Covid Review: My friend was defending their dissertation and I wanted to mark the occasion with a gift. A celebratory bottle of champagne. Only one problem, I live in sunny Southern California and they live in Chicago. At first I tried to send it with Amazon Fresh, but they didn't have any deliveries on the day of the defense. Using trusty Yelp, I found Rayan's. They had good reviews and a website where you could buy something and have it delivered. I am all about supporting local businesses and this one is my go to store when I need a quick adult beverage in walking distance. Rayan's is small but mighty. They have a great cross section of wines, beers and spirits with competitive prices. They have champagnes and sparkling wines, so that right there is a winner for me. It is also nice that they have a small food selection in the corner next to the cooler with the sparkling wines. Nothing expansive, but if you are looking for some quick noshy things like cheese, Kerrysgold butter for toast points, meats for antipasto trays, they have it. It really comes in handy for those last minute shindigs on the balcony on unexpected nice days in the winter. Again like for the adult beverages, the prices on these items are decent. Rayan's also does tasting. Today there was one for SipSmith gin. Not sure what the mixer was, but it perfectly complemented the gin, giving a slight sweet after taste with no bitterness. This is an amazing store. From the outside, it doesn't look like much, but don't judge this book by its cover. My bf lives close to here, I've stopped in a few times to pick up a bottle of wine or some beer by myself. The inside is clean, bright, and they have way more than just liquor!! They have a good selection of wine and beer. They also have some interesting artisan items! What really impressed me is that my bf had never been here. He needed to pick up some beer for thanksgiving but didn't want to go all the way to Target or Jewel. I told him to go to Rayan's and he said no, that's a crappy store despite never having been there. I dragged him there, and he was completely shocked at how awesome this place is. Needless to say, this is his go-to now. My only complaint is that the staff isn't particularly good. I've seen them help some customers, but other times they seem to be more interested in chatting with one another. Seeing as I've never needed help and prefer to browse without someone breathing down my neck, this isn't a deterrent. Don't let the exterior fool you- this store is great! read more

Also, do they have permission to sell Costco Kirkland Brand toilet paper six pack rolls for a dollar a roll plus tax for a product they are not licensed to distribute. I'm a fan of this place. Off the top, the guys working here are extremely friendly. I've bought enough booze from them that they've started to recommend beer to me before I've picked up a bottle that day...and it has always been something that I liked. It is an oddly comforting yet slightly sad feeling when my favorite liquor store recognizes me. Selection-I typically buy the bombers/pints of beer. I like how they have a nice variety! They have beer from all ranges of breweries with a nice blend of seasonal, small batch, and stand-bys. The 6 pack selection is pretty decent too. This is all the more impressive when you realize that this joint is pretty small. Like, there are 7/11's in the Loop bigger than this entire store. I haven't been going here that long (maybe 5 months?), but the location is nice. They have around 8 parking spots behind the building for customer use. The store is always clean, well light, etc. They have vendors come in and do tastings!! I tried a few new Lake Front Brewing beers via one of their tastings. So, we all know I've done my fair share of time in the liquor and wine stores don't we? Don't judge. Its an occupational hazard. My due diligence is your gain. Cuz I have the 411 on whats up and can hook a brother and a sister out by pointing them in the right direction. Let's break this down: 1) Great wine selection for the equivalent of a convenience store. Yes there is Barefoot but there are great higher end wines, ports, sherries and spirits too. Frei Brothers Pinot Noir priced the same as the Jewelz with way less corporate greed. 2) You can buy some Lotto tickets, Genoa salami, Mission tortilla chips, some frozen pizza, a flask, chewing gum, insulated foam cups and eggs to go with your bubbles and sour mash whiskey, 3) They have regular tastings with various vendors so you can try before you buy thus avoiding the wine bottle roulette. 4) Near the front counter is a "Hot Deals" stack. Tonight's deal: UV103 Vodka (4xdistilledyo) 200ml only 2 for $5.00. That equals about fifteen cents a shot of pretty decent vodka. Don't do the math, I've done it for you. 5) Super friendly staff. I mean as in "Hey, you can get a holiday gift pack with 2 awesome Maker's glasses for the same price. Put that back and let me get one for you" 6) Kegs: they deliver. And if you want some fancy schmancy brew, I bet if you asked real nice, they would special order it for you if you pre pay. Not sure, but most likely. 7) This is a family owned business and my extra dollar here warms my heart for the little guys. They know their customers by name as well as their dogs and they may or may not sometimes have a treat for Fido. Top that Binny's. They do have a $10 minimum on credit/debit cards which by-the-way-crazy-chick-who-claimed-to-work-for-Visa is not illegal and was part of legislation enacted well over a year ago to protect small merchants from losing money while remaining competitive. read more

