5th hole

Nice golf course. The greens are a little fast. There tends to be a traffic jam on the 3 and 4 holes, of course, itself can be challenging for beginners. However, the prices for tee times are great.

Great golf course. Well maintained and I payed $22 bucks walking the 9 holes. Absolutely worth the money....the value for money is very high. They have a discount for residents but to get that you have to go to their 18hole course across the street and have your drivers license with a Long Beach(LB) address and two utility bills with a LB address....and pay $27 for the resident rebate. I understand they have to be careful but I had the LB address on my drivers license and I would think that showing that at check in would be enough but no. For rec 9 the resident rebate saves $7 per 9 holes so the 5th time you play you would save money on it. Anyways.....nice personnel they don't make the rules and great course for sure. Will come back many times!!

They have some great specials. I had the grilled ham and cheese on wheat and it was sooo delicious. It comes with fries for only $7. They also have modelo on tap. My friend split the burger with bacon jam and thought it was also delicious. I'm not sure if the restaurant is showing on Yelp independently from the golf course so I'll post here for now. Thanks Matt, the chef, for a lovely lunch. The cafe has indoor and outdoor seating.

2 stars for this course only because the squirrels are adorable and friendly, but I'll never be back. We had a reservation and were harassed by a group behind us the entire time (a walk on who was squeezed in). They kept yelling at us to hurry up when we were literally waiting for the group in front of us to get off the tee, the green, etc. We have all played those types of days where nobody is going anywhere. And they complained to the Marshall who sided with them. We were advised to hit our drives into the foursome in the fairway ahead of us - like how in the hell is that respectful for a golf course? The Marshall was empathetic but kept trying to hurry us up when there were 5 groups stacked ahead of us too. Maybe, just maybe, you guys shouldn't book so many tee times close together? How is that our fault? We felt rushed and stressed the entire time and the Marshall chose our group to follow and keep reminding us to hurry. For the price, go elsewhere. If you want to see the friendly squirrels, stick to the practice green but I wouldn't give the course your money.

Bacon jam cheese burger with jalapeno.

Great specials at the cafe. BLT with avocado on sourdoah toast. Delicious Bacon jam cheeseburger with tots. Grilled chicken pesto sanwitch. Pattymelt on rye Tuna avocado tower And delicious breakfast burrito

A really intimidating par 4 since I have never played one, only par 3's until today. Beautiful greens, well manicured valleys and mounds with trees in the middle. After the 5th hole, the 6th is across the street so try to look at the map of the course beforehand or make the mistake like me of asking the pro shop (where the 5th hole leads to). Super cool pro shop staff. They really work with you, late, lost, whatever it is. They are very understanding. Gorgeous place. I highly recommend this place.

My neighbor invited me to play here on a beautiful early Monday morning. Green fee was quite reasonable. The course was well-maintained. It looked especially peaceful and enchanting in the dawn's morning light. Hitting right at the blinding bright rising sun made teeing off at the first hole a bit challenging. Overall, it wasn't too strenuous pulling a cart on this short course. All the holes were quite straight forward; no water hazards. The fairways were wide and forgiving. Bathrooms were clean. It was a very pleasant nine hole experience.

I like the price for sure...we pay $11.50 on weekdays for the twilight non-resident rate. I do not like the snack bar prices...it cost me $7 to get a 16 oz. soda and a small bag of orange ring soft candy. It is a 9 hole course with 4 par 4's and 5 par 3's. The first two holes are short par 4's that are under 300 yards that run along busy 7th St. There are two par 4's over 300 yards (holes 5 & 7). The last 4 holes are located across a small side street that you must cross. The par 3's are generally of decent length except for Hole #3 which is short with an elevated tee box that makes for a cool shot. Overall the course is in pretty good shape and the staff has been friendly. This place can play slow at times where 9 holes might take 2+ hours. They have an online feature to get a reservation but I think quite a few locals who are regulars show up and they squeeze them in and it can get backed up very fast by hole #2. I find this to be a great course for someone who is new to golfing but yet not so easy for the more advanced golfers to be bored.

