This has been my home course here in Long Beach for 15 years, but I have been playing it long before that. Rec Park is always in solid condition, and it's been in exceptionally amazing shape over the past couple months. The greens are consistently really good, and they'd really improved fairway conditions over the past 4 months. The pace of play is always good. As with any public course, the pace is gonna slow as you get further into the afternoon. But it's never really overtly show. And in the morning it's perfect. I highly recommend BIG REC! read more

I've been going to Big Rec 18 hole golf course for years and it's never been this well maintained and run. Tee times are on time, organized, the course is in solid condition and the greens are rolling perfectly! I Highly recommend this course over the other 3 for value and pace of play. To top it off the kitchen is good too! Best chocolate chip cookies!! Lastly Eli who I met over there when I had a small timing issue was super professional and assisted my group out! Weekly rates $41.00 for residence. $71.00 for me because I drive from Valencia in the morning traffic to play. I'll never do that again. What a bullshit policy. Why would you not want to lower the rates and get more people to play? Business must be great...... $30.00 more? Just a rip off. If I could pay 41.00 or 51.00......61.00 maybe?? I would be there twice a month with my friends. $30 more. What a joke. As far as the course goes, it was in good shape. It's a fair challenge. The carts are old and beat up. My favorite Long Beach course! Conditions are consistently great and playable. The layout is interesting and challenging. The greens are the best of all the LB courses. Only El Dorado compares, and then only when it is prepared for the Long Beach Open. The service there is also exceptional. I should shout out Sandra and Mike in the restaurant, Isabella in the front and Eli the Pro Shop manager. Everyone is great, I just don't know all of their names! My friends had their wedding at Recreation Park Golf Course 18. We were worried about the morning showers but it eventually cleared up as the ceremony was starting around 5 pm. It was still raining at 4:30 and the seats were still wet when we sat down. I guess they did not plan for rain? I saw that the tables were left bare until we mentioned that the gift table may get wet and they started to bring out umbrellas. Luckily, the skies cleared as the wedding party made it down the aisle. During the cocktail hour, despite the Sterno food warmers, the food was a bit cold, which was a bit disappointing. The hosted bar helped though. The reception was held in the ballroom which was nicely decorated for the happy couple. The food was set up as a buffet and the food was a mix of Indian and Vietnamese dishes. Some dishes were a win and others not so much. They also set up a photo booth area outside along with dessert tables. For the most part, everything went off without a hitch. There was a lot of available parking as this is technically a golf course that was rented out after hours. We had a lovely time mingling with the other guests. Have been playing here for at least last nine or ten years on and off but the last few times our foursome has went to pay in the Pro shop at least two of us have been given a hard time over something, never had a problem before a couple of months ago definitely will check every other course instead of putting up with rude kids for that price. read more

Big Rec is classic municipal course. The course is in good shape, presents a solid challenge, and pace of play is no longer an issue. We finished our round in a little over four hours. The range is kinda small but that's okay; practice greens are good. I think Rec is awesome. Just a classic public golf course. read more

I played this course many times but the last time the course was in horrible shape for this iconic great track, but I played it yesterday Aug 20th and it was greatly improved but one comment why do they allow the large tire trackers and or mowers make deep gouges near the greens! STOP destroying the course! But with all that said the overall course was vastly improved with the greens in great shape and the flow of play was terrific! Big Rec in LBC, is an old school golf course located on 7th St, a little West of CSULB. The nickname is bc it is a full 18 hole course, vs Little Rec that is a 9 hole course. Another interesting fact is that it was the original Virginia Country Club. The current VCC is in the Bixby Knolls area of LBC, where a lot of oil money in the area originated. Big Rec is a challenge at 6,400 yards from the back tees, elevation changes, fairways that bend left or right, and lots of trees. I found myself hitting longer clubs vs I am used to, in order to get to the green. Another positive is the low $46 price tag w/ cart for a non-city resident. The only negative of the course IMHO is the layout of the holes. Holes #6, #7 & #8 are a brutal stretch of long par 4 holes at 460, 428 & 412 yds, respectively. Most par 4s I play are in the high 300 yd range. Secondarily, the par 3s (holes that you expect to be on the green in one shot, and then make two putts = par 3), are all a similar short distance. Most courses have varying distances on par 3s so you have to hit different clubs to challenge the golfer. Nonetheless, I like Big Rec for the same reasons I like El Dorado (another LBC city course). Both courses are old school, reasonably priced, and have nice staff. I'd come back any time. read more

Rec Park 18 is a frequent stop due to convenience. The course is usually in good shape, with a straightforward front 9 and a more challenging back 9 that keeps things interesting. The driving range is the weak spot -- limited and with poor-quality balls -- so I wouldn't come here just to practice. Only a week ago this course was in terrible condition. I am so glad to report things have improved dramatically! While still having some standing water, the size and number of places has diminished. The greens are almost back to being the high quality we are used to playing. I am so glad this grand old lady is close to being herself. read more

Since the golf boom course conditions have improved greatly. Range is still top ten worst in southern CA. Restaurant closes crazy early like 3:00 or 3:30 which is a shame. Food and drinks good seems like they are keeping open for one shift. Bar cart on the course does a good job. read more

Went to a wedding here, the venue, staff, and food were fantastic. Doesn't feel like you are in Long Beach, secluded and very green.

