I've always enjoyed my visits to this place. Luckily on this trip to Chi, my friend wanted to stop by and get a drink while picking up a few bottles. The left side contains a bar area along with areas for seating. They also have limited snack options which is a very nice option to have. The right side contains their stock of wines available for sale by the bottle. TWe started off on the bar side and ordered a couple of glasses of wine along with half a dozen oysters. The oysters were soo good. And bonus- only a $1 each! After we finished hanging out and chatting, my friend stopped by the shop so she could pick up her wine club shipment. The service is always great here and today was no exception. The people there are very laid back and friendly. What a bizarre experience - came in hoping to be able to get a glass of wine. The staff wasn't rude but fairly unfriendly and unhelpful. Seems like they're not currently doing any indoor dining and do have a few outside seats available . The staff gave us pretty limited information on the wine (red, white or rosé) by the glass. After we ordered a drink he came by and dropped them off with pretty limited info on what we were drinking but when he did let us know (after us asking) he was very knowledgeable. I love it so much, I come by myself sometimes for the sole pleasure of receiving always very insightful recommendations ("this wine has a mushroomy, nuanced flavor") from their friendly/knowledgeable staff when literally all I know about wine is "This is a white." Regardless, I absolutely love their wine selection and am delighted every single time with their complex, interesting rotations. When with a group of people, I love getting the full plate of all charcuterie and all cheeses - it's more than enough to share among 4-5. Plus, the fresh, buttery toasted bread just keeps coming . Wanted so badly to like this place because we live so close but both times we've walked in, the staff did not acknowledge us at all. We had to walk around asking people if they worked there to even find an employee. The inside of this store has lots of exposed brick and wood that creates a rustic atmosphere. If you are able to, you should try coming on a Thursday evening or Saturday afternoon to experience one of their free wine tastings. It is so ideal to be able to try a sample of a wine that you are interested in before buying a whole bottle. I think that almost everyone has ran into the situation where they thought that they would like a particular wine, but then find out that they hate it. All of this after spending hard earned money for that bottle of wine. There is a wonderful variety of wines in this store, and a majority of the wines tend to be $15+ for a bottle. Although I do feel a bit reserved when asking questions they are very friendly, knowledgeable and welcoming. Red & White, what a delight. The staff is friendly, they offer you a taste before you commit to a wine, and they give you nice insight into the wine you choose. The bar is pretty nice, and the room is intimate. Sadly, their acoustics are bad. The room is all glass and cement, so there is no sound buffering going on. With more than 4 people in the room, expect to shout to your date, friends, or to staff so they can hear. Additionally, they have a full bar, but limited in their ability to make basic drinks. I would have loved to have stayed longer once I was ready to switch to a cocktail. In the future, I'll be in for a couple glasses of wine, and then venture elsewhere for the nightcap. Cutest little wine shop in Bucktown. They sell red and whites from a variety of regions, all natural winemakers (no herbicides, pesticides or chemicals on their property). There's also a small restaurant area where you can order food and wine. Their food menu is small and changes frequently but is very high quality and pairs well. We tried the Winter Salad, Olives, Anchovy Toast, and made our own cheese/charcuterie plate. All was delicious. That night I tried a glass of Judith Beck (Austrian red) which was lovely and very easy to drink. They have wine tastings every Saturday from 1-4pm, each time from a different winemaker. It costs $10 but it goes towards the purchase of any bottle of wine/liquor in the store. It's a steal! You'll see a crowd of people at the back of the store, just find someone who works there to pay, and squeeze in to get your wine on. Also join their mailing list since they have random free wine tastings throughout the week as well! read more

My two favorite things in life are wine and cheese so I am pretty much in heaven at Red and White Wines. It's the perfect romantic date/friend date spot as it's dimly lit, yet relaxed and a smaller space. The service is good and they are pretty attentive with water and cleaning up the table. They also have pretty napkins and change your plates/silverware for each course. They don't have a lot of affordable wine by the glass or bottle so it is more of a splurge-kind of place. They do have an excellent variety of wine for many different palates (they even have orange wine!). Their food is excellent and goes perfectly with their wine! They have small plates and a cheese board so get ready to share with your dining companions. The plates are smaller and pricey so it is more of a splurge but EVERYTHING was super delicious. They also have a decent variety of vegetarian options and of course pescatarian options. We started with the marinated olives and pickled mushrooms, which were both perfectly acidic and satisfying. To get that perfect wine and cheese experience, we ordered the cheese board, which came with 4 different types of cheese, a raspberry jam, and binge-worthy crostini for $24. Two out of the four cheeses really stood out: A goat brie and blue cheese. The two other ones were more mild and less exciting. They also have the location listed of where the cheese came from, which gives me the illusion that the cheese came from non-factory farmed cows in Vermont and France. I don't know for sure but it helped me feel slightly less guilty eating cheese (I don't eat it at home because of the unethical dairy industry). For the heavier plates, we shared the mushroom soup - a perfect, hearty bowl of umami-goodness with a bit of crème fraiche but if you don't like crème fraiche (like myself) you can easily remove it. It reminded me of a cozy Hungarian mushroom soup without the dill and had a really perfect, creamy texture. Our last course was the Smoked Trout, which was insanely delicious with a perfect amount of saltiness coming from the trout, mustard grains, and crispy trout skin. I love coming here for their $10 wine tastings every Saturday (which can be put towards purchasing a bottle of wine) because it's affordable and a great way to enjoy their diverse wine. I also love coming here for fancier dinners because everything is extremely sophisticated and flavorful. I just wish they had more affordable wine options by the glass and bottle. read more

