saying good bye, she stopped us and in a VERY unfriendly way (the same unfriendly way she checked me in) began to suggest that we had taken the class without registering / paying...excuse me???!!! I've been a customer for more than 2 years AND my friends, who were coming from San Francisco, had spent 10 or 15 minutes registering for the class just 90 minutes before; only a misunderstanding, right? No problem. So why be aggressive and nasty? It is unfortunate that a great class is ruined by this rude and unproffessional woman. This is Mill Valley, we don't crash classes without paying...learn some basic customer service skills. NAMASTE. read more

There's a lot good here. I fell in love with hot yoga at Red Dragon, but here's my BIG issue. There needs to be better quality control of the instructors. Some are great, but after a Bikram class a couple months ago, I felt like not returning. The instructor says she likes to "instruct" because she can get her workout in, which means, she's not instructing; she's just doing her thing. No observing, no coaching, nothing...and I brought a new student with me. And, the next time I went, same instructor, the heat was way too high. Students (experienced ones) spoke up and got literally yelled at. I've done a lot of yoga, and being yelled at and the heat so high that my earrings were burning my skin is ridiculous, on top of an instructor just hanging out. Which is not to say, I haven't had phenomenal experiences, but if they aren't consistent, one will go elsewhere. read more

I realized I have been going to Red Dragon for more than a decade and I've never really expressed how much I enjoy and appreciate this place and what it does for me and so I want to express my gratitude here. I am glad that Red Dragon is here and so accessible to me. I do not fit the profile of a super yogi and Red Dragon is place that is open supportive to use yoga how it works for me. I do hot yoga for better health, stretching to counter-balance sports and life and to feel refreshed and alive. As a Yogi, its very hard to write negative things but when considering a yoga studio, it should be filled with positivity however this place is far from that with the Manager. I was impressed after reviewing the company website how they did not have a bio of the manage roof this studio! GOOD because the website doesn't need to waste time on writing something good about such a negative and rude individual. Without explaining what had happened on MY FIRST VISIT to this studio, I left thinking "THANK GOD THERE IS ANOTHER STUDIO" and maybe that one would be better! IT SURE WAS! Emily Leahy, is totally UNYogi, with mind of entrust within herself and others and really should be kicked to the curb. Otherwise, Anna, Amy and Heather are ROCKIN AWESOME teachers. After my 10 day free pass expires, Id have to have an amazing deal to come back to this place thanks to such an inconsiderate and disrespectful individual. read more

Highly Disappointing. Please note that this review is not reflective at all of the teachers or the classes, just in reference to the staff and ownership. I was referred to Red Dragon by a good friend who has been going here for 15 years and who speaks so highly of this studio. I went in to sign up for a trial and was thrown off by the managers unfriendliness. However, I ended up check out their merchandise for a friends birthday, leading to a fairly large purchase for her. Unfortunately, it turns out she she is no longer a size M. No big deal, I thought, Ill go back and exchange all the merchandise for S. Well, they did not have smalls, and they could not order them. So, I asked to be reimbursed and they said that they could only offer me store credit. Not only was this already a bummer situation, the manager of this location is horribly unpleasant to speak to, yet again the second time around. When I called to speak to the owner to discuss the fairly large amount that was spent, she was on vacation. I spoke to her other manager in San Rafael who was much more accommodating and apologetic. She was going to get back to me ASAP to help resolve. It is now 3 weeks later and I have not heard back. Just now, per my conversation with management again, there is "nothing" they can do per there Return Policy (which was not disclosed at MY time of purchase.) I fully understand that if an establishment has a no return policy and clearly enforces it. However, this was not the case in this situation. Also, you would think that that want to take good care of their customers especially if they are new to the studio and bring money to their establishment. I have never been treated so unprofessionally by a yoga studio. I will not be wasting one ounce of my energy dealing with the staff at this location. My short encounter at Red Dragon overall would be labeled as rude, abrasive, sarcastic, condescending and overall disappointing. Its quite alarming to walk into a yoga studio with this kind of negativity. I hope others have a better experience. read more

