Had the Singapore Mei Fun, it's over $10.00 and comes with no rice. I told them to hold the pork and keep the chix and shrimp and give extra veggies instead of the pork. I got it to go. Once home, I was disappointed, 95% noodles and 5% veggies, chix and shrimp. Cut the noodles back 25% and add 30% more ingredients. Or cut the price in 1/2. Stopped in for lunch to go. Menu is very extensive and reasonably priced with large portions. I got the Sesame Tofu. The sauce is alright, not sugary like other Sesame sauces. It is a bit bland and could use more spice but it hits the spot. Certainly not the best I've had, but not the worst either. Service is quick. read more

The place is half a thrift shop selling cheap toy and clothes and half restaurant Forewarning- Wasn't expecting much from this place to start Ordered online (2pm) and arrived to pick it up 30min later and they hadn't even started it. They said I needed to put my arrival time in the special instructions section of order form. Bathroom was usable but so dirty. Restaurant had some dirty dishes and food on tables but no customers They made my order. Egg drop Soup was not warm and so thick and gelatinous Broccoli was swimming in the "brown sauce". Extremely sweet Lo mein (along with everything else) had no flavor. The first time I ordered, I got shrimp fried rice and some crab Ragan's what arrived to me was shrimp fried rice with no shrimp and crab Rangoon's. and on top of that they don't really send you any silverware. But the food was good even though I did not have any shrimp the delivery was very fast and very friendly. I did order a second time and told them about how my first order was messed up and they did seem to sympathize and they apologized to me. I didn't feel like going out again once I checked into my hotel, so I decided I'd like something delivered. There is no Domino's here and based on other Yelp reviews, I decided to try the Red Apple. (How can there be no Domino's in a college town? There's one in Waverly for Wartburg not in CF for UNI? Whoda thunk it ? On top of it all, the Dominos in Waterloo won't deliver to Cedar Falls, so to heck with them!) I tried to place an order online. Many restaurants, as Red Apple has done, now subscribe to third party vendors to post as their own website which adds online order capabilities. Red Apple's third-party ordering site doesn't seem to allow delivery to an address other than the billing address for your credit card. Kinda dumb, as that eliminates folks like me, who are in a hotel room. (Maybe I just didn't figure it out, I was using my cell phone and the text is really, really small.) So I gave up and just called in my order. My order was taken quickly, my credit card info was processed quickly, and my order was on its way. I ordered chicken with mixed vegetables and I also had to order vegetable soup in order to get my order up to their $10 threshold for delivery. In about 45 minutes, a smiling delivery guy was at my door. The soup was average at best, beef stock with a few vegetables in it, if I ever return to CF or Waterloo, I'll pass on the vegetable soup. But my chicken dish was grand! Instead of white rice, I substituted chicken fried rice, an option I've not encountered in a Chinese restaurant before. The fried rice was a bit on the dry side but with the addition of the sauce from my chicken dish, it was very nice alternative to the usual white rice. In the main course, I found several pieces of breast meat, sliced thinly, tender and juicy. The vegetables of varying kinds (broccoli, carrots, water chestnuts, mushrooms, onions, celery) were flavorful and cooked just right, on the al dente side. The sauce was of the right consistency, flavorful and topped off the dish perfectly. Next time I am in the Cedar Falls/Waterloo area, I will keep the Red Apple in mind, perhaps I'll even visit there. I gladly recommend the Red Apple. read more

Great place. Very convenient to the Waterloo Convention Center (Five Sullivan Brothers). It's located on 4th Street between Washington Street and Jefferson Street. It's a combo Chinese and Japanese restaurant with an extensive menu. They also do take out, and delivery to Waterloo, Evansdale, Cedar Falls, Hudson, Washburn, and Elkrun Heights. I ordered sweet and sour chicken. I did not realize that sweet and sour chicken is breaded/coated. I'm allergic to flour. I apologized to them and said that I could not eat. The owner replaced the dish with chicken and broccoli with my approval for FREE. He did say that this dish is always prepared wiht the chicken as breaded. He was very nice about it. I recommend Red Apple because it is CLEAN, and service is very good. read more

I love red apple! The food is great--I've never had a bad dish! The customer service is great! The last time I ordered was during a pretty bad snow storm and thought I was inconveniencing them since I had it delivered instead of pick up but they were super nice about it. I highly reccomend them since they have the best Chinese in the cedar valley! read more

Horrible, if there were 0 stars then that would be my rating. We had Shrimp Toast=saturated in oil. Crab Rangoons= only item we ordered that we completed. Sesame Tofu = Huge tofu lover, did NOT love this. Coated with a really thick batter , not enjoyable. Dragon & Phoenix (General S Chicken "mostly batter"& Schetwan Shrimp) drowned in a gelatinous sauce. We left most of the $35 we had ordered. read more

