DO NOT SHOP HERE EVEN IF IT'S AN EMERGENCY! Everyone knows that there is a premium charged to buy liquor at a small business wine and spirits store. I had to pick up a last minute item at Galleria for a party. I found my item and was shocked at the final price. I started doing the math in my head. The price charged was well above the addition of sales tax (10.25%) + cook county liquor tax ( rounding up 5%) and a credit card surcharge ($0.89). I asked the old white man with gray hair and beard why the final total was so high and he said that it was because Chicago sales tax is 12.5%!!! WHAT??? That was a bold face lie!!! I returned the next day to complain to the manager and he said "why do you give a F**k about a couple of dollars"!!! The audacity!!! We went to the store on Wells in Old Town on Wells. I feel it's a Rip off store.... We were in from out of town. Paid 29.99 for a bottle of Rum. Less than a block away another liquor store had the same bottle for 19.99. Don't buy here, in my opinion. read more

DONT SHOP HERE This is a neighborhood spot that I only ever go to if i'm in a pinch or need something last minute, that being said, I will not ever be returning. This place's prices are ridiculous to begin with and every time i've gone in here the old white guy with the beard is condescending & drinking in the middle of the day. Also they punch in whatever price they feel like charging you and don't stick to the price on the sticker which is already over priced. Went in here the other day and tried to buy a bag of ice, the guy charged me for it and then went to get the ice and said oops we're out. He just stood there before I said "well can I get refunded then?" because I had already paid. The man working wasn't able to refund me and told me to come back at a later time when the manager/owner was working. SO, I came back 2 days later when the manager was in who proceeded to be super rude and condescending, brushing me off like I really came back for a refund over a couple of dollars. Said he couldn't do a refund but said "you can have a candy bar". I insisted that I just wanted a refund for the product I was charged for and never received and he continued to be rude and said he couldn't do it. I'm not the first to notice a higher price and limited selection below $15 (I don't think there's a bottle of wine under $10), but Galleria has decided on a niche, and that's making a great wine recommendation for you at $15, $20, and adding great service! They're not the liquor store on the corner, so don't expect Yellow Tail or Miller High Life. They care about their wines and it shows. And they also deliver! Love it. Outrageous prices that are even higher than the secondary market for most rare/allocated beers and bourbons. Perhaps its because of the neighborhood its in and its clientele, but that's no excuse for how absolutely insane their prices are. For example, they're charging $95 dollars for a bottle of Weller 12 bourbon. Yes, this is hard to find, but they're selling it for 3x the retail price. That's outrageous and they're straight up gouging. I can go online and buy it at secondary prices significantly cheaper. I will not be back to this insane, unfair store that attempts to take advantage of its regulars. I will also let Sazerac Co. and their distributor know that they are gouging and feeding the secondary market so that they get cut-off. Avoid this crappy place like the plague. read more