Hole 7 tee box

Honestly an amazing 9 hole course for price. Staff are great, cafe and their cook are even better! (Wish it was open past 2:30) I love playing here just wish they could clean up some of the fairways and greens and it'd be a perfect course imo

I walked into a space that is smaller than some larger Japanese gardens, but the layout feels carefully planned with winding paths, traditional landscaping, a koi pond, waterfalls, bridges, and quiet corners throughout. It is the type of place where taking your time matters more than trying to see everything quickly, and the smaller size actually makes the experience feel more intimate. The garden feels like a world apart from the campus surrounding it, and the transition from the university grounds to the garden is immediate and effective. The koi pond is easily the centerpiece of the garden and one of the most enjoyable parts to spend time around. I found myself lingering by the water, watching the fish move through the pond as the sunlight filtered through the trees. The fish are large and active, and the surrounding greenery, stone features, and water elements create a very relaxing atmosphere. The garden does a good job balancing natural scenery with traditional Japanese design, with each section offering a slightly different view and feeling as I walked through. The bridges and stone lanterns add to the sense of place, and the sound of the waterfalls creates a calming background that stays with you as you move through the space. What I liked most about this garden is how calm it feels despite being located on a college campus. It feels separated from the surrounding area once you enter, making it a nice place for a quiet walk, photography, or just taking a break. The landscaping is well maintained, and the entire space has a slower pace that encourages you to actually stop and appreciate the details rather than rushing through. The garden's design rewards a slow approach, with each turn in the path offering a slightly different perspective on the pond, the plants, and the stonework. The visit is fairly quick since the garden is compact, but it works well as a relaxing stop rather than a destination that takes up an entire afternoon. Reservations are required, so it is worth checking availability before going. Admission is free, although parking is an extra cost and can be the main inconvenience, especially during busy campus hours. The garden's location on campus makes it accessible, but the parking situation can require a bit of patience. Earl Burns Miller Japanese Garden is a beautiful spot if you are looking for a peaceful escape rather than a large attraction. The koi pond, thoughtful design, and quiet atmosphere make it a place worth visiting, especially on a nice day when you can take your time walking through the garden. It offers a brief but meaningful pause from the surrounding city and campus life, and the care that has gone into maintaining the space is evident in every corner.

My wife and I discovered The Modern during a special event right before I proposed, and we knew that if we ever got married, this would be the place. Following our engagement, we had a tour of the place with Mary, and we were 1000% convinced with the place since Mary came with the package lol. The communication throughout the course of our planning was outstanding, and both Abel and Mary addressed all our inquiries and concerns without hesitation and with clear answers. While the conditions of the contract initially seemed rigid, all guidelines and expectations were stated clearly, and both Abel and Mary provided all the support necessary to ensure the vendors understood and executed per the contract accordingly. All terms of the pricing were transparent, and we found the costs to be worth every penny, as we were 1000% satisfied with the venue. Through the course of our two-year planning, Abel and Mary were available and offered the walkthroughs necessary for the vendors and us to plan accordingly and execute an impeccably perfect wedding. Mary did an outstanding job and exerted so much patience with both my Wife and I through the course of food and drink tasting. She assessed our preferences and perfected our specialty cocktails and food menu to reflect my wife, our guests, and I. We appreciated the opportunity to host our rehearsal brunch at their Kitchen and Bar located below the venue. Our guests enjoyed getting a small taste of the delicious food and drinks they'd be having the following day at the actual wedding. The day of the wedding could not have unfolded so perfectly, both aesthetically and logistically. Abel and Mary coordinated and collaborated in unison with our group of vendors, and they really outdid themselves by providing the foundation to our dream wedding, literally. They did an amazing and efficient job at flipping the venue space for the reception. All while our guests were enjoying themselves in the lavish lounge during cocktail hour. The venue itself is perfect. It is very modern, clean, spacious, classy, and their furniture and greenery were the perfect accessories necessary to complete our wedding day. And that's not all. The VIEWS are one of a kind as the venue has an entire wall space made up of windows that overlooks Long Beach Airport and an outdoor terrace that allowed us and our guests to enjoy the views. We literally had airplanes flying up and down during our entire wedding, with a grand exit of us flying off in a helicopter. My wife, our guests, and I cannot believe how perfect the entire day turned out. They will not stop raving about how perfect and beautiful everything turned out. From the food to the drinks and the wonderful bartenders, and of course to how magically, beautiful our wedding was. None of which would have been possible without the fantastic venue, Abel, Mary and their team. While we are saddened to turn the chapter from the wedding planning and wedding, we are so so so happy we chose The Modern. The Modern and team will forever be embedded in our hearts and beautiful memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you, Mary, Abel, team, and The Modern!