Save your time. Possibly the dirtiest restaurant I have ever been in. Half is dusty collection of trinkets. Went in the restaurant side had 4 tables that were still dirty, at 2 pm and place was empty. Floor was filthy, stuff everywhere, on counters, etc. Left. I don't know if they changed there chicken I'm the last five yrs or so. But the chicken is gross and hard. The rice smells funny like it's old and just rewarm up. The egg rolls were gross and crunchy. We decided to try this place again, we were there about five yrs ago waiting for our food and the guy cooking was picking his nose. Had to throw in this awesome update on great customer service... Today -- I ordered lunch to be delivered -- and ordered my favorite - the sesame tofu. Five minutes later the owner calls me to apologize that she was out of tofu, and the food delivery hadn't come in with it yet. She asked if she could make me something else -- so I switched it to General Tso's... she told me that there is a price difference -- but for the inconvenience she would like to cover the difference. I told her this was not a problem -- and to not worry about the change, and that I understand these things happen. When the delivery arrived -- the restaurant had sent a gift along with it -- a kitschy red and jade (?) decoration. Of course -- I'm sure this token didn't cost much -- but I was so amazed that they were so focused on customer service; and it was a total surprise! read more

This is a nice little Chinese restaraunt right in the heart of downtown Waterloo. It looks like your run of the mill fast food Chinese place. I've never had a bad dish here. Right now, I'm battling a cold & on the road again, and I could really go for a good bowl of Pho, but there are no Vietnamese restaraunts in these two cities ( sucks! ). So I Came here & ordered a bowl of beef noodle soup. It's not Pho, but it sure hit the spot! And like other reviewers said, the service here is great. Place is an epic miss. Wouldn't eat there again if you paid me. I would rather eat at Hardee's sober! The woman who takes phone orders is absolutely oblivious to actually listening to you...took my order wrong then when I called to correct the situation I was given a lecture on how it was my fault she didn't get the order correct... actually insulting me...which I found funny because she had time to do that, yet couldn't get my order correct. The order was only for 3 items...I only received 2. The problem was not remedied...like I said she made it my fault. Seriously poor costumer service is a gross understatement. There is also a minimum order requirement and a substantial delivery fee (in comparison to other restaurants) that is not disclosed...and it took 50 minutes to deliver. I ordered the Phoenix dish...the general tsos chicken and the shrimp dish were served mixed together, which made it inedible. This place is filthy! I would never eat here again. I have ordered delivery from here before and the food is ok but the inside is disgusting. I asked the waitress to clean our table and she brought over a rag and windex and sprayed the table and wiped it down with a dirty rag and left wet pieces of rice behind. The kitchen is filthy also. The thing we love about Red Apple is that they deliver. The food is good, especially the crab rangoons, which are crispy and creamy. The potstickers (steamed dumplings) have a dough that is too thick, although the filling is tasty. Hot Sour soup is very good and they give you the crispy "crackers" with it. What a disappointment. Traveling through Waterloo we stopped here for carry out. Slow service. While eating egg rolls grease poured out all over new shirt which is now ruined. Never had an egg roll that dripped grease. Hot and Spicy soup had a layer of grease on top so didn't eat it. The Sesame Chicken had an odd taste so never finished it. My husband has never liked Red Apple, so I order it every so often when he is out of town. No one in the area can make garlic broccoli like Red Apple and normally it is beyond delicious. I had heard some rumors about how dirty the kitchen is, and that they have horrible hygiene and smoking practices... but the other night I really wanted that garlic broccoli and went against that gut feeling that I shouldn't order from a place that is believed to be gross. First of all, it took an hour for it to be delivered. Not a huge deal, I just wish that there was some kind of notification that it was going to take so long (they use an outside app for ordering so not their fault) because I would have ordered elsewhere. It finally arrived and I dug in! Normally, I eat about half of my serving and save the rest for another meal, but I think I took 5 bites and felt kind of full, maybe sick but I think just full. I tried the lo'mein (which is normally a safe bet at any Chinese eatery) and it was absolutely awful! I threw it away, which I don't think I have ever in my whole life thrown away noodles! I ate probably 1/4 of my main dish and just couldn't take any more. I put it in the fridge and figured it'd be better the next day. I had to lay around for a couple hours because I felt very heavy and kind of sick. Didn't chalk it up to the food, but, apparently I was right. The next morning (I ate at 7 PM and woke up at 9 AM) I threw up every bite of food that I ate, and some of it was still in mostly whole form, which means apparently that I'm not good at chewing and apparently this "food" isn't good at digesting. I'm not going to go into any detail of what else came out of me, but I am sure you can imagine. This isn't a place I would recommend, and I would in fact warn against it, unless you love being sick. As far as the rumors, I can't say they are true, there are rumors about literally every place you will eat, but after my last dinner here, I can't say I don't believe them. Eat at your own risk and hopefully you have better luck than me!! I do think the health department needs to come to this place. read more
