The PURPLE PIG
Sterling M.

Good lawd! I was sad and happy all at once eating The Purple Pig. Happy I was eating such a delicious and creative sandwich. Sad that I had to share it with my wife. And sad when I took my last bite because it was all gone. The Purple Taro bread was fun, creative and delicious. The Kalua pig was tender, flavorful and cooked perfectly. The staff were friendly and helpful. I highly recommend this food truck!

Made a detour heading to Kona and stopped at the Waimea Farmers Market. Lots of choices, but ended up sharing a couple dishes from the trucks. Found Red Barn and had a hard time deciding between the Frenchman and the Beast Nachos. Since we were sharing, we went with the Nachos. They did not disappoint. Chips (purple sweet potato) were loaded with kalua pig, melted cheese-which I am pretty sure they melted on the griddle, then scooped and placed on the cheese, sour cream, avo and tomato. It was a lot of food for $15. Chips stayed crunchy from the first bite to the last. Can't wait to try a special grilled cheese next time I am in Waimea.

Sizzling Serrano sandwich w/ pickle and potato chips

I had the sizzling Serrano sandwich, which was fantastic with a balance mix of sweet, sour and savory flavors. The creamy cheese gives it a velvety luxe texture like a million bucks. Despite the chiles, the sandwich is not spicy, with just a hint of heat. Cucumber pickle was on the sweet Asian pickling profile, reminding me of my mom's recipe. There are a few (I.e. limited number so plan on waiting for a bit) picnic tables at the farmers market to enjoy your score and watch local and tourist alike mingle at the stalls.

The food is amazing and the price point is fantastic. However, since we have some family members with lots of food allergy issues (gluten free, dairy free), they were able to find the right thing for all of us. That was truly an incredible, thoughtful feat and we will absolutely be back next time we are in Hawaii. Service was great and they set great expectations since there were a lot of people ahead of us. Also the farmers market ambience was very relaxed and enjoyable.

An excellent Ruben sandwich. Had a hard time finding the location, but happy that I did. So don't give up. Finally found it on a farmers market, and not where Google Maps said that they would be. I had a side of tomato soup, but would skip next time as the sandwich is big enough. If you are a Ruben fan, make sure to check the Red Barn out.

Red Barn serves up delicious sandwiches made with locally sourced goods from the Kamuela Farmer's Market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Grab a plate, enjoy the rolling green pastures and the Kohala mountains in the distance and mingle with the locals and tourists, alike. Our kids scarfed down the "Cheesy" grilled cheese and tomato soup. We enjoyed the "Frenchman" mushroom, carmelized onions with truffle oil sandwich, the "Swine" pulled pork sliders, and the "Beast" loaded nachos. The portions are generous and the quality of ingredients top notch. We made two stops during our recent stay and got to chat with Will and April on the second visit as they closed up shop. They are real good people and produce a wonderful product.

Excellent food truck in northern Hawaii! We had added this on the trip specifically because of the positive yelp reviews. Definitely one for the books.

We shared the 3 meat plate and still had leftovers. It looked and smelled so good we grabbed a blanket and ate on the grassy area next to the parking lot. Also got the pancit and a couple packs of suman (rice cakes wrapped in banana leaves) They reminded us of the suman in the Philippines - so yummy! Service was friendly and efficient. The sauce was tasty, though didn't have any of the pineapple flavor that some Huli Huli chicken has and overall the meat was a bit bland. If you just get a half chicken, they put it in a plastic bag so very hard to eat, especially since it is piping hot. Hot food in a plastic bag is also not a good idea as the plasticizers can leach into the food and none of us need more microplastics in our food! If you can plan ahead, bring your own plate and a knife and fork instead. You will also need to take it somewhere to eat if you want to site down, or like we and many others did, eat it off of your tailgate or hood of your car.

I had been planning this destination wedding from California and it was not easy choosing vendors blindly without ever trying the food! But the food looked great on their IG page and after communicating with Mark, he definitely knew what he was doing. He gave me some recommendations since I wanted a Hawaiian-Filipino theme. The bbq skewers, bistek, pancit, macaroni salad + poke station and more was all soooo good. They were still good the next day after being slightly hungover. Mahalo to Mark and his team! I recommend their catering to anyone.
