Sandy Arrives to Speed Tom's AT Finish: After Tom left to meet Sandy, I registered for a room at The Doyle, rebuilt after the 1903 fire. It was a fun place designed before air conditioning with lots of fresh air, especially on the giant second floor porch. It makes the ideal place to be "socially distanced," yet meet others. The steady rain much of the afternoon and evening, made perfect timing for a nero. The Doyle's owners, Vickey and Pat, sent me to the post office "just down the street. You can't miss it. There is a hiker box with good stuff." They also said to catch the free 4 p.m. shuttle from The Doyle to Mutzabaugh's Market for groceries. I walked completely through downtown Duncannon in the misty cold rain but couldn't find the post office and returned to the Doyle for new directions. Turned out that I passed it, just like when I step over trail barriers on the AT. Against my natural instincts I found the post office only a couple of blocks from the Doyle. Inside was a hiker box filled with stuff and especially energy bars. The lady said, "Take all you want, no one has been here in a long time. We need to get rid of them." She had even more bars in the back room to get rid of. I don't usually eat candy or power bars but took a dozen Whey Protein and Muscle Milk protein bars. Eating them only in emergencies, they lasted at least another month. Actually I ate the last ones eight months later, crumbly but still good! At 4 p.m. the convenient free shuttle took me to Mutzabaugh's Market, in town since 1920, for resupply. I filled my food bag and caught the quick shuttle back to The Doyle. At its perfectly maintained 120-year-old bar and restaurant, I ate a gourmet hamburger The Doyle was famous for. Then I read their library of history and trail yearbooks. The owners really loved their hikers and treated me like family. Their photo was in Odie's Hiker Yearbook. This hiker-favorite yearbook has photos and contacts for many of the section and thru-hikers I met on the AT. The Hiker Yearbook was so fun, I later bought two, one for 2019 and one for 2020! The hotel's old, creaking, wooden steps felt just like I was in an old cowboy movie. I wondered if famous hikers like Grandma Gatewood, Earl Shaffer, Baltimore Jack, or Ed Garvey had slept here. The bathroom had a real claw-legged antique bathtub! The Doyle's community shower was not so clean but had hot water to wash my body and clothes. After using my washcloth on me, I used it to clean the shower stall, giving me a nice long hot shower while "working." I hung my shower-washed clothes and damp supplies all over the room with clotheslines made from my food bag rope. My room was 100 years old but clean. After being cold and wet much of the day, the hot gas heater right next to my single bed dried out my stuff quickly and kept me toasty warm! I was up until about midnight packing and thinking about resupplies, trail plan changes, and how appreciative I was that Vickey and Pat kept The Doyle operating! It surprised me that some hikers, who have been sleeping in mice-infested shelters, weren't as enthused as I was. Many hikers want new motels, which is OK, but for me The Doyle was a highlight of the AT! It was a long, successful day! Duncannon was 1,149 miles from Springer Mountain.

There was an out-of- state foursome near our table who commented to each other how much they loved the building and toasted their friend for picking the resturant.

My concern is not that the hotel allows pets--it's the lack of cleanliness throughout the property. I am staying in Room 209, and upon arrival, the floors had not been swept, and there was hair throughout the bathroom. The entire second floor has a strong odor of dog urine and feces. Even more concerning, I observed what appeared to be pet urine and feces in the common areas, extending from the dining area through the lobby and hallways. This is completely unacceptable for any hotel. If my room were not prepaid, I would be checking out immediately and booking a room at a Marriott property. I will also be sharing this experience on multiple hotel review sites because travelers deserve to know the conditions before booking. I do want to make it clear that this review is not a reflection of the front desk associate, Ale. She was professional, kind, and very accommodating. When I requested a broom and room spray because of the condition of my room, she happily provided both, and I returned them shortly afterward. Ale provided excellent customer service despite the hotel's housekeeping and cleanliness issues.

Check in was a breeze and the lovely lady working the evening I got into town was happy and just extremely pleasant to deal with. she got me on my way in a few moments after I arrived. Rooms were good sized and very clean- as were all areas of the establishment: Common areas, hallways etc. Bed was comfy, and the hot water was hot - without having to wait forever. Perfect. In the morning, they offer what I would say is one of the best free breakfasts I've had in quite some time. Coffee was not only hot, but tasted very good - a rare find these days. The hot offerings changed daily and pretty much every dietary preference was covered in some fashion. the folks doing kitchen duty were obviously very dedicated to their jobs, and it showed. Round it all out with an indoor pool and fitness center as well as a small outdoor patio seating area, and you have a very good place to unwind after a long day of meetings or whatever it is that brings you to town. Overall a wonderful experience and I would absolutely use this location again if back in the area.

