Whenever I visit the farmers market, my first stop is always to put an order in at the Red Barn food truck. They have gluten free bread and the way they grill their grilled cheese sandwiches is next level. Even if the menu option doesn't come with tomato soup, I grab some anyways. There's nothin like dipping that cheesy toasty bread into tomato soup... oh and finishing it off with a tangy bite of a pickle and some kettle chips. Brings me back to childhood! Very yummy sandwiches, but the pickles were the star of the lunch in my opinion. Damn, they were good!!!

No wonder their lines are sometimes long, although they do turn the orders around pretty fast. I'd seen their signs about grilled cheese and thought how I can grill my own cheese sandwiches. These are really more like cool combinations of sandwich ingredients that are grilled with cheese and sauces. They feature as much locally produced product as they can. Very very good bread, their own special pickles, fresh squeezed lemonade! Today's special was a turkey cranberry Dijon mustard cheese combo that was downright luscious. It was big enough that I made 2 meals out of it. A big pickle slice is included, and a handful of potato chips and a handful of purple potato chips. You can place an order online or order at the window, where the young lady is super nice and moves things along efficiently. It's clearly a well organized operation. Really enjoyed the grilled cheesy sandwich at the Wednesday farmers market in Waimea. It comes with tomato soup, two kinds of chips and a pickle spear (I believe made by Red Barn) The Frenchman sounds really good so that's next. Order was done within the time they gave so all good. Maybe 10 mins. And it's Hawai'i so how can the ambience be bad? Nice folks, very friendly and great food can't be beat. I also tried the guava lemonade and it was very tasty. Good lawd! I was sad and happy all at once eating The Purple Pig. Happy I was eating such a delicious and creative sandwich. Sad that I had to share it with my wife. And sad when I took my last bite because it was all gone. The Purple Taro bread was fun, creative and delicious. The Kalua pig was tender, flavorful and cooked perfectly. Made a detour heading to Kona and stopped at the Waimea Farmers Market. Lots of choices, but ended up sharing a couple dishes from the trucks. Found Red Barn and had a hard time deciding between the Frenchman and the Beast Nachos. Since we were sharing, we went with the Nachos. They did not disappoint. Chips (purple sweet potato) were loaded with kalua pig, melted cheese-which I am pretty sure they melted on the griddle, then scooped and placed on the cheese, sour cream, avo and tomato. It was a lot of food for $15. Chips stayed crunchy from the first bite to the last. Can't wait to try a special grilled cheese next time I am in Waimea. read more

The food is amazing and the price point is fantastic. However, since we have some family members with lots of food allergy issues (gluten free, dairy free), they were able to find the right thing for all of us. That was truly an incredible, thoughtful feat and we will absolutely be back next time we are in Hawaii. Red Barn serves up delicious sandwiches made with locally sourced goods from the Kamuela Farmer's Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Grab a plate, enjoy the rolling green pastures and the Kohala mountains in the distance and mingle with the locals and tourists, alike. We enjoyed the "Frenchman" mushroom, carmelized onions with truffle oil sandwich, the "Swine" pulled pork sliders, and the "Beast" loaded nachos. The portions are generous and the quality of ingredients top notch. We made two stops during our recent stay and got to chat with Will and April on the second visit as they closed up shop. I was very lucky to run into the "Red Barn" lunch truck on Church Row in Waimea yesterday! I was actually running down to town to grab a quick lunch, saw the lunch truck and decided to try them out! While there observed that they had pretty good set up, it was clean and rather organized! They have a great menu section of specialize grilled cheese sandwiches! What a delight on such a cold day as it was yesterday! Although, the menu showed that they were out of particular items, one being the Frenchman grilled cheese sandwich, the owner Willie, offered to make me his last and final one that he had! I cannot tell you what the ingredients were aside from the fabulous cheese and mushrooms and truffle oil BUT it was phenomenal!