Awesome wine shop in Bucktown. They specialize in eclectic and affordable wines. Nothing like the big warehouses like Sam's and Binny's, this place is way more personal and has character. They are always super knowledgeable and provide great recommendations. The free wine tastings on Saturdays from 3:00 - 5:00pm are always good, however its getting more and more popular recently. As such, I try to go later than earlier. If you get there around 4:30 pm usually most of the people are gone and you can actually talk to the people pouring the tasting whereas at 3:00 pm the room is totally packed and uncomfortable. This is a great local shop with an wine selection that has been chosen with great care. Their prices are very reasonable and outstanding service. read more

I really dig Red & White. First, its a great looking independent store. I love the wine on the walls at eye level. Very catchy if you ask me. Second, the staff is very well informed. I have asked for suggestions many times and they have been right on the money usually. Third, I love the weekend tastings. I haven't been to many, but the intimate setting to meet the producers is a great way to go. Its fun to get to talk to the people that actually make he wine (sometimes they even have vineyard dirt still under their nails). And fourth, i would sy on average their wines are reasonable priced. You won't find lots of expensive bottles here, nor will you find $4 bottles of grape juice that Trader Joe's carries (I love Trader Joe's, but just not their wine selection. I suppose the only knock on the place is that they don't have huge supply and with a store that size they can only carry so much. This doesn't make me pine for Sam's or Binny's, but it's the only drawback i can think of. read more

We went for the free wine tasting on Thursdays from 6-8. I think the website says 6-9? In any case I felt very awkward when I first walked in because theres no one that explains what to do but I grabbed a glass and walked toward the crowd. They had 3 wine makers offering 3 tastings each. They were all soooo delicious. You actually get a chance to talk to the winemakers and ask them anything about the wines/the wine process. It was really cool to pick their brain because as much as I love wine, I didn't know too much about grapes/varietals/wine culture. Miiight have been tipsy by the end of the tastings. I ended up buying one of the white wines from one of the wine makers and i'm so excited to drink it! It was delicious. read more

Thanks to my cousin Alma, I am becoming a fan of natural wines (natty, she calls them). We arrived late on a Friday night and Nathan was so incredibly helpful. I'm not an expert on wines but he was very knowledgeable and patient with all our questions. My husband feared that I was dragging him to a fancy wine shop (aka $$$) but it turns out there's a wide price range. Tough spot to review. Had heard good things but today was my first stop in. Trying to grab a bottle for a byob dinner. The wine is all good quality but absolutely nothing is labeled. Was approached a couple times to see "if I have questions" but it seemed overwhelming to point at every single bottle and ask, "origin? grapes? vintage? price?" Spent twenty minutes turning every bottle of white wine around to read the labels. All great importers! Almost no information! Grabbed a couple bottles to try to narrow down some choices. One staff member had no clue, another staff member summed them up neatly. Used those three to triangulate to a bottle of Loire Chenin from an lesser know appellation. I'm kind of amazed that this place exists in my neighborhood. It's the perfect stop before Irazu, across the street where it's BYOB. This is also a great place to pick up a bottle if you are grabbing a sandwich from the deli next door. The wines are very affordable, and I've seen saki, gin, scotch, and other types of alcohol as well. I wandered in after doing some shopping prior to, and I felt like I was almost at an art gallery even though it's not. It's kind of spacious so there's an ambiance that enables you to walk and talk all over about wine or anything. The staff person is very helpful and friendly, and recommended a delicious Spatlese Reisling. This is going to be a great summer walk on over. I'm certain that they do wine tastings as I've passed by on many a nights, and they are open a little later than I thought they'd be. read more

Very glad this place is in the neighborhood. it's a pretty big spot and the walls are adorned with bottles of wine in decorative shelving. I'm not a wine dude so i asked the dude (Sean i think was his name) for a simple wine to take to a holiday party. He was very friendly and showed me a couple of bottles in the 15-20 dollar range i quoted. I picked one for 15 dollars that was impressed with the taste. It seems the prices here can go from $10 to around $40...very cool for us Bucktown folk or anyone near the western blue line stop. It probably helps that the store is across the street from a BYOB (Irazu), so the Irazu drunks who forget alcohol can hop over and pick up some wine. Alas, my trip is more than a hop over, more like a short trot. Sean told me they have tastings on Saturday afternoons, so i'll definitely have to check one out soon. I want to like this shop, I really do. There are times when I've gone in and had great service - so that's why I've given it so many attempts. It's just that every other time I go in here, I get the guy who doesn't even acknowledge I'm there and is too busy looking at his computer to help me. Here's a news flash guy - I didn't just happen in here by mistake and you don't sell anything other than booze, so if you would get off your tush and offer me help, its a guaranteed sale. I live right around the corner - but yet I find myself driving all the way to Binny's to purchase most of my wine because I'm tired of dealing with the attitude at Red & White.