I was surprised when I came here to buy some cheap sparkling wine for NYE, and they actually stocked Moet & Chandon. That's real champagne! Granted, I bought a bottle from Jewel just a few weeks earlier, it was just a pleasant surprise. My mission was still to go cheap so I didn't buy the $40 bottle of champagne. I was so impressed with their service. While other folks thought it would be incredibly difficult to get a keg of Miller Lite (??), Rayan's had NO problem with it. In fact, they even said they would deliver it for me at a cost that was basically negligible. In the end, I had a keg that was delivered for just a little over $100. With just about 165 12 oz. servings, we're talking about $0.70 per serving. I was happy. My guests were happy. And we all drank a lot of beer. Long story short... If you need a keg, go to Rayan's. I'm not sure who this Rayan character is.. but several buildings along the 4000N corridor of Clark bear his name. Anyway, this store focuses on the booze, as the name implies, but also happens to have other things you need/want from time to time like M&Ms, condoms & Doritos. The guys at the counter get to know their regulars and are all quite friendly. I don't get carded here, but maybe its because I'm old (25) and I've bought alcohol here before. I am, however, asked for ID when I pay by debit because the cashiers actually look at the back of the card (thank you!). This store also has the best selection of Arizona Iced Teas in the tall cans that I have seen anywhere.. and it includes my beloved watermelon and Arnold Palmer flavors! Rayan's definitely has a great beer selection. In fact better than most. However, where they strive the most is in their extremely friendly and reasonable customer service. It proves that family owned businesses done right are the basis for a successful Chicago business. I recently purchased a half barrel keg for a party we were having and I had some discrepancies with the keg itself. I casually mentioned the issue to the staff behind the counter when returning it and next thing I know, they're making phone calls and going above and beyond to correct the issue. I didn't even attempt to raise my voice nor did I receive any negative feedback from them. All I heard were apologies and promises to correct the situation. I was so taken aback by how quick they jumped into action to resolve the problem that I am still speechless. So beyond the quality beer selection, I recommend shopping here for the dedicated customer service. These guys figured out how to please the customer on a much higher level than most. I don't think that there's ever been a super amazing sale and the giant sale signs on the outside are outdated and no longer reflect the prices which is mildly irritating but the difference is only like a buck and the guy inside is always nice. In my mind I assume his name is Rayan. There is a bin of half price booze which may occasionally have some interesting wine or non-whiskey liquors. Its locally family owned which I like. The people who work there are very friendly. They actually remember my name! Is that a sign of alcoholism? The bud light is always the same as Jewel so no need to wait in those long checkout lines. A+ My girlfriend is always happy to find new wines on sale, so shes happy.. They always have some crazy sales on booze. The one I have been getting... 2 little bottles of makers mark for $20. Which is the same as a 750ml or fifth of makers for $20! Rayan's is a super convenient corner store. They generally have a pretty good "choose your own" 6 pack selection. They have a broad selection of craft beer and bombers as well. The buyer does a good job at bringing in the newest in craft beers as they become available. I appreciate the food selection that they have, fine(r) cheeses, kerrysgold butter, cage free eggs, Amy's products and generally healthier junk food. It's not every day that you find such a conscious place to pick up some necessities. Their prices on these items are generally pretty fair considering the quality. I have read some negative interactions had with the employees. I have to say, I've had good experiences overall. I bought some cheese; for Bloody Marie's, one Sunday it was a bit moldy, so I brought it back and they were very apologetic about the situation and let me grab another. They have vendors in store to do tastings pretty often, which is pretty fun and a good way to try new items without committing. I also love that they carry my favorite incense brand! It's really reasonable and makes the house smell amazing! read more

Rayan's Liquors had always been just a corner store that seemed a little leery and sad looking from the outside. Coming upon the New Year, I wanted to stock my new apartment's bar with a few liquid goodies. Since I'm fairly new to the Ravenswood area I rattled my brain to think of all the liquor store and only came up with Rayan's...must be that seller corner location. The interior has been completely renovated with a new tile floor and lighting that make it look nice, much larger than the outside offers, and a bit like a Mediterranean restaurant, but that's fine with me. It's a family owned business and seems as if every family member has their designated job (one as cashier, another for stocking, a third for bagging, etc). They have a large variety of items for all your needs, including snacks. Along two walls they have several fridges of cool liquors, mixers, wines and more. The prices are simply average and thankfully not over-priced, unlike much of the rest of the city. Best of all, the friendly employees who greeted us didn't watch our every move, even with our backpacks on. I have Rayan's Liquors to thank for my sanity. read more

I bought a keg for a bday/graduation party from Rayan's. When I returned the keg there was a misunderstanding about the deposit required. Regardless of the amount, I had proof on my bank statements. When I got the keg all they told me was to bring the card I used to pay for the keg when it was time to return it. However, this clerk told me I need a receipt and he started to be rude after I asked him if they can look it up on their POS System with my card. I told him that I will file a complaint with the BBB and his exact words were 'cut that better business bureau shit out!' I used one card to make the reservation and another card to make the purchase and this guy called me a liar and a piece of sh*t! I couldn't believe this so I asked him for his name to let the manager know but he didn't so I took a picture of him. This guy came around the counter trying to fight! This lady that worked there kicked him out and apologized and told me that he doesn't even work here (even though he was behind the counter and dealing with customers). She was able look up my transaction and finish the keg return. She 'apologized' but as I left she rolled her eyes and began laughing. As I left the store a customer who works at the UofI student legal services witnessed the confrontation told me to file a complaint and do something about this situation. These people I dealt with at Rayan's are very unprofessional and incompetent, I have never had an experience like this at a place of business. I am never supporting this place! Ok - the restaurant IS closed, and they have done a major remodeling of the whole place. I must say that they put a great amount of effort into the new space and it is looking amazing. Wonderful tile work on the floor and the glass mosaic tile around the columns looks really nice as well. They have doubled their capacity (at least) and will now begin to carry some more foodstuffs. I had no idea what time it was, all I knew was that Rayan's was right on the way, and 2 blocks from where I was going,,,Finally get there, and the doors are locked but there are a couple guys inside...which made me automatically see what time it was, it was 11:18, turns out this place closes at 11.