The course is in great shape. And I have to admit that at the beginning of the morning at hole one, there was a gentleman by the name of Dave. He he was such a great help and assisted us with getting started with our golf day.. AMAZING!!. Now by hple 9 we encountered a golf ranger by the name of John who ketp hounding us and following our every shot. John kept reiterating that we needed to hurry up. The crazy thing was that no one was really behind us, and we only stopped at the club house to go to the restroom and get a beverage. It took a while as no one was attentively at the bar to take our orders. By the time we got out of the club house, it took roughly 15 to 20 minutes. On the back nine, this is where John came, who was the ranger keeped hounding us to hurry up to golf faster. Now, in an industry where you provide a service, there are better ways to approach and speak to people. John did not do that as he again hounded us and hovered us, making our experiences at the golf course uncomfortable and affected our game. As soon as John came over for the unteeth time, I finally brought up that he was hounding us to go to the restriom and get a beverag. At that point, he was nonexistent. When we finally finished our golfing and made our way back to thw clubhouse. We asked to speak to a manager, which was nonexistent. We were told that there won't be a manager until the next business day, and we asked to get their card. This is just my opinion that a manager not available to handle a customer service issue right away is a big problem as far as running a business. Hopefully, they can retrain their employees and make the golfing experience at that location more appealing. John (ranger) needs retraining!! Horrinble member service!!! read more

Can't believe I have to do this but here we go! On November 1, my birthday. I booked a tee time for 3 golfers on GolfNow and the evening prior my 3rd tested positive for Covid. As soon as I arrived at the course I advised them of the situation and was told this was not a problem and charged me for the myself and my friend including a cart. I also bought about $200 in food and drinks for our group, which included 2 players the course had put with us to make a foursome. Great people I might add! So fast forward to yesterday and I see a charge for the tee time for my friend with Covid for a no-show! I just don't see how this is a good business practice especially when it was just fine when checking in and the fact my friend had Covid! Thanks for the late birthday gift Rec 18! read more

Had an 11:00 tee time. Checked in at 10:30 and were told to go straight to the start because they were "early." Even so, we didn't tee off until right at our tee time. No time to warm up. We get paired with another 2-some and the front 9 goes okay. We have to wait to tee off on a few holes, but no big deal. Then comes the back 9. Take a pit stop at the clubhouse to use the restroom and get a drink, but it takes 15-20 minutes to get a drink because of their staffing. We met up with our original group and they told us that one group played through. Okay, fine, no worries. Then we get a complaint about place of play from the group behind us, yet they never catch up to us on tees. Then, comes the Marshal. John. Oh John. We tell him we're trying. We're not Scottie Scheffler or Rory McIlroy, but we aren't deliberately playing slow. We're going straight to our balls and hitting. We explained to John about our pit stop but then he tells the other 2-some with us to play through if they want. They were NOT faster than us and weren't waiting on us. When we say to John, "So we're not allowed to take a bathroom break?", he decided to say he's going to report us and then heads off to the club. We didn't see him again. We finished in 4.5 hours, total. Not terrible. We get to the clubhouse and ask for a manager, who conveniently was gone for the day, but the desk guy knew who we were. Nobody ever caught up to us on the tees. Once, the group hit into us as we looked for a ball, but we went straight back into play. We offered to John to let the group behind us play through, but John wasn't receptive to that. We were just trying to have a nice day out. We weren't the best golfers, but we're okay and we're learning. This was a bad experience that was unreasonable. I will say the starter in the morning was great. He was super helpful and easy going, but John was awful. I also was charged public rates despite having player's club membership. I've played much slower rounds and have had courses with a lot more backup and have never had this level of treatment by a marshal. John wasn't even willing to chat with us about options before he disappeared and reported us. This was my first time playing this course and it may be my last. I hope maybe John was just having a bad day, but regardless of that, he was unreasonable. read more

Never again at this course. Man, what a disaster. I tried to pay last Sunday morning for my round, maybe 15 min before my tee time. The guy in front of me tried doing the same, they ran his card 3 times and each time it said "declined". He told the employee that it was showing he was being charged each time, even though their system had indicated otherwise. They then ran my card to see if it was something on their end, sure enough, it said "declined". By this time there were about 10 people behind me standing around waiting to pay for their rounds as well. the guys working told us that we needed to put our names and phone numbers down on a piece of paper and return after our round to pay since their credit card machines were not working. I then returned and paid after my round and about an hour later i saw that i had been charged twice for my round, lol, of course. i brought this to the gentleman working and he said "don't worry about it, the morning charge will come off in a day or two, otherwise we'll be happy to reimburse you the $85 if it doesn't." well, the charge did not come off and i was charged twice for my round because the issue they had had with their credit card machines in the morning. I then called an Angel Luna two days later, he found my charges and tried to reimb me but he said my mastercard would need to be brought back in since there is a chip on it, (this place is like a moose lodge for the elderly). i told angel i wasn't going to drive from buena park to long beach so that i could be reimbursed for a double charge that was their fault, not mine. He then suggested i ask my friends for their credit card numbers so that i can email this to him and he can try to credit on of their cards instead of mine, otherwise i can talk to the general manager, Art McGrath, or i can just return in person to get reimb. i then called this general manager and emailed him (all of this because of their F-up), and this general manager tries to tell me that he couldn't find the charge for our fourth (the group i golfed with) so GOLFNOW prob charged me the "no show" fee of $85, he tried to tell me that his golf course didn't charge me the $85 twice (double charge), that it was GOLF NOW. lol, I don't use GOLF NOW since they're a rip off, so now i had to pull the confirmation email from BIG REC showing that i booked my tee time through their website, not GOLF NOW. My statement shows that it was BIG REC that charged me twice, alllll of this to try and recover the double charge of $85. What kind of an establishment is this?!?! Again, all because of their screw up, I'm having to do all of this. read more