The building is clean and crisp throughout. Beautifully decorated. The room is spacious. And that jetted tub soothes away achy traveling muscles. Next, the big comfy bed swallows you up into a cocoon of comfort. I slept like a baby. Breakfast was simple but delicious. An unexpected highlight was the TLC and attention to detail provided to the guest by the incomparable Jody. She's phenomenal. I had the immediate sense of her kindness and compassion. This was a late check-in and I found I needed to unwind from the road. No way I could sleep. Yet. So we chatted just a bit. It was like one of those 'seeing an old friend and catching up' moments. People just actually listening. Two-way. I picked this hotel on the fly. Spontaneously. Something I LOVE to do! The reviews were rated with some pretty complimentary praise so it was a real easy pick. I was NOT DISAPPOINTED!!!

We had to make several phone calls to get the codes to access the building and room. This was just the first of many problems we encountered. The rooms were nice, but the service was terrible. We paid for a hot breakfast every morning, which was advertised when we booked. This was not the case when we arrived. No hot breakfast at all. Just cold lunch meat,hard boiled eggs, toast if you wanted to fix it yourself, instant oatmeal in a packet, over ripped bananas, and strawberries. This is not the hot breakfast that we paid for. I contacted the management company that operates the B&B and was told they stopped the hot breakfast two weeks before we arrived. I ask why we weren't informed about this. I was told they couldn't notified everyone that had reservations, over four hundred. I told them we would like to have a partial refund because they didn't give us what was advertised, and we paid for. As of today, they still list a hot breakfast on most of the travel websites. They didn't offer any refund. They said to review the cancellation policy. I then said we would have cancelled our entire stay if we had known this before we left home. Still no offer to at least a partial refund. We had to go to a restaurant and get our breakfast every day, and that was an extra expense. As of today, after several back and forth emails, still no offer of any kind of refund. As far as the service part of our stay. We had to ask every day for clean towels, wouldn't take the dirty ones, or empty the trash during our entire stay. I told the management company this is not a good way to run a business. I don't think they care at all about how they treat the people that rent at this B&B. I would never book this place again. I hope people read this review and avoid this property.

Wife and I along with her cousins were passing through this area to attend a wedding at a nearby venue, we needed to spend the night some place not far from the venue and not expensive. Luckily wife's cousins found this little spot and it was a nice find. First let me tell you that this is not some fancy schmancy froufee froufee resort spa, it is clean but bare basics, which suited us just fine. Don't expect the Four Seasons here it is what it is and should be valued at that level. Booking and check in was a breeze all done over the Interwebs no need for a key just a code and whala the doors open like magic. Inside you will find at least in our two tiny rooms; a bed, one bedside night stand, a TV, a small micro wave and small fridge.... ohh and a chair. That's about it but I see that they have larger rooms and apartments complete with kitchenettes for those who are staying a while longer. This property only has 17 rooms and is privately owned and operated. As I mentioned before our rooms were very clean and the surrounding property appeared to be well maintained. They don't have a restaurant or anything like that but close by you can find plenty of places for a fast meal just get out and explore the area. It is a nice little spot for road weary travelers but I have a couple of well intended suggestions to make it a little better for the smaller rooms like ours at 103. One is the need for some sort of wall mounted shelf with hangers for clothing since there is no room for closet or armoire. Also a small table or at least a folding TV table that would help one settle in a little better and to accompany the microwave and fridge for a quick dine in meal. Also a folding luggage rack would make living out of a suitcase a little easier instead of having to operate on the floor. The bathroom had on a bar of soap nothing else but I travel well prepared for many situations. The water pressure was a little weak when needing to flush but not an major issue probably a quick fix by turning up the valve. You will hear road noise if facing the road but it is a road less traveled and not bad at all. You might have a noisy neighbor who smokes a lot out side but that can happen anywhere. The only major complaint I have and like I said I don't need a lot of gimmicks but I do need a nice firm mattress. Ours was not, it felt like we were laying on a overly soft marshmallow sinking to the middle down a deep hole. I woke up in the middle of the night with my back killing me. I had to use the firm pillows (they give you four two on each side) under my back just to get back to sleep. Wife likes a soft mattress but this was way too soft even for her. The next day her cousins also complained of the uber soft sinking to the floor mattress so it wasn't just me. So if management can address the mattress issues with rooms 102 and 103 I think all will be fine. So I give this nice little place a 3.75 out of 5 stars because of the mattress issue. A good night's comfortable rest is very important. So if you are ever up that way and need a stay that doesn't cost an arm and a leg I recommend it just be sure to put a pillow under your back and they'll keep a light on for you.

Safe parking lot and hotel. The free continental breakfast is typical but isn't bad at all. Staff are extremely friendly and helpful. Our room had a toilet that wouldn't flush when we first got to our room and they assigned us a new room right next door so we didn't have to move our stuff across the floor. Great hotel that is simple and safe. Seemed very clean too.