per the below comments - - the "nazi" yoga teachers are either no longer here or have been reminded not to be so intense during the yoga classes! so please, come try out our lovely teachers. - if bikram isn't exactly your style, as it can be a little serious, you should try a power yoga class. not as intense, not as hot, has music going on during class, and might be more fun for you. - the heating system has been improved here in that it has been evened out - so you won't be stuck in a "hot spot" - it's now just a generally heated room. - also, if you don't agree with the prices at red dragon, there is a "work trade" program, where for two hours of helping out around the studio a week, you get free and unlimited yoga.... not too bad, eh? apologies to those who had a bad experience here - were kicked out, felt it was not a supportive place, etc. hope you'll give us another chance! read more

I love yoga. I have practiced at least a few times almost EVERYWHERE in Marin, but Red Dragon has officially become my new yogi home. The instructors are friendly and professional. No nonsense environment. Very clean and very HOT. I practice both Bikram and power yoga most mornings and love the people who make this place an amazing retreat. I 100% agree this is the best studio in Mill Valley - instructors teach vigorous classes with detailed and very precise alignment cues. Classes are hard and hot but they get easier. Every teacher seems to have a lot of experience. The only critique is the studio needs a little TLC. But, personally, it's more about the quality of the teachers than the esthetic of the space. read more

I still think that this is the only good studio for yoga in Marin - assuming you like it hot. We love Christian's classes. He is very positive, easy to follow, and very helpful with making slight changes that really help you to improve your poses. The only two downsides - size of womens bathroom (I am not sure why they don't remove some of the clothing and expand the restroom), and the lack of early morning classes (7-8:30 may be early for those who don't have to work, but many of the rest of us need to be out of a yoga class by 7:30 at the latest in order to make it to work, and the evening classes start too early to get there from work). I, as well as my colleagues, would be much more inclined to do a monthly or even yearly membership if classes were at a time that suited people who don't work 9-5. read more

As a newbie to hot yoga, I had to give this place a shot after my daughter raved of the experience here. The four stars goes to the instructor (I believe Ann is her name), she easily pinned me as a beginner (huh what?! Me??) and assisted me very gently and precisely in correcting my poses. I didn't understand the general rules or procedures of the studio so was a little lost. I had tried signing up for their special online (website didn't offer) so did this as a walk-in. Class was crowded and front desk was too busy to explain any pertinent things I needed to know. Overall, I'm looking forward to more classes here! read more

Just got out of a fantastic bikram class with instructor Christian. I am not a yoga junkie, probably go once or twice a week, so it is great to attend a class that is open to all levels. Christian kept my attention with constant tips and support and allowed me to do more than I thought I could. Sometimes red dragon classes are very full but the instructors are great! read more

Liked the place a whole lot better a year later...did IT change or did I? I'm not sure...Jennifer's Sunday noon class was the perfect mix of intensity, heat and silence...without giving one of those deadly 'yoga preachings', she told basic truths as we practiced that really touched my heart in their simplicity. Wonderful class...also, maybe I'm just more acclimated to hotter vinyasa now as I liked the 100 degree heat. And the gym-style mats on the floor didn't bother me, in fact they made it easier to not fear falling out of handstand away from the wall! One star off cuz I still think they should paint or update the crutty tiny dressing room. But other than that, I've become a fan of the place. Who knew? read more