I like this course, and live in Long Beach, but won't play it again. 2 hours, 40 minutes to get through 7 holes. The par 3 #5 had 12 people at it. As much as I like to play, that's a ~6 hour round. Gave up, headed for the parking lot. This course always plays slow but it's worse now. They need to gap the starts better and employ a ranger. Told the front desk, guy shrugged his shoulders and said "we're busy". Must be trying to make up revenue from the rain outs, but making the course unplayable isn't the way to do it. read more

Great program for locals and seniors. Unfortunately the older weekend personnel are pretty unfriendly at the front desk. Sadly there isn't any email or notice of any type to players club members regarding shuttering the driving range for a month. So showing up with a bad surprise isn't very user friendly. The course is fun but... The greens on the front nine suck major donkey nads!!! Damn near every one of the greens is like putting through a cross between a "dried out mini mud run" course and ant sized sand dunes. Can't read the boogers no matter how hard you try. And your ball will bounce all over them. Want a clear path to the cup? Forget about it... It's not happenin' here... While I have played all 18 holes here a few times, the vast majority of my familiarity lies with the front 9 and the toughest holes for me always seems to be either the par four 3rd hole or par three 5th hole. They just eat my shorts. The par three is especially tough on me when it's uphill... Anywho... The back nine is a lot more fun and in way, way better condition. Just wish I had the opportunity to play them more often. Relatively inexpensive course to boot. Smallish bar area but the waitress in there, (Sandra), is awesome!!! She'll hook you up with all the ice you need to keep your libations cold on those hot summer days... read more

My family and I held a celebration of life gathering for my late grandfather here at Recreation Park Golf Course this past weekend and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. Organizing an event of this kind is never easy, but I'm incredibly thankful to the two private event coordinators, Juliann and Tawnya, for making everything almost effortless. Over a month's time, there was always prompt and professional correspondence through phone and email. Juliann helped me every step of the way with booking the event space, choosing buffet packages, and all the little details (linen colors, how many guests to a table, room layout, final guest counts, contracts, etc.). Tawyna helped my family tour the space and was there on the day of the gathering to assist in any way possible. We had about 100 people in attendance and the space was beautiful. So many of our guests came up to me throughout the event to say that they loved how the space looked. The banquet staff were wonderful. They made sure everything was set up to perfection and refilled the buffet and drink station so we were never out of anything. We opted for the Italian buffet option (mixed greens salad with two dressings, penne pasta, alfredo or marinara sauce, garlic bread, and Italian sausage or meatballs) and the food was a hit. The meatballs were so good, everyone raved about them. I highly recommend this space for events of any kind. Juliann and Tawnya are an excellent team, with great support from the banquet staff. They helped make a difficult day for my family so much easier and we are all so appreciative of their hard work and attention to detail. Is it ever good when you have a tee time of 1045am and you tee off at 1120am? NO! Is it good that your round is almost 7 hours? NO! Ok ok....I don't usually like weekend golf, but when you have a bunch of friends that have weekends off, you'll book a tee time on a Saturday or Sunday too. Rec Park 18 is cool in that they allow 5-somes to play. The course isn't all that hard, no water, open fairways, greens that are actually pretty fast for a public course. This course has minimal Asian groups (that I noticed that day), but then again, there were a lot of "hackers" out today. When you build a 18-hole golf course with minimal bathroom stops, you're in trouble too. Put up some port-o-potties or something if needed. The food stand was closed, but they had a guy BBQ'ing at the 10th whole. I am hoping that an on-site manager sees this review and make changes to the fence guards or doesn't allow players to hit the balls towards PCH, because this evening around 6:15 P.M. a golf ball struck the hood of my vehicle as I was driving south/ west bound on PCH. luckily I was able to brake enough for it to hit my hood instead of my windshield, which would have resulted in a larger damage. I am truly upset that I now have a dent on the hood of my car that I've had for a little over a year! FIX YOUR FENCE GUARD SO THIS WON'T HAPPEN TO ANYONE ELSE! luckily traffic wasn't as bad as it normally is on this street, which could have even resulted in a multiple involved car accident! read more