I have given this place numerous tries but the third time is the last straw. Their prices are slightly marked up but cheaper than the liquor store on Clark st. so I decided to come here. Plus their beer selection is more to my liking vs. the other establishment. But my three experiences with the beer have been terrible. 1) First time I came in and was relieved to be at a liquor store that offers a variety of good beers that aren't marked up. Vast wine selection and a helper normally assists you with the wine selection. I never had the experience because I'm a beer guy but just throwing it out there. I was thrilled to see that they sell Bell's Two Hearted Ale. I bought a case and took it back to enjoy but unfortunately the beer wasn't that great. I have drank plenty of Bell's Two Hearted Ale and this six pack did not taste right. It was either infected or went bad. The beer did not taste fresh. 2) I decided to give them a second chance because I have had a bad batch of beer from another liquor store in the past and I'm all for second chances. Bought a six pack of Ellie's Brown Ale....once again the beer tasted flat/not right. 3) I was walking by and preferred to go here than Jewel so I thought third time is a charm right...? WRONG! I went with a common beer that I believed to be bought more frequently than other beers so the chances of the beer being fresh were higher....unfortunately the beer once again did not taste like a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale should taste.... And that is why I will not be returning to this liquor store anymore...sigh... They do have a dvd rental booth though..FYI. You can't help but smile on your first trip to Galleria when you notice the glass door connecting the store to the lobby of the Southport Brown Line station. Or, much more likely, you noticed that the lobby of your everyday train station had a not-so-secret door to a liquor shop right there. You thought, "is anyone else seeing this? Why aren't we all walking in here?!" Some days on public transit, even if it's the sleepy Brown Line, have you reaching for a drink as soon you're able. Kudos to Galleria for being the nearby bottle. That novelty of that entrance can wear off quickly for repeat customers, though, and eventually, Galleria's proximity to the station gives it more the feel of an airport duty-free shop than that of a liquor store. Some of the prices can leave that impression as well. I wonder if the shop wouldn't do a little better if it were located a few stores away from the station. Residents are good about supporting local businesses, but the train station connection can give the shop a big of a disconnected feeling. At the same time, it shouldn't make that big of a difference. After all, this neighborhood can boast of a pet training store, numerous boutiques, and several stationary/card stores. I think people can spring a few extra bucks on their alcohol purchases. My visits here were regular when the Paulina stop was under construction and are now only sporadic at best. I have liquor stores much closer to me in need of patronizing, but I wish Galleria the best. Everyone deserves to have a decent liquor store within their stomping grounds. Some prices are high here, but there are also some very good finds, and the selection will leave most satisfied. 3.5 rounded up to 4. They get props for the cool mosaic sign. I LOVE this liquor store. Unsure the man with the beards name but he is always super helpful. They let us bring the dog in and give him a treat. He now loves it so much that he pulls us in there when we pass. We always ask for recommendations and the man gives us something we love every time. Love this place! The owner is super friendly and always offers his expertise when I don't know what to get and he has been spot on every time. The location is super convenient and they carry a pretty big selection compared to other specialty stores. Consistently the most overprice liquor store in the city. Not just by a dollar or two either. For a bottle of beer (yes the ever desired Bourbon County variants) they charge over 100% markup. MSRP should be about $25-28 and Galleria, all locations, charged a ridiculous $60 a bottle. Same thing in previous years. Despicable owners and the employees all agree. Hope that Goose Island stops distributing to these stores as they clearly have no respect for their customers. read more

I loved this little liquor store! Within walking distance of my brother's house, I'm sure this will be a frequent stop. We were able to quickly find what we needed, and at competitive prices. But more than being convenient, the staff was lovely. The man who rang us up insisted that we take a free lime for our mules, and then instructed us to each take a water so we could stay hydrated! He was friendly and funny. He gestured to a man doing a wine tasting in the middle of the store. "Go see him. He's bored." Haha. Okay. Glad we did! He had a $15 Lodi Petite Sirah that was fantastic. We'd already paid, but we took a picture so we could keep it handy. I don't think the man doing the tasting was an employee, maybe a wine rep? But he was nice too and thanked us for tasting the wines. I just love that in the middle of the big city, you find wonderful neighborhoods like Southport, and a little liquor store with a truly small-town feel and friendliness. read more

Right off the Southport brown line, with a door leading right to the store, making this very convenient for a quick snack on the way somewhere (for me, usually orchestra rehearsal). As opposed to their extensive wine selection, with a good amount of labels I have not heard of for very cheap prices, the food here however is of the processed, packaged, preserved variety. Stopped here to wait off the rain and pick up a couple bottles of wine. I will start by saying that the wine is VERY overpriced compared to any other liquor or grocery store. The biggest issue I had was when I went to checkout. I was making small talk with the employee, and handed him my card, and he put it into the machine (without even telling me the total). He then proceeds to ask me for my PIN NUMBER. I then tell him I can enter it, and he reluctantly hands me the little credit card machine. I enter it, and as the receipt prints out, he lectures me on how no one can do anything with your PIN number unless they have your card, blah blah blah -- which I know is completely false because my father has been a banker his entire life, and he didn't raise an idiot. I feel like the employee was trying to take advantage of a younger looking female, and that does not sit well with me. I told him that I'm not an idiot and my dad is a banker, and I would never give my PIN number to anyone. He then gets an attitude and hands me my wine and card with a huff, and then I asked for a copy of my receipt, since I still don't know what he charged me at this point. Just from that interaction alone, I will never be coming back to this store, no matter how convenient. And I hope no one is stupid enough to actually give their PIN number to someone, especially some shady employee at a small liquor store, but I'm sure some have, which is unfortunate. read more