I like this place because the teachers are generally very good, the atmosphere is relaxed and the students are good fans of yoga. I like the choice of Bikram or Power Yoga. I like that the classes are heated. A few classes use an interesting selection of music. Love that. I have my favorite teachers, Tim, Wendy, Tom and Cindy. I don't relate to the "yoga nazi" comments of other yelpers. In fact, if anything I've noticed over the years that the Bikram instruction at many places is far less demanding than it was 20 years ago.The truth is that the Bikram style just isn't for everyone. While it's a pretty challenging format for just about everybody, if you stick with it you may find you get used to the routine and your body starts to feel great. If it's still unpleasant or just isn't jiving then try something else! Different strokes for different folks! In reference to another yelpers perspective on the more athletic approach to yoga at Red Dragon: While it's nice to feel peaceful during and after a yoga class, I'd rather save that for meditation class or when I'm in the mood for something more restorative. Personally, I do yoga because I want a real workout -I want my torso stretched and lengthened, my balance enhanced, and I want to sweat. There are various places in my body that appreciates a good strong yoga workout. I always leave Red Dragon feeling great, and peaceful. I also like Sharon Baptiste's class at Gold's and have come to appreciate more the beautiful mix she brings to class, of yoga, body and spirit. But there's nothing like a hot yoga class when you need it! Unfortunately the dressing room is indeed a bummer. Way too small. And I wish the clothing was less expensive. I gave Red Dragon 5 stars anyway because I know I can always count on a great workout whenever I go and I like the no fuss, friendly, yet quiet atmosphere. Two years ago I did their "40 days to personal revolution" workshop and it was great. The workshop leaders were very supportive and I had some great results. They focused on diet, meditation and yoga 6 days/week. We had a partner to check in with. They brought in a nutritionist to speak to us. Sometimes the group process got a little bogged down, but overall it was challenging, effective and fun. They are having another one starting Monday, February 23, 2009. read more

When I'm practicing in Marin, I practice at both Red Dragon Studios. It's great because both studios offer Bikram and Power so you can usually find a class that works for you within your schedule. I prefer power yoga over Bikram, but the Bikram classes are great here also. For Power: Wendy, Becca, Abria, Cindy, Andrea and Stephanie are who I usually practice with when my schedule allows. They all have different styles so if you don't care for one class then don't give up, just try a different instructor. This studio is smaller that the San Rafael location but it still works! This yoga organization seems to be the best in Marin. read more

This is a wonderful place to do yoga, friendly helpful staff and great teachers. I especially recommend Heather Sotnick's class for her positive energy and joyful sequencing of movement. She knows just how to time the poses so as not to leave you hanging. Also Ed Levinson is great. He has a great sense of humor and really knows his stuff when it comes to the meditative element and modifications for different types of bodies. He often gives choose your own adventure poses with a low-pressure invitation to go more deeply into a pose. I especially like his power and yin class on Sunday nights. read more

I've always been on the fence about yoga in general. I'm used to what I call "active" sports like boxing, and yoga is more like a "meditative" practice, not a sport. That's ok, but just something I'm not used to doing. Sometimes when it's too slow and restorative I get bored. Sometimes when it's so hard that they're trying to get me to wrap myself into a pretzel I get a little nervous, and feel like I'm going to tear something important. I think I'm going to try to synopsize Red Dragon because when they first opened I went there six days a week for a year and a half. Then I stopped going, and recently started back up last month. Red Dragon is almost competitive yoga, it's not restorative and not all about breath. It's a kick-your -ass-we-know-you-drive-a-beemer sort of yoga for people that want to feel like they accomplished something (like 1. not passing out during class, 2. not puking during class, 3. realizing in that heat you can get your toes about your head in standing bow pulling pose, 4. realizing that not all the teacher there are the same and just attempting to get through that class). It's not an easy class, and I'm never relaxed after class like when I have done yoga with Ms. Baptiste at Golds or Bay Club. I do have to say that I am always proud of myself when I walk out of Red Dragon, in one piece, without passing out and that I've sweated twelve pounds of water. I do feel great when I'm done. And I want to go back, to get better, to push myself past somewhere that does feel comfortable sometimes. That's a part of my personality though. I'm an A-type perfectionist a lot, to my own demise. I have experienced the very difficult teacher, but I will tell you that when I used to go there, Lisa, my favorite teacher of all, ever, was so peaceful and gracious and wonderful that she got me hooked. I was loving that I was doing yoga, and she was getting me to focus on my breath and coming around and fixing my poses and telling me just to do my best. It's a hard class, not for the faint of heart. But I'll tell you, on a freezing raining winter day, the 6:30 Bikram for 90 minutes is wonderfully restorative. I'm all warm and cozy when I leave. I'm completely exhausted, and when it's raining, I sleep like a baby. That's worth 20 bucks to me, and sweatin' my fly ass off for 90 minutes if you ask me. read more

