Red door
Carolyn L.

Thank God for Yelp. We were searching for a breakfast place in Leura and the Red Door Cafe popped up. In we went through the red door, yes there is an actual red door here, and got ourselves seated. The place is small, maybe 10 tables or so, with a limited menu and specials written on the board on the wall. It was not very crowded at 9+ in the morning so we got a table easily. I decided to go for one of the specials on the board - crispy fried eggs, tomato relish dukkah, herbs and Turkish toast. That was to die for. The eggs were perfectly crisped around the edges and the yolks were runny and they were covered by the a bit sweetish relish. Pair it with the buttered Turkish toast and it was just so good. For haloumi fans, they have it for breakfast too, served with poached eggs. The flat white was also good over here. Service was prompt and professional. Just a casual eatery for good decent food.

Yum!!! I ordered the haloumi on poached eggs with a side of bacon. I mean, come on. It was fantastic. Perfectly cooked eggs and the haloumi was a nice surprise since I didnt know what to expect. Fyi, it's a dense cheese, like a mozzarella after it's been cooked and cooled in texture but quite salty. Yum. I recommend sitting at the window, the people watching is great!

They have an actual red door (two if you count the screen) so I assume the name is literal, not some veiled vaginal reference. It was early in Leura, and as this place is normally busy, I thought I'd grab the chance to try it before the tourists arrived. Yay, counter. Went and perched by the big windows and waited. And waited. Surreptitiously looked around for 'no table service sign'. Nope. Very poshly dressed business blonde walked in and sat behind me. She was given a menu immediately and asked what she wanted. Menu slapped next to me, without a word. Humpf. I dressed down today, it's freaking hot. So sue me. Looked through menu, food looked good, if limited, only a couple of gf choices. Organic coffee. Sounds great. Attempt in vain to catch waiter's eye. Fail miserably. Posh blonde changes her order to take away and leaves. Finally get to order coffee. Was going to get a bowl (love coffee in bowls) but was too annoyed by this stage. Coffee eventually comes, it's good enough, but nothing to write home about. Meanwhile I've been watching some poor tired girl mind a fluffy bit of nothing dog out on the street (there's a ridiculous dog salon next door) while listening to some woman getting take away babble on about how difficult it is to get more than $1500 a day out of her bank account. You poor dear. Am horrified to see her come and grab dog-fluff's lead from the girl. Didn't get her a coffee either. Miffed at the service, I pay and leave. After hearing someone else complain about the slow service. To be fair, this seems to be a very popular cafe generally, perhaps I caught someone on a bad day. I'm not having much luck with cafes in Leura of late. The search continues.

We stopped here on our way to Blue Mountains. This cafe was super busy and based on other Yelp reviews we thought we had to give it a try. We didn't have a lot of time I had a cappuccino and the bruschetta and my husband had a latte and croissant. Both were very good. Others around is had the French toast, which looked very good and I would definitely try if we go back.

For brunch, we stopped at the Red Door Café. It's actually a funny story how we ended up there. We were originally at another restaurant for breakfast, but the menu was only filled with complicated lunch selections and other things that weren't appetizing so early in the morning. Much to our surprise, our waitress suggested the Red Door Café, which was right across the street, for our breakfast. It's a small place with an outdoor seating area to the side. We sat inside, which was cozy and pretty full. The coffee was great, and I couldn't wait to get my food. I ordered a special, which was a poached egg plate with greens and halloumi cheese over sourdough. Sadly, it took almost 25 minutes to get our plates to the table, which is much longer than anyone needs to wait for breakfast (especially if you're already starving!) Luckily, the quality of the food redeemed for the sluggish service. It was really great, especially for the price. I would definitely come back if I find myself in Leura in the near future.

Great little bistro style cafe. Really enjoyed the food and coffee. I would definitely recommend it for a casual bite.

Still, I'm a big online fan because otherwise I can spend half a day looking for somewhere to eat. And the online menu does say they love people with allergies. However there is no mention of gluten or gluten free on the menu. Maybe this is related to the tightening of Australian rules into "gluten friendly" rather than gluten free. Since their specialty is hot sandwiches, I'm up in the air on the gluten front. If they will allow choosing from the sides and extras menu, that would be perfect. I also like how many of their prices have stayed reasonable, with five dollar coffees, I don't know if I can eat them but their egg sandwiches for Brekky look positively dreamy.

What a unique interior- hard to explain but almost like being on a ship. They told us they have a business in Alaska and fish for their own salmon and transport it here so of course I had to try the special. It was fantastic. Can't eat it like a sandwich so ask for a fork :) Hubs had the Deli Rose and loved it. Ate every bit. Friendly service, lots of languages spoken here. Loved it Aussie 43.50

We started with coffees, that were very cute, coming with tiny bear cookies. I had the avocado toast with eggs and the husband had the waffle with chocolate and ice cream and the works. My avocado toast was quite tasty. The cheese on top was delicious! The waffle was not nearly as good. It had sprinkles on top that made it very crunchy. Anyway, if you're looking for breakfast, this isn't a bad place, but maybe not the best place in the area to stop.

It wasn't coffee I sought but waffles, and they did well. Their strategy is to offer small but inexpensive items and charge for toppings, which worked out fine for me. I ordered a presumably healthy whole grain waffle, a tasty cinnamon one, and split my maple syrup and kiwi fruit between them. These were thick, cake-y waffles, quite satisfying. They also offered potatoes with a range of savory toppings, and I rather wished I'd gotten one of those after sampling it. They offered some nice shake flavors and ice cream as well. As a non-coffee drinker, I can't vouch for that, but as far as food goes, between the customization, value for money, and premium location, I was very happy, enough to round up the 4+ stars for the rating.