Very convenient with a decent selection of wines between $10-15 a bottle, Galleria doesn't try to replace Binny's but definitely steps it up from the standard corner liquor store. Besides the wine, they've also got some decent craft-beer representation. As other reviewers have mentioned, their liquor is a bit overpriced. Also, they have a wine tasting for free on Saturdays from 3-6pm. Unlike many other places, their featured vintages include a few decent selections each week. read more

I live down the street so that is why I come here. I probably wouldn't go out of my way if it wasn't so convenient for me. Regardless they have some "off the beaten path" bottles of wine. The staff is very knowledgeable. I think his name is Mark, who has a really great understanding of the wine and has exceptional customer service. My girlfriend and I were walking down the street near the Brown Line Train at Southport & passing a liquor store when this very nice man (Richard ) said " Hello please come in to our wine tasting" I said "We're not shopping for any wine and he said " That's cool- don't feel compelled to do anything but taste".  with the heck, we went in to taste some wine am=nd am I ever happy we did. I wound up buying a really nice Pinot at a very good price and we each laughed so hard you would have thought we were at 2nd City. Richard and Doug (?) had a banter that was hilarious and the store was like the Art Institute. I really don't understand the comments about price, but maybe others haven't been as lucky as I have. I've consistently found remarkable wines in the 10-15 dollar price range. While they may have some $7 options at CVS, those wines taste like they cost $7. Ask someone for a recommendation and you'll be thrilled to find that these guys know what they're talking about and can find a bottle for any budget. This is a relatively new liquor and wine store that opened up on Southport, nestled into the el station. It looks cool from the outside, and the inside is an interesting mix of lots of wine, random fridges stocked with champagne and beer, and sodas and juices. However, they really mark up their wines (I guess not surprising, because it is in a convenient location right by the el and also, given the neighborhood in general). To make matters worse, when I went to purchase a bottle of Torrontes, they did not have it cold. To make matters really really worse, it was marked $8.99, but I ended up paying nearly $11! When I protested, the store cashier replied, "Tax is really high, it's 10%." Um, okay, even if that were true, 10% of $9 is not $2.01. What kind of racket is this? Major boo. One star for pretty store, one star for providing- alcohol-in-a-pinch. read more

I don't normally frequent the Southport area much anymore. Nonetheless, when I got a chance to check out the new digs this past weekend, with the new train stop and all, I was really impressed with Galleria Liqueurs! I don't know how long these guys have been around, but this shop is golden. As a wine freak, I was really impressed with the great selection. They had some really oddball and rare California reds hanging around. It's not often you see stuff like Pahlmeyer and Far Niente in a retail store...I thought they were just restaurant wines. Their French, Italian and Australian sections are excellent and I found a ton of great stuff that I love and even more selections that I wasn't familiar with, but couldn't wait to try! The prices were very fair. Maybe a dollar more on some stuff, but that's to be expected for an independent store. I've worked in the industry, so I realize that the smaller shops don't get the bigger deals on a lot of stuff like Sam's does. The bargain tables are a nice touch for people who don't want to lay down anything over $20. Overall, the prices were very competitive. They also told me that they do wine tastings on the weekends and taste out in glass!! That kicks ass! I must also say that the staff was kind and genuine and really knew a lot about their products, but without any pretention. Overall, I loved the store's groovy vibe and good selection and will be back in the near future to raid their wine selection. read more

They have an excellent selection of wines at all price points but they also have great craft beer options in their fridge for those who prefer a nice six pack. I've been going to this place since the first day I moved into the area (August2010) and I'm very proud to call Galleria Liqueurs my local/neighborhood/preferred liquor store. This establishment, which its interior is amazing looking, is always full of incredible beers and beautiful wines--not to mention an extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff. GL, which is what I call the place, also has an array of deli products for wine pairing, popular and childhood snacks (e.g. Funyuns and Charleston Chew, respectively) The last awesome element, which I will mention in this review, that GL has to offer is its weekly wine tasting events... I'm so disappointed! I've been coming to this store for about 6 years... I walked in today to purchase a bottle of Tequila and a chaser! The man behind the counter suggested a tomato based "juice" Its more of a dipping sauce! I come back to purchase a different chaser... then he tells me, sorry at least buy some gum too! We don't process card transactions for less then 6.00! Really?? You call this customer service to loyal customers who've been coming to your store for years!?! I just left the store with a tomato sauce that you the "expert" suggested I buy! And now you won't allow me to purchase a liquid chaser?