Disgusting. No professional cleaning. Volunteers do all the cleaning and for what I see they just talk and try on clothes. This is a septic tank full of germs, bacteria, fungi, and pubic hair every where you go. I got a skin infection from going there 5 times a week, showering immediately after, and it took me two years to get rid of it. A minor wipe of tea tree oil does not cut it. read more

Was entirely unsurprised to see the negative reviews here...here's mine: Signed up for the $10 for 10 days because I do enjoy hotter yoga. Went to San Rafael yesterday...it was crowded and very hot, but an ok experience. Came to class in Mill Valley tonight: was not even greeted as we walked in. "Just sign in on the iPad". The space is tiny - one third of the SR location, both the shop and the studio are very compact. The space was Bikram hot...very uncomfortable. Then came the fun part: Instructor (with whom I'd had an enjoyable private lesson in the past) walks in and goes from 10 seconds in child's pose directly to down dog and into first flow. No greetings, no warmup, no evaluating the class for beginners (which you're bound to have when you give away 10 classes for 10 dollars), no finding breath, etc. You'd think and hour and a half class would allow time for all of this...? The instructor never once corrected me, or anyone else for that matter - just rambled through poses as if they were what he wanted to do. Nor did he do or demonstrate a single pose - just walked around ranting for the entire hour and a half. At least I'd done yoga about 100 times over the years...a true newbie wouldn't have stood a chance. We could have done half the poses (CORRECTLY) in half the time and done a far safer and more effective workout. About 45 minutes into an hour and half session of being cycled rapidly through countless poses with alternative advanced "binds", my back actually went out. So, instead of disrupting the class, i laid quietly for the next 45 minutes while they finished. You'd think after me laying on the ground listening to a bunch of self-gratifying a-holes try to impress themselves with how far they could take their poses, the instructor's first instinct might have been to come right to the guy laying on his back for the past 45 minutes and ask if I was ok. Nope. I limped out of the studio listening to a bunch of self-congratulatory "great class, man"s and wasn't even acknowledged by the instructor. Didn't even bother to to ask if i was ok. Contrast that with YogaWorks, where instructors ask who is new, what are their names (gasp!), do they have any injuries, deep breathing and warmup focused on BREATH (which, as I understand it is the entire practice of yoga), correctly holding poses, smooth transitions between poses, physical and verbal corrections, laying on of hands, and peaceful unwinding of the practice - even during advanced Vinyasa flow classes. Apparently, if you're a self-absorbed narcissist who loves to look at yourself in the mirror and doesn't give a crap about anyone else, then this is the place for you. If you're a person who believes in practicing yoga to lift everyone's collective fitness, well-being, and spirit within the room and beyond, then don't bother walking through these doors. This place is not sanitary!!! I have been to many Bikram studios in my time. This place might just win the prize for being the filthiest studio I have encountered. Wow! What a marked discrepancy between this location and the San Rafael location. If you want to try Red Dragon, go to San Rafael. Also, it was at this location that I had what appeared to be an inebriated instructor. You could smell the alcohol on her as she paced around the room. Furthermore, she slurred her words and got the postures out of order. The students had to correct her. Not okay at all!!!! read more

I know initially I wasn't the only one who had a less great experience here and maybe now things have changed for the better. In fact my girl friend likes the Bikrum classes that are offered here and has been trying to get me back. So I am not entirely negative on this place. I recently completed the 40 day yoga challenge with Cindy Storman, Amy Chamosta and my 13 year old daughter. Life has been harder than hard. Everything I have needed in life, I get from my yoga practice. Determination, pushing myself, faith and love from the Red Dragon Family. My family has had extreme hardship and the 40 day challenge saved my life and my daughter. What an amazing experience with my teen. Bikram and Baron Baptiste say 40 days will change your life.
