GF and I went on Sunday night. The place was about half full so of course everyone was seated together in one half of the restaurant. I read a review from a few years ago about the host being 11 or 12 years old and that host has not aged a bit. There were a lot of food options and plenty to eat. When we asked about the item all we got was "Not homemade" "We not make here", then they offered to make us a new batch, from the same bag... This has long been a favorite buffet. Food is hot and lots of choices. Sushi has been limited since COVID. Expect variety of customers, usually respectable. Did find my booth caught between 2 other booths of people about to get into a fight over a woman. I still go there but now by myself. read more

So...going to guess that some of the reviews below are from over realistic idealists or a rival restaurant. Food was good. Sushi is basic California rolls. They have a really nice stir fry cook! Steam buns, crab ragoons, egg rolls are all delicious. Soup was hot and fresh. Service was amazing. Addressing the booths. The place is clean. They could use a different cleaner with a slight fragrance (no bleach) to change the aged building smells. The booths have lost service of their glamour, but these can be reupholstered relatively inexpensively. A suggestion to the owners is to do this or change the booths to wood and just change the pads. This is a fine establishment and you can eat a lot for very little. So Good food, clean, good service and value for money. I'll be back! read more

We were honestly worried about eating here because the reviews on Yelp were so bad but to be completely honest with you, I thought it was a lot better than a lot of the other Chinese buffets we've been to between Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, and Waterloo. Going in with extremely low expectations made our dinner a huge success. We were looking for some place cheap to eat after a day at the waterpark and we took a chance and ate here. Even for dinner pricing the deal was good. The food selection was a lot smaller than other Chinese buffets in the area but honestly what they had out was pretty good. I ate my fair share of frog legs, tiny clams, cheese mussels, stir fried string beans, fried shrimp, steamed fish, crab rangoons, etc. I definitely didn't touch any of the sushi, but other than that, everything looked fine. They were a little slow at refilling some of the pans when they emptied out. We also came at a time that was pretty dead (before the dinner rush started) so some of the food looked like it had probably been sitting in the warmers a bit too long. But if something looks past it's prime just don't take it, pretty simple rule. Dining area was clean, service was good, price was good. Took my wife for lunch here on Friday. Arrived right at 11 when the opened. Half of the restaurant was dark, boxes were strewn all over the back area. Buffet area was full, but most of the food was cold, dried out and bland. We had to get our own drinks, our own napkins and eating utensils. Price was $10.95 for the lunch buffet, dinner is around $13.95. Think it's overpriced for what you get. Cold, bland, dried out food and no service. We both agreed Burger King would of been better, at least the food would of been warm and had something akin to flavor. I don't think we will eat there again. read more

The place needs shut down. The booths and chairs are peeling- GROSS. Food was less the acceptable. Grapes have seeds. Melon cut too big. Canned fruit. The Fried foods are not really identifiable. No recipes or menus listed for allergies or dieting needs. Makes it super difficult to track for diabetes and weight control. I'm genuinely questioning the food safe practices here. Despite the low rating I have given, I eat at Hibachi Sushi Buffet fairly often. When either I, or my charming companion, are feeling too tired to enjoy a proper dining experience or too rushed to go to a restaurant and wait for food to be prepared, HSB is our dive of choice. When Hibachi Sushi Buffet was new, and still trying to impress people, the quality was significantly better. Had I chosen to write a review back then, I would have been more generous in handing out stars. The food here is passable, or at least sort of close to passable. The meat is questionable, but the ample sauces serve to almost convince one that they are eating good food. The "sushi" here has dropped in quality far more than anything else in the buffet since its opening. While at first they provided a good variety of common recognizable sushi (maki and nigiri both), they have fallen to making a number of uninspired variants of California Rolls and odd little concoctions with smears of wasabi or other pastes on top of them. You will no longer find no tuna or eel here. If you are low on time, and in the mood for quantity over quality, then HSB isn't bad. The staff are pleasant, attentive, and friendly while the dining area feels relatively clean for an Asian buffet. That having been said, if time is not an issue, you can drive a few blocks to Golden China and enjoy generous portions of food of much higher quality in a far superior environment. read more

There are a few bad reviews that are old. I'm from out of state. Dropped in and it's nice, very clean. The good was fresh and hot with a great variety. There is a drink machine and you get your own silverware but that's fine. Once you pay at the front you're pretty much on your own but you don't miss out on anything. ZERO STARS!!!! My daughter and I were car shopping in Waterloo. Neither of us are overly familiar with this town and wanted to try something a little different....walking in we immediatly regretted our decision but since you pay before you eat (now we know why), we figured we might as well give it a try. To be brutally honest, this was the absolute WORST restaraunt I've ever been to in my 44 years on this earth. Aside from the fact that the hot food on the buffet was competely cold if not room temp at best, nearly all of it was overcooked or had simply been sitting there for many hours....it's not as if we walked in at closing time...mind you, this was during regular supper hours. The best thing I can say about this place was that the ice in the drinks was cold....which by the way, you get the priveledge of getting to go behind the waiters station to get your own cup, drink, silverware and napkins. Thats fine, a bit odd but hey, my legs aren't broke and I get it...short staffed perhaps, OK. On our way out I briefly considered asking for my money back, not really my style but it was a $45 meal (or maybe I had just paid for a long night of food poisoning). In the end, I decided not to request the refund as the "staff member" standing at the register was a child of approximately 12-13 years old...insert eye roll here. How does one screw up tried-and-true classic Chinese buffet items like broccoli beef and General Tso's chicken to the point where they are inedible? I don't know, but this place manages that. My last dining experience there was stupefyingly awful. My friend and I are given the worst table in the place; near the cash register, directly behind an employee loudly organizing silverware, adjacent to one of the employee's small kids running amok out of boredom. Our drinks weren't refilled once, and there's the food, which makes that of the microwave variety look good. Chewy beef, dry chicken, soggy crab rangoons, and shrimp that have me considering a visit to a gastrointestinal specialist. Need I say more? I took my family here for the first time last week. The outside was nice as well as the inside. Clean and very orderly. I give it one star for its cleanliness. And that is the only thing this place had going for it. The food was borderline cold and looked as if nothing had been cooked for a while. The staff was rude and the food was overpriced. As a local my family and i used to go there pretty often, though the food is a 5 out of 10 the service is a solid 1 out of 10. The staff is extremely lazy and not very kind. They all walk around as if no ones around. After having our meal we go to counter. Standing there the same two workers completely acting as if we were not there again. I know they saw us because they looked me in my face. Meh....polite clean quiet but nothing especially outstanding. The wonton soup is actually a bomb a** miso with lots of seaweed and tofu. The bathroom is EXTREMELY clean. Refreshing considering most buffet bathrooms require a hazmat suit to enter. The pork dumplings are spicy and delicious. This is a place more geared towards the elderly and to put it nicely people with bigger appetites. read more
