Absolute used to be so friendly and a welcoming environment. My most recent visit has been quite…read morethe opposite. When going to look at helmets we were shammed into throwing away one we had brought in. We brought in an old helmet to compare sizes to a new one and when asking for the right size the employee shamed us for still having the old helmet despite telling him multiple times it hadn't been used in years. The helmet was sentimental as it was my moms first helmet for when she started mountain biking and the employee continued to throw it away. I wanted to look at a different store for a helmet for myself (Absolutes competitor) but they were sold out so I came back to buy one from Absolute. When I came back in the same employee was rude/caddy making a comment along the line of "What they didn't have what you were looking for" which rubbed me the wrong way and made me less happy spending my money there. After this comment he proceeded to attempt to upsell me into buying a different grade helmet and another bike (despite all of our bikes being right outside) but at this point I had just picked one that seemed it would fit best. Upon checking out I asked if the stickers on the counter were free or not and a different employee proceeded to be smart with me. He sarcastically said if I took a hundred stickers he would charge me $100. As many people from salida know stickers typically do cost in storefronts and I was asking to be respectful.

Then you had to text back 'only do this and that'. I did not like that green eggs and ham. Anyway went in asking that my headset be greased expecting the same as above. Mech put it on stand, greased it up reassembled and said anything else- said no what do I owe you? NO CHARGE. So I tipped him. Your results may vary but If you go and get similar treatment give em a big tip. Awesome!

I had looked up local bike shops the day before on Yelp and remembered Criterium had great reviews so I said to myself, "I have no idea what I'm doing. I need help" so I went to Criterium. I'm so happy that I did! I walked into the store, and within one minute, Tom came over to ask if I needed help. I told him what kind of rides I intended on doing and my budget, and he showed me all of the available options for my height/size. He was very thorough and explained the breaks, gears, and features on the bikes. He adjusted the bike before I took it for a test ride, and again before purchase (I also added a kickstand and a water bottle holder). I loved how the service wasn't pushy at all, and he was honest about quality and ride. It was nice having help the entire way through the process. Highly recommend Criterium. Will be back for my husband's bike service as well as future tune ups. Additional note: I took my new bike for a six mile ride when I got home, and it met all of my expectations. I love the aesthetics, and it rides great! Def the nicest bike I've ever owned.

He got me a quote within about 5-7 days of course the price for the repairs I couldn't beat! The knowledge and knowing he was going to fix it correctly the first time (and tune it some as it has never been tuned with over 500 miles on it) was something I was willing to pay and expert to do. And it's exactly what I needed. He was so kind and willing and helpful to answer questions I had but mainly we just talked as I am quite comfortable with bikes and motorcycles I just needed that confirmation that the frame was indeed sound and that the parts that needed to be replaced were down correctly. Vance reminds me of my brother very old school yet thorough with his work and doesn't nickel and dime you just cause. I paid a very fair price for his experience/time and his keen eye I feel safe back on my bike and have tuned up brakes to boot! I am not sure what the problem is in the 7 plus year ago comments probably had a bad apple working in their shop and it bled over into the reviews. But my take on him and his lovely wife is A++++ shop! Also- I think a lot of people are in such a hurry for their things to be done. I just sent it over and got out of his way- when I got a call I got a call. I never called or dogged him for an eta I let him do his work on his time. I think people get into that "when's my stuff done" mentality and that's when you get a tough time working with folks. I always approach things with catching more flies with honey! He's has one cool little shop and even a cool mini lift for his bikes which I thought was soooo cool! He's got it down to a science to make his job easier and I love that for them!
